In this episode, Pam takes us on a journey through Italy, sharing how she and her sister made the most of credit card points to explore some of the country's most iconic spots. From the excitement of snagging business class seats on Turkish Airlines to their adventures in Rome, Lake Como, and Cinque Terre, this episode is packed with tips, laughs, and a few surprises. Flying in Style with Turkish Airlines Pam kicks things off by describing how she and her sister flew business class round-trip for just 90,000 miles each! Although they traveled on Turkish Airlines' older plane configuration, Pam found the seats spacious and comfortable. With quality food, incredible service, and even tea lights during dinner, Turkish Airlines left a lasting impression. Exploring Chicago's Park Hyatt Before heading overseas, Pam and her sister spent a day in Chicago, staying at the luxurious Park Hyatt. With a stunning view of the city, a Viator tour, and some quality time on the Navy Pier, their Chicago stay set the tone for a relaxing trip. Lake Como's Grand Hotel Victoria Lake Como is Pam's favorite Italian destination, and staying at the Grand Hotel Victoria felt like a dream come true. Despite a minor hiccup with their limo service, she describes the hotel's new beach club and the serene beauty of Lake Como's small towns. A day trip to Varenna made this part of the trip unforgettable. Wandering Through Cinque Terre Pam and her sister finally made it to Cinque Terre, a place they'd planned to visit on a past trip. Staying at Hotel Pasquale in Monterosso, they explored the charming coastal villages by train, enjoyed the local gelato, and took in the stunning coastal views. Pam notes that, while crowded during the day, Cinque Terre transforms into a peaceful, magical place once the cruise crowds leave. Wrapping Up in Milan The sisters ended their Italian adventure with a stay at the Sheraton Malpensa before flying back. Pam shares a final tip for using points on international trips, especially when navigating multiple cities and modes of transportation. For Pam, Italy is a place she'll never tire of, and her love for the country and its culture shines through in every story. If you're dreaming of an Italian getaway or curious about how to make the most of points and miles, this episode is a must-listen! Hit play now to hear the full story! All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Anne Belden, Paul Gullixson, and Beth Eurotas-Steffy as guest to the show. About "Inflamed": “Inflamed” is a story about the abandonment of more than 100 senior citizens at a luxury senior living complex during a catastrophic wildfire in California's Wine Country in 2017. The book offers an hour-by-hour account of the desperate attempts by family members and others to reach and rescue their loved ones from Villa Capri, an assisted living and memory care center, and Varenna, a massive independent living community. The book then chronicles the battle for truth and accountability against the facility's powerful owners who tried to deny what happened and silence their critics, going as far as financing a million-dollar recall of the district attorney who investigated the botched fire evacuation. About Anne Belden: Anne Belden runs the journalism program and advises the newsroom at Santa Rosa Junior College. Before teaching, she spent 18 years as a journalist, working as a reporter and editor on the San Francisco Peninsula where her news, feature, and investigative articles were recognized by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, San Francisco Peninsula Press Club, and Parenting Publications of America. Anne holds a bachelor's degree in mass communication from UCLA and a master's degree in media studies from Stanford University. She lives in Sebastopol, California. About Paul Gullixson: Paul Gullixson is a seasoned journalist with more than 35 years of experience working for West Coast newspapers, including The Press Democrat, the San Francisco Chronicle and other Bay Area newspapers. As columnist and editorial writer for The Press Democrat, he played a key role in the newspaper winning the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the October 2017 fires. Paul currently serves as Communications Manager for the County of Sonoma. He lives in Santa Rosa, California.
In this episode, the FAQ is: What should I tell people who think I can't travel solo? Today's Destination is Lake Como, Italy Today's Misstep: Sometimes, you don't love your roommates when you share a room. Here's why. Travel Advice: Don't buy another timeshare. If you have one, it's really hard to sell it. FAQ: What do I tell people who think I can't travel solo? Answer: Ask them why not. Then listen. Then, address each one of their questions or comments if you like. No one says you need permission to travel solo, but it would be good to tell them you are prepared, have planned for things to go wrong, and have taken this travel step by step to be more likely to be successful. They may be telling you in a way that they will miss you, but don't know how to say that. They could also be jealous. They could wish they could make this trip themselves. So there could be a lot of hidden reasons why they have those opinions. Today's destination: Lake Como, Italy Lake Como, Italy, was a quick train ride from Milan, Italy. On a hot day, about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, I ventured to Lake Como to cool down. I went there solo for three days, staying in town at a hostel that cost me $150 a night for a “middle bunk.” That was the most I paid for sleeping anywhere around the world. It did have a bathroom with a shower en suite. It may have been less costly if I had booked earlier than two weeks in advance. Either way, here's some advice if you are heading there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Como_San_Giovanni_railway_station It was a quick walk from the Como San Giovanni train station to town, so you don't need a car here if you stay in the main city. The lake is a breathtaking view from wherever you are, so the water keeps you cool, even on a boat. Buy the all-day ferry ticket if you can stay for the day. https://lakecomotravel.com/boat-tours-ferry-lake-como/ https://www.navigazionelaghi.it/en/services/disabled-accessibility-and-prm/ Explore all the ferries and see the episode's notes with links, including accessibility information for getting on and off the ferries. I spent a full day on a ferry tour of the lake, three hours north at its furthest and with more than one tributary. I got off at Menagio and found a paid private club called Lido, but I did not swim there. A few minutes later, while swimming, I met a family from Denmark at a free swim spot. I walked the town and had Nutella-flavored gelato. I then Took the ferry to Varenna. I walked the town. Then, I took another Ferry to Bellagio. The line was too long to get back on, so I stayed on board. I got off later in the smaller town. I met another couple from Germany. They agreed it was dreadfully Hot. I Stopped to cool my feet in the sea at Argegno—thunderstorms in the morning. I walked to town. https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/lido-di-argegno#google_vignette I met a girl from Munich and her friend, who took a photo of me with some flowers. Bellagio has the George Clooney Villa. Most of the music I hear is American pop, not Italian. https://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/en/bellagio-lake-como-italy/poi-points-of-interest/public-transport-lake-como The lake is carved into a deep canyon. The hills above can be accessed by a special bus-like on rails called a Funicular. I took the Lake Como Funicular at 7:15 pm, running every 30 minutes until midnight. I highly recommend you do this and give yourself time at the top. The views are stunning, and there's a lot to explore here. It connects Como to the town of Brunate. The trip lasts 7 minutes and reaches the maximum allowed gradient of 55%—so that's steep! The fee is small: only 3 euros (4 dollars) for a single journey and 5,50 euros (7 dollars) for a round trip. So worth it! When leaving the train station, notice the sculpture of large human hands nearby. It is beautiful and dedicated to disabled service people. One hand is healthy,, and one is wounded. https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/monumento-ai-caduti-per-servizio Also, I noticed a little bit of Las Vegas here; inside the train station, there was mini gambling, like in Las Vegas. Ironically, there's a hotel in Las Vegas that's called Bellagio. Today's Misstep: You don't always love your roommates, right? I went to bed by 9 p.m. because I was busy the next day. My bed was the middle bunk, and there were 5 in the room booked. At 11 p.m., two girls arrived and talked in street voices. I asked them to quiet down nicely. They did not. I finally did get to sleep, but it was rude of them to wake others with their voices and chatter. Would you agree? Today's Travel Advice: Don't buy a timeshare or another one. If you have one, it's tough to sell it. We got conned when we tried to sell our timeshare, so don't let that happen to you. We only lost a few thousand dollars, but it was a warning. These are not easy to sell. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If they ask you for money, walk away. Timeshares are hard to navigate to use your week. I spend hours each year trying to book one, and it's very frustrating. I want to bring meaning to your future travels. Sign up for the Dr. Travelbest newsletter.

Today's highlights focus on Lake Como in northern Italy. The lake is shaped like an upside down Y. And at the center is the town of Bellagio. I stayed in the town of Como at the southwest base of the lake. If I had to do it over again, I'd stay somewhere more central like Varenna since I found the ferry schedule for Como to be infrequent and inexact. I would name it ferry ideas: "I'm a ferry and here are some places I might visit today.” I also learned they stop running fairly early so dinner is usually limited to the town you're staying in. My limited mobility made me feel like Lake Como was a pocket of leisure and wealth. I either needed the leisure of time to visit the other villages or shell out some big bucks for a private water taxi. If you have a group, hiring a boat for a day would be lovely. Cabs are expensive and hard to find. One highlight of Como was a gem of a restaurant I discovered by the train station. Schedule a meal at the lovely Figli dei Fiori. I had an absolutely divine lunch in the charming garden terrace. Want answers? Lake Kowell, Staff member of Disability Services and Legal Center in Santa Rosa, California We talk about the fiery disaster with Lake Kowell, a staff member at Disability Services and Legal Center. Ms Kowell, who lives with a spinal cord injury, has spent many days working in the Local Assistance and Evacuation Centers. Some of the information we discuss in this program: Governor Brown's veto of SB 649 which would have made it easier to build cell phone towers. Fire Fund for People with Disabilities. The California Foundation for Independent Living Centers has established the Richard Devylder Disaster Relief Fund. Donations made to the fund will be used to assist survivors with disabilities across the state who have lost their critical mobility and accessibility devices such as wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes, hearing aids and communication devices in the fires. Gift Cards for people with disabilities. Sterling Adaptives and Adaptive Technology Service will match donations. For very $10. you give, $30 will be given to people with disabilities. Electronic Visit Verification could mean onerous new rules for IHSS workers, the people who help us live independent lives. The State of California is being pressured to comply with a new Federal mandate. It could require workers and people with disabilities to call into an electronic system as they move from task to task. It is being resisted. If you want to get involved in pushing back against these new rules, send me an e-mail at adrienne@sonic.net. Produced by Adrienne Lauby. Hosted by Shelley Berman and Adrienne Lauby. In this travel lecture, Rick Steves describes Italy's north: the Cinque Terre, on the traffic-free Riviera; bustling Milan, with da Vinci's Last Supper; Lake Como, with mellow Varenna and glittering Bellagio; and Italy's Alps, the Dolomites. Lake Como — lined with palm trees and elegant pastel-colored villas, crowned by snowcapped mountains, and criss-crossed by a fleet of ferries and hydrofoils — is a great place to take a break from the intensity of Italy that one finds further south. Just an hour northeast of bustling Milan, Lake Como's ambiance seems to whisper luna di mele (honeymoon). Half the travelers you'll meet here have tossed their itineraries into the lake and are actually relaxing. Bellagio, the self-proclaimed "Pearl of the Lake" is a classy combination of Old World elegance and new world luxury. Varenna — on the less-developed side of the lake — has a romantic waterside promenade, a tiny harbor, and inviting narrow lanes.
