This week in Vegas history: June 4, 2020, Nevada casinos reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown. After more than two months closed, casinos across Las Vegas began reopening, including properties on the Strip, downtown, and around the valley. The D and Golden Gate reopened at 12:01 a.m., while other properties followed later that day. NEWS: Fertitta Entertainment is buying Caesars Entertainment in a deal valued at $17.6 billion, including about $11.9 billion in assumed debt. The deal would take Caesars private. Shareholders would receive $31 per share, which Reuters describes as nearly a 50% premium to Caesars' stock price before the deal was first reported in February. Tilman Fertitta's company already owns Golden Nugget casinos, the Houston Rockets, and a large restaurant/hospitality portfolio, including brands like Rainforest Café and Bubba Gump Shrimp. Caesars has been under pressure from softer Las Vegas visitation and growing competition in online betting, where rivals like FanDuel and DraftKings are stronger. Caesars' current leadership is expected to stay, including CEO Tom Reeg and CFO Bret Yunker. The deal includes a “go-shop” period through July 11, meaning Caesars can still consider competing offers. If completed, the acquisition would give Fertitta a much larger casino footprint: Caesars controls more than 50 casinos across North America, including Caesars Palace, Harrah's, and Eldorado, plus retail and online sports betting. The article notes the deal could face regulatory scrutiny because of the size and scope of the combined gaming/hospitality business. If you thought defense was just effort, think again. Zach Montana, Aaron Blackerby, and special guest Tom Petrini break down how the Spurs executed a flawless, strategic shutdown of the Thunder, turning a potential series disaster into a series-winning performance in a game that was as intense as it was layered with subtle adjustments. This episode digs into the meticulously crafted defensive schemes that held OKC to just 82 points, as the Spurs' longevity in the series hinges on mental toughness, on-the-fly adjustments, and psychological swagger — seamlessly blending tactical breakdown with behind-the-scenes anecdotes like the Spurs nuns and Victor Wembanyama's out-of-body 33-point explosion. The Knicks have a chance to seize control of the Eastern Conference Finals, and Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber dig into why Game 2 is about more than just taking a 2-0 lead. With the Western Conference turning into a possible war of attrition, the conversation centers on how important rest, health, and urgency could be if the Knicks keep pushing toward the NBA Finals. Evan and Tiki break down Mike Brown's adjustments, Karl-Anthony Towns' role as an offensive hub, the challenge of Cleveland's size, and how the Knicks can counter with shooting and smarter lineups. They also get into Hack-a-Mitch, Landry Shamet's impact, Kenny Atkinson's decisions, emotional insurance for nervous fans, and a sharp Yankees-Blue Jays pitching duel that came down to the smallest moments.
Wes Goldberg and Mike Shearer are back with Good Take on the RealGM Radio, starting with their reactions to the Oklahoma City Thunder taking Game 2 of the Western Conference finals vs the San Antonio Spurs. Mike opens with a bold free agency prediction. Then Wes argues that NBA teams are realizing something important: it's almost impossible to win a championship when your best player is over 30. From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama, to Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell, the league is shifting toward younger stars. What does that mean for Giannis trade offers, Kawhi Leonard's market, Kevin Durant's next move and teams like the Cavaliers or Rockets? Plus, Wes makes the case for Durant becoming the NBA's John Wick, and the guys lay out three ways to fix the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.
