Over 1,100 union coal miners in Brookwood, Alabama, have been on an unfair labor practices strike against Warrior Met Coal for over five months. For five months, workers and their families have been holding the line, demanding to get back what was stolen from them with their last contract, demanding to actually have time to spend with their families, demanding to be treated with the respect they deserve for making this mine more productive than ever. The UMWA's strike motto is "One day longer, one day stronger," and workers are showing no signs that they plan to back down. In Part I of this special two-part update on the miners' strike, our brother-in-arms Jacob Morrison from The Valley Labor Report interviews striking workers and supporters who attended a solidarity rally that the union held in Brookwood last week. Over 1,100 union coal miners in Brookwood, Alabama, have been on an unfair labor practices strike against Warrior Met Coal for over five months. And for five months, the mainstream media has barely made a peep about the strike. Instead, a small collection of independent journalists and local and progressive media outlets have been working overtime to cover this important story. Jacob Morrison, David Story, and Adam Keller at The Valley Labor Report (Alabama's only weekly labor radio talk show), have been doing more than almost anyone to cover the strike and support striking miners and their families. There is one person, however, who has done more than anyone to lift the strike at Warrior Met into public consciousness for five months straight, and that is independent journalist and all-around badass Kim Kelly. In Part II of our special, two-part update on the miners' strike, Jacob from TVLR and Kim have a wide-ranging conversation about Kim's labor and writing background, the experience of covering the Amazon union drive and the Warrior Met strike in Alabama, and what it means to truly care about and be invested in the people and struggles we cover in labor media. In this episode, Rev Karla discusses how she handles some of the hateful comments she gets on social media. It can be difficult to not let them hurt you, but in the end, they are just a reminder of why we are on this spiritual journey anyway. Many are just deleted and blocked, but some comments turn into teaching moments as an example of how sacred activism plays a role in spirituality. You can read more on this topic from Rev Karla in this week's blog post. Watch the uncut video of this episode on YouTube.

Hint Water founder and CEO Kara Goldin certainly knows a thing or two about entrepreneurship at this point, but that’s not where she got her start. During the 1990s, Kara was immersed in the world of Silicon Valley, working on products like Steve Job’s 2Market and AOL when it was at its peak. However, by the time the 2000s rolled around, Kara decided it was time to focus on raising her kids. But her next (and biggest) chapter was just around the corner. After initially noticing a personal need for healthy beverages that weren’t bogged down by sugars and artificial sweeteners, Kara launched Hint Water from her home just a few years later, despite having absolutely zero beverage industry experience. In our sixth episode of season four, Kara explains what drives her to take the same risks that many others simply choose to avoid. You’ll hear how a simple reply to a letter she sent just out of college emboldened her to move halfway across the country to NYC and will herself into her first position on a whim. You’ll also hear Kara expound on the virtues of remaining curious and how she used the hard lessons learned during the 2008-09 financial crisis to raise additional capital for her company to survive the economic climate triggered by the pandemic. Judith Collins is standing by her comment Nicky Hager needs to meet his maker, saying she believes one day everyone will. The National Party leader made the comment when speaking to a GreyPower crowd in Nelson. Queried about Hager's books The Hollow Men and Dirty Politics, in which Collins features, the National leader did little to hide her contempt. "He is a dreadful man and what he wrote about me was disgraceful," Collins said. "He still needs to meet his maker." She later clarified her comment to say Hager would one day have to answer for his decisions, as would everyone else. "When we all die we will have to atone to our maker and that's what Christians believe, that's what I believe," she told Morning Report. Collins pushed back when asked if the comment could have a chilling effect, due to the fact it was made by somebody who could be Prime Minister soon against a journalist. "I actually think that's a hysterical reaction from the Hager lot." And she won't be apologising. "You've got to be kidding me. Under no circumstances. I stand by what I say."

Paul was devoted to the task of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. He was determined to boldly open his mouth and preach truth to all people. He knew what was right and would not let the world turn him around. He put on the whole armor of God and went to battle with the ruler of darkness. He did all he could to stand and then he stood his ground. Knowing that the shield of faith would protect him from the fiery darts of the evil one, he refused to back down. We made it back to Bend and Mom got her job back at Trappers. She also typed up the divorce papers and was getting ready to send them off to Mac. Around this time she committed to enrolling in college with plans on becoming an attorney. Mom's friend was facing eviction because so many people were staying at the house so Mom took us to stay with our Grandma in Hermiston until she could find a more permanent place. When Mom got back to Bend, she met a guy and went out on a date. After a couple of weeks her and her new boyfriend came back to Hermiston to get us so we could get back into school. At this point we had been out of school for almost 6 weeks and there were only 5 weeks left. Mac was hassling Mom and even started calling our Grandma. But Mom was happy with her new relationship, she thought it was fun and relaxed and even mentioned that it kind of felt too good to be true. Mac refused to sign the summons when Mom sent the divorce papers so she had to start all over again and was planning on having him served with either a sheriff's deputy or Mac's parole officer. She also requested that Mac not be issued travel permits to Bend or Hermiston. Mom got a new job driving “MPAs” for a company in Sunriver.

The Packers may be feeling the effects of the injury bug early, but in the words of the late great Tom Petty, they won't back down! Despite injuries, dirty plays, weather delays, and temper tantrums from a former first round draft pick, the Packers improve to 3-1 on the season with a 35-14 dismantling of the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football. We'll dig in to the game and discuss how injuries will effect the team going forward and whether or not Danny Trevathan's hit on Davante Adams was dirty or not and if the punishment fit the crime. We'll also look ahead to this week's showdown in Jerry World against the Dallas Cowboys! Will this be a revenge game for the Cowboys? Or will the Packers once again roll into AT&T Stadium and get the win over Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott and a formidable Dallas Cowboys team looking to bounce back from a loss. PLUS! BCR remembers Tom Petty Is Cam Newton really just that dumb? Is Damarious Randall's time as a Packer coming to an end? The Claymaker sets the all-time Packers sack record. In this special Friday episode, Dennis visits the Los Feliz home of Daniel and Ben Barnz, the married couple behind the new movie "Cake." Daniel (center in the photo) directed, Ben (left) produced. They talk about how they met, how they work together without going crazy and how they used Scrabble tiles to create the name Barnz out of their original last names. Daniel also discusses the elaborate look books he creates when developing a new project, what it's like to shoot Jennifer Aniston climbing onto the ledge of a busy LA freeway, Jen's balls-out commitment to the project and, of course, the wondrousness that is Jen's hair. Daniel also talks about what it's like to be in the awards season derby, surviving the political fall-out from his last film, the teaching drama "Won't Back Down", the canoe trip with his dad he thought would never end and the voice-mail from a singing superstar he'll never forget. Oh, and he lets Dennis try out his cherished treadmill desk.
