Over three thousand years ago, yogis knew what scientists are discovering today: The mind has the power to destroy us or to propel us to greater peace, vitality, and freedom. Yet yoga's profound teachings on the mind and consciousness are often overlooked in contemporary practices, which tend to focus primarily on physical postures and breathwork. Today, my guest, Reema Dutta, will share these timeless teachings with us, emphasizing the practices and principles we can adopt to enhance our lives. Reema Datta is the founder of the Yogi's Way, a holistic method that integrates movement, breathing, and consciousness practices with a focus on emotional well-being. She is certified to teach Ashtanga yoga and Tibetan heart yoga and is an Ayurvedic therapist. Since 2002, she has taught yoga training and retreats in over twenty countries across five continents. Her students include Sting, Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, Zainab Salbi, Sujatha Baliga, and thousands of other practitioners globally. In this interview, Reema offers lessons and practices rooted in yogic wisdom, cutting-edge science, and the realities of modern life. These can empower us to break free from our minds' destructive tendencies and experience lasting peace.
“I've been particularly passionate about working with women in those communities to teach them about new techniques so they can understand how to run their farm more effectively, but also understand their rights as women in those communities so they have a stronger voice…. And because they were called an ‘ambassador,' their status in the village rose.” Alison Ward on Electric Ladies Podcast Have you ever wondered where your shirt really comes from, or where the cotton in your jeans was grown? While the tag might tell you where they were made, it won't tell you where the cotton came from. And that matters. CottonConnect is training female cotton farmers in eco-friendly, climate-resilient farming practices – and tracking it. Listen to Alison aWard, CEO of CottonConnect on Electric Ladies Podcast with Joan Michelson and learn about the significant yet under recognized role of women in cotton farming. Find other women that will be prepared to give back to help careers and connect. We have a Women in CottonConnect group where we are really looking at how we can advance women in our organization. “Not everything has to be an enormous career step. When I joined CottonConnect, it was a relatively small organization that has since grown into a much larger one. But it was something I was passionate about, and I've been fortunate to have a great team and great advisors around me.” Alison Ward on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. Wellness expert and author Heather Grzych speaks with Reema Datta — yogini, singer, and author of The Yogi's Way: Transform Your Mind, Health, and Reality. Reema shares how her early exposure to yoga and Ayurveda from her Indian family shaped her path, from working at the United Nations to becoming a globally respected teacher of ancient yogic wisdom. They discuss the role of the heart in cultivating peace and equanimity, and how practices like non-grasping and service lead to greater freedom and fulfillment. Reema also opens up about her personal journey, including the challenges of life, and why yoga is not just for the good times — but a vital preparation for the tough ones. “1% for the planet is really set up as a way to sort of break it down, and create a pathway to action that kind of gets us through the overwhelm. So, the way it works is that we have businesses who are our members, and they're actually supporting environmental partners at the level of 1% of revenues….You invest in the things that matter and the planet matters. …(The point is to) drive impact at scale. And so, in terms of that scale, last year we certified US$100million of support going from these companies to environmental partners….When a company joins, they pay a dues fee to us, but then the rest of their 1%, they will give directly to environmental partners….And then at the end of each year, we certify that giving.” Kate Williams on Electric Ladies Podcast It's a time of year when people are thinking about making donations. So we want to talk about what nonprofits can really do, especially in partnership with the private sector and the public sector. It's about coming together, leveraging each other's strengths and networks to have a much larger impact. We sure need to have a much larger impact right now. So, how do we scale donations? Listen to Kate Williams, CEO of 1% For The Planet on how they help companies of all sizes and shapes leverage their donations strategically for their goals in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: How 1% For The Planet works – and why they certify their members' donations. How their Planet Impact Fund works – and the four areas they focus on. Stories of donations that made a big difference, and creative ways they did it Trends they have seen I the corporate donations over the past 10 years. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “A couple things. One is, step forward and step up before you think you might be ready.… Becoming a CEO or C-suite can be one way that you progress, but you can also just become really deeply knowledgeable in a particular area.… Sometimes as women and just as humans, we can maybe hold ourselves back. So, I would say like, step up before you're ready.…(S)upport appears when once I've taken the step….The other thing is stay open to serendipity…We may forget that serendipity is sometimes how the opportunities that we get to step into are shown to us…. So, stay open.” Kate Williams on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes article about this new report here and more of her articles here too. On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by humanitarian, writer, and social entrepreneur Zainab Salbi. They discuss the difficult nature of working in the humanitarian space to address the many injustices that people, particularly women, face worldwide. Zainab explains how being open and vulnerable about her own traumatic experiences gave her the compassion and inspiration needed to tell women's stories and work to end oppression, systemic violence, and climate change. In a line of work that is so emotionally taxing, she's learned firsthand how crucial it is to resource yourself with the same kindness you show to others and care for your own emotional well-being. As she puts it, “You can't give out of an empty well.” Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual assault and violence against women. Climate change affects us all, but women are often left to pick up the pieces of families in poverty and crisis caused by climate disasters. Zainab Salbi, co-founder of the nonprofit Daughters for Earth, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss her efforts to empower women to counter climate change with activism, her previous work helping survivors of war and conflict and why she's made justice for women her life's calling. This episode originally aired Oct. 16, 2023.
“Philanthropy generally, we consider, contributing private money for public good or community good. And climate philanthropy is simply, when we are making those private contributions in ways that are going to address the climate crisis that our country and that the world is facing today. I would expand that slightly by saying that one of the trends that I'm seeing is a real interlinking of climate and nature problems and climate and nature solutions.” Heather Grady on Electric Ladies Podcast Philanthropy is being reinvented today, including what is now called “climate philanthropy.” It's in part about considering the solutions nature can provide to the climate crisis, instead of just relying on new technologies. They each have a singular purpose as well as a role in the bigger vision, and require accountability Listen to Heather Grady, Vice President and Practice Lead for Environment and Climate at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, explain how they are leveraging philanthropy to help avert climate catastrophes in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: What climate philanthropy is and how it works – and how they view “risk.” How they are leveraging the new federal funding, including the Inflation Reduction Act. What they think of the oil companies, ESG (environment, social, governance) and other hot topics. Which areas Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors focuses on and why Plus, insightful career advice …. “When women are clear that they do want to make a difference, that they want a job with purpose, that's a good thing to put in your cover letter and express on your cv. There are people who haven't worked on mission-driven organizations or companies yet. But if you've spent time, say, doing a lot of volunteer work in your community, whether it's climate or children's rights or whatever it may be, make sure that you're emphasizing that when you're applying for positions. We are really looking in my organization, and I see this increasingly, people are looking for new employees who are values-aligned and values aware.” Heather Grady on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Justin Winter, Cofounder, One Earth, on “philanthro-activism”. The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP 28, kicked off this Thursday. As with the summits in previous years, we arrive with the usual set of questions: Will pledges be met? Are the biggest polluters going to commit to support the most in need? Will the conference lead to meaningful change? The first day saw an agreement reached over a loss and damage fund, with countries already making initial pledges, including the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Germany. However, many say that the amount committed is not enough given the size of the economies of these nations. According to the U.N. Environment Programme, it is estimated that 80% of people displaced by climate change will be women. With a heavy focus on financial pledges, we contemplate whether the summit will deliver to meet the needs of women affected by the climate crisis. We also discuss an article published this week on MacKenzie Scott's unconventional style of giving large, unrestricted gifts to nonprofits, which was criticized due to concerns over the ability of smaller, newer, and grassroots nonprofits being able to absorb such large amounts of funds. To dig into these topics, Devex President and Editor-in-Chief Raj Kumar sits down with Daughters for Earth and Women for Women co-founder Zainab Salbi, who tunes in live from Dubai, as well as Devex Senior Reporter Michael Igoe, to discuss the top global development stories from the past week. The soul's liberation of realizing “I am” was amongst my first learnings from Zainab Salbi. A world renowned humanitarian, Zainab founded Women for Women International when she was 23 and dedicated decades to offering both human connection and $146 million of aid to over 400,000 women survivors of war and conflict. Her inner journey is equally inspiring and I was most excited to hear her answer to that ultimate question: Who am I? This experience of ‘descending all of her knowledge to her heart' revealed that our hearts have a language—One she can only learn through emptiness. “There's no value of emptiness. Yet, it is only when I go to emptiness that I can feel the divine,” she says. “It may not be spiritual for everyone. Though, for me, that is the path of my joy and freedom because I go to the place where all the space is. It's joy for no reason and all reasons. Love for all, no matter who. It is only when I arrive at emptiness that I can go to that vastness of emotions.” Zainab graciously explores her path of self-discovery—From the freedom of sharing the truth that imprisoned her from childhood to her evolving spiritual path and learning that “life regenerates itself like Earth,” which she's honoring with Daughters for Earth: A non-profit she co-founded to fund women and girls securing the health of our planet. While our conversation is woven with wide-ranging insights, she threads it with a single invitation: To honor the life we've been given.
The founder of Women for Women International, Zainab Salbi, introduces two fathers, one Palestinian and one Israeli, both damaged by the war. Today LIsa Dettmer will pay tribute to Jewish lesbian feminist writer and activist Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz who died way too soon in at 72 in 2018 and who was a personal shero of mine and who I have been remiss in celebrating on this show. Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz was a very important activist and writer, who made multiple theoretical contributions to understanding Judaism, lesbianism, and feminism as intersectional identities, extended an awareness of class and economic justice through a Jewish lens, and made visible racial differences within Jewish communities. Kaye/Kantrowitz was the founding executive director of Jews For Racial and Economic Justice and advocated Radical Diasporism as a progressive alternative to Zionism. First we will hear a reading by Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz from her last book “The color of jews: Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism” . and then I will talk Melanie's long time partner Leslie Cagan who is herself a long time lesbian feminist activist in peace and social justice movements and who was a chair of Pacifica Radio at one time as well. In the second half-hour, producer Chana Wilson speaks with along-time International Women's Rights activist and author. In 1993, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a foundation that supports women survivors of war and conflict. Then a year ago, she co-founded “Daughters for Earth.” Daughters for Earth provides resources to women around the world doing nature conservation, restoration, and regenerative agriculture projects that are contributing to solving the climate crisis. In the year since its founding, Daughters for Earth has funded 50 women-powered projects to protect and restore the earth. These projects span the globe, with projects in India, Africa, the Arctic, South America, Asia, the Middle East and the United States. For info about Daughters for Earth go to daughtersforearth.org/ The post Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz and Zainab Salbi, appeared first on KPFA.

Play through to the end to hear a special surprise unveiling of a protest piece created by the ArtLords, a collective of Afghan artists that was founded in Kabul in response to the injustices there. The artwork was created on a blank canvas during the Festival and completed just minutes before it was presented on stage during the panel. It now sits on display near the entrance to the Vital Voices Global Headquarters for Women's Leadership as a sign of solidarity for all the oppressed women and girls of Afghanistan, Iran and around the globe.
“We're in this moment right now where we have a very short window to drive the type of transformative change that's necessary to solve a climate crisis. And we believe at One Earth that philanthropy can play a really, really critical role in actually making this transformation possible….But less than 2% of all philanthropic capital goes to climate and environment issues, and just a fraction of that actually reaches efforts on the ground efforts” Justin Winters on Electric Ladies Podcast We think it's hot where we are, but emerging and rural areas have it much worse. One strategy to help them is now called “philanthro-activism.” What is it ? Enter One Earth, a new kind of philanthropic organization, run by women who believe that the people on the ground know best what will help their communities and save the planet. Listen to Justin Winters, Executive Director and Cofounder of One Earth – and former head of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation – explain how they are pooling the resources of both some of the world's richest people and normal people like you and me to help the most diligent, creative people doing the real work every day to avert climate catastrophes in their areas in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: What Philanthro-activism is and why they coined the term. How they developed this creative business model – and what Winter learned at DiCaprio's Foundation. Stories of people on the ground who One Earth is supporting and why Which areas of the economy One Earth focuses on and why (such as food security) Plus, insightful career advice …. “I would put purpose at the center, and service because we're in a moment where it really is being ambitious. Doesn't have to be tied to resources, right? Being ambitious can be about the type of change that you want to drive in the world..” Justin Winters on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Zainab Salbi, Cofounder of Daughters for Earth, one of the partners in One Earth – and Founder of Women to Women International and its former CEO Rosemary Atieno, Women Climate Centers International – on how they are helping women in rural Kenya grow their economies and address climate change at the same time. Natalie Jaresko, former finance minister of Ukraine – on the hidden power of ESG Kerry Bannigan, CEO of Fashion Impact Fund and Conscious Fashion Campaign – including reaching women in rural areas across the fashion industry supply chain · Sandrine Dixson, Co-president of the Club of Rome (global leaders) – on the need for a new economic model that puts people and planet ahead of profit. We live in a world where there's so much focus on matrix, statistics, and data, and while these are all important, they do not hold the soul of the mission and the vision. They are not the reason for growth or prosperity, but points of information. Zainab believes that a person has to keep their integrity towards the soul of the mission or the vision. Feminine leadership is putting as much importance to the actual mind in the facts as much as to the heart's knowledge, for the heart has wisdom, knowledge, and intelligence. If we run organizations only using our minds, it becomes broken, disconnected, and unsustainable. Zainab Salbi has frequently been named as one of the women changing the world by leading publications ranging from Newsweek to The Guardian. Oprah Winfrey identified her as one of the women changing the world to People Magazine and President Bill Clinton identified her as one of the 21st century heroes to Harper's Bazaar. Most recently Foreign Policy Magazine named her as one of “100 Leading Global Thinkers” and Watkins Magazine identified her as one of the top 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in 2020.At the age of 23, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a humanitarian organization dedicated to women survivors of wars. Under her leadership (1993–2011), Women for Women International grew from helping 30 women upon its inception to helping more than 420,000 women and distributing more than 100 million dollars in aid. Zainab is the author of several books, including the best seller Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny; Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam (with Laurie Buckland); The Other Side of War; Women's Stories of Survival and Hope; If You Knew Me You Would Care,(with photographs by Rennio Maifredi); and her latest Freedom is an Inside Job; Owning our Darkness and Our Light to Change Ourselves and the World. She is also the Executive Editor and Host of several shows including Through Her Eyes with Yahoo News, #MeToo, Now What? with PBS, The Zainab Salbi Project with Huffington Post , and The Nida'a Show with TLC Arabia. In early 2022, alongside Jody Allen, Zainab co-founded Daughters for Earth, a new fund and campaign that aims to inspire all women to engage in climate change action by mobilizing $100 million for on the ground, women-led efforts to protect and restore the Earth. “We're in this moment right now where we have a very short window to drive the type of transformative change that's necessary to solve a climate crisis. And we believe at One Earth that philanthropy can play a really, really critical role in actually making this transformation possible….But less than 2% of all philanthropic capital goes to climate and environment issues, and just a fraction of that actually reaches efforts on the ground efforts” Justin Winter on Electric Ladies Podcast When we think of philanthropy, we think of rich people using their foundations as they see fit, usually in a boring way, though they do make a big difference. But we don't know what their money does really. Natalie Jaresko, former finance minister of Ukraine – on the hidden power of ESG Kerry Bannigan, CEO of Fashion Impact Fund and Conscious Fashion Campaign – including reaching women in rural areas across the fashion industry supply chain Sandrine Dixson, Co-president of the Club of Rome (global leaders) – on the need for a new economic model that puts people and planet ahead of profit. “I co-founded Daughters For Earth, a collaborative effort between philanthropists and climate activists and women's rights activists to get together…to mobilize women and to put more resources into the hands of women. 70% of who is going to be impacted by climate disasters, such as displacement and food security, are women. Women are actually pivotal in two major solutions for climate change, which is to protect and preserve 50% of earth and to shift to regenerative agriculture…(but They are not being invited to the negotiating tables. As a matter of fact, not much is talked about women's pivotal role… and we are here to change it.” Zainab Salbi on Electric Ladies Podcast Women are both the most at risk from climate change disasters and pivotal to the solutions, because they are front and center in their communities, and the primary caregivers of families. Women are starting and running small nonprofits to help address these issue, some of whom have been guests on Electric Ladies Podcast. Now, four powerful women have come together to pool their resources, networks and know-how to mobilize $100 million to support women social entrepreneurs addressing climate change. It's called Daughters For Earth. Listen to Zainab Salbi, a cofounder of Daughters for Earth explain their work to Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson in this inspiring interview. Zainab is the Founder and former CEO of the powerful nonprofit Women to Women International that raised about $150 million to help women in conflict zones. You'll hear about: Why they are committed to helping women climate entrepreneurs across industries, not just nonprofits. The three areas they are focusing on for their grants – these are not loans, but grants. How they are helping the women of Ukraine, leveraging Zainab's powerful network that supports women in conflict zones. How you can help support these women entrepreneurs through Daughters For Earth Plus, insightful career advice …. “My biggest advice is prioritize. I really, really prioritize your wellbeing as interconnected to whatever you're working on. If you want people to be happy, you've got to be happy. If you are working on people to be healthy, you've got to be healthy. If you want people to be prosperous and well financially, you've got to be prosperous and well financially. it cannot be discrepancy between what you desire and what you're treating yourself….and be proactive about addressing that because that makes all the difference in your life and for your career, but in your life.” Zainab Salbi on the Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's related Forbes articles here too.
