Summary Welcome to our 500th episode! To celebrate this milestone, Andy talks with Steve Brown, AI futurist, keynote speaker, and author of The AI Ultimatum: Preparing for a World of Intelligent Machines and Radical Transformation. Steve brings a rare perspective shaped by years at Intel and Google DeepMind, and today helps organizations navigate two vital questions: what future do you want to build with AI, and what future do you want to avoid? They explore why waiting isn't actually the safe option it feels like, how to think about the different "flavors" of AI beyond just generative tools, and what it really means to orchestrate humans, AI agents, and robots together in the workplace. Steve introduces three types of AI agents—offload, elevate, and extend—and explains the crucial difference between automating tasks and truly transforming how work gets done. You'll also hear his candid take on the fear of being replaced and why doubling down on your humanity is the smartest career move you can make right now. If you're looking for a practical, empowering guide to leading through the AI revolution—without the hype—this episode is for you! Sound Bites "The difference between an AI-enabled or AI-first company and an AI laggard is going to be so great that if you don't get on the train, you may get to the point where you can never catch up." "Your competitors who have embraced AI faster than you are going to be just kicking your butt all over town." "There's a serious cost to inaction in that you can become made irrelevant." "The danger with that is you may automate yourself. It may automate away all of the differentiation you have in your brand and your company." "AI is this sort of amplification technology, and the challenge is to balance cost-cutting and value creation." "Each flavor of AI is useful for solving a different type of business problem." "It feels like a digital employee, right? A digital worker that works for you." "It's taking the suck out of your job." "The real opportunity here, is to transform the way you do work rather than just try and automate away tasks or people." "The workplace of the future is going to be three groups. Humans will still be in the workforce. Great! Go us!" "You won't be replaced by an AI or a robot. You'll be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI better than you do." "Double down on your humanity." "Focus on building the skills that cannot be replaced, or at least won't be replaced by machines anytime soon." "At the end of all of this is going to be lives of abundance, where we have the things that we need." What separates the companies that win from the ones that quietly fade away?Nicolas Darveau-Garneau — former Google Chief Evangelist, multi-time founder, angel investor, and author — joins me to unpack what he's learned after advising over 1,000 CEOs and investing in more than 25 companies.Nicolas breaks down why product-market fit is everything, why most founders misunderstand who their best customers really are, and how a single clear metric can align an entire organization. Drawing on stories from Google, SpaceX, Amazon, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and St. Jude's Children's Hospital, he reveals why speed, clarity, and purpose consistently outperform complexity and brute force. They explore why storytelling is not a talent but a practiced skill, why timing matters as much as the idea itself, and why the ability to “get better at getting better” may be the only sustainable competitive advantage in the age of AI.This conversation is essential listening for founders, operators, investors, and anyone building something that matters. In this episode, you'll learn: - The three traits great founders consistently share- Why 10% of customers often drive 80–90% of profits - Why speed and operational cadence beat perfection - How great companies build systems that improve without the CEO - The biggest mistakes founders make when scaling - Why purpose—not profit alone—sustains founders through hard times Check out Nicolas' new book: Be a Sequoia, Not a Bonsai: The Seven Growth Secrets of the World's Most Successful Companies https://www.amazon.com/Sequoia-Not-Bonsai-Successful-Companies/dp/1400254248Like this episode? It Gets Late Early: Career Tips for Tech Employees in Midlife and Beyond
Ever wondered why AI thinks you need to look younger? In this episode, Gretchen Andrew, a former Google employee turned artist, exposes the disturbing truth about how beauty filters are literally reshaping our faces—and our self-worth.We kick things off with Gretchen's bold pivot from Silicon Valley to the art world, where she's using robots, oil paint, and yes, glitter to reveal what beauty filters actually do to us. Her groundbreaking "FaceTune Portraits" physically apply AI beauty standards to paintings, creating violent scars and marks that show the hidden damage these "harmless" filters inflict on our identities.Gretchen breaks down the dirty secret of AI training data—how algorithms learn beauty from the most biased corners of the internet and create a feedback loop that makes everyone chase the same impossible standard. Even Miss Universe contestants aren't "good enough" for AI filters, and men in their 50s are rescheduling meetings just to use Zoom's "touch up my appearance" feature! From Hollywood actresses getting the same face-altering procedures to look good on small screens, to the shocking reality that social media may have incentivized us to provide facial recognition data for free, this conversation will change how you see every filter, every app, and every "enhanced" photo you encounter.Whether you're tired of the algorithmic beauty trap or just want to understand why everyone's starting to look the same, this episode is essential listening. Gretchen's insights will make you question everything about digital beauty—and maybe even inspire you to embrace what makes you uniquely human.“The question is: Do you want to look old and like yourself, or do you want to look like everybody else and look younger?” ~ Gretchen AndrewIn This Episode:-Leaving Silicon Valley for art-AI vs. beauty standards-The homogenization of beauty-Gretchen's partnership with Andreessen Horowitz-The real story behind AI beauty filters-Ageism in the art and tech world-How Gretchen uses social media for her workAnd much more!Resources:-Free Guide to LinkedIn Job Hunting for the 40+ Crew - https://www.itgetslateearly.com/job-guideConnect with Gretchen Andrew:-Website: https://www.gretchenandrew.com/-LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gretchen-andrew/-Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gretchenandrew/Connect with Maureen Clough:-LinkedIn: maureenwclough - https://www.linkedin.com/in/maureenwclough/-Website: itgetslateearly.com - https://www.itgetslateearly.com/-Instagram: @itgetslateearly - https://www.instagram.com/itgetslateearly/-YouTube:

Jenny Wood is a former Google executive who ran a large operations team that helped drive billions of advertising revenue a year. And she also created one of the largest career development programs in Google's history. Jenny is also the author of the book, Wild Courage. In this episode we discuss the following: I love Jenny's advice to be shameless: have the courage to stand behind our efforts and abilities. And go after what we want. What a great example of shamelessness when Jenny chased her husband-to-be off the subway to give him her business card. In the workplace, it's hard to be noticed if we don't stand out. But many of us default to not self-promoting enough. Yet as a manager at Google, Jenny loved getting a shameless Monday morning email from a small number of her direct reports who told her what they had accomplished and what they were going to do next. Former Google CEO and Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt walked back comments he made about work-life balance and remote-work policies at Google, a U.S. District Judge says he will issue an order forcing Google to give Android users more ways to download apps, and, the FTC has finalized rules on its crackdown on fabricated reviews andContinue reading "Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt Walked Back Comments About Remote Work Policies At Google – DTH"
Hey Strangers, #google #ai #art Former Google CEO and chairman Eric Schmidt has made headlines for saying that Google was blindsided by the early the rise of ChatGPT because its employees decided that “working from home was more important than winning.” The comment was made in front of Stanford students during a recent interview, video of which was removed from the university's YouTube channel after Schmidt's gaffe was widely picked up by the press. I managed to watch most of Schmidt's chat with Stanford's Erik Brynjolfsson before it was taken down, however, and something else he said stands out. (You can still read the full transcript here.) While talking about a future world in which AI agents can do complex tasks on behalf of humans, Schmidt says: If TikTok is banned, here's what I propose each and every one of you do: Say to your LLM the following: “Make me a copy of TikTok, steal all the users, steal all the music, put my preferences in it, produce this program in the next 30 seconds, release it, and in one hour, if it's not viral, do something different along the same lines.” That's the command. Boom, boom, boom, boom. A bit later, Schmidt returns to his TikTok example and says: So, in the example that I gave of the TikTok competitor — and by the way, I was not arguing that you should illegally steal everybody's music — what you would do if you're a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, which hopefully all of you will be, is if it took off, then you'd hire a whole bunch of lawyers to go clean the mess up, right? But if nobody uses your product, it doesn't matter that you stole all the content. And do not quote me. ======================================= My other podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKpvBEElSl1dD72Y5gtepkw ************************************************** Something Strange https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRjVc2TZqN4&t=4s ************************************************** article links: https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/14/24220658/google-eric-schmidt-stanford-talk-ai-startups-openai ====================================== Today is for push-ups and Programming and I am all done doing push-ups Discord https://discord.gg/MYvNgYYFxq TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@strangestcoder Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe9xwdRW2D7RYwlp6pRGOvQ?sub_confirmation=1 Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/CodingWithStrangers Twitter https://twitter.com/strangestcoder merch Support CodingWithStrangers IRL by purchasing some merch.
