Epidemiologist and writer Abby Cartus returns to continue our discussion about the so-called successes and failures of public health, particularly as it relates to the ongoing pandemic. In this interview, I asked Abby to clarify the kinds of data that are collected—mainly from wastewater sites—and how that data is modeled and presented at this phase of the pandemic. How does this impose limitations on our view of the current rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the US population? After establishing what can be understood, and not understood, from wastewater data, I asked Abby to raise her critique of how this data is being modeled and presented by the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative, a popular and well regarded resource often cited by covid cautious and public health advocacy individuals and groups, and what this indicates about not only where we are at this phase of the pandemic, but how data and statistics are underlaid by ideological assumptions that deserve examination. // Episode notes: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/abby-cartus // Sustain + support: https://www.patreon.com/lastborninthewilderness // Donate: https://www.paypal.me/lastbornpodcast
An elderly practitioner in China cares for both her husband, and their care giver, when they contracted the COVID virus. Remaining in close contact with them during their illness, she was never infected; and despite being 80 years old, she is in perfect health after more than 26 years of practicing Dafa. Value investing is all about buying stocks that are trading below their intrinsic value. In practical terms, that often involves investing in companies and sectors that have been shunned by the market due to particular macro headwinds. "It should be no surprise as to where the pockets of opportunity are," says Tim Carleton, Auscap Asset Management CIO and today's guest on the Rules of Investing. "They're in the more cyclical sectors that people are most concerned about from an earnings perspective." In today's interview with Livewire's David Thornton, Tim runs through two retail stocks in the Auscap Long Short Australian Equities Fund that fit this profile. I won't give them away, but one is the only stock on the ASX with a return on equity above 50%, while the other is a long-term compounder poised to take market share. He also discusses why he's avoided the tech and energy sectors, what he expects from earnings season, why he doesn't put much weight in earnings beats and misses, and why lithium is a crowded trade (yet remains invested in it). Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Covid 8/18/22: CDC Admits Mistakes, published by Zvi on August 18, 2022 on LessWrong. Two Covid-related things happened this week that I did not expect. The CDC admitted that it had failed us during the pandemic, withdrew at long last many of its remaining recommendations and promised reforms to be less academic and otherwise do better. A new paper found potential biological markers for Long Covid, claiming it can be identified via tests that match patient self-reports almost all the time. This points towards potential progress in treatment, and more generally in Long Covid being much more concretely A Thing that might exist and could be reasoned about. There are still flaws, and even without flaws there is still much work to do here. Most of the reasons not to be concerned remain, so up front: I do not think that this should substantially change anyone's level of Covid precautions. Executive Summary CDC finally fully gives up on six foot social distancing and other measures. CDC admits some failure, promises reforms that seem potentially promising. New study finds potential biological markers for Long Covid. Also I think someone said something about over the counter hearing aids? Let's run the numbers. The Numbers Predictions Prediction from last week: 650k cases (-5%) and 3,200 deaths (+0%). Results: 602k cases (-12%) and 3,183 deaths (-1%). Prediction for next week: 560k cases (-8%) and 3,200 deaths (+1%). I do not know why cases declined more than expected but result seems robust so I see no reason to expect it not to continue at least somewhat. There won't be enough time for the decline to impact deaths yet, so I'm mostly going with the null prediction there. There is not much meaningful uncertainty here. Deaths Cases Decline cuts across all four regions. We are fully into the BA.5 era with nothing on the near-term horizon to replace it, so things should be quiet for a few months at least. Physical World Modeling A guide to buying the right HEPA air filter. Bob Wachter sees no sign of anything that might replace BA.5. Thread also reminds us that it is a common mistake not to take into account the correlation between the Covid status of people who choose to be together in a group. Trevor Bedford however sees logistic growth in BA.2.75, although only with R0 ~ 1.3 (versus ~1 for BA.5) which isn't that much of an advantage for a new strain taking over. My guess is Trevor is right and BA.2.75 will displace BA.5 over time, but that we will barely even notice. Some sad news. I opened a Manifold market on whether she'll experience a rebound, to see how common people think such events are. This also brings up the question, what happens when you're against actual physical world modeling and instead blindly follow CDC rules? They do know he had Covid-19 plus a rebound within the last few weeks? That it is absurd to think that being a ‘close contact' puts him at relatively high risk for Covid-19 given that timeline? No. Of course not. This is not a man to concern himself with whether or not an action makes physical sense. Almost no children under 5 are getting vaccinated, even weaker ‘than experts feared.' Doses are being discarded due to lack of demand. This should not be a fear so much as a revealed preference. If we had approved these doses sooner, I am guessing we would have had much higher uptake, although still nothing that would have satisfied experts. At this point, people don't care enough, especially given the logistics are frequently annoying. This raises the question of why we insisted in so many crazy precautions for these same young children for so long, in ways that I strongly believe did serious damage to their development and well-being. Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) of Prescott is using a monoclonal antibody that has proven effective against the COVID-19 Omincron variant. In November 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization to allow the use of monoclonal antibodies (MAB) for the treatment of mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19. Two COVID monoclonal antibody products - Regeneron and BAM/Ete - are not effective against the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus. Dignity Health, Yavapai Regional Medical Center is no longer administering Regeneron and BAM/Ete treatments based on current recommendations due to the high proportion of Omicron... As the Omicron variant causes record levels of infection in the United States, the end of the pandemic seems as far away as ever. But far from preparing a robust response to defeat the virus, the Biden administration is preparing to surrender and encourage the public to “learn to live with” COVID indefinitely. When the Party for Socialism and Liberation pointed out the fact that China has in fact succeeded at virtually eliminating deaths from the virus, we were attacked by far-right pundits like Ben Shapiro – who took the position that such a feat is essentially impossible and asserted that China's achievement was just a massive falsification. MSM and CNN FEAR MONGERING CONTINUES TWO COVID-19 MUTATIONS HAVE “MERGED”
THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Covid-19 popped up out of nowhere in January 2020 and we began following the news reports about this mysterious virus coming out of China. We all remembered the SARS era and how Japan had sailed through that pretty well. We weren't particularly worried and expected Japan would sail through this one too. However, around the middle of February our clients starting postponing scheduled in-house training. This is when we realised Covid-19 was a serious issue. We had public classes scheduled too and at our own volition, worrying about people's safety, we decided to postpone them. We also said to our team to work from home. If they had to come to the office, they could do so, but try to come in late to avoid rush hour trains and go home early for the same reason. On March 3rd we had a socially distanced, mask wearing Town Hall. This was the last mass gathering of the clan to date. We were able to piggyback on our American colleagues ten years of experience delivering LIVE On Line training and we pivoted across to remote delivery of our content. For the first time in my career, I was leading a remote team, with a single person in each location, some working from a desk, others from their kitchen table, couch or the kotatsu, the low table typical of many Japanese homes where you sit on the floor. I went out and bought a whole swag of headsets for everyone. Actually, when I got down to the electronics store, I realised I wasn't the only one thinking like this, because the shelves were pretty much stripped bare. I kicked myself for not being sharper and speedier about the new necessities. Fortunately, we all had laptops, so we could work from anywhere. We had previously considered moving our server to the cloud and it was then that I regretted we hadn't taken that step at that time. I wanted to keep the team together, so we transferred our morning chorei or morning meeting online. We call it the “Daily Dale”. I made it the rule you have to dress for work, regardless of whether you are working from home or not. You also have to come on camera. I required this so we could keep an eye on everyone, in case some people are becoming isolated and depressed, being stuck at home all the time and are starting to withdraw. In our normal routine, by turn, we each lead everyone through the “Daily Dale” covering the company Vision, Mission, Values etc. We do this every day to re-energise our WHY. We kept this going so that every day just about everyone could reconnect with each other. After a while, I realised we needed to reproduce the chit chat opportunities that you get when working together in an office. We started “Coffee Time With Dale” at 3.00pm every day, for those who wanted to catch up informally with their colleagues. I had four new staff start in January, just in time for the business to plummet and the team to disperse. They had very little time in the office with their colleagues, especially in those all important early days of starting with a new company. They needed lots of help on how to do things and where things were located. I found that leading a dispersed team was much more time consuming than normal. I was the center of the wheel and I had spoke connections to my reports, but what was missing were the cross spokes connecting them together. I found I had to spend time telling the others about aspects of a conversation and decisions I had reached with their team mates. Of course, they wouldn't answer their phones, so I needed to call multiple times and leave messages. I also found that the millennials in my team were not good with the phone. They don't check their messages. The whole chain of command was bogging down. Somehow, we have kept it all together so far. My concern is this situation is likely to last until the end of the year and beyond with everyone working from home. I had scheduled another full safety Town Hall for January 2021, just to get people together for some face time, after such a long time apart. The Government then announced the lockdown, asking people to stay at home, so we cancelled the meeting. Isolation fatigue is a real thing in Japanese society, which tends to operate extremely well in group formats. The hairy chested Aussie individualistic culture I grew up in, may handle isolation and not seeing work mates much better than Japan does, because of the latter's group orientation. Many of my team are singles, cut off from family, friends and work colleagues. I keep telling everyone to schedule days off, take some of your leave. You can't go anywhere, but at least you can sleep in, watch a movie, read a novel, anything which provides a break from the grinding routine of chasing revenues in a business depression. Do they do it? No. Being at home doesn't feel like a holiday. It is boring when that is all that is open to you. They are all strenuously hoarding leave days waiting for the Big Breakout Release, when we can all travel again. Fine up to a point, I get it, but I am still worried about my team's mental health, so I keep pushing this “take time off” idea anyway. How long can this remote leadership go on? I know what happened over the last year, but what is going to happen this year? How do I keep people enthusiastic, as the situation grinds us all down? Do I need to ramp up my communication and reach down more often to those on the front line? Do I need to schedule more regular Town Halls, get people together in a large socially distanced room for comradery and provide actual face time, as opposed to only screen face time? Do I need to mandate days to be taken off, so people can sleep in or read their novel, or watch some movies? Where are the cracks that are going to appear in this second year of our collective nightmare? How do I keep people virus free by encouraging them to avoid contact with random people, because they may be carriers of the virus? Do I need to increase my positivity much further to drive positivity in the team? What am I missing, because my own world has become so diminished and small now? One thing is certain – this isn't going away for a long, long time regardless of what various carefully coiffed Cabinet Ministers may say. Do we have what it takes to get to the other side and have an intact business with a healthy, happy team? These are the big questions facing us all, as we lurch into Year Two of the pandemic.
