The composer and producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds met the Cork singer-songwriter Eoin French aka Talos after he ran a marathon in Iceland. A friendship was struck, that quickly developed into a musical partnership, as seen at Sounds From A Safe Harbour in Cork in 2023, when the festival director Mary Hickson put the pair together for a collaboration. Now six months after Eoin's death, Arnalds and French's family, friends and collaborators have been celebrating the artist's creativity and legacy with the stunning song they wrote together 'We Didn't Know We Were Ready'. The song was performed on The Tommy Tiernan show on RTÉ in January under Arnalds' Opia community banner with vocals from Niamh Regan, Ye Vagabonds, JFDR, The Staves, Sandrayati Fay, Dermot Kennedy, Laoise Leahy, Memorial, Christof Van Der Ven and most poignantly of all, Eoin's wife Steph French. In our chat with Ólafur today, he recounts meeting Eoin, their creative time spent together and the instructions he received from Eoin before he died to finish the record they made together, which will be released later this year. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Songs referenced on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify Playlist Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

For the final episode of the series, Daithí talks to author and rewilder, Eoghan Daltun. They chat about the process Eoghan set in motion in the mid 2000's to restore healthy native ecosystems on his 73-acre farm on the Beara Peninsula, Cork. Hear about the recovery of the ecosystems, the diversity of native species that he has seen returning to the forest, as well as the harm caused to the woodland regeneration process by alien invasive species, such as Sika deer. A small farmer himself, Eoghan strongly advocates that landowners should be rewarded for protecting ecosystems due to the benefits they provide for society, such as flood prevention and resilience to wildfires. Eoghan also has some very interesting views on the classification of what constitutes a native species and makes a compelling case for the introduction of various species, including Beavers. After the interview, musician Brían MacGloinn of Ye Vagabonds closes the episode with his beautiful song 'Cuckoo'. - Links: 1. Eoghan's Instagram: @irishrainforest 2. What do folk songs of the Balkans, traditional Irish music and a Metallica concert all have in common? Musician Briget Boyle can tell you. She understands and appreciates the importance of musical connections between people and how shared experiences create a culture of song. Through this lens, she has explored an incredible breadth of influences that she draws from in her solo work and expresses directly in her collaborations True Life Trio and Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble. On a musical journey from the start, she began writing songs at the age of 12 and received an invaluable education from her parents who were both music industry professionals. Briget has long felt the call to songwriting and to use her powerful and beautiful voice to express truth through music. She grew up in Madden as Danielle Carragher, but since reaching back in time and taking her maternal great grandmother's long lost surname as her stage name, Dani Larkin was born. And it's not just the name that Dani has adopted from the past. The Armagh singer/songwriter and musician's songs also transcend time, steeped in Irelands ancient landscape, mythologies and folklore. Dani began writing at the age of 11 with a poem and since then years of working hard and performing , eventually saw her become the quintessential overnight success. Her debut album, ‘Notes For A Maiden Warrior' was released in to 2021 to rave reviews. ‘striking debut,' ‘stunning,' ‘otherworldly,' ‘powerful,' ‘you can feel the music in your bones,' are just a few accolades from the critics. A whirlwind year of touring home and abroad followed, amidst nominations for ‘Best Album' at this year's Northern Ireland Music Prize and ‘Best Emerging Artist' at the RTE Folk Awards. She opened for Snow Patrol at sold-out London Palladium Theatre and Belfast's Waterfront, and after performing at SXSW festival in Austin Texas, it was off to Vancouver before coming home to tour with Declan O'Rourke. Armagh I caught up with Dani, after she took a short breather in Galway, and she spoke about her life, her music and her philosophies on both. While she's inspired by where she comes from and the legacies of the land, Dani, who has a degree in history and sociology and a masters in international conflict and cooperation, has also used her music to unite, working in places as far afield as Palestine, Indonesia and Columbia. It's back on the road again closer to home in the coming months however, with Dani's next tour kicking off on April 29 at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival in Belfast, followed by a UK tour with Ye Vagabonds and some shows of her own. The Panti Personals - S2 E2 - Ye Vagabonds Panti Bliss is with Brían and Diarmuid Mac Glionn, otherwise known as Ye Vagabonds, the multi-award winning harmonising brothers who hail from Co Carlow but whose music, songs and story are dipped in the waters of their mother's homeland, Arranmore Island in Co Donegal. Ye Vagabonds picked up best band at this year's RTÉ Irish Folk Awards as well as best folk track for their version of 'I'm A Rover' and with Panti Bliss they share the roots of their music and how the Cobblestone Pub in Smithfield, (which is now under threat), played such a part in their evolution as performers. For Panti they perform 'I'm A Rover' live and in hilarious detail tell the adventures of their All Boats Rise, slow tour, along the canalways with Myles O'Reilly, and perform one of the songs from that tour 'The Pride of The Barrow'. As they head into the mix for their third album they talk about 'blood harmonies' that unspoken sound language of siblings who sing together and gives us a unique insight into how they work together with the performance of a new song, written together. Since first lifting a camera in 2010, multi tasking O'Reilly has filmed, directed and edited over 100 music video promo's and 20+ music documentaries of Irish musicians at home and abroad, some of which include Glen Hansard, Villagers, Imelda May, Lisa O'Neill, Ye Vagabonds, Sinead O'Connor and Lisa Hannigan alongside other International artists such as Hollywood sound track virtuoso Ernst Reijseger, Icelandic artists Soléy, Múm and Amiina, US soul phenomenon Janelle Monae and UK folk trio The Staves. Early life as a working musician began for Myles in 2003 with the band Juno Falls. Signed for two albums by Sony UK and then V2 records, Juno Falls disbanded in 2010. Ten years later and in a global pandemic lockdown, Myles returned to making music and has since composed, recorded and released a plethora of works in the ‘ambient' music genre under the moniker Indistinct chatter. Since beginning a Pateron account in 2018 enabling followers to fund his film projects, O'Reilly's camera lens is increasingly more focused on discovering and supporting little-known emerging artists, to help “represent some of the most talented but hard to pigeonhole musical visionaries in Ireland today”. Now almost a full time vocation, his efforts to seek out and endorse new music extends to the curation of an annual rising-artist stage at the renown Body&Soul festival, and the production of a critically acclaimed web series This Ain't No Disco, co-created with eminent Irish broadcaster Donal Dineen of ‘No Disco' fame. Filmmaker Myles O'Reilly, with Islander, made the documentary Backwards To Go Forwards, which they released for free on Vimeo on Christmas Day. They said they made it to take a little snapshot of a very small portion of what special things are happening in Irish folk and traditional music right now. Artists featured include This Is How We Fly, Cormac Begley, Radie Peat, Ye Vagabonds, Slow Moving Clouds, and more. I got to chat with Myles in his studio in Dublin at the end of November while the edition of Backwards To Go Forwards was ongoing. We chatted about why he made the documentary, how his love of traditional music developed, how he transitioned from a musician to a filmmaker, how This Ain't No Disco came about - and whether we can expect more of it - and lots of other things. If you enjoy the show, it'd be really appreciated if you gave the podcast a like and share and maybe rate and review on iTunes. Thank you!
Ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album, one half of Ye Vagabonds, Brían Mac Gloinn, chats about how the LP came together, how the pair write and workshop songs, how key videographer Myles O'Reilly has been in their journey, their tours with Glen Hansard and Villagers, busking and more.
