BONUS: Achieving Agility and Exploring the Product Owner's Impact in DevOps with Zhenya Balyasin We start this episode by highlighting the challenges that Product Owners (POs) face when working with DevOps teams. Zhenya explains that DevOps work is unique and comes with a variety of incoming tasks and requests on a daily basis. Additionally, DevOps teams also require time to invest in improving their operations, which adds to the workload. The constant interruptions and chaotic nature of the work make it challenging for the PO to manage effectively. Unlike traditional backlogs where POs are used to prioritize tasks, in DevOps teams, the backlog may not always be the main focus. Zhenya identifies a common anti-pattern where DevOps teams have a strong willingness to help others, which can further complicate the role of the PO. From Chaos to Clarity: Addressing Anti-Patterns in DevOps Workflows Zhenya identifies several common anti-patterns that she has observed in DevOps teams. One anti-pattern is the resistance from the team to have their work organized by the Product Owner (PO) when they were already functioning without that role. Another anti-pattern is the team's excessive focus on maintenance tasks rather than prioritizing the development of the product itself. The lack of clarity in identifying the products among the various types of work received is also a common anti-pattern. Zhenya emphasizes the importance of defining the product or service for the teams and establishing a clear roadmap. She suggests discussing the product development process and the role it plays within the team. It is crucial to involve the team in these discussions rather than imposing processes on them without consultation. Zhenya also highlights the need for effective communication and collaboration with the team. Merely presenting a process without prior discussion and understanding of the team's dynamics and self-identity can lead to resistance. Instead, she recommends discussing process-related matters with the team beforehand. Customer-Centric DevOps: How the PO Role Revolutionized a DevOps' Team In this segment, Zhenya discusses how she changed her own work and the dynamics of the team after the Product Owner (PO) role was introduced to the DevOps team. She initially encountered an anti-pattern where the team seemed resistant to accepting the perspective and needs of the customers. To address this challenge, Zhenya offers a couple of tips. First, she suggests initiating a discussion within the team to clarify who the customer is and how they are being served. This helps align the team's understanding and focus on meeting customer needs. Additionally, Zhenya recommends conducting interviews with customer teams or the company itself. These interviews provide valuable insights and highlight the differences in expectations between the DevOps team and the customer's requirements. By understanding these differences, the team can adjust their approach and ensure their work aligns with the customer's needs. By implementing these tips, Zhenya was able to foster a better understanding of the customer's viewpoint within the team, leading to improved collaboration and a more customer-centric approach to their work. People-Centric Change: Zhenya's Key Insights for Driving Transformation in Teams Zhenya shares her approach to facilitating change within the team. She emphasizes the importance of change management and highlights the Unfreeze-Change-Refreeze model. Zhenya advises breaking down the steps of change into smaller, manageable tasks while consistently communicating the value behind each step. She encourages the use of data to measure progress and guide decision-making. Additionally, Zhenya underscores the significance of focusing on the people involved in the change process. She suggests investing time in conversations to understand individual perspectives and values. Zhenya also recommends introducing the Product Owner (PO) role gradually, addressing questions and concerns, and being mindful of the potential impact of introducing multiple changes simultaneously. Building strong relationships with the team is seen as essential in driving successful change. Preparing for Change: How Scrum Masters Can Assist Product Owners in DevOps teams In this segment, Zhenya discusses the support she expects from Scrum Masters in helping Product Owners in similar situations. She advises Scrum Masters to proactively prepare the team for the upcoming changes even before the PO joins the team. Zhenya suggests working collaboratively with the PO, Scrum Master / Agile Coach, and team lead to define a clear strategy for the team. She highlights that the PO can also assist the Scrum Master/Agile Coach in this process by providing inputs such as the roadmap, OKRs (Objectives and Key Results), and defining the team's mission. Zhenya emphasizes the importance of redefining the team's identity to facilitate and embrace the desired change. She encourages close collaboration between the Scrum Master/Agile coach, PO, and team lead to drive successful transformation. Enhance Your Change Management Skills: Zhenya's Top Resource Picks Zhenya recommends further reading and resources related to the topic of change management. She mentions the Lewin Change Management model as a valuable resource to explore. Additionally, Zhenya suggests subscribing to the newsletter of Rob Lambert from Cultivated Management, who provides insightful content and potentially offers workshops on the subject. Another newsletter recommendation is Patrick Kua's level up newsletter. In this episode, Sasha and Stella sit down with Zhenya Abbruzzese, a healthcare researcher, analyst, and the author of several widely read peer-reviewed publications about pediatric gender medicine. Zhenya Abbruzzese papers include “The Myth of Reliable Research in Pediatric Gender Medicine,” “Reconsidering Informed Consent for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults,” and most recently, “Current Concerns About Gender-Affirming Therapy in Adolescents.” She works with several healthcare organizations, including the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM), an international non-profit organization that aims to raise the bar of the quality of evidence in gender medicine, with a specific focus on children and young people. Previously, Zhenya led analytics efforts for a major insurer to identify low-value care and overuse of invasive and non-beneficial interventions. She also developed and led a venture-backed healthcare startup to help patients with medically-unexplained symptoms and health anxiety. A lifelong Democrat and supporter of progressive causes, Zhenya became alarmed when she saw the civil rights argument misused to justify the rapid proliferation and administration of highly invasive “gender-affirming” interventions to children and adolescents despite quality evidence supporting their use. During their conversation, Zhenya, Stella, and Sasha explore the origins of the Dutch Protocol and dive deep into Zhenya's insights into pediatric gender medicine, as well as her experience working with insurance companies. Zhenya takes great care to point out that in addition to considering the cultural components impacting the current gender discourse, it's necessary to explore the psychological piece as well. But in addition to that, the involvement of medical organizations like the APA and the American healthcare establishment as a whole all play key roles not only in what is happening in gender medicine but how it's happening to such extremes.Links:SEGM:https://segm.org/ Papers by Zhenya AbbruzzeseThe Myth of Reliable Research in Pediatric Gender MedicineReconsidering Informed Consent for Children, Adolescents, and Young AdultsCurrent Concerns About Gender-Affirming Therapy in AdolescentsMethodological Bias (funny meme):https://www.reddit.com/r/mathmemes/comments/uoc3zq/interesting_survey/ If you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:The Dutch Studies PlaylistWe have done a number of episodes about the "Dutch Protocol" which precipitated the surge in youth gender transition.

The rise and fall of Zhenya Zvetnenko is another cautionary tale in WA's long history of entrepreneurs who've flown too close to the sun, and got burnt. You've got Alan Bond and the WA Inc debacle, Laurie Connell, and on a much lower scale… Sam Barnett. These were all businessmen who got rich fast, and were only too happy to show off their wealth. But, behind all the glitz and glamour was another side - a side they hid from the public. And that side was not all lamborghinis and private jets. It involved jilted investors - or in Zhenya's case - innocent people who were scammed, and millions of dollars were lost. Authorities estimate hundreds of millions of dollars were illegally pocketed. on the back of Zhenya's auto-subscription mobile phone scam that charged unwitting customers $10 a month for SMS messages they didn't ask for, and didn't know about. And all the while this was happening, Zhenya was showboating around Perth in his fancy cars, and posing for photos in his big mansion. In hindsight, it had all the hallmarks of every other dodgy operator who tried so hard to look successful, when really they were just a crook. But now Zhenya sits in an American jail, awaiting the decision of the judge on what punishment he'll receive for crimes. The US prosecutors want him behind bars for nine years. Now, none of this is going to stop the next Zhenya from dominating the Perth social scene. For whatever reason, we just love to put these people up on a pedastal. But maybe looking at the story of Zhenya will help us spot the next big WA scumbag. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Finally, before Segment, Zhenya led a 100-person team at Dropbox across numerous different functional areas. In Today's Episode with Zhenya Loginov You Will Learn: 1.) What mistakes did they make? 2.) The Sales Playbook: What, Why and How: What does "the sales playbook mean to Zhenya? Does the founder need to be the one to create the sales playbook? What are the signs that the founders needs to bring in their first sales hire? Should this sales hire be a sales leader or more junior sales rep? Is is possible to run a PLG and enterprise sales motion at the same time in the early days of the company? What do many founders misunderstand when contemplating adopting an enterprise sales strategy? 3.) Hiring the Team: How does Zhenya structure the interview process for new sales hires? Zhenya spends 5 hours with each candidate, what does he look to get out of each meeting? How does Zhenya break down the criteria for what he wants to see? What are some examples of this? How does Zhenya test to determine if the candidate has these criteria? What questions does he find to be most revealing? Why does Zhenya find case studies to not be useful? How does Zhenya use interview panels to ensure he makes the right hiring decision? Who is on the panel? At what stage do they meet the candidate? How does Zhenya like to use the panel? 4.) Laying the Groundwork: The Onboarding Process: What is the right way to structure the onboarding process for all new sales hires? What are some early signs that a new sales hire is not working? What can sales leaders do to ensure new reps get "early wins" on the board? What can leadership do to ensure the sales team has good cross-functional communication across the org? What works? What does not work? What are some of the biggest challenges of running a remote sales team?
