How to Decorate

We loved our first episode with Designer Ashley Whittaker so much that we are thrilled to have her back this week to talk about her new book, The Well-Love House: Creating Homes with Color, Comfort, and Drama. Ashley talks about her love of natural and durable materials and how we can have an indestructible yet elegant home. She shares tips on adding some beautiful pieces to keep things fresh and happy, how to tell if your furniture is talking to each other and what's going to make a room feel inviting vs. off-limits. Ashley also shares some stories behind the photos in her beautiful book and a few client success stories that we can learn from in undertaking our own design adventures. What You'll Hear on This Episode: Ashley's goal of “set it and forget it” when it comes to designing well-loved homes. The ingredients of a comfortable family room and how to still add elegance and beauty. Examples of natural fabric and textures that can take some wear and tear but still hold up beautifully. How to know when you have the right furniture plan. Why Ashley recommends starting the design process with the walls. If your walls aren't finished, your house does not feel finished. A few of the homes featured in Ashley's book include a Connecticut estate, a chic Manhattan home and a beach home, along with a fun special story about each client. How to make rooms not feel so seasonal so they can flow from season to season. When it comes to styles like midcentury, a little goes a long way. Ashley's imaginative use of lampshades, and how we can use lamps and lighting to create beauty in our well-loved home. Decorating Dilemma We admit this is a little bit of a challenge to wallpaper a room like this. If you were to paper, it may be more than just this one room and you will have to figure out where your wallpaper ends. Also, there's not a ton of walls in this room so you may not get the biggest bang for your buck. How can you get an even bigger and better wow factor? Well, maybe you could paper the ceiling or even add textured grasscloth. Painting the ceiling a sky blue may be able to work in a beautiful reflective way. As for the wall color, I would get a more creamy or modern white. That would be a great contrast with the sky blue. Thank you for writing, and good luck! In today’s world, trying to get married has become... a hot mess. So, to all the COVID brides to have been, grooms and wedding professionals: you’re not alone. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. To get married or not to get married? That is the question. Due to COVID-19, weddings have been postponed and even called off all across the globe. Still many couples have taken the extra time as an opportunity to reflect on what’s most important for them. In this episode of Bride To Have Been, Emily sits down with Ashley Schroeder who made the call to cancel her large wedding plans early in the pandemic even though the date was set for June 2021. Life is pretty simple now, and 2020 has helped Ashley and her partner identify what they treasure the most. Listen to this episode and contemplate what is truly meaningful to you and your significant other! Jump straight into: (00:43) - The love story of Ashley & Ryan (aka Melvin) -  “We met and we became friends, and we dated very briefly, as much as you can at UC Santa Barbara as freshmen.” (08:47) - The Perfect New York Proposal - “He actually wrote his proposal, he said it, but he had it written in a card, which I loved, so I could read it again.” (13:23) - Why Ashley cancelled her 2021 wedding and got married in the middle of a pandemic instead - “We realized what was more important to us was getting married soon, and so we redefined 2020 by choosing to elope and get married.” (19:04) - Why an elopement could be the best option for many brides - “It was really fun to plan, and really low stress! I recommend that to anyone who is worried about having to plan a wedding to accommodate other people.” (26:19) - Ashley’s advice for couples that are trying to get married during these times, and the thing she has valued the most throughout 2020 - “If you choose to elope, then it might not be weighted in the same way as a traditional wedding, and that's okay. That's where you have to ask yourself: Am I okay with this?” Thanks for listening! Hey you wild women! Joining me on today's episode is Ashley Hogrebe, Founder and Systems Strategist of Do the Damn Thing. She helps feminist creative business owners spend more time in their zone of genius and going after their goals, and less time struggling with tech. Originally from Washington State and now based in Los Angeles, Ashley has had a wild career path. She has been touring manager for a rock band, Director of Logistics and Operations for a summer camp for adults, and most recently the Operations Manager of a multi-million-dollar online course business. While her career path has been varied, they all have one thing in common: creating systems and processes in the midst of chaos. When she started her own business, Ashley thought implementing the systems and processes would be easy. She was wrong. Suffering from analysis paralysis, Ashley realized she needed to act as the visionary and the operator of her business. By implementing and streamlining the little things, she was able to successfully launch Do the Damn Thing in 2020. In this episode, you will learn about: Why Ashley's favourite quote is “done is better than perfect” How Ashley overcame her biggest pain point of believing she was not able to make her business a full-time job Why no investment is a bad investment, even if you don't get what you want from it How knowing your personality type can help you make better business decisions Overcoming imposter syndrome and learning to charge for your worth How the 'Me Too' movement led to the creation of Do the Damn Thing What's the difference between a CEO and a COO? How can you be both as a team of one? Why the COO side of things is often shelved by creatives How Ashley helps teams of one scale up their business with strong SOPs How personality tests can help you determine what systems will work for you Eliminating the shame in your systems Overcoming the belief that you don't have the personality type to run a successful and organized business How to make systems work for you Knowing when a system isn't working so that you can switch it up Must-have tools for online business owners Operations tips to get more organized in your business Resources: Website: Do The Damn Thing Instagram: dothedamnthing_ Program: How to Be your Own COO Public Shout Outs: Hello 7 Podcast: When You Think You've Tried Everything Dubsado  1Password LastPass Calendly Acuity AirTable Loom Diagrams.net What it means to be a WILD woman: “The opposite of wild is tamed, and we live in a society where patriarchy and white supremacy do everything in their power to tame, AKA oppress, marginalized people. Especially black women and people of color. When the world isn't built for marginalized genders to be wild, it can be liberating to reclaim that word. To show it fully and use it as fuel.” -Ashley Hogrebe ______________________________________________________________________ Renée Warren is an award-winning entrepreneur, a 7-figure business starter, and the founder of We Wild Women, a business dedicated to helping women launch their dream business. She started her business out of her parent’s garage and slowly but surely transitioned into trying out for Project Runway where she not only dominated the entire season but also became the first plus-size designer and model to win! Since then, she has gone on to be the face of JCPenney’s plus-size clothing line and is continuing to be an advocate for the plus-size community through spreading self-love and self-care.   We had such an amazing conversation with Ashley today. Tears were even shed later on! She was incredibly vulnerable in opening up to us and sharing her story and we are so, so grateful for that — and we know you will be too, once you tune in to hear!   She shares lessons in self-work, self-care and healing, self-discovery, and how she’s learned to march to the beat of her own drum and become the best version of herself. We also talk self-love and mental health, redefining beauty standards, moving away from judgment and towards acceptance of ourselves and others, how we can begin to take back our power, breaking through barriers, knowing when to let go of things that are no longer serving you, sex as a form of self-care, and the importance of choosing yourself first. This is a jam-packed, insightful episode and we can’t wait for you to hear everything that Ashley has to share.   IGNTD Specials: IGNTD Live Online Groups (Free for 14 Days) IGNTD Subscription ($43 per month & 30 days of Live Groups included) IGNTD “Once an Addict” Campaign   Topics Discussed: [:35] Why Sophie started Philosophie Superfoods. When you’re in pain and are lacking energy, it is hard to consider that the issue may lie within your body. Here to discuss his health journey is Ashley Thompson who had multiple genetic pre-dispositions toward having a hard health road. He shares what his life was like before making some huge health changes, how you can work to change your mindset, and what life looks like today. Ashley’s life changed when he got back the results of a genetic screen he’d opted into. He found that his body was genetically unable to process stress hormones efficiently while also being inefficient at creating energy. Not only could he not get too worked up about things, he also had trouble building up his energy stores. Once he learned about these issues he started researching how he could boost his energy levels. This led him on a long health journey that has resulted in him completely changing his eating and sleeping habits. Fast-forward to now and he’s dealing with the results of Lyme disease and mold toxicity.  His journey is not over but the habits and mindset work he has built over the years has given him sure footing to get through this next hurdle. He shares what his daily sleep routine looks like now and how his diet has affected more than just his weight and sleep.  Everything you put in your body has a purpose. Listen in as both Ashley and I share how eating clean and finding the right diet for our bodies has completely changed our lives.  In This Episode: [00:02:35] Welcome Ashley Thompson an entrepreneur who has experienced several health challenges that he has overcome.  [00:05:31] Learn more about Ashley’s background.  [00:08:44] The harder you work the luckier you get. Learn how Ashley found out about the gene mutation that affects his health. [00:10:27] Ashley doesn’t break down the stress hormone well and his body isn’t as efficient at creating and recycling energy. [00:12:11] How staying up late because he couldn’t sleep and then waking up late and not getting his morning sun worked against his genetic deficiencies. [00:14:38] Learn how Ashley coped with his insomnia over the years.  [00:17:32] He’s currently dealing with a mold issue, so he needs to find a more natural environment to live in. [00:20:26] What advice does Ashley give those that live in the colder, gloomier areas of the world to get additional sunlight? [00:22:10] Ashley shares how he managed his insomnia over the years. [00:24:58] Why he started incorporating supplements to boost the results of his other efforts in bringing down is inflammation. [00:26:29] How removing bread, sugar, and alcohol works best for Talor. Even when he eats a hamburger.  [00:29:06] Ashley chats about the societal pressures we feel to continue to consume things that are bad for us. [00:31:27] The more Talor spends on high-quality food, the more money he makes and why you should pay attention to what you purchase. [00:33:30] How did Talor approach dealing with his inflammation? [00:35:29] He first started looking for a solution outside of his person. [00:37:13] Learn more about Healing Back Pain by Dr. John Sarno and how it affected Talor’s healing. [00:39:49] This is when he started looking internally for solutions to his pain to include fixing his diet, practicing meditation and gratitude, and breathwork.  [00:41:23] Why Dr. Sarno told Talor to go back to full activity. [00:42:47] Ashley also spends time to sit and think rather than feeling guilty for not simply taking action. [00:45:28] Get out of your head and do big picture thinking to set yourself up for success. [00:47:31] Despite the fact that Talor spends the first 5 hours of his day not working, he continues to be successful. Learn why. [00:49:04] Ashely shares his Keto story and why he did it for too long. [00:51:10] With all the bio-individualization, you have to try different things to see how they work for you. [00:52:06] Hear Ashley’s tips for handling sleeping issues.  [00:55:11] Why his diet makes a huge difference in his sleep cycle. [00:57:41] Stop using your phone and laptop in the evenings. By 35 years of age, Ashley Avinashi found herself suffering from chronic adrenal fatigue, high levels of anxiety and a sense of having lost herself in the world. The journey into parenthood had her question everything she had ever believed about life. She had spent nearly two decades post-graduation following her dreams, beginning with a corporate role in a fast track management program to becoming one of the top sales and investment experts in the busiest market in North America. Despite a seemingly perfect life on the outside, her inside world was crumbling. There came a time where she learned how separated she had become from her own intrinsic worth and intuition, working hard for the external and neglecting what truly mattered for her. Over the years, as she invested in herself honestly and leaned into her own truth, her entire life began to turn. The clarity emerged as she returned to her roots, and reconnected deeply to her true self. She began to act in ways that showed that she loved and honoured herself, and the joy followed. Patterns of anxiety, control and proving her worth were left behind. She has since founded an organization called Raising Humanity, which offers a revolutionary path by which we can raise ourselves and our children. The hope is that the magic, or light, is preserved in us from birth, and future generations would have an opportunity to not go some many of their lives unlived. When we are heard and seen as we are, we can move past the old patterns that keep us from experiencing life fully. Her most recent book, Ignite Your Parenting: Real life, heartfelt stories to help parents find balance and joy in raising happy children, can be found on Amazon. In this episode we dive into: 1. The story behind “Raising Humanity”, and why Ashley considers it a “Global Village.'' 2. The importance of parents feeling and realizing that they are enough. 3. How Ashley shifted out of “the hustle” by listening to the signs that the universe was giving her. 4. How a lack of fulfillment despite a seemingly perfect life was the red flag that Ashley needed to slow down. 5. How we can form and cultivate the habit of listening to our bodies and the importance of uncovering the recipe we need for rest and recovery. 6. The greatest lessons our children can teach us about true happiness. 7. The keys to setting ourselves up to be successful parents. 8. Why Ashley believes our strength is actually found in our vulnerability. 9. The cost of suppressing our emotions in our early years and why we end up paying for it down the road. 10. Eliminating the “quick fix” scenarios and putting the actual work in to better our lives. www.brenttieri.com www.raisinghumanity.com

Today Ashley and I chatted all about using customer feedback in product design, but this episode is so relevant to people in the service-based industry as well. Ashley and I actually met in person at a VIP Intensive back in February of 2017, so I was so excited to bring her on the show to talk about how she grew her company and how she uses customer feedback to help her design better products while still maintaining the vision she has for her business. Ashley Staum is owner of She Plans, a little planner company that sells planners, notebooks and printable planners. She is a self-taught designer with a degree in Marketing and an MBA from Virginia Tech. Her products are created with simplicity in mind, in both design and functionality, to allow you to create the space to let life happen - because life doesn't happen on the page. As the daughter of a Navy man, Ashley lived in six homes as a child and is on her sixth home since getting married in 2004. She currently lives just north of Houston, Texas along with her husband and four young girls.  Topics Discussed: How Ashley got started designing planners for herself and turned it into a business Why she still creates printables along with her line of bound planners Her transition from Etsy to having her own brand Why Ashley loves getting customer feedback and how it’s improved her business The four ways she receives feedback and how she uses it to make changes in her business How Ashley avoids the temptation to stray for her signature style Why she thinks of her customers as part of her business Why sometimes less is more in product design Why she doesn’t feel like other planner companies are competition How starting small and not looking at the competition is beneficial Her upcoming Fall launch Connect with Ashley: Website Etsy Instagram

Today on the Why Arizona Podcast, your Host Ashley Law is sitting down with her good friend Caitlin Smith of Caitlin Curiosity.  Caitlin began her journey into wellness as an organic vegetable farmer in 2011 where her curiosity for using plants as medicine developed. From there her path lead her into a holistic nutrition program at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts and eventually evolved into founding her own wellness studio in Phoenix called Exhale Wellness. Combining her love for holistic nutrition and strength training there, she became deeply passionate about helping women heal their old narratives around their bodies and find empowerment and self-love buried beneath by connecting to themselves again. Caitlin’s advising style revolves around the belief that you have the power to deeply love yourself through your own intuition. Her programs focus on guiding you on how to tune in and connect with your own mind and body — creating wellness and self worth on your terms — and working with plant-based practices to nourish and heal. I don’t even know where to begin telling you about today’s guest, Ashley Stahl. I met Ashley in my mastermind group, but it was recently that I really sat down to hear her story, and wow! Prepare yourself to be in awe of her mind-blowing journey so far.   While now a career coach and writer with successful business, her career journey began early on at age 23 in Washington D.C. at the Pentagon managing a high-level counter-terrorism program. She excelled in the position and knew that it looked good on paper, but she knew it wasn’t the right fit when she wound up with a bag over her head in a routine drill. Ashley knew she could continue on, but she also knew that she wasn’t staying true to who she was.   Ashley left the Pentagon and high-tailed it back to L.A. where she grew up, found another job in intelligence in the private sector, but also started a side hustle as a career coach. That side hustle is now a thriving business, and as you’ll hear in this episode, it was full of highs and lows (millionaire to broke to millionaire).   Be sure to listen in as she walks us through her challenging moments and how she’s still working on releasing limiting beliefs around money, success and relationships. Ashely offers a broad spectrum of empowering advice and I hope it inspires you to do more as well. --      Question Highlights: What’s one thing you’re challenged by? What’s one of your superpowers? Who is someone who’s changed your life? What is one of your favorite accomplishments? Can you tell us about your counter-terrorist job with the Pentagon at only 23 years old? How did you get your job at the Pentagon? How did you make and lose $5 million? When did your success go the wrong direction? What’s the verdict? Have your key people stayed in your life despite your success ups and downs? How has your view of money changed? Do you have a favorite moment of giving?   In This Episode We Talk about: Ashley’s education path How Ashley wound up working in Washington D.C. at the Pentagon The magic of human connection Ashley’s “You Turn” moment Ashley’s career path from the Pentagon to career coach Navigating through a loss and struggle money mindset Automated webinars Why Ashley had the belief that success and fear always occurred together How attorneys and Ashley sabotaged her success False urgency The work Ashley is doing to release the belief that people are going to screw her over The role generosity has played in Ashley’s life And so much more… --   Ashley’s Thoughts…   “Never rob someone of their rock bottom.”   “If you’re a wobbly coach, you’re going to get a wobbly customer.”   “I became an entrepreneur because I’m creative, not to fix things.”   “Quitting can be for winners. There is a glory in quitting.”   “The trauma wasn’t in losing my money – that was a gift.”   “It’s priceless to be able to go out in the world and be yourself.”   “Worthiness is our birthright.”   -- Ashley Stahl is an angel investor, writer and career coach who empowers job seekers around the world in finding their purpose and landing more job offers. At age 23, Stahl managed a high-level program for the Pentagon, for which she was named a “Top 99 Foreign Policy Leader Under 33” by Diplomatic Courier Magazine and Young Professionals in Foreign Policy. Next, she was named Power 30 Under 30 leader by Apex Society for her work running the Global Threat Intelligence Team at a global political risk consultancy. While preparing senior officials for the front lines of the war on terror, Ashley launched her leadership firm, Ashley International Inc., which offers private coaching and unparalleled online programs to empower Millennials to find their purpose, land more job offers and increase their income. She’s worked with thousands of job seekers in 25 countries via her online program, the Limitless Career Lab. Ashley Stahl is a columnist for Forbes on the topic of Gen Y, careers and leadership, and also blogs for her own career blog at www.ashleyinternational.com. Her work has been featured on FOX News, the Wall Street Journal, SELF Magazine, the Washington Post, TEDx, Newsweek and more. Ashley earned her Master’s degree in international relations from King’s College London, and another Master’s in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica. She’s not a felon and she’s never been convicted, instead the brilliant Dr Ashley Hampton spent time helping inmates create a new life for themselves. It’s a fascinating story... As a psychologist, Ashley loves to connect through people through their stories - and as she shares some of her own, she reveals that we’re not all that different. In fact, very often it’s our choices that separate us and not our backgrounds or life experiences. Challenge that us v them mindset, and it’s possible to feel a connection with virtually anyone - even if your lives seem like worlds apart. “That’s how you get a goal. Ashley Cantley, Feng Shui expert, manifester, mama bear Feng Shui for Health: Ashley Cantley was drawn to this ancient Chinese practice when faced with healing from a toxic relationship. Similarly, I only started putting attention on my living space when I was sick and doing some healing of my own.  Most people who have a current #lifegoal of "heal from illness" are in bed, and, in that case, shouldn't the bedroom feel like a sanctuary?  I believe that my living space is a reflection of how I am in the world, and I committed to making my whole home a giant vision board: Everything in it should make me feel good! That being said, I knew very little about the actual art and science of Feng Shui, so I was pretty pumped to get Ashley on and talk about practical suggestions to use Feng Shui for health and healing. How is Feng Shui an extension of holistic health? And how does it enhance other self-care practices? How can we make small changes in our home to enhance our health? Listen in here! Find Ashley for more Feng Shui tips on IG @fengshuiash and at her blog and website here. Weekly Challenges: This one can be a real game-changer! You don’t even have to put a CC in! If you asked me to name the single biggest workplace time-waster, I don’t even have to think about it: The answer is email. In fact, a recent study found that almost 50% of the time that entrepreneur spend tending to their inboxes is spent on emails that should have never been sent to them or that didn’t need an answer. I’ve tried to manage the excess so many times, manually deleting thousands of emails, making folders, and unsubscribing to list but it always goes out of control again. When I got sick, I learned that I needed to have an organized, uncluttered life. I need to utilize every tool available to me to lessen my daily stress. However, Being a busy entrpeuner, it’s hard to keep a stress free email inbox. It can be overwhelming, in fact it gave me anxiety just to open my email. I desperately wanted a clear screen so I could streamline, focus on what was important and deal with what wasn’t important later. SaneBox gave me exactly that. I no longer waste my precious time and energy deleting unnecessary emails or being overwhelmed by a packed screen. Not to mention that the less I have distracting me, the more productive I am. When I have time, I can open the folders that SaneBox effectively manages for me and read the news and unimportant emails and read newsletters I’m interested in. I don’t miss anything important or that I enjoy! I can’t recommend this enough, my friends.

Ashley wanted to do more with her life, and to promote a positive and powerful presence for the people around her. Luckily for Indigo’s students and community, she found a new calling in yoga. Yoga teaches her to find the inspiration in every challenge and to accept the simultaneous joys of effort and ease. Ashley believes that whatever she does she wants to do it well, no matter if it’s in law school or teaching others valuable life lessons through yoga. She has learned that it’s not about being the best, but doing your best. In today’s episode, Ashley shares her journey of transition when she pivoted from a career as an attorney to getting qualified as a yoga teacher. Ashley dives into the importance of having a great support system to help you make these small pivots toward finding your true path in life.    Key Points From This Episode How to identify yourself and uncover who you are Understanding why you are a “work in progress” that is constantly evolving Learning to be content with where you are and what you are doing. Be Unique with Your WebsiteAshley loves Studio 88 marketing company because they're making her a fantastic website that stands out from the crowd. They have a unique vibe and great energy, Ashley says. She notes that most dentist websites look the same and that it's boring. When she found Studio 88, they were down to earth and fun to work with. Plus, they understand her vision and what her practice is all about.Be sure to make your online presence look different from the rest. A traditional dentistry website will probably look great, but will it catch your audience's eye, and is it memorable?2. Have Fun and Learn to RefuelAshley sounds relaxed this week and says she's in a better space now. She says she is realizing the things she can control and letting go of the things that she can't. But mostly, she is having fun and taking it all in.She says she got good advice from Studio 88 while conversing over dinner. They said that learning how to refuel was crucial in business. For her, refueling means shutting down for the evening to spend time with her family. It's a good idea to refuel each day so that you'll be motivated to work the following morning. If you don't refuel, it's possible that you'll be unproductive the following day, and you could even crash if you never replenish. Aim to refuel each evening with something or someone you love.3. Love who you work withAshley advises to love who you work with because it makes your life much easier. Ashley spent weeks searching for the right candidates for her team. She wanted people with the right attitude and was careful to avoid people with overly dominant personalities. Her time and effort paid off, and she loves the people she works with. It's good to have people that you enjoy being around because you might be spending the next twenty years with them. Have Integrators in Your BusinessAshley talks about her personality and how she's always thinking about the next big thing with her business and marketing. But running daily operations and following protocols are a pain point for Ashley. Most entrepreneurs are visionary people, and that makes it difficult to do day-to-day business and get things done. If you are a visionary person, aim to hire integrators who will be excellent at taking care of daily tasks.2. Just Say NoMichael and Ashley discuss how hard it is to say no. This week, Ashley noticed that she had a hard time saying no to salespeople that wanted to take up her time. She later realized that by entertaining the salesperson and not telling him to come back later, she was taking time away from her family.Permitting others to steal your time may mean disappointing the people you care about, or not being able to do what you want to do in life. It's your day and no one else's, so it's up to you to take back your time by just saying no.3. Ride the WavesAshley admits she was down and stressed out last week, but many people Facebooked her and told her to keep her head up.She explains, When I say ride the waves', there's definitely going to be highs and lows, and you just have to keep your head up and look at the horizon. Because it does get better. She is better this week and has reminded herself that she's providing an excellent service and that the practice has gotten great reviews on Google.Find Out MoreThank you for listening to The Making of Smile & Co. podcast. Topics Discussed: How Ashley got started designing planners for herself and turned it into a business Why she still creates printables along with her line of bound planners Her transition from Etsy to having her own brand Why Ashley loves getting customer feedback and how it’s improved her business The four ways she receives feedback and how she uses it to make changes in her business How Ashley avoids the temptation to stray for her signature style Why she thinks of her customers as part of her business Why sometimes less is more in product design Why she doesn’t feel like other planner companies are competition How starting small and not looking at the competition is beneficial Her upcoming Fall launch Connect with Ashley Website Etsy Instagram
