“All good men and women must take responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we could only imagine.” — Jim Rohn I am so excited to welcome the Women's Lacrosse coaching staff of my alma matter, THE George Mason University! Today is a special convo since it has been 20 years since I competed for the university and it's such a blessing to reconnect with the coaches to discuss their mission, vision, and values for GMU LAX 2024. Head Coach, Kara Mupo leads the staff and team with an ideal balance of head and heart--not shying away from the green and gold bricks that were laid before her to establish and grow the D1 program. Legacy takes time, character, and grit, so it's awesome to hear of the enthusiasm and personal/professional work ethic of this 2024 coaching staff. They are here to make some noise and continue to elevate the program as a whole- on and off the field (players & humans). Assistant coaches, Nate Medic and Riley Ewing introduce themselves and share some of their coaching philosophies, responsibilities, goals, and personal experiences that led them to coaching. This is a great opportunity to get to meet the entire staff and hear/see more of their human side, especially for the parents and families of players that aren't local, that don't get as much face time (that was my family:). Competing at the top level of anything is such a privilege and life shaping experience that you carry with you in everything you do moving forward. It more than warms my heart to see such intentional, mission driven humans take the reins of the GMU Lacrosse program that is (and will always be) a fundamental piece of my personal foundation and continued influence on my own mission, vision, and values. GO PATRIOTS! Highlights: Building a legacy. How you do something is how you do everything. Coaching. Life skills through sports. Chasing your calling. Leadership and responsibility. Breakdown and breakthrough. The whole human approach. Building on something great and seeing a vision before anyone else does. Kara Mupo, Head Coach: Two-time NCAA champion Kara Mupo was named the fifth head coach in the history of the George Mason women's lacrosse program on May 26, 2020. Mupo's pedigree of excellence within the sport includes a stellar playing career as a collegian at Northwestern and as a professional with both the U.S. National Team and the Women's Professional Lacrosse League. In addition, Mupo has compiled a diverse and accomplished resume during five seasons as a collegiate assistant coach. Possessing a gifted offensive mind, Mupo helped guide Stony Brook to a No. 1 national ranking in 2018 and Stanford to an NCAA appearance in 2019. "We are thrilled to welcome Kara to our George Mason family," Edwards said. "She has achieved an elite level of success during every stint of her career while being mentored by some of the top voices in the sport. Kara is a tireless recruiter who possesses the innate ability to develop players. Her high energy style and engaging personality make her a natural leader, and I know our student-athletes will thrive under her direction." Mupo most recently served as offensive coordinator at Ohio State alongside former George Mason head coach Amy Bokker during the shortened 2020 campaign. Mupo's championship legacy began as an attack at Northwestern, where she won two national titles (2011, 2012) and led the Wildcats to four consecutive Final Four appearances. While helping to build one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the sport, Mupo scored 186 points (136g, 50a) over her career and served as team captain as a senior. She began her coaching career as an assistant at William & Mary for two seasons, before moving on to an assistant role at Stony Brook in 2018, where she developed the most potent offense in the nation. Under her guidance, the Seawolves ascended to a No. 1 national ranking while leading the country in points per game (29.28), scoring margin (+10.80), assists per game (11.23) and shot percentage (.547). Mupo joined Bokker – the former Mason head coach – at Stanford in 2019. In Palo Alto, Mupo again orchestrated an outstanding offensive season while transforming the Cardinal into the Pac-12's top scoring unit. During the 2019 campaign, the Cardinal led the league in shot percentage (.431), assists (125), goals per game (13.89) and points per game (20.47), culminating in an NCAA Tournament appearance. Upon Bokker's naming as head coach at Ohio State, Mupo joined her in Columbus, where the Buckeyes had amassed wins over Cincinnati and Marquette, among others, before the season ended in March 2020. A former member of the U.S. Women's National Team, Mupo also is a decorated player in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL) and has played for the New England Command over the past two seasons. She won the first WPLL Championship as a member of the Command and led the league in scoring for the second time in three seasons. In 2016, she was a member of the Philadelphia Force and earned all-star status after she led the league in goals. A native of Rocky Point, N.Y., Mupo earned a bachelor of science in human development and psychological services from Northwestern in 2014 and also earned her master's degree in sports administration at Northwestern in 2015. Nate Medic, Asst. Coach: Medic joins the Patriots after spending years as the head coach of the Colonial Forge High School girls' lacrosse program in Stafford. Under his leadership, the Eagles finished runner-up in the 6A 2021 Virginia State tournament and were two-time Virginia State Regional Champions. The Butler, Pa. native, was named Region Coach-of-the-Year three times. In his five-year stint, the program compiled an impressive 60-12 record. Medic has been coaching club lacrosse in Virginia for the past five years, most recently with the Yellow Jackets Mid Atlantic in Lorton. Before that, Medic was the head coach for Fall Line Lacrosse Club in Stafford. Medic played lacrosse collegiately at Bethany College for one season before transferring to Slippery Rock and participating on the men's hockey team for three seasons. A 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock University, Medic earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. He began a teaching career as a Health and PE teacher at King George High School in 2016 before moving to the same position at Colonial Forge High School in 2018. Riley Ewing, Asst. Coach: Ewing, a two-time graduate of The Ohio State University and five-year member of the women's lacrosse team, will join the Mason ranks after a year working in Chicago as an ACS Consultant. She also spent the summer months coaching a club lacrosse team out of Marietta, Ga., mentoring players and helping them through the recruiting process. During her time at Ohio State, Ewing was a three-year starter and a three-time Big Ten Academic Honor Roll honoree. An attacker who also specialized in the draw control, Ewing finished her career ranking seventh all-time in Buckeye history with 119 draw control wins to her name. She also sits at fifth all-time for draw controls in a single season with 71 in 2019, with a career-high 10 draw controls in a single game. Ewing was also named to the inaugural U.S. Women's Box Training Team in September 2023. The team will participate in three training camps in the Fall of 2023 as it continues preparation for the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships in Utica. N.Y. Great cities are measured in several ways - for The Best Ceats this usually involves taking stock of the restaurants, bars, hotels, and other forms of hospitality and entertainment available for people to enjoy. One major piece of that puzzle, is professional sports franchises and their relationship with their host city, or area. To learn more about this, I am joined by Paul Speaker, the CEO of the San Diego Seals, and the Las Vegas Desert Dogs - both franchises within the National Lacrosse League. However - as fate would have it - it isn't just local professional teams we get to discuss, as Paul and his team are running the logistics for the upcoming 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship. One of the most exciting world tournaments in all of sports, the championship is a celebration of the sport, culture, history, and the growth of one of the most exciting spectacles in the world. We sit down to talk about the work that goes into an undertaking like this, working with the city, sponsors, and more. As someone who has played and coached lacrosse for more than 20 years, this is an intensely personal episode for me, and one that I was humbled to record. I hope you enjoy, but more importantly, I hope you purchase tickets and come witness for yourself just how exciting the game of lacrosse can be. Prior to joining USA Lacrosse, Marc was the Chief Commercial Officer for KlarisIP, a boutique intellectual property and media consultancy. He was charged with advising major sport and esports properties on strategy, growth, revenue generation, and organizational transformation. Marc's experiences include leading his own consultant business, MR21 Advisory where he advised global esports and gaming companies. Prior, Marc was the EVP of Commercial for Lagardère Sports (now Sportfive), a full-service global sports agency. Marc spent 17 seasons leading business operation and development for the New York Jets (NFL) and he worked for Hofstra University, leading marketing and development for intercollegiate athletics. Marc has also taught as an Associate Adjunct Professor at Hofstra University and continues to advise and mentor in the technology and esports Venture capital accelerator community. Marc has a Juris Doctor from St. John's University School of Law, and an MBA and BA from Hofstra University. Marc had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “The thing that really resonated with me was how Bill Parcells could lead and how he could connect with people” (6:20). “Distraction is the number one enemy of high performance” (7:15). “The first thing we've focused on [at USA Lacrosse] is simplifying our mission” (8:30). “Each of our business heads has to submit three things they're not going to do this year” (10:35). “How do we look at our fans and our players like customer acquisition planning in the private sector model? What does it cost to acquire a player? What does it cost to retain a player? And not just players from a community with resources, also players from a community without resources” (15:30). “Lacrosse was an access point that changed my life” (20:30). “Lacrosse changes people's lives… you hear that more from lacrosse players than I've heard it from any other sport” (21:20). “I'm very comfortable being uncomfortable” (21:45). “You need coaches of color to work with the kids of color” (23:00). “The more we talk about this lax-bro culture, the more we perpetuate it” (24:30). “One of the things we want to do is teach cultural competency to our players and coaches” (25:10). “The MBA was a competitive necessity, not a competitive advantage” (29:05). “I'm very competitive. I'm driven more by my hatred of losing than my joy of winning” (37:20). “What I've learned is to take the foot off the gas sometimes” (37:30). “It was about how do I put myself in a position to be competitively different than everybody else” (41:00). “Don't let the job change you” (46:30). “There are no throwaway comments as a leader” (47:30). “What you do sometimes matters more than what you say” (47:35). “Disagreement leads to better decision making” (48:30). “Think in years, not in months” (49:20). “If I don't know something, I'm not going to fake it” (49:55). “People remember stories more than they remember numbers and stats” (53:45). “We need to tell stories and we need to tell them often” (57:10). “For all of us, our greatest strength is our greatest weakness” (58:40). “Most people have a lot of value sitting on a shelf that they don't use” (1:11:00). Additionally, you can follow Marc on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I'd also encourage you to check out the USA Lacrosse and World Lacrosse websites. Thank you so much to Marc for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Five teams competed at the first women's edition of the annual European Box Lacrosse Invitational. The event is commonly called EBox, so the women's version has taken the nickname SheBox. The tournament was the first opportunity for women in Europe to play box lacrosse, which will have a women's world championship for the first time in 2024. This week on LaxBeat, host Stephen Stamp has conversations with five participants in the inaugural SheBox, which was universally acclaimed as a huge success. Lizzie Bottrill is from England, where she has been part of the national development field lacrosse team, and was one of three English women to play for Prague Sports at SheBox. Becky Moloney has been a goalie for Ireland's field team and is a driver of the sport in the nation. She played between the pipes for Team Eire, which was coached by Bellingham, Wash., native and Prague resident Garrett Goshorn at the tournament. Mac MacDonough and Delaney Benson both grew up in California and have both been living in Israel, where they put enormous time and energy into coaching lacrosse. They'll both be representing Israel at World Lacrosse championship this summer. The five guests have diverse backgrounds, but they all agree that SheBox was a huge first step for lacrosse in Europe and was a seminal moment in the growth of the women's box game.
Stan has served as the Executive Director of the OLA since 1986, after first launching his career inamateur sport in 1982 as the OLA Program Director, before being promoted to OLA Technical Director and eventually to the position of Executive Director – a position the held for 35 years.Stan began his legendary playing career when he picked up his first lacrosse stick at the age of 12. He would become an all-star box player for Oshawa. His playing style was an immediate threat to his opponent's goaltenders. As a Junior “A” player, Stan ranked 5th in All-Time Goals with 319 goals for the Gaels, and was named Most Valuable Player in Junior “A” in 1975 and 1976, as well as being named Major Series Lacrosse's Rookie of the Year in 1977.Stan's international career began in 1976 as a three-time member of Team Canada's field lacrosseprogram (1978, 1982 and 1990), leading Team Canada to a World Championship gold medal in 1978 by scoring six goals and tallying three assists, including the game-winner in the 17-16 overtime win against the United States. The 1978 World Lacrosse Championships were a watershed moment for the sport throughout Canada and a springboard to kickstart the growth of field lacrosse throughout Ontario. At the time, he was named “Player of the World”.Stan played collegiately for North Carolina State University in the United States, where he was a four-time All-American selection and still ranks among the all-time NCAA leaders in total Goals Scored (193), Points (280), Points Per Game (6.36), Goals Per Game (4.39) - a record that still stands 41 years later.Cockerton's accomplishments as a player have been recognized through his inductions into theOshawa Sports Hall of Fame (1990), Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame (1997, Inaugural Class),Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2003), USA Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2014), and North CarolinaState Hall of Fame (2016).As a builder Cockerton's passion for the sport saw him serve as Vice President of theInternational Lacrosse Federation (now World Lacrosse) from 2003-2010, and then as President from 2010-2017. Cockerton's contributions to the game internationally have helped shape the aspiration to return the sport of lacrosse to the Olympic Games. Stan was proud to witness the most historic moment for lacrosse: the official recognition of the sport by the International Olympic Committee on July 20th, 2021. He was honoured with the Lester B. Pearson Award in 2011 by Lacrosse Canada for his outstanding contributions to the sport, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 by World Lacrosse for his international growth and development efforts.

An ESPN article written last year had an excellent definition: Jeff Borzello, ESPNEssentially, it's a database of every player who has interest in transferring from his or her current school. In other words its like a stripped down dating app where players who are unhappy with their current situation can let the world know as much, and reopen their recruitment. There are several reasons as to why a player would enter the portal and we discuss a few of them on the show: Unhappy with coach, playing time, team dynamic School doesn't have the major you decide to persue You have remaining eligibility but want to finish by pursuing grad school somewhere else Family dynamics change and you wish to be closer to home The coach leaves and a new coach has a system that doesn't fit you We're not advocating that any of these reasons are right or wrong, but we do agree that there are times where transferring makes sense, and there are times when its better to stick it out. Last Week In our previous episode we took a deep dive into the impact of the National Lacrosse Leagues (NLL) tv deal with espn/tsn and what it means for the future of the league. We also discussed the new(ish) olympic sixes format from World Lacrosse and gave our honest opinions on what works and what doesnt. At the end of the day, we love the idea of making lacrosse more accessible and getting it into the Olympics, but we're not going to blindly accept Sixes in its current form. With a few tweaks, the game can be even better. Let's see what they come up with over the next few years, but it's a solid start. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lax-all-stars/message

This week on the OTCBPodcast we welcome back our old friends Steve Govett and Pat Gregoire. With the announcement of the IOC granting World Lax full recognition, it's another step towards us actually seeing Lacrosse Sixes played in the Olympics. Steve has been a part of the World Lacrosse advisory board as an independent director for the last couple of years, so he's got a lot of the answers to many of our questions. We're in but we're not officially in. As voice of the Halifax Thunderbirds, Pat Gregoire can't wait to get back inside The Nest on December 4th. He's also been busy with CoolBet Canada as we all hope to be able to lay some best on lacrosse in the near future. Plus we'll talk to him about the 2nd half of the PLL season and take a look at the upcoming OJALL bubble season. All that and more on this week's OTCBPodcast.
A day after the IOC granted full recognition to World Lacrosse in advance of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, CEO Jim Scherr joins IL's Terry Foy to discuss what it means for the sport, what the next steps are, how Sixes fits in and the Iroquois Nationals' path to being a part of a potential future Olympic Games.
World Lacrosse Sixes is the third discipline for the sport. It’s designed to appeal to a younger audience that values more action and a quicker pace to its sports. But a smaller field and fewer players also offers advantages. World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr joined Around the Rings managing editor Gerard Farek in the latest edition of ATRadio to give insight into the sport’s newest addition.
Jason Levesque is the current D1 Women's Head Coach at St.Bonaventure University. He has had multiple coaching stops in his career, including as an assistant for the Canadian Men's Field team. Talking Sixes Global Significance Sixes lacrosse has been in lacrosse news a lot this week, with the announcement of World Lacrosse's new discipline on Tuesday, the lacrosse industry was torn on how to react. Those of us with international ties understand how hard other countries are working to grow the game and how beneficial Sixes will be in that growth. As Jason said during our interview, the eyeballs an Olympic broadcast would provide creates a new wave of potential fans, players, and coaches. Building a Sixes Roster Full disclosure, neither of us know exactly what the roster limitations will be but we do understand that the rosters will be capped and much smaller than the world games roster of 23. With that being said, we dove a little deeper into what types of players we see being beneficial: traditional 2 way midfielders, guys who grew up playing more attack but transitioned to d-mid in college (happens a lot), BOX players. One unique situation we cant wait to watch play out is Blaze Riorden. Blaze is a world class field goalie and an exceptional forward in the NLL. This means that if you plan to carry 2 goalies, which you should, Blaze could be taking runs out of the cage adding important depth in this new fast paced style of lacrosse. The main point here is, teams will be made up of generalists, guys that can do a little bit of everything (guys like Jeremy Thompson, Zach Currier, Kyle Harrison). Becoming a Women's Coach With an impressive resume as men's coach (Canisius, Alma, Adams State, IMG, Team Canada) what led Jay to becoming a D1 women's head coach? A chance opportunity while working at the IMG academy led to Jay having an increased role helping the women's teams. Over time he grew a stronger and deeper appreciation for the women's game until a familiar friend and mentor (Randy Mearns) brought the vacancy at St.Bonaventure to his attention. It appears Levesque is all in on the women's game and hopes that others will learn to appreciate the game the same way he did. A double European silver-medallist who has represented Wales at two World Cups, she's also heavily involved with the administration, growth and diversity of the game – as part of both European Lacrosse and World Lacrosse as well. And Erin's story is a brilliant one to tell – open, honest and genuine. From growing up in a community where sport took centre-stage, to the pressures of collegiate sport in the USA; from bouncing back from injury, to the reality of coming out, to realising her dreams in the sport … it's a great conversation with someone we've wanted to have on the show for a while! Find out more info here.PLL UpdateIt was a big week for the league as it finished up pool play. Here's how things shook out:Whipsnakes 4-0, +24Chrome 3-1, + 5Archers 3-1, -2Redwoods 2-2, -3Waterdogs 1-3, -3Atlas 1-3, -10Chaos 0-4, -11The Whipsnakes are maybe the least talked about team but obviously the best. Their closest game was their first, a 13-9 win over Redwoods. They dismantled Archers yesterday in the second half en route to a 17-11 win. They didn't dominate last year en route to their championship, so what is the difference this year? There are a couple: 1) Zed Williams and 2) the bubble format. Zed Williams - Last year, Rambo led the team with 49 points while Mike Chanenchuk had 34, Ryan Drenner had 21 followed by Ben Reeves with 16. Basically, Rambo had to carry the team (which he did, winning the MVP). This year is different. In 12 games last season, Rambo averaged 4.08 points per game with the next highest being Chanenchuk with 2.83. While Rambo is averaging more points per game this year (5.25, including a 10 point game over the Archers) Williams is helping to carry the load with 4.25 points per game. John Haus in the midfield is also helping Chanenchuk who both have 10 points. Simply put, there is more point sharing with the Whipsnakes which makes them even scarier. The big question for the offseason is do you break up the Maryland pro team? What would be the justification? The Bubble - Also known as PLL Island, being isolated and playing a short schedule plays into hot teams. Lacrosse games are known to have scoring runs, but so do seasons. Over the course of a normal season where you are traveling all across the country, your team is bound to have better weeks than others. In the bubble, the hot team will reign and that hot team is the Whipsnakes. As good as the Archers are (and as good as we want them to be) they entered the final game with an OT win over Chrome, a two goal win over Waterdogs and a one goal win over Atlas. So the Whipsnakes enter the bubble with the MVP, the gold badge on their jersey and became the hottest team, including the hottest goalie (Bernlohr) and face-off specialist (Nardella). Dethroning the champs will be difficult. Grant Ament has been a standout (if you listened to the podcast with Adam Ghitleman, you would know this already) but this clip is awesome! US Lacrosse Magazine broke down the group play round. Play resumes on Tuesday with Chrome taking on Chaos (3:30 pm, NBC Sports Gold), Redwoods v. Waterdogs (6:00 pm, NBC Sports Gold) and Atlas v. Archers (8:30 pm, NBC Sports Network). These literally popped up when I was about to press send. Please watch. The PLL coverage has done wonders for the state of Utah and lacrosse. Some words of advise from Dom Starsia. There was also an update from World Lacrosse regarding the Iroquois playing in the 2020 World Games. That's it for this week. Don't forget to stay hydrated and wear a mask. It's working!— Tim Haslam This is a public episode. Lacrosse legend, Casey Powell, shares his journey on and off the lacrosse field on The Brink of Midnight Podcast. Casey Powell is one of the most accomplished lacrosse players in history. From winning NCAA (Syracuse University) and world championships (MLL, NLL), All Star and MVP titles, and being the face of the only major lacrosse video game on the market, he has truly done it all in the world of lacrosse. Like a lot of us, Casey was drawn to sport through imagination and backyard games. The first to have and hold a lacrosse stick in his small New York town, he developed an almost instant passion for lacrosse that underscores all that he does in the sport community today. Whether it's innovating through his new Speed Lacrosse, serving others through his World Lacrosse Foundation, or connecting one-on-one with youth players across the country, Casey's authenticity is undeniable and a unique mix of humility and style…the same mix he developed as a kid dodging clotheslines and apple trees, playing in the neighborhood. Sports matter. From the lessons earned and community built around shared purpose, and this conversation will move you to think creatively about how to chase your passion while supporting your own community in profound ways.
