Marketing and PR are like fraternal twins that often get mistaken for identical twins. Despite being similar in purpose, they’re markedly different in approach, but that doesn’t mean they can’t work together — in fact, they’re more powerful when they do. This week I sat down with Ashley Murphy (Brennan) to talk about her role in PR as Senior Vice President of Communications at Brown Harris Stevens and how she works with her company’s marketing department to communicate important messages about their brand. What we discussed: - What Ashley learned from her career in journalism that has helped shape her PR strategy - The biggest differences between PR and marketing, and how understanding these differences can help both departments work together better - Why it’s important for marketing and PR to have a functional relationship, and how to achieve it - Real-life examples of how Ashley has coordinated with the Brown Harris Stevens marketing department to promote important brand messages - The most important shifts in the world of PR that marketers should be aware of as they work with their PR teams
“What we're all about is rescuing produce that is at risk of going to waste because of imperfections.”Ashley Weingart (2:53-3:03) Ashley Weingart never set out to create a business, she just wanted to find a solution to a huge produce waste problem. While working for her husband's family business Weingart Produce, Ashley would visit farms and witness firsthand the shocking amount of produce that was left in the field. A perfectly good, healthy and nutritious piece of produce could be left in the field or rejected by buyers because of minor blemishes, being slightly off-sized or off-colored, which didn't sit well with Ashley. She couldn't watch perfectly edible produce get thrown out or plowed under when back at home, her community had people going hungry and students who don't have access to fruits and vegetables. “Truly every day we wake up with the goal of rescuing more of this food, not only for our customers, but also to get it into the hands of our neighbors in need.” Ashley Weingart (3:47-3:56) Did you know that more than half of the food that's produced in our nation goes to waste? A fire was struck and Ashley created a program for Weingart Produce to find a home for more of this produce and get it in the hands of people who don't have enough of it. What Ashley found, however, was that the average consumer who does have access to regular produce was extremely interested in purchasing “imperfect produce”. But just one year later after starting the program in 2016, Weingart Produce shut down and Ashley had to figure out what to do next. Everyone in the community who saw the impact of what the program did in just one year encouraged her to keep going, which is where Perfectly Imperfect Produce started. Perfectly Imperfect Produce is a subscription box model that lets consumers choose boxes of produce based on size, organic or conventional, and how much fruits or vegetables they want. At the beginning, boxes were just a mixed bag of all the different items PIP received without any customization available, but the team quickly realized that's not what consumers wanted. Some boxes fit the needs of consumers who love the surprise element. Getting new produce items they've never used before and figuring out what to do with them is exactly what's been missing! For other consumers, like the busy mom or dad who wants to provide their family with healthy meals, but don't have time for creativity, boxes like the Salad Bar Box, Soup Box or Smoothie Box are exactly what they need. You might be wondering why grocery retailers don't offer more imperfect produce. There's been an abundant amount of studies that misshapen or minorly-blemished fruits and veggies sold in brick-and-mortar retailers end up creating a larger carbon footprint because they just go to waste. It's critical that direct to consumer solutions like Perfectly Imperfect Produce are available for the consumers who will gladly enjoy these overlooked pieces of produce. Even the CDC shows that under 10% of Americans are eating the recommended daily amounts of fruits and vegetables, even though there's plenty of supply to go around. Ashley's company picks up extra produce from a local farm may have, for example, because of an overstock of items they grew for a restaurant that isn't in business anymore or can't utilize all of the produce because they are serving a smaller amount of customers. They also pick up items that are too small, too large, blemished, scraped, scarred, discolored and so forth from farms and local wholesalers. On top of selling to average consumers, Perfectly Imperfect Produce makes weekly donations to local Ohio food pantries to serve their mission of reducing food waste through improving healthy food access. Perfectly Imperfect Produce has just launched a Salad Bar Box, which includes local greens and salad staples, like cucumbers or tomatoes, plus extra goodies to make a delicious, creative salad. They also have Soup Boxes with everything you need to make a healthy, soothing soup, and Smoothie Boxes which includes the exact produce you need to jumpstart your morning or fuel your workout. There's also a new video series with local Ohio chef Douglas Katz who's walking you through specific produce items, what the differences in varieties are, and how to chop, slice, store and prepare them. Last month Douglas dove into winter squash and explained all the differences between acorn, butternut, spaghetti and Della cotta! “We're really passionate about demystifying fruits and vegetables and making them more approachable for the average home chef who wants to eat healthier, wants to get their kids and their family excited about eating more fruits and vegetables, but just needs a little help understanding what to do with those items.” Ashley Weingart (22:08-22:30) Ready to get your hands on a box of Perfectly Imperfect Produce? You can purchase at their website www.perfectlyimperfectproduce.com and choose from an all fruit box, all vegetable box, or mixed box, either organic or conventional, in a size that accommodates your family. Deliveries are available Wednesday through Friday to all of Northeast Ohio, and the Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo area on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis. Meal kits are just launching too! All of the ingredients are included for a specific recipe and the produce is chopped, diced and sliced for you. Chasing the Sun: Your Path to Permanent Weight Loss Through Sustainable Fitness, Health and Wellness
This week we chat with Ashley DelBello! No matter how much or how little support we get from our colleagues, we put SO much pressure on ourselves to succeed. And because of that, we sometimes feel guilty for taking extended vacation. Rarely do PR folks take more than 10 days off in a row. I know; I’ve done my own research on the topic! As professionals, we need to think about not only short vacations, but taking extended time away. It’s important for our mental health. Ashley is doing just that! She and I had a great chat about a number of topics. Ashley’s background. Her transition from agency to client-side. How Ashley determined this was the right time to take a break. How Ashley adjusted to life while starting on her break. The importance of self-care. Tips Ashley has to start her mornings off right. Thoughts people should have before making a decision to start a lengthy break. What Ashley is up to next. Thank you, Ashley, for your time! About Ashley: Ashley is an accomplished PR and communications professional with 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. She recently left her role as the Product Communications Lead at Neurocrine Biosciences to focus on personal development as well as to branch out on her own as a PR and communications consultant. Prior to this, Ashley served as a Director in the Corporate Affairs department at Amgen and was the U.S. Communications Lead for Amgen’s Cardiovascular and Bone franchises. In previous roles at Amgen, she worked on the Global Product Communications team where she managed communications for the Cardiovascular franchise, including pipeline products. Ashley has also held a variety of roles at several public relations agencies, including Weber Shandwick, Hill&Knowlton and Burson-Marsteller. Through her personal development work, Ashley has become passionate about mindfulness and the impact it can have on the world. She hopes to be able to bring mindfulness to the public school system one day. Ashley earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Spanish at Texas A&M University. She maintains her focus and sanity by doing a daily morning routine that includes gratitude, journaling, and meditation. She lives with her husband in Los Angeles and can be found on Instagram at @abdelbello.
On this episode of Muscle Intelligence, we start by discussing Gabrielle Bryan’s response to The Game Changers and whether it’s possible to have an unbiased opinion, especially in the contentious vegan/carnivore argument. We then get into the topic of productivity, which turns into an insightful how-to about time efficiency. Ben lays out the strategies he uses to get so much done and makes some convincing guesses as to how working absurdly long hours became a value in modern society. However, the main topic of the show is Ben’s muscle camp that Ashleigh was a guest on. You’ll hear Ashleigh’s main takeaway from the experience, a lesson that while working out, we don’t actually practice the basic principles of good form we all think we learned years ago. Form is key! Knowing how to do an exercise properly makes it ten times harder, sometimes removing the necessity for weights at all. Hidden in this is a lesson to get over your ego and be mindful of your body. Stop thinking you have learned it all because you haven’t. The best exercises are simple and can become even more effective through variation. Finally, we share our lesson of the week with you, which is a reminder to count your blessings, because nobody ever got anywhere by complaining! Timestamps Why vegan activists like James Cameron are really just trying to sell vegan products. [01:30] A consideration of whether unbiased opinions about diet are possible. [03:03] A new activity in the podcast where great comments get read out. [07:48] The role of reverse engineering and bracketing in Ben’s approach to productivity. [10:29] How to approach effective intellectual work without spending many hours on it. [14:54] Where the productivity fetish might have come from: corporations and government. [16:05] Ben’s tips on condensing time: meet your mentors rather than read their books. [17:00] The different mindfulness-related lessons Ashleigh learned at Ben’s muscle camp. [19:13] What most people don’t do: get past their egos and remember basic form in the gym. [21:27] How Ben applies the principle of getting past ego and mindfulness to his teaching. [24:03] Managing the balance between focus and working unconsciously. [26:47] Remembering that rather than moving weight, it is contracting muscle that’s important. [28:23] The way proper form can reduce the variety of exercises necessary in a workout. [30:04] Maximize effectiveness by varying the parameters within simple exercises. [31:15] The many kinds of stability and how to incorporate them for maximum gain. [34:15] What Ashley learned when she found out about how to do a proper hamstring curl. [36:47] How the lessons of good form in Ben’s camp were revolutionary for Ashley. [37:36] Why muscle and joint pain are not par for the course after a workout. [38:04] Ben’s hopes for a future where nutrition is geared to the body’s daily needs. [40:12] What makes Ben’s gym the best: active care. [43:12] This episode’s habit of the week: stop complaining, and practice gratitude. [44:01]

063: Secrets of Successful Full-Time Yoga Teachers with Ashley Zuberi Ashley Zuberi has been a full-time yoga teacher for three years and acknowledges it has been a struggle. While considering her own challenges, Ashley became curious about the struggles of her fellow teachers. Recognizing there are several variables that affect how successfully one can teach yoga full-time, Ashley created a set of questions that she could pose to other yoga teachers. Ashley's questionnaire was aimed at those who worked independently as a yoga teacher and earned 70% or more of their income from teaching yoga. Most of the respondents were female and living in North America though some answers came from China, Australia, and England. She wanted to get a sense from a group of teachers what it looks like to teach yoga full-time. Ashley's hope was to uncover patterns, tips, and tricks that could be shared across the yoga community on the whole The answers revealed much that surprised Ashley. For example, she found that 32% of the respondents are able to make a living by teaching alone, which was happily more than she expected. Ashley also discovered that the teachers worked an average 42 hours per week and that regardless of the hours spent working (between 20-80 hours per week,) most respondents felt they worked too much. Other revelations were around income, teacher burnout, mindset, (how you describe your job and market yourself, for example) and yoga community connection (or disconnection). Ashley began her yoga journey by following a class on DVD and later attended classes at her local gym based on the recommendation of a friend. This enhanced her life in on several levels including physically, socially, and spiritually. The first yoga teacher training she attended was a 200-hour Power Vinyasa training from Jason Bowman and Derise Diatta at CorePower Yoga Boulder in 2011. Since then has expanded her knowledge by taking a variety of trainings. She loves to weave philosophy into her teaching which includes group classes, private yoga sessions, workshops, and yoga teacher trainings. In addition, she provides yoga teacher mentorship. 5:45 How Shannon structures her Consultation Calls 8:50 Ashley's yoga journey 9:50 Ashley's yoga teacher project - 53 logistically challenging 11:25 The difference between the yoga industry and other industry in regard to “set paths” and a measure of growth and success 13:20 Interview process and how Ashley chose her interviewees 14:25 Ashley's key takeaways from the data collected 18:30 What yoga teachers found to be their biggest challenges 20:35 Their experience with yoga teacher burnout and anxiety around “never knowing enough” 22:30 How Ashley compiled her data 23:30 Mindset of yoga teacher influenced their answers- do you consider yourself a yoga teacher or small business owner 24:15 The reality of working for yourself 26:20 Successful yoga teachers and innovative marketing 28:20 What the interviews revealed about the marketing mindset, Ashley's personal experience with marketing and the importance of building relationships 30:45 What Ashley took from the data and applied to her yoga business- Ashley's decision to scale back from her online presence Smart Passive Income vs. Smart Active Income 34:20 Responses to the question “Do you feel supported?” 39:25 How the lack of support felt within the yoga community can be addressed 41:05 The struggle to commit to a personal practice and perhaps re-defining what that means to you 43:20 What Ashley wishes yoga teachers would know after doing these interviews 44:50 Balancing family and a yoga career and how the yoga community can help support this 48:40 How to connect with Ashley 51:30 Average yoga teacher income from respondents and how the mindset for making a living as a yoga teacher is a viable option for full-time work from teaching has evolved over time 55:15 Shannon's closing thoughts on the issues brought forward by Ashley's report such as creating a supportive community in your area Links Ashley's Website To Access the downloadable PDF “The State of Teaching Yoga Full time” click on “Download the Report” button on Ashley's homepage Email: ashley@ashleyjosephine.com Ashley on Facebook Ashley on Instagram Article: Calling All Full Time Teachers by Ashley Zuberi Article: The Evolution of Yoga Teaching by Ashley Zuberi Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity Yoga is a practice that asks us to look at ourselves and our lives so we can choose to live in alignment with our true values. Welcome to the thirteenth episode of The Making of SMILE & CO.! Listen to Dr. Ashley Joves' story as she talks about how much fun she's had this week with her marketing crew. This week's episode is informative and perfect for anyone thinking about starting their own dental practice. Tune in and listen carefully, because you won't want to miss this week's episode!Time-Stamped Show Notes00:30 Intro1:57 Ashley had a lot of fun this week, and Studio 8e8 has been awesome.7:00 Why she had to scramble to do the letters for her feature wall.9:41 Why Ashley only saw 6-7 patients this week.10:40 The grand opening is this Friday, and Dr. Anissa Holms is flying in to meet her for the first time.11:36 What Ashley's planning to do for her grand opening.13:18 How much should a dentist spend on a grand opening celebration?15:37 Ashley wants everything to be perfect for the big event.16:02 Ashley's front desk person is amazing and knows her stuff.16:52 Ashley gives a shout-out to her team and says they're the best team ever.17:20 Studio 88 was Ashley's favorite resource this week. What makes them so different?20:56 She admits that she still feels camera-shy.22:45 What she wishes she knew this week.23:16 Help a dentist with insomnia. What should she do to stop her mind from racing when she's trying to sleep?23:54 Michael suggests natural remedies like calcium and magnesium, valerian root, and Sleepy Time tea.27:30 Why the thought of the grand opening makes her sad.28:34 Ashley reveals that she received a letter from a prison inmate.32:40 How she deals with guys and potential stalkers who are now contacting her because of all the social media attention.34:32 Closing.3 Main Ideas1. Be Unique with Your WebsiteAshley loves Studio 88 marketing company because they're making her a fantastic website that stands out from the crowd. They have a unique vibe and great energy, Ashley says. She notes that most dentist websites look the same and that it's boring. When she found Studio 88, they were down to earth and fun to work with. Plus, they understand her vision and what her practice is all about.Be sure to make your online presence look different from the rest. A traditional dentistry website will probably look great, but will it catch your audience's eye, and is it memorable?2. Have Fun and Learn to RefuelAshley sounds relaxed this week and says she's in a better space now. She says she is realizing the things she can control and letting go of the things that she can't. But mostly, she is having fun and taking it all in.She says she got good advice from Studio 88 while conversing over dinner. They said that learning how to refuel was crucial in business. For her, refueling means shutting down for the evening to spend time with her family. It's a good idea to refuel each day so that you'll be motivated to work the following morning. If you don't refuel, it's possible that you'll be unproductive the following day, and you could even crash if you never replenish. Aim to refuel each evening with something or someone you love.3. Love who you work withAshley advises to love who you work with because it makes your life much easier. Ashley spent weeks searching for the right candidates for her team. She wanted people with the right attitude and was careful to avoid people with overly dominant personalities. Her time and effort paid off, and she loves the people she works with. It's good to have people that you enjoy being around because you might be spending the next twenty years with them. Have people that you can trust and that blend with your personality and brand.ResourcesStudio 8e8Ashley's website design and marketing crew.Find Out MoreThank you for listening to The Making of Smile & Co. podcast. Hello! Welcome to You Haven't Seen?! a podcast where we watch movies everyone has seen but us and then talk about them! For April we are watching science fiction and starting off by watching Sunshine, a movie Debbie has seen but Ashley hasn't. Join us as we ponder how we would do in space, Debbie asks some science questions, and Ashley does not have the answers. What Ashley does have is one hell of a conspiracy theory though, so watch out Chris Evans! We are concerned! Also everyone needs to watch the Movies With Mikey video Mikey Neumann did on Sunshine. And then watch the rest of them, cause they're great. This episode is a little longer than usual, but we think Kendra’s words are worth it. We giggled. We made fun of folding fitted sheets. And we so, so enjoyed her perspective on making time for creativity amidst the craziness of children, home renovations, and the changing seasons of life. She gets seriously real about not feeling guilty about taking time for yourself, and how being a mom is not always what fills her creatively. She’s exactly the kind of creative, regular person we had in mind when we started the Chasing Creative podcast, and we hope you will enjoy and learn from her words of wisdom on being your own creative self. P.S. from Abbie: Do you ever get a little tongue-tied when speaking to one of your internet crushes? I totally do. And Kendra is one of them. So… when I said at 1:45 that I’m not a wife or a mom… it was my mouth getting ahead of my brain. I’ve been married for nearly 10 YEARS and somehow declared that I wasn’t. Oops. Love you, Scott! I’m not a mom, though, so I was half correct. :) Here’s where to Find Kendra: Website: http://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/lazylazygenius Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelazygenius/ Podcast: http://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/podcasts/ Here’s where to find Ashley: Website: www.BrooksEditorial.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/brookseditorial Instagram: http://instagram.com/brookseditorial Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/brookseditorial Here’s where to find Abbigail: Website: www.InkwellsandImages.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/abbigailekriebs Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abbigailekriebs/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inkwellsandimages/ Mini Book Club: Kendra's recent fiction reads: All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr Wild - Cheryl Strayed Kendra's recent nonfiction reads: Ignore Everybody - Hugh McCloud Creativity books Kendra's excited about: Deep Work - Cal Newport Rework - Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson Presence - Amy Cuddy Kendra’s favorites of all-time (fiction): Till We Have Faces - CS Lewis Harry Potter (duh) The Wingfeather Saga - Andrew Peterson Jane Austen, Bronte sisters, etc. The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern Favorites of all-time (nonfiction): Anything by Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling Anything by Emily Freeman Thinkertoys - Michael Michalko… this is a good one to talk about because it gives ideas to engage your brain in unusual ways when you need a fresh take on your creativity. In this episode I am joined with Ashley Hunt, a London based personal trainer and Health Coach. I got to know Ashley when she was living here in Sydney through the health and wellness website Move Eat Heal which Ashley co-founded with a friend. Now Ashley is based in East London and while she still writes for her own blog she is also a personal trainer and wellness coach. We talk about keeping healthy when you move, celiac disease, aerial fitness (pole dancing in particular) and Ashley's personal approach to diet, exercise and lifestyle. Ashley specialises in helping clients build their confidence as well as creating quick and effective workouts that can be done anywhere.
