When Jared Lush was 15, he worked a summer job at Zohreh Erfanian's dental hygiene clinic in Gander. He went on to become a dentist, with Zohreh's support and financial help. Now he's giving back to other students with a scholarship he founded and named after Zohreh's younger brother, who died in a workplace accident in Alberta. Jared dropped by our studio to chat with CBC's Leigh Anne Power.

While graduating and finding a job at the start of a pandemic was stressful, this one young dentist wasted no time deciding to work at a community health center. Inspired by her own heritage, she entered dentistry with a passion to change discrepancies in oral health, especially in minority populations with patient education and compassion. What else has stood out to you as you've worked with this nominee for the Young Dentist of the Year award.  Dr. Cherish Dunshee served her peers at Roseman University by serving as Class President for 3 years, as well as the Study Body President. As a natural leader, she was both loved and respected by her peers and the faculty for her kindness and empathy for everyone. We would like to focus on the type of relationship you have created together and how other young dentists could copy your genius.    A practicing dentist in Provo, Utah, since 1996, cosmetic dentist Dr. Chris Hammond is well known for his talents in both general and cosmetic dentistry. In 1998 the Crown Council (a national group of leading-edge dentists) awarded him America's “Young Dentist of the Year.” His practice has been named Utah County's “Best of the Best” dental practice by the Daily Herald for providing quality dental care in a unique, people-oriented environment. He has recently been nominated by his peers and Woodward/White (an independent research firm) as one of “The Best Dentists in America.” Dr. Harris received his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University before attending the University of Texas Health at San Antonio School of Dentistry where he graduated with honors in his Doctorate in Dental Surgery program. “As a third-generation dentist, dentistry has always been a major part of my life. My grandfather (general dentist) and my father (oral surgeon) showed me what it meant to serve others and sacrifice for those in our community. Dr. Allison Lesko and her family had always dreamed about living in Colorado, so starting a practice in Fort Collins was a perfect fit for her. Growing up in Olathe, KS, a suburb of Kansas City, she gained a fond love for BBQ and Royals Baseball. She attended Kansas State University and graduated with honors in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While at K-State, she was a coxswain for the Kansas State Rowing Association men's crew team. Dr. Lesko earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from UMKC School of Dentistry in 2007 and completed a General Practice Residency at Truman Medical Center in 2008 which further expanded her clinical skill set. Following her residency program, Dr. Lesko joined a progressive dental office in Salina, Kansas where she practiced for 8 years. Continued education and patient comfort are passions of Dr. Lesko's. She strives to provide exceptional dentistry while creating a calming and welcoming environment. She is committed to completing at least 100 hours of dental continuing education each year and focuses primarily on regenerative procedures such as grafting, implants, cosmetics and advanced sedation techniques. Dr. Stephen L. Beveridge is a 3rd generation dentist and a graduate of Los Gatos High School in 1977. He then graduated from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, with a double major in Biology and Economics/Business. He met his wife, Lori, at Westmont and they were married in Santa Barbara. They moved to Chicago in 1984, and Dr. Beveridge graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1988. They returned to their home state of California to practice with his father, Dr. Leigh, for 3 years as well as start his dental practice in Auburn, CA for 2 years. He returned to San Jose and has practiced in South San Jose since 1993. He has 3 children: Erin, Aimee, and Stephen. Stephen joined Crown Council in 1998 and over the past 23 years been an internal part in both leadership and example to the community.  South San Jose Family Dentistry has raise over $92,000 for Smiles for Life and continues to play a huge part in the growth of the Crown Council community.   Dr. Erin Beveridge Cabuling grew up in Los Gatos and was a graduate of Los Gatos High School in 2007. She then attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara followed by Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is excited to be back in the area practicing dentistry and serving the community. When she is out of the office she enjoys spending time at the gym, hiking, and cooking with family and friends. She has been licensed in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and she is oral sedation certified in Texas. Dr. Canada completed a one-year general practice residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Hermann Hospital, The University of Texas School of Dentistry, Texas Institute of Research and Rehabilitation and Ben Taub Hospital in 1990 where she learned how to treat the medically compromised patient. She then completed a one-year cosmetic dentistry fellowship with Realty Publishing and Esthetic Dental Professionals in 1991. She has been in private solo practice since 1995. In 1995, she was named Young Dentist of the Year and in 2009 Dentist of the Year by the Ninth District Dental Society where she was past president. She was nominated for the Texas Dentist of the Year in 2009 and for many years has been named a Texas Super Dentist and a Houston Top Dentist along with several other national awards. Dr. Canada is a Fellow of the American and the International College of Dentists and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity where she is a national officer. She is also very involved with the Seattle Study Club in Houston, the Westside Study Club, the Ninth District Dental Society, the Greater Houston Dental Society, the Texas Dental Association, and Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. She is a mentor to many past, present and future dental students as well. Dr. Canada's hobbies include hiking, travel, Creative Memories scrapbooking, jewelry making, crafts, Girl Scouts, and spending time with her beloved daughter and family.
