A sermon by Rev. Mitchell Hay and Rev. Barbara Lemmel. Hebrew Scripture - 1 Samuel 3:1-11, 19 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if God calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Then the Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. . .” As Samuel grew up the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. Gospel - John 1:35-46 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!' The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?' They said to him, ‘Rabbi' (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?' He said to them, ‘Come and see.' They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah' (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas' (which is translated Peter). The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow me.' Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.' Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.'

In 2017 on the lands of the Anangu, Cobble Cobble woman Megan Davis stepped out from the shadow of Uluru and delivered the Uluru Statement from the Heart for the very first time. It was the first time anyone would hear it, and was a process that showed the power of First Nation Voices.  Before this momentous day, Megan Davis had embarked upon a deliberative process bringing together the 13 regional dialogues around Australia, asking First Nations people for the first time: what does recognition mean to you?  The answer: “Voice and a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history”. Since then the call for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament has not been taken up by the Federal Government, but it's time to face some hard truths. Why can't Australian political leaders engage with the wishes of Australia's First Nations People? Will white Australia ever accept the truth about our history? Would the scandalous policy failure of ‘closing the gap' bring down governments if it was related to any other issue? Underlying all of these questions lie the uncomfortable conversations about sovereignty, treaty and reparations that we need to tackle now. In just 10 minutes, Professor Megan Davis will take you through time. Unsettle you. And open your eyes to how we can create a better future for all Australians through constitutional reform. 10 Minute Genius10 Minute Genius is a programme designed to create a space in which you can engage with new ideas. As part of our series: Expanding the Breath, expanding Restorative Justice into family, society and workplaces we have a conversation with the Editor and Contributor of Colorizing Restorative Justice: Voicing Our Realties, Dr. Edward C Valandra/ Waŋbli Wapȟáha Hokšíla, about Settler Colonialism- the theft and illegal occupation of Indigenous land and the elimination of Indigenous peoples. Edward shares critical insights about who is a settler, how the near genocide of Indigenous peoples is the United State’s ‘first harm’, and the violent impacts Indigenous peoples continue to experience today. Throughout the conversation, we examine the limitations and strengths of Restorative Justice to effectively engage with Settler Colonialism, and grapple with Edward’s call to all Restorative Justice practitioners to address this ‘first harm’ in order to make the transformative potential of the Restorative Justice movement a reality. We also explore with Edward how non- Indigenous people can come into consciousness of this legacy of this ‘first harm’ by first ‘unsettling’ themselves with strategies and methods such as challenging their own ‘settler fragility’, thoughtfully practicing land acknowledgments and continuing to develop their ability to act against Settler Colonialism. Daily Gratitude Call

Private time to me is quiet time. I give myself quiet time every morning in my Daily GPS (Gratitude, Prayer and Scripture). This is the time when my heart is most open. There is no noise or demands on my time. I give myself to divine tutoring.I realized that because I am open to inspiration during this time, that I am really not alone. I am inviting God to be with me.If we don’t proactively choose to give ourselves private time, sometimes God has to resort to waking us up in the middle of the night when our minds are at rest. I always keep a pen and paper by my bed in case this happens. I am super grateful anytime God chooses to share some insights with me.I mentioned this song on our call today. This video and interpretation by the band Disturbed, gives such meaning to the words of the song “Silence”. I visit my old friend Darkness when I close my eyes every morning in my Daily GPS and listen to the inspired messages it has for me. As you watch to the end of the video, consider that many received inspiration in the form of music or a message and even write down what they receive but never share it. The power of going to silence is receiving an inspired message and acting on it! If not acted on, the silence becomes a form of separation that takes us away from our source of truth and toward regret and resentment of the success of others. The beauty of this interpretation of the classic song is that those who are not afraid to follow through with inspired creation, can empower those who fear the judgement of man. With regard to the judgement of man, I loved what one of our live call participants shared about Elisha the Prophet who asked that his servant (who feared man) have his eyes opened to see what Elisha saw.16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. -2 Kings 6:16I submit that this is still true today. There are angels and past generations and possibly even future generations who are supporting us in our righteous endeavors. There is no need to fear taking bold action on those inspired messages while we are in our private time with God.Private time can be carved out anywhere that is away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Even putting our phone in another room can be conducive to private time.Choosing private time is not really even about filling our cup. It is about being in alignment with what feels right to us. Most of us believe that sitting quietly is not productive and that we should always be busy. I invite you to consider that these may be beliefs that simply are not true.Choosing based on what feels right in the moment leads to integrity and self-love. And private time is the perfect quiet moment where we can hear what our hearts are telling us is right.New Ideas to ConsiderI am in integrityI am open and honest in my private timeMy private time is necessary and productiveI choose based on what is right for me nowSupport the show (https://wylenebenson.com)

Sarah Peterson from Unsettle and Suburban Finance and I talk about starting an online side hustle to make extra money or to eventually develop a full-time business. Long episode description: Many of you personal finance blog readers may already know Sarah Peterson from when she ran When Life Gives You Lemons Add Vodka, or maybe you read her current personal finance blog Suburban Finance. Or maybe you know her from her new project Unsettle.org. This girl even has her own podcast! She's everywhere!  I've known Sarah for a number of years. I actually met her at the same time I met Liquid Independence almost four years ago. I don't know if I've ever told this story on the blog before, but around that time myself and Sarah and a few other personal finance bloggers in Vancouver decided to meet up in person for the very first time. We coordinated everything over email and I just prayed to God that at least one of them would be normal. It's hard to tell how a person really is just by their online persona, and meeting people off the Internet is still kind of sketchy. Luckily everyone was normal, well as normal as personal finance bloggers can be, and I've kept in touch with Sarah ever since. When I first met her I believe she was just graduating from post-secondary and was about to start her first full-time gig in HR. Well, a lot has happened in Sarah's career since then because she's now a full-time freelancer, business coach and online marketing maven! In this episode I pick her brain about her new life as a solopreneur and what she does to make all of her money online. Whenever I come across someone who has quit their full-time job to start their own business, I'm always in awe of them. In awe because I think it's super courageous to work for yourself, and also because I find it a bit crazy. But Sarah knows her stuff, and even after we finished recording I continued to pick her brain even more over sushi. Don't worry, I paid (it was the least I could do!). Thanks so much Sarah for being on the show, and man do I have a lot of ideas for online products now! "Your target audience is not a demographic, it's a mindset and a problem." - Sarah Peterson About: Sarah Peterson- Founder of Unsettle.org Overview: Sarah Peterson is an entrepreneur, traveller, and writer from Vancouver, BC Canada. She is the author of Unsettle.org, where she helps people stop settling for work they don't love. Sarah is focused on what she is passionate about. Through that passion, Sarah has created a successful company where she teaches entrepreneurs how to stop settling in their career. During this interview, she shares some insightful tips on how to find your niche, your target audience, and why you shouldn't use ads to make money from your blog. Highlights: Before Unsettle.org: Prior to Unsettle, Sarah worked in HR, and was a finance blogger by night but it was not something she was completly passionate about. It didn't gain as much traction as she wanted in the 4 1/2 years she worked on it and she felt limited in her ability to travel and work on what she really wanted to do. So, she launched Unsettle.org where she "believes you should never settle for work you don’t love." Now, she only takes work/clients that she is excited about. What is Unsettle.org: Unsettle is a website resource for entrepreneurs Sarah started in January 2015. It's a place where entrepreneurs are taught how not to settle for work they don't love. Although, Sarah doesn't believe that everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur, she does believe that everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit in them that can be utilized within an organization or on your own personal projects. Business Model: Unsettle.org is based around helping people for free. Her company makes money through affiliate income. Sarah only refers her audience to things that she actually uses and loves. She also does one-on-one coaching with clients and only takes on about 3 a month. Training Tips From Sarah How You Can Find Your Niche: In order to find your niche, there are four questions you should ask yourself: 1. What are your interests?  2. What is your art? (i.e., builder, writer, homemaker, anything that you are creating is considered art)  3. What are your unique skills?  4. How can you help people?  If you don't know where to start to find what you're good at, go to your best friend, or someone who you're very close to and ask them.
