One thing I have learned in my 20 years of experience, is Athletes and Parents need each other. This isn't just about parents paying for sports, fees, training, etc. It's about the relationship between the two. That can be mom and dad, mom, or just dad, that is irrelevant. This is about parents providing their children with all of the resources they need to be successful. Then on the other hand it's about athletes appreciating what their parents have sacrificed to make sure they have everything they need. So parents, share this episode with your student-athletes and athletes share this with your teammates. That's how we all get better! Hosts Atoya Burleson and Tia Avril are working extra hard this week by recording and re-recording the insideLINES podcast! Atoya and Tia jump right to this week's “Hot Takes,” because they have a special guest that has some thoughts on the topic. That special guest is none other than Atoya's husband, Nate Burleson. Tia starts it off laying the topic out…and that topic is the drama between the hosts of the I am Athlete Podcast and The Pivot Podcast. I Am Athlete Podcast was started by veteran NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall alongside retired NFL stars Fred Taylor, Channing Crowder and Ryan Clark (then Reggie Wayne). The podcast was an instant success, however, we later found out that the original hosts had a disagreement regarding ownership of the highly successful show. According to Brandon, the hosts passed on the opportunity to become founding investors, and the disagreement arose when he was asked to extend the initial 25% offering despite a change in evaluation and ownership. In November 2021, Fred, Channing, and Ryan launched the highly successful The Pivot Podcast. After a neverending onslaught of back and forth disparaging remarks between the former co-hosts, Nate, Atoya and Tia get into it and explore all the sides of the issue with some pretty interesting takes. After Hot Takes, the ladies welcome Letha Atwater onto the pod! Letha, wife of Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Atwater (Denver Broncos), is a licensed professional and addiction counselor. The ladies chat with her about how she got into mental health counseling, what she feels the NFL needs to do to better support the mental health of their players, and how she handled a pivoting from her original dream of being a medical doctor to a full time caretaker for her family. Letha also shares her thoughts on the use of cannabis by professional players and the pressures children of athletes face. And, that's the show! Be sure to follow, rate and review the podcast on the Apple Podcast and Spotify apps. It really helps us out! Thanks so much for listening and supporting our show! “Say yes to opportunities that maybe you don't feel you're ready for because other people might see something you don't see in yourself.” Anne O'Neil first got into sports by playing soccer on an all-boys team and proving she could compete with the best of them. Shortly after, she discovered her love of basketball and became one of the best high school athletes in the country, recruited by top coaches like the legendary Pat Summit. Anne played Division I college basketball and was an athletic and academic All-American at Iowa State. After leading the nation in 3-point shooting, she was invited to compete in the infamous ESPN 3-Point shooting contest. After college, she was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs and one of the highlights of her WNBA career was having the opportunity to run up and down the court at Madison Square Garden. Following her incredible athletic career, she took her sports knowledge to TV and became a color commentator for Fox Sports. Now, Anne is a mindset and leadership coach working with teams and executives to develop strategic game plans and goals, and has studied with some of the top mindset gurus in the country. She is also the host and producer of the "Get Busy Livin'" podcast. In this episode, Anne talks about her athletic career and what it takes to compete at that level. She also offers tips and advice for setting goals and developing a strong mindset to get you through the ups and downs in life, pursuing a career in sports broadcasting and how to cultivate that healthy, happy life you're seeking. Do you ever feel less respected as a female athlete compared to the male athletes? So many times in the past, male coaches have greeted me with a “hey sweetie” or “honey.” I'll be completely honest with you, that has rubbed me the wrong way. Those dainty, feminine words trigger insecurity and smallness that roots from a fear of not being worthy of working a job in a male-dominated area. In times like these, I look to the scripture and find where Paul encouraged Timothy to not let people look down on him because he was young, but instead, be a believer and represent with your life. What I realized was that I had to own up to my insecurities. Once I did that, I learned how to resolve these situations with maturity and now I'm paving the way for female coaches that will come after me. In this episode you will hear: Knowing who you are as a coach Dealing with your insecurities Walking in maturity Leading by example For all things mentioned in this episode visit click HERE.
