Nearest Airport: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Intl Airport - GAUNearest Railway Station: Naharlagun Railway Stn (NHLN)Prerequisites - Inner line permit is required (https://itanagar.nic.in/service/inner-line-permitilp/)Packing - Sleeping bags, odomos, hat, rain gear, gum boots, trekking gear, backpack, raincoat, down jacket, trekking pole (optional), waterproof clothingTime of the year - Monsoons are the best timeLength of the itinerary: 8 daysItinerary Highlights: Upasana talks about the seven lakes trek in the Dibang valley in Arunachal Pradesh, one of the most pristine and beautiful treks in the country.The trek lasts for at least 8 days and covers 7 alpine lakes, the highest one being located at a height of over 14,000 ft. done with Emudu trekkers.Upasana does the trek in October, one of the nicer months to do this trek, however monsoons might be a great option to consider given the offbeat nature of this expedition.The nearest village is Anini, where the group gathers and heads to the trailhead at Emuli village. Day 1 involves trekking through a grassland and camping at the base of the forests for about 4-5 hours. It is best to have a hat, a walking stick and odomos as there are dam dims or insects in the grasslands that could cause itchy bites. The first base camp is Aniku where the group spends the first night at. The next day, the team starts walking through the grasslands. It involves 4-6 hours of trekking, and is filled with the cacophony of insects and birds making loud sounds. The second campsite is called Emudu camp site and has a beautiful logwood cabin in the middle of the rainforest. The third day included trekking through the rain forest and ascending uphill to scale rocky mountains. It is one of the longest days of trekking along with some technical climbs accompanied by winds and rain. The first lake - Kahmu-yu lake is accessed from this basecamp. The next campsite is after a fairly easy trek through the rolling hills, the 2nd lake Emuh-ya lake is next to the campsite. There are also wonderful views including waterfalls, streams and fog covered peaks that one can see from this campsite which is base for the next 3 days and serves as the basecamp to trek to the remaining 5 lakes. The team fills up on tin fish, dal, rice, pickle, rotis, leafy vegetables and maggie for meals with the aim of ensuring enough nutrition for the treks. Sitting by the campfire and gazing at the night sky was another of the moments to remember. The next day includes a trek to lake 3 (Koyombo lake) and lake 4 (Dinu lake). Dinu lake is the most gorgeous of all the lakes, situated at 14,000 ft, deep blue colored and sandwiched between two mountains. After return to the camp and refreshing to have a go again the next day to the final three lakes, lake 5 (Che-ne lake), and lake 6 and 7 - Huhu I and Huhu II. This culminates in a very beautiful sight, Huhu I which is located at a higher altitude, flowing down to Huhu II, engulfed by mist all around. The return journey retraces the initial trek, making stops at campsite 2 before heading back to Anini. A high-profile Indian Administrative Service couple – Sanjiv Khirwar and Rinku Dugga – were shunted out of Delhi to Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh a few days ago. Their transfers came soon after ‘The Indian Express' newspaper published a photo showing the couple walking their dog in New Delhi's Thyagaraj stadium at a time when athletes should have been using the sports facility's tracks. The transfer orders likely flowed from an official desire to punish the couple for doing wrong. They also stirred up a hornets' nest by pointing to both Ladakh and Arunachal as dumping grounds for erring officials. In March this year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his counterpart from Meghalaya Conrad Sangma signed an agreement in New Delhi to partially resolve the 50-year-old border dispute between the two states. Reports indicate that matters have been resolved in six out of the 12 border locations that had disputes. At the same time, Home Minister Amit Shah has said that 70% of the border disputes between the two states have been resolved by this agreement. Subsequently, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam decided to form district-level committees for settling their boundary disputes. There are now hopes that, following the ‘50-50' model that Assam and Meghalaya followed, the disputes between Assam and Arunachal will also see resolution. Assam has border disputes with most of its neigbouring states. But in this edition of InFocus, we take a closer look at the causes of its disputes with Meghalaya and Arunachal, and whether the Assam-Meghalaya agreement can serve as a template for resolving all the other border disputes in the North-East. Time of the year - October - March Length of the itinerary: 2 days Itinerary Highlights: Akansha takes us on a trek to the mystical Glaw lake in Arunachal Pradesh. Glaw lake is situated in the Wakro town of eastern Arunachal Pradesh, in the Lohit district - a sparsely populated region, still pristine with flora and fauna. The lake is situated in the middle of Kamlang Tiger reserve, close to the Burmese and Tibetan border. The reserve is filled with thick forests full of exotic plants and animals - plantains, dry fruits like Chahal, oranges, elephant apple, butterflies, gibbons, the Great Indian hornbill, Himalayan monals among others. Akanksha's guide was a local student from Arunachal - Bethem, who helped navigate through this 7-8 hour trek (one way). Important pit stops include the forest hut, the suspension bridge over the Lohit River, trekker's hut in Kalai among others. Legend goes that Glaw lake welcomes anyone visiting the lake for the first time and is welcomed by showers, which was true in Akanksha's case as well. Another legend goes that no one ever drowns at the Glaw (also no one swims at the Glaw!) and the lake never gets dirty! The team arrives at the site of the lake just after noon, and spends time exploring around the lake. The team also meets up with a couple of local Miju Mishmi fishermen who help with breakfast the following day. Akanksha and team also get a chance to share a meal with the fishermen and try out some of the local food. The views of the Glaw lake the following morning at sunrise are something to treasure - the mystical lake covered with mist and crystal-clear water as the first rays of the sun shine on the camping area. Akanksha also has a chance to go on a short boat ride on a raft made by the fishermen. Miju Mishmi are one of the prominent tribes of the north east and are a very hardy people surviving on the resources from the mountains and forests. Akanksha shares some background about the tribe and their ways of life. Life on Earth is undergoing its sixth ever mass extinction, one that is entirely driven by humans. Amongst the multitude of “global change” factors causing species' extinctions, climate change and the loss and degradation of natural habitats are major causes. This is especially the case for species in tropical mountain ranges, where most of Earth's terrestrial biodiversity is concentrated, and where species tend to be thermally sensitive. Umesh Srinivasan and his team study how forest degradation combines with climate change to impact Himalayan biodiversity at multiple levels, from geographic range shifts to behaviour and demography. Their main ongoing work is in the eastern Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh, where they have been monitoring bird populations in primary and logged forests for a decade using mist netting and bird ringing. They combine this with behavioural observations to understand how climate change and forest loss are altering the composition of mixed-species bird flocks across the elevational gradient. In addition to the Arunachal long-term project, they work with various institutions to study the impacts of global change drivers on Himalayan birds in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Almost all their work happens in the field. Apart from the research that they do, Dr. Srinivasan also works with the Bugun community of Singchung village in Arunachal Pradesh and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department on a range of conservation issues. These initiatives include wildlife and nature education for schoolchildren from Arunachali tribal communities and the management of the Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve, established to protect the critically endangered Bugun Liocichla. Before joining IISc, Dr. Srinivasan was a postdoctoral fellow with David Wilcove at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He did his PhD on the demographic impacts of selective logging on birds in Arunachal Pradesh with Suhel Quader at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. His MSc was in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from the Wildlife Conservation Society-National Centre for Biological Sciences. His undergraduate studies were in medicine at Government Medical College, Mysore. 1. Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that 3 more patients have been discharged from hospitals and that there are 9 active cases that remain as of today. He tweeted,”Glad that 3 more patients are being discharged today. # 2 Morigaon patients from MMCH, Guwahati # 1 patient from Civil Hosp, Golaghat. Additionally, one patient of Nagaland admitted at GMCH, Ghy is also being discharged. Only 9 active cases remain, as on date.” Sarma had also tweeted earlier to inform that 30 out of 33 districts in the state have fallen under Green Zone.@ Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa said that the state has sufficient ICU beds and quarantine centres, PPE kits and COVID-19 facilities. He said during a press conference that Assam is in talks with Centre to rescue stranded citizens outside state and a workable solution might soon arrive. Sarma also said that Government employees will also get their full salary in the month of May. They will receive this on 8 May 2. Two COVID-19 patients have recovered from the infection and have tested negative, informed Chief Minister of state Conrad Sangma. He sent out some latest updates on this through his tweets. Meghalaya has also declared 10 out of 11 districts as “Green Zone.” Inter-district movement of vehicles will also be allowed now, official say. 3. 1 tonne of COVID-19 medical supplies for Arunachal reach Guwahati via Delhi. Pema Khandu, CM of Arunachal Pradesh tweeted on this saying, “Protective equipments to fight #COVID19 continue to pour in. Nearly 1 tonne of medical supplies consisting of PPEs, VTM kits & medicines for Arunachal today reached Guwahati via #AirIndia cargo flight from Delhi. A testimony to relentless effort by the centre to keep us all safe.” 4. Rebroadcast of Ramayana smashes viewership records worldwide, Doordarshan informed through twitter handle. The decision to broadcast the show was taken due to lockdown amid coronavirus pandemic that has left thousands dead all around the world. Doordarshan had tweeted, “WORLD RECORD!! Rebroadcast of #Ramayana on #Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April.”

As of now 16 people from Assam have tested positive for coronavirus. All of them had attended Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Dargah in New Delhi. 15 people with Nizamuddin connection yet to be traced in Assam, informed state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Assam Health Minister has said that 162 ICU beds with ventilators have been prepared for patients who test positive for coronavirus at at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). A new super-specialty place at GMCH was created with an investment of Rs 10.13 crores by the PWD. Before Bihu, GMCH will have 200 ICU beds with ventilators, Sarma said. He added that 11000 PPP kits and more than 1 lakh N95 kits are available with the state government. 2 Assamese, 13 Bangladeshis who attended Tablighi Jamaat Markaz in Delhi's Nizamuddin area and then returned to Thane in Maharashtra have been put under home quarantine. "Their test reports will be available by tomorrow. On the basis of the report, further action will be taken," Subhas Burse, DCP Mumbra told media. Nagaland government has announced that it will provide a sum of ₹10Lac to health workers in the event of some accident while treating #COVID2019 patients. The sum will be provided in addition to the Rs 50 lakh insurance scheme provided to COVID-19 health workers under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana A man from Manipur who attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi has tested positive for coronavirus. This takes the state count to two patients found COVID-19 positive. After the first COVID-19 positive case was reported from Arunachal, 12 more people who had gone to Delhi's Nizamuddin to attend Islamic religious congregation have been traced. There were 19 people from the state who were attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi last month. Aldrin Lyngdoh, a migrant worker from Meghalaya, committed suicide in Agra. He accused his employer in a FB post for not supporting him during the lockdown period. He also stated that he was a thief when he was young and that he had left the state for better opportunities. Tabligi Jamaat chief Maulana Saad Khandhlawi has released an audio message saying he is in quarantine. He has also urged his followers to follow the law.“Quarantine yourself, no matter where you are, it is not against Islam or Shariyat,” he said.“I am in self-quarantine in Delhi as advised by the doctors and appeal to all Jamaat wherever they are in the country to follow the directives of the law,” Khandhlawi is reportedly saying in the clip. An FIR has been lodged against the Maulana for organizing a religious gathering at Nizamuddin in Delhi. This despite the government urging people to cancel all religious gatherings. The police have conducted raids at some of his residences and are on the lookout for the Chief of the sect. Khandhlawi's great grandfather was the founder of the movement Government has launched Aarogya Setu which is essentially a COVID-19 tracker app that can let users know if they have accidentally come in contact with anyone who later tested coronavirus positive.The app uses the location of the user and Bluetooth data to determine the results. Dharavi in Mumbai has reported its first death from coronavirus. Dharavi is considered to be Asia's biggest slum therefore the probability of spread of infection can be much higher in the area. After the death of the person, the area where he stays has been sealed. The person who owns a garment shop did not have any travel history. Those in touch with the person have been stamped and quarantined. His family members' swab has been taken and results are being awaited.

Sanjoy Kishan, MLA from Tinsukia and Jogen Mohan, MLA from Mahmora were sworn in as ministers on Saturday at Raj Bhawan in Guwahati. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance & Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Culture Minister Naba Kumar Doley, BJP president Ranjeet Dass and MPs Queen Oja and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa along with others were present during the event. Kishan belongs to the tea tribe community and Mohan comes from the Ahom community. Nok Air will temporarily suspend flights between Guwahati and Bangkok starting January 20. The flight which takes off twice a week is expected to resume services on April 12, 2020. The flight schedule for April will be out soon. Passengers who had booked tickets between the period will get a full refund, Nok Air announced in an alert. Nok Air launched its services in the city on September 22, 2019. With a view to make Sri Surya Pahar a tourist-friendly archaeological site with all the necessary facilities, the Goalpara district administration has taken several recent initiatives to uplift it. The Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara Varnali Deka inaugurated a newly constructed guest house at Sri Surya Pahar Campus which will fulfill a long pending demand of the visiting tourists to this popular site. Besides, the district administration arranged ten numbers of large size dustbins to be placed all over the area which is donated by the Goalpara Municipality Board. 13-year-old weightlifter Golom Tinku won the first gold for the state of Arunachal Pradesh at the ongoing Khelo India Games in Guwahati. The weightlifter won gold in Under-17, 55kg weightlifting competition at Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Guwahati. Tinku broke the 55kg Junior National record for the clean and jerk in Bihar recently. Tinku comes from a farming family in Arunachal. All pending cases of sexual harassment on Sports Authority of India (SAI) campuses will be disposed off within the next four weeks, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said. Rijiju's statement comes in response to a report which said that little or no action has been taken in 45 cases of sexual harassment that were reported from 24 SAI institutes over the last 10 years. Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said that the NPR process is “disguised” to carry out NRC in the country. Chidambaram who was in Kolkata to conduct a leadership training camp among state party leaders urged political parties opposing CAA, NRC to come together and stand united. He said that this was a fight to save the Constitution of the country. He also praised students for leading protests against CAA and fighting for “constitutional integrity.” Senior lawyer Indira Jaising was slammed by many after she urged Asha Devi, Nirbhaya's mother, to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who had pardoned her husband Rajiv Gandhi's killer Nalini. Asha Devi had expressed disappointment over the decision of a Delhi court which issued fresh death warrants against the convicts. The Nirbhaya convicts will now be hanged to death at Delhi's Tihar Jail at 6 a.m. on February 1st. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Government of India told reporters that Sardar Patel's, Statue of Unity in Gujarat will create an “economic ecosystem around it worth at least Rs one lakh crore in the years to come.” Goyal was in Gujarat to examine the ongoing construction work of the Kevadiya-Vadodara railway line. Joshy Kalluveettil from Kerala filed a Right to Information application seeking documents that can prove Prime Minister Modi's Indian Citizenship. Kalluveettil filed the application with the public information officer of Chalakkudy municipality on January 13. Kalluveettil told media that the application reflects concerns of people who will have to prove their citizenship.

In the latest episode of NL Hafta, Abhinandan Sekhri is joined by the usual gang of Raman Kirpal, Manisha Pande and Madhu Trehan, as well as Nitin A Gokhle, a national security analyst, and Samrat, a journalist and author.The conversation kicks off with Indo-Pak tension, with Abhinandan asking Nitin about the details of the air strikes on JeM camps and the non-credible information that flowed with it. Nitin rules out the possibility of ascertaining the "number of terrorists killed in the strike". However, he says: “To me, the significance of the strike was not in numbers, it was about crossing the red line … and planning.” Madhu explains the reportage of the air strike, saying, “When we get statements from the government during the conflict, I think it has to be just context with government sources.” She says it prevents journalists from jumping the gun and puts the onus on government. The panel is unanimously annoyed about the unconfirmed and propagandist reportage by sections of Indian media. Manisha feels it warrants criticism from the international community.When asked about dos and don’ts for defence correspondents, Nitin says, “Don’t be in a hurry to give out everything you get … It’s more important what you don’t write than what you write.”The conversation moves to a discussion on the protests in Arunachal Pradesh over the Permanent Residence Certificates. Abhinandan says: “I don’t get that feeling when I went to Arunachal … it doesn’t seem like a kind of place which I would imagine would burn deputy CM’s house down.” He asks Samrat why it reached such a level. Samrat says, “Politics of indigeneity is very much there, inter-tribal rivalry … tribal divide … these are actually big things.” He adds that tourists don't face things like this.The discussion covers Caravan’s article where reporter Ajaz Ashraf tabulated soldiers killed in Pulwama on a caste basis. Raman says, “The sample that they have taken is very, very small … I think caste still dominates the class.” Manisha says, “I think the article borrows its narrative from … American media after the Iraq war. I have a central problem with one saying that the war in India is driven by Hindu nationalism—because Kashmir and Chhattisgarh where most of the CRPF is deployed have existed before Hindu nationalism rose.”Listen up! The first phase of the journey includes Arunachal, Nagaland and Assam. Once the duo saw through the tough route through Silchar and made their way through to Meghalaya. The first stop was the scenic Jaintia hills and Jowai. This offers some pristine views that are very untouched. Head over to the offbeat Leshka dam to check out the lovely colors of water. Next stop at the stunning Krang suri falls, yes 'that' iconic waterfalls you've seen in the pictures Experience the crystal clear waters of Dawki next, another one that is popular in the media. Prasanjit then heads on to his most favorite place from the trip - Nongkrem village where one can trek to see the root bridges You can also visit Nongriat to see the famous double decker root bridges. Finally, plan to spend the last leg of the journey in Cherapunji visiting the popular spots like Nohkalikai falls, Rainbow falls, David Scott memorial as well as a number of scenic hills and forests. Experience the flavorful food of Meghalaya, sans the spicy masalas, but tasty nonetheless. Prasanjit ends the trip by riding to Guwahati and flying back to Mumbai to attend to some urgent business.
