There is nothing better in baseball than a winner-take-all playoff game. And last night at Truist Park in Atlanta, the home Braves' fans were treated to an unbelievable performance. They defeated their NL East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2 and will move on to play the Dodgers in the Divisional round. The Braves were sparked by Atlanta-native “Money” Michael Harris, who blasted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning off of Aaron Nola. Nola got the start over the Phillies' ace Zack Wheeler, who came in the game after Nola gave up 3 runs in 1.2 IP. The Braves countered Nola with little-used Ray Kerr. Kerr, 32, only had 9 regular-season appearances in 2026, and before that hadn't pitched since 2024 (Tommy John surgery). Kerr held it down for the Braves. He went 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 Ks. Kerr set the tone on the mound for the Braves bullpen. Grant Holmes, Robert Suarez, Didier Fuentes, Dylan Dodd, and ultimately Braves' ace Chris Sale closed out the game. The Phillies never got started and ended a rollercoaster season that I feel may close the window for Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Zack Wheeler to win it all in the city of brotherly love. In addition to Harris, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson hit homers for the Braves. Marico Durbon flashed his gold-glove leather — the Braves' defense was outstanding. It was do-or-die, and the Braves move on.Looking ahead to the Divisional Rounds, which start Saturday, the Braves will face the Dodgers, the White Sox will face the Guardians, the Padres will face the Brewers, and the Yankees will face the Rays. Legend of the Guardians was a movie with maybe one of the longest titles of all time. I'm not even going to write it out in this description because it would make it too long; SEO be damned. Planned to watch this movie back when Sam Neil passed away, which now feels like forever ago. Regardless this movie is one of the first movies where Zach Snyder we feel wanted to show he had range. He wanted to say, "I don't just make movies about shirtless men who kick people into holes and super hero movies! I can make movies for kids too."Well he did. And the movie is honestly not that bad. It's maybe a little convoluted at times, but the message is clear: Being a Nazi is bad. In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we return to Susan Pedersen's *The Guardians* – the definitive history of the mandate system – to examine one of its darkest chapters: the French bombing of Damascus in October 1925.The French had acquired Syria under the Sykes-Picot Agreement, though the British never really accepted their claim to it. Lawrence of Arabia had raced to Damascus in 1918 to deliver it to the Arabs – and by extension to the British – in defiance of the agreement. But the French got their mandate, and they ran it with a combination of arrogance, ignorance, and violence.The revolt that erupted in 1925 was not, as the French insisted, the work of brigands and agitators. It was the product of accumulated grievances: the division of Syria into four statelets, the creation of Greater Lebanon, the subordination of Syrian officials to French approval, the demotion of Ottoman-trained officers, and an economic policy that pegged the Syrian pound to the unstable franc. The Druze leader Sultan al-Atrash – a Syrian nationalist who had served in the Ottoman army and joined the Arab Revolt – was not a local warlord, as the French imagined, but a man with a vision of complete independence and free elections.The French response was brutal. Villages were burned. Circassian, Kurdish and Armenian irregulars were unleashed to loot and terrorise. Corpses were paraded through the streets of Damascus and strung up in Marjeh Square. And then, on 18 October 1925, French tanks rolled through the narrow streets and the bombardment began – two days of shelling and aerial bombing of an undefended city.The international outcry was immediate. The *Times* of London, hardly a radical publication, ran reports that turned colonial assumptions on their heads. Readers who knew nothing of Syrian villages could place them in the category of the primitive – but every biblically literate child had heard of Damascus.
