In season 2's first interview, I am so excited to chat with Teacher Paula Gabriela, a fellow English teacher, and a comedic genius using comedy and a lot of fun to support English learners. In this episode, we talk about using your native language as a tool, English being a bridge for connection, the myth of learning "like a native", trusting your teacher, and her tips for being successful in English. It's a longer-than-usual episode, but worth every minute of truth and fun we share. One of my favorite takeaways was her truth about the goal of language learning being communication. Enjoy! Charlotte Garner is a 58-year-old runner and cyclist, living in France, who only took up sports ten years ago, aged 48. She advocates for the physical and mental benefits of sports for women in their 50s. In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, she shares her journey of getting involved in sports and how it has transformed her life. Charlotte grew up in Wales but has lived in France all her life, working as a freelance translator and raising her two daughters. It wasn't until her early 40s that she started to become interested in sports. After a divorce, Charlotte moved to Leon and got into running, completing her first 5km and 10km race. She felt a sense of achievement after completing the distance and proud to be part of a community of runners. Joining a running club changed her running for the better, and having a coach and following a training plan helped her structure her running routine. Charlotte has since completed seven marathons and two ultra marathons, enjoying the challenge of pushing herself further. Charlotte's journey is an inspiration for women who may have thought it was too late to start being active. It is never too late to start, and the physical and mental benefits are well worth it. *** Stay updated with the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast by hitting the subscribe button. My special guest for this episode is my daughter Grace! We had a lot of fun preparing to do this episode. I'm trying to convince her to do more. (We talked about doing a separate podcast about learning psychology and ministry. ) Grace grew up in Portland. She is getting ready to go to college in Seattle in two weeks so it is really meaningful to spend time with her. Of course, I think she is amazing and I am proud of her. I love how kind she is, she's a loyal friend. Of my kids she probably most shares my sense of humor, and interest in Marvel movies and is the most verbal processor. She likes to play the violin, read, K-POP music, and sing in church. We've spent a lot of time at the library, movies, and coffee shops together when she was growing up. Many parts of the world are currently experiencing significant levels of violence and conflict. The role of education and language learning in these areas is very important, and can provide short and long term benefits for people in these situations. This episode is released on the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in recognition of this our field report focuses on a British Council programme entitled “Teaching and Learning in Difficult Times”. This programme has, to date, provided training in trauma-sensitive pedagogy to more than 1,000 Ukrainian English language teachers. In our interview, we talk to Diana Abu Zayed, a teacher in Gaza in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, who shares with us some of her practical experiences of teaching in a conflict area.Download the show notes, transcript in Arabic and English, and activity booklet

Wherever you are in the world, and whatever your context, story will almost certainly be an important part of the teaching and learning context. However, what is meant by the word' story' may differ from place to place, ranging from the type of traditional tale found in coursebooks, to oral narratives created by students themselves, to digital creations found online. To develop our understanding of these different contexts we first speak to Jamie Keddie, an expert in the way we can use different forms of ‘story' to teach English. His passion and knowledge of the subject will be sure to stimulate your own classroom practice. After this, we visit the Oasis Centre in Cardiff to learn more about their novel approach to using storytelling to develop their students' English language skills.Download the show notes, activity booklet and transcript in Arabic or English.

What exactly is a side job? A side job is any type of employment or source of income that is not your primary source of income. A side job is not the same as a part-time job, and it frequently provides more freedom than a part-time position. It is an additional source of income that you bring in during your spare time that can help you save money, get out of debt, and achieve other financial goals that your full-time job does not support. Here are 20 side jobs that will allow you to make more money without interfering with your day job. Many of these can be done either online and/or on the weekends. Work as a transcriptionist. Many times in life we do everything within our power to achieve our goal, whether that be a new job, to bring pride to others or ourselves, and to finally get over that hurdle our mental health has been lately. It's easy to forget how far you've come when you see how far you still have left to go, but that doesn't mean you can't celebrate your accomplishments now. In this episode Sarah Elkins and her good friend Megan Miller discuss the importance of allowing yourself to change and to celebrate every victory, no matter how small, because those victories are proof of your success. Highlights Sharing without any intention doesn't help you. Sometimes you don't notice how much things change until you step back or get an outside perspective. Celebrate the wins. You get out what you put in. Quotes It's soul, it's about how you do it and why you do it. The advice we give out a lot of the time is advice we need to hear at that point in time. About Megan Megan Miller is the CEO of Aprovechar Language Solutions, LLC, a company which acts as a bridge between English and Spanish language learners. Her personalized and small group programs take a habit-based approach, and whether it's in class or a Book Club – you know you'll have fun! She also helps IT companies in Latin America and Europe tell their stories for a U.S.-based audience through translation and localization projects. Megan has a Bachelor's in Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture and is a certified to Teach English as a Foreign Language. Check out her Instagram and LinkedIn! As well as her website, Approvechar Language Solutions! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. There are ways that you can travel without even having years of savings in your banks. That's something I learned from Jenaya. When she said that she was moving to China in 12 days, I asked her , “Why teach English abroad?” She was already qualified teach in America and employed in the teaching profession. She said the only word that I needed to answer my other question, “Is it worth it to teach abroad?” Travel. She was the person that introduced me to the world of “you can pack up your bags and travel, you can figure it out as you go,” which is why this week's podcast was all about Jenaya and how she did it all! Throughout the podcast, we went over how she got to China, how she got her footing, and how she went from a fish out of the water to a business owner that's making some serious moves! She did it all by teaching and traveling, and in this episode, we're going to be talking about what all of that entails! Are you asking yourself, "Should I teach English abroad?" This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Achieve3000.The webinar recording can be accessed here.According to the Brookings Institution, the number of English learners (ELs) in U.S. public schools has grown by roughly 60 percent over the last decade. While the level of diversity they have brought us holds plenty of potential value for all students, we are not yet able to capitalize on that, as many English learners are not enrolled in schools with teachers who have been given the sufficient preparation and training to teach them. Listen to Dr. John Nelson, former Assistant Superintendent of the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) in Southern California, where more than a third of the district's 30,000 K-6 students are classified as English learners, for an engaging edWeb podcast about how to help all educators support multilingual students. School and district leaders learn how to improve outcomes by:Supporting collaborative academic planning efforts across subject areasProviding ongoing professional development with an EL emphasisEmbedding coaching around understanding the language development needs of students learning English as a new languageThis recorded edWeb podcast is of interest to PreK-12 school and district leaders, teachers, librarians, and education technology leaders.Achieve3000 Together, unlocking potential and accelerating learning for every student
