Aujourd'hui, je serai à la plage avec mon amie Lucille ! Lucille est originaire de Kisumu, au Kenya! L'été est enfin là ; Lucille et moi sommes en vacances, loin de New York. -What a beautiful day! -Yes, it is hot. The sun is hot. I am hot.-Yes, but the water is cold. I am cold.-Do you have some water, please? I am thirsty.-Yes, I have water. Do you want to drink?-Yes, I want to drink. Thank you!-Do you have a sandwich, please? I am hungry.-Yes, I have two sandwiches. Do you want to eat?-Yes, I want to eat. Thank you!-You are welcome!-What a nice day!-Yes, I am happy.-Me too.1- Vocabulaire:Le mot « today » (aujourd'hui) est un mot composé contenant le mot « DAY » : TO - DAYSur la base de cette racine « Day », « What a beautiful day! » et « What a nice day ! » signifient : « Quelle belle journée! »Note : Vous vous souvenez de la leçon 5 ? Quand notre serveur Bill souhaitait une bonne journée à ses clientes ? Il disait :« Have a nice day ! » pour – Passez une bonne journée !C'est encore et toujours le même mot : « Day » !Mots déjà appris:Le soleil: The sun – The sun is hotTrès: very – The water is very hotS'il-te-plait: pleaseMerci: Thank youDe rien: You are welcomeJe suis heureuse: I am happyMoi aussi: Me tooNouveaux mots: CHAUD et FROID (HOT and COLD)Le soleil est chaud : The sun is hotL'eau est froide : The water is coldIL FAIT: IT ISVous connaissez déjà: « The sun is hot » pour Le soleil est chaud« It is hot » ? signifie: « Il fait chaud »L'expression : “It is” est utilisée pour parler de la météo:- Il fait chaud : It is hot-Il fait froid : It is cold-Il fait beau : It is sunny-C'est nuageux : It is cloudy2- Grammaire: L'auxiliaire “AVOIR” - “TO HAVE”Révision de l'auxiliaire “Être” - « To be » (leçon 3):I am You are He/she/it isWe areYou areThey areConjuguons maintenant l'auxiliaire “Avoir” – To have :J'ai - I haveTu as - You haveIl a - He hasElle a - She hasNous avons - We haveVous avez - You haveIls ont - They haveElles ont - They haveExemples soutirés du texte :-Tu as de l'eau? Do you have water?-Oui, j'ai de l'eau. Yes, I have some water-Tu as un sandwich? Do you have a sandwich?-Oui, j'ai deux sandwichs. Yes, I have two sandwichesNOTEZ:- I am thirsty = J'ai soif- I am hungry = J'ai faim- I am hot = J'ai chaud- I am cold = J'ai froidEn anglais, nous utilisons « être » et non « avoir » pour parler de la soif, de la faim, de la chaleur, du froid:- Je suis assoiffé(e) – I am thirsty- Je suis affamé(e) - I am hungry- Je suis pris(e) de chaleur – I am hot-Je suis(e) mort de froid – I am coldVous voyez qu'il est possible d'employer l'auxiliaire être en français ! Et Enfin…. Vous verrez souvent : I'm pour I am-I am cold- I'm cold·You're pour You are-You are welcome-You're welcome·It's pour It is-It is hot-It's hotCe sont des contractions de verbes utilisées à l'oral et à l'écrit familier. Le sens reste le même, mais l'intonation change.❗️Afin de pouvoir traduire le texte, il est bon de savoir que :-Do you want to drink? Veut dire Tu veux boire? - Do you want to eat ? veut dire Tu veux manger?Mais nous n'allons pas apprendre ces verbes aujourd'hui. Je crois que vous avez déjà la tête bien pleine!
Today, we will be on a beach with my very good friend Cécile! Summer is finally here, and we are both on vacation, away from the city. Please listen to this text and try to understand the dialogue. We have learned that Aujourd'hui means today, rooted from the word “jour” for “day”: Au-jour-d'hui.-Based on that root “jour”, what could: “Quelle belle journée!” mean? It means: What a beautiful day!-We will go over the pronouns “What a”… later, but for today, let's remember the sentence as is: “Quelle belle journée!” Words we already know:Soleil: Sun - Le soleil est chaudTrès: very - L'eau est très froideS'il-te-plait: pleaseMerci: Thank youDe rien: You are welcomeJe suis heureuse: I am happyMoi aussi: Me tooCHAUD vs. FROID (Hot vs. Cold)- The sun is hot: le soleil est chaud (Sun is masculine, so the adjective “Chaud” takes the masculine form)-The water is cold: L'eau est froide (Water is feminine, so the adjective “Froid” takes the feminine form)IL FAIT: IT IS-You already know: Le soleil est chaud: The sun is hot-“Il fait chaud” means: “It's hot”This expression: “il fait” is used to talk about the weather:-It's hot: Il fait chaud-It's cold: Il fait froid- It's sunny: Il fait beau 2- Grammar: The verb “AVOIR” for “TO HAVE”We already learned: “TO BE”, but what about “TO HAVE”?Let's start by reviewing the auxiliary “To be” – “Être” (from lesson 3):I am - Je suisYou are - Tu esHe is - Il est She is - Elle est We are - Nous sommes You are - Vous êtes They are - Ils/elles sont ❗️Just a trick to remember a verb. Remove the gender forms and repeat the verb many times out loud.Let's conjugate the auxiliary “AVOIR”:I have: J'aiYou have: Tu asHe has: Il aShe has: Elle aWe have: Nous avonsYou have: Vous avezThey have: Ils/elles ontExamples from the text:-Do you have water? Tu as de l'eau? -Yes, I have some water and some coffee: Oui, j'ai de l'eau et du café.-Do you have a sandwich? Tu as un sandwich?-Yes, I have two sandwiches: Oui, j'ai deux sandwichs. NOTE:Cécile says: “J'ai soif” for “I am thirsty”“J'ai faim” for “I am hungry”Then we say:“J'ai chaud” for “ I am hot”“J'ai froid” for “I am cold”The French use “avoir” and not “être” because here, soif, faim, chaud, froid are not used as adjectives but as nouns. In fact, they really mean:- I have thirst – J'ai soif- I have hunger – J'ai faim- I have heat stroke – J'ai chaud- I have chills – J'ai froidFor translation purposes, it is good to know:- Tu veux boire? Means: Do you want to drink?-Tu veux manger? Means: Do you want to eat?But we will not go over these verbs, quite yet. I believe you have already learned so much, today!

C'est un mot composé provenant du mot «DAY» qui veut dire «jour».Ce même mot « day » est d'ailleurs utilisé par le serveur pour dire au revoir. Comme en français, il est possible de substituer «au revoir» par «bonne journée»Have a good day !Have a nice day !Enjoy your day !2. Les prix - PricesCombien ça coûte ? – « How much is it? », « what is the cost ? »Ça coûte 5 dollars – « It costs 5 dollars »Ou, au pluriel : Coffees cost 5 dollars, each.C'est très cher! – It is very expensive!L'adverbe “Très” - "very"C'est très cher! Aujourd'hui, nous allons conjuguer l'auxiliaire « être » en anglais, et nous allons apprendre à exprimer nos sentiments. Mon invité du jour est américain, il s'appelle Patrick! 1. Révisions: - Hello, see you soon and goodbye! (Bonjour, à bientôt et au revoir!)- Thank you and You are welcome (Merci et de rien)- What is your name? Par exemple : VERBE: I am eating – (Je mange) Le verbe « to eat » peut être utilisé seul dans une phraseAUXILIAIRE: I am – (Je suis) L'auxiliaire “to be” doit être suivi par: qui, quoi, comment, etc…❗️I'm Patrick / I'm a man / I'm American, etc….. La langue anglaise compte deux auxiliaires : « TO BE » (être) et « To HAVE » (avoir), mais pour aujourd'hui, nous nous concentrerons sur l'auxiliaire ÊTRE. Conjuguons « To be » au présent:I am - Je suisYou are - Tu esHe is - Il estshe is - Elle estIt is – c'estWe are - Nous sommesYou are - Vous êtesThey are - Ils / elles sont NOTE: Nous devons nous familiariser avec les pronoms afin d'apprendre à conjuguer les verbes: I, You, He, She, It, We, You, They Maintenant, ajoutons « To be » à ces pronoms:I amYou areHe isShe is It isWe areYou areThey are3- Les sentiments (feelings)Comme en français, les sentiments sont généralement associés avec l'auxiliaire « être”How are you? – Comment allez-vous?I am fine – ça vaI am doing well – Je vais bienI am not doing well – Je ne vais pas bien
Today, we will conjugate the verb “to be”, and we will learn how to express our feelings. 1- Let's first review the words already learned. - Bonjour, à bientôt et au revoir! (Hello, see you soon and goodbye!) - S'il te plaît / S'il vous plaît ( “If you please”, or more commonly “please”) - Merci (Thank you)- De rien (You are welcome) - Comment tu t'appelles? ou Comment t'appelles tu? (What is your name?) - La pluie et le soleil (the rain and the sun)2- To be or not to be:The verb “être” is not a verb but an “auxiliary” (“un auxiliaire” in French), meaning that it cannot be used alone but it is there to complement a verb, a noun or an adjective. For example: - Je mange (I am eating – It is a verb and can be used alone in a sentence)- Je suis (I am – It needs to be followed by what, how, who, etc.)…. Je suis Marcelle / Je suis une femme / je suis française, etc…..NOTE: The French language counts two auxiliaries: "être” (to be) and “avoir” (to have), but today, we will only concentrate on ÊTRE.Let's conjugate “to be” in the present tense:Je suis – I amTu es – You areIl est – He isElle est – she isNous sommes – We areVous êtes – you areIls sont – they areElles sont – they are NOTE: While we are learning to conjugate “to be”, we should also learn the French pronouns: Jetuil / ellenousvousils / elles1- Feelings with the verb "to go" - Les sentiments avec ALLER:Just like in English, feelings are generally paired with “to be,” except for: Comment ça va? (how are you doing?)Ça va (OK)Ça va bien (doing well)Ça va mal (Not doing well)2- Feelings with "to be" - Les sentiments avec ÊTRE

- Season 2, Episode 7 - The American Painters of the Great Depression: The Example of Thomas Donnelly (Thesis written by Cathy Mahon and narrated by Stephen Sniffin)Thomas Donnelly was born of Irish descent on February 25th 1893 and grew up in Washington D.C where he obtained his bachelor's degree from the Corcoran School of Art. In 1915, he moved to New York City to launch his career as an artist. He studied at the Art Students League of NY, and later on became a member of the Board. In 1917, Donnelly was drafted to the armed services under the Artists of the War Commando and joined World War I until the armistice. Back in NY, Donnelly rapidly became a well-known regionalist artist among the art connoisseurs of the city for his landscapes, coastal scenes, portraits and still life paintings. He was exhibited in museums, fairs and cultural events, all around the city. His responsibility as a painter was to pay tribute to nature and to bring the rural neighbourhoods into the cities. On a summer day of 1923, the artist drove through Westchester County; he stopped near a Welcome to Valhalla sign, he carefully sharpened his lithographic crayons and slowly immortalized the village on a piece of paper. On this very same day, Thomas Donnelly fell in love with the little village of Valhalla. Today, his sketch Overlooking Valhalla is part of the Whitney Museum of American Art's permanent collections. In 1925, Thomas met Eve Kollgen, a 23-year old young English lady aspiring to become an artist. After dating for a few months, they got married and built their home in Valhalla. The four-bedroom house was located less than an hour away from NY, right next to the dam, on 44 Howard Avenue. They built it big enough to welcome a family. Donnelly had it all planned; he would commute to the city for his exhibits, would come home each night to his family, and would continue painting the countryside. Little did the know that he had invested in a house that would soon become a financial burden. The Roaring 20s were about to come to an end and the stock market was about to crash. On 29 October 1929, the biggest financial crisis in US history abruptly hit the country, driving Donnelly's artwork to remain unsold, his bills to accumulate, and his quality of life to collapse. Because of the depression, Donnelly's clients could no longer pay for his artwork. Within a few months, the rising star became a distant celebrity, with scarcer visits to NY City, and with exhibits more locally based. In June 1934, Donnelly wrote a desperate letter to Forbes Watson, the director in charge of the art program of the Works Progress Administration and to President Roosevelt himself, begging them to implement a strong Federal project that would replace the local programs, and would truly help the struggling artists. His letters did not remain unread, and when the Federal Art Project of the Work Progress Administration was finally launched in August 1935, Thomas Donnelly immediately became a proud federal employee. For $40 a month, his job was to embellish America and paint “the American Scene” on public buildings. On September 16th 1948, Eve, Thomas Donnelly's beloved bride of 22 years, died at the early age of 45 years old, leaving the artist devastated. From then on, he refused all invitations from the major institutions and became a part-time schoolteacher in Valhalla public school and a jury in the local art contests. He finally remarried 18 years later. But at last, on April 24th 1971, after a long and full life, Thomas Donnelly, the World War I veteran, the talented New Yorker, the artist of the Great Depression, and the local resident of Valhalla, died peacefully at the age of 78 years old in his home.

- Season 1, Episode 6 -Today, we will craft our market analysis as part of our business plan. So first, what is a market analysis? According to Oxford University Press, a Market analysis is “the activity of gathering information about conditions that affect a marketplace.” You must take your market analysis very seriously as it will determine where you should settle down as a business owner, if you should rent a studio, buy a shop or work from home, if you should start a new business or purchase an existing one, and so much more. Your market analysis will help you target specific clients, launch your business at a certain time of the year or a specific economical period, and provide you with valuable information on how much you should borrow from your bank, and how long your loan should be set for. Let's focus on two major factors: 1- Finances With a full report in hands, you will be able to convince banks and other loan landers that your services or products will be embraced in your area. If you work well at crafting your report, they should trust that you will reimburse your small-business loan in no time! So be convincing!!!! 2- Advertising A market analysis will help you create your branding, apply that branding across your whole business, and consequently help you distinguish your business from your competitors'. It will also provide you enough information to communicate with a specific category of people who will be willing to pay for your products or your services. So how can we conduct a market analysis without breaking the bank? A market analysis requires time and patience, but it can be done! 1-separate your analysis into 2 main parts: Internal study: For your own knowledge, advertising and day-to-day financial survival External study: For potential loans or mortgages. 2-provide general information about the business you are planning to create, 3-target your customers by analyzing who they will be and where they will come from, 4-you will need to quantify these customers per month and per year. Also sort your revenues by season, meaning summer versus winter, school vacation versus off-peak seasons, etc. 5-who will be your competition? And how far will you be? 6-envision yourself in 1, 5, 7 and 10 years from now. Will your shop be big enough? Will you hire more staff? Will you purchase new material, will you export, import, etc.7-survey everyone around! Ask them what they need? How you could help them? How much they would be willing to pay, etc.... Run interviews, surveys and questionnaire! You may remember that in our latest episodes, we had created a business roadmap and written an action plan, it is now time to add them all to your files! All these steps will help you frame your business, assess the risks for the future and build a full dossier for your lender! What an amazing feeling! We are no longer dreaming about our business, we are now building it! So to resume, a business analysis should be seen as a skeleton, the spine that will lead you to success. Now that you have a business roadmap, an action plan and a business analysis for internal and external purposes, you finally hold the keys to success! If you, just like me, want to turn your life around, I would love to hear from you! You could share your journey and your lifelong dreams with us, so don't hesitate to contact me at: BBunclody@gmail.com. Don't forget to rate my channel and share it! - Season 1, Episode 5 -Hello, everyone, Cathy here and welcome back to my Podcast! I am coming back with great news! After a month of Podcasting, my channel was visited by 370 people from 14 countries worldwide, so thank you, everyone, and a very special thought to Colin and Justine for their fun and inspiring interviews! In our last episode, we defined the importance of an action plan, we also enumerated the steps towards success, we talked about our plans for the future, and we focused on the 5 “W's” and the 1 “HM” (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, and HOW MUCH). By now, you should have collected tons of interesting material and your project should start making sense, but in addition to all your research and accumulated data, I would recommend that you always try to share your ideas and plans with a special someone, anyone you trust, such as a friend or a family member, or, if you are planning to open a business with a third party, it is important to discuss your plans and become totally transparent with them. Never forget that success and happiness often go hand in hand and they rarely start with a secret, so keep sharing your dreams, your visions and your projects with people you trust and love, and always try to surround yourself with people who truly want to see you succeed in life. Today, we will focus on the third main bullet point of our action plan; which is “Action.” Of course, we are not ready to get out and concur the world, quite yet, but it is now time to pick-up the phone, send emails, and fill out forms. Do you remember the 1st W? Start contacting all the “who's” from your list! Each phone call, each email, each meeting you will be part of should be recorded for future reference. On your worksheet, enter the date, time, name, telephone number, email address and outcome of every conversation you are part of. This step is super important to keep track and move forward! For my part, I am keeping all my records on a PowerPoint presentation; I know this is not the most tech-savvy feature, but it works for me, so try to find your own format or software according to your personality and your skills. Time for graphics! If you are planning to build a house, start drawing your dream house and look for inspiration on google for space planning and interior design! If you are envisioning to become an artist, start working on an artwork for your webpage, if you are planning to write a book, design your book cover, if you want to create a YouTube Account, work on your logo and branding. This is the time when creativity should shine! Have fun! Also know that your draft creations will save you tons of money in the long run, when you hand over your project to a professional. In my case, my architect used my plans and charged me much less that if he had had to design my house and Bed and Breakfast from scratch, so be creative, smart and cost-effective!Please, please! keep an open mind and know that you will change your mind on many occasions! Your logo will look amazing today and horrible tomorrow, your pen name will sound intriguing tonight and ridiculous by next week, the colors chosen for your letterhead will appear vibrant this afternoon, and old fashion tonight… It is not only OK to change your mind, but it is highly recommended! Remember, the world was not created in a day, and even after millions of years, humans are still messing up! The key to creativity is not to rush into your decisions, but rather to think them through, over and over, and over again.... Next, we will learn how to conduct a market analysis to obtain important information on your market. We will also invite our first Business Coach to the show, so don't miss out on this great occasion to learn from a pro! For more info, contact me at: BBunclody@gmail.com.
- Season 1, Episode 4-Today, we will start drafting our action plan and we will develop fun strategies for personal and business success. We will define the steps towards our end goal:STEP 1: Coming-up with an idea and define your end goal.STEP 2 - How to draft an action plan? You may have already heard about the 5 W's: WHO: Who will be involved? WHAT: What are your objectives?WHERE: Where will your final project be located? WHY: Why do you want to do this? WHEN: When are you planning to complete your project? In addition to these 5 W's, let's not forget the topic that no one wants to talk about, “HM”, for “How Much.”In our next show, we will continue to draft our action plan and will keep working towards making our dreams, a reality. If you like my channel, please do not hesitate to rate it or share it. Also, if you feel that you could add on to this channel, or if you want to share your project on the air, please do not hesitate to contact me at: BBunclody@gmail.com Stay tuned for Episode 5 and never stop dreaming!
