What Makes Us Stronger
Closing the Digital Gender Gap

What Makes Us Stronger

Women in sub–Saharan Africa face the largest digital gender gap in the world. They're 37 percent less likely than men to use the mobile internet, despite extensive mobile coverage across the continent. But when women access digital financial tools, the evidence shows they take control of much more than just their finances. In this episode, Elizabeth in Nigeria tells us how getting to grips with technology has changed her life in unexpected ways. Nisha also talks to Nabila Aguele, former special adviser to Nigeria's Minister of Finance and new Women for Women International Board Director about why it's so important for communities to close the digital gender gap. In this episode, Nisha finds out how each of the women made a dangerous journey and learns about some of the surprising things that gave them courage along the way.    Lena's Translation by Olena Behnke   Sherin's Translation by Wissam Fakih   For more information about us, visit Womenforwomen.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lynde Griggs: Co-Founder of Belle & Sparrows, a Non-Profit forwomen, by women.- In Episode #82, Lynde Griggs shares with us how her life in ministry and missions ledher to co-found Belle & Sparrows. At the age of 42, while serving on the churchstaff, Lynde felt the pull on her heart to propose an all women's mission trip for herwomen's ministry group. Within two to three months, she, with the support of herpastor and church, was able to assemble the first ever all female team of 24 womenthat spent one week serving impoverished women in Guatemala.- Lynde found herself as an empty nester having what she refers to as a crisis of faith. She knew that she was called to serve God's people outside of the church, butquestioned why he would use someone like her to share the message. Although shefelt fearful and uncertain, she knew that God's call for her life was greater than herself doubt.• She shares her personal steps for overcoming doubt and having Faith Over Fear1. Start with Prayer & Discernment2. Share your calling with trusted people in your circle and ask for prayers3. Take a Step of FaithBy stepping out in faith, Lynde along with her co-founder Tiffany Savage were able tocreate Belle & Sparrows to be able to serve women both locally and globally. Bypartnering with local organizations, volunteers are able to serve women transitioningfrom homelessness as well as sexually exploited and trafficked survivors.Internationally, Belle & Sparrows provides the opportunity to teach women inGuatemala the necessary skills for gainful employment, and In Haiti, serve foster momsthat are caring for disabled and orphaned children. Nationally, volunteers can serveNavajo women in New Mexico, women in transitional living in Oregon, and expectingmothers at the pregnancy center in Waco, TX.The Stella project is the newest endeavor for Belle & Sparrows. This will be atransitional living home, and social enterprise where women will be able to make andsell honey based products from their very own beehive.1Wednesday, April 22, 2020While this episode was recorded before we found ourselves in this current situation, Ihave found Lynde's words to be so relevant to this preset time.“Our lives are in seasons. Just because one season is coming to a close, doesn'tmean that your life is coming to a close.”She told our listeners to “Put legs on what you are learning in your bible study and stepout in faith.” She shared that we can't make disciples if we're not willing to go. So, weshould all take baby steps, and step by step follow the journey God has planned for us.Visit www.bellandsparrows.org to learn more about how you can support theorganization or be involved with a mission trip. In this second part of our conversation, Erika and I talk about how highly educated, powerful and intelligent women can get trapped in a life cycle and crash into the ground. Also, how we can regain our power by reaching out to others and get the support from other women. This conversation is bit uncomfortable. We talk about domestic violence which is more common than you think or know. We talk about the importance of maintaining our own financial identity no matter the situation we're in.  We talk about how simply and rich life can be when we know how to create happiness from within.Fun facts: Can you tell the difference between an airline captain and their co-pilot/First Officer by looking at their uniforms? If you see a 4-stripes uniform, they are a captain. If you see a 3 stripes uniform, they are a First Officer. You can find Erika Armstrong at:Website: https://achickinthecockpit.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/achickinthecockpitb727/ About 10X Vision:Host: Mina Fung, Founder of Pull Impact, Co-founder of wifaglobalMusic credit: Adventures by A HimitsuFor tips and lessons learned throughout the podcast, head over to https://www.pullimpact.com/podcast and subscribe to my monthly summary list exclusively delivered to your email box once a month.

In episode 115, Kestrel welcomes Tomide Awe, the founder of Olori, to the show. A handbag line that incorporates traditional African textiles into modern designs, Olori was built with an intention to help women become actively involved in solving women-interest issues, especially with regard to education.  "It's not about just donating money - we are not a charity organization, this is not a charitable affair for us. We are on a mission to build this network of future empowered women, and we wanted to ensure that the girls feel the full effect of every dollar that we spend."  -Tomide Awe, Founder of Olori   In this episode, Tomide shares more about her journey, and how growing up in Nigeria helped her realize the impact an education can have on women's lives. According to UNESCO, a girl in Nigeria has a 73% chance of not going to school. For Tomide, her mom helped to ensure she was able to get an education, and now she has multiple degrees. She wants to pay that forward to help give other young girls the opportunity to learn, grow and build their own future. With each Olori bag purchased, a girl receives one month of education, in coordination with Olori's giving partner Bridge International Academies. One powerful element of Tomide's company is she's not just a charity and/or a business with a giving model. Instead, she has built a supply chain that supports women throughout the backstory of her products as well. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: Wharton, university where Tomide studied and received her Master's degree "Nigeria is a country where a girl has a 73% chance of not going to school at all, according to UNESCO" "About 9.5 million girls will never step foot in a school, compared to about 5 million boys [in Africa]." "UNICEF says that mothers that have had some education are more than twice as likely to send their own children to school." Bridge International Academies, Olori's nonprofit giving partner Olori actually means "queen" in Tomide's language - the Yuruba language of Nigeria Aso-oke: textiles used to make Olori's bags "We strongly believe that when women support women, incredible things happen."
