A recent trip to Walton Heath afforded me an opportunity to meet with Philip Truett at his home at Walton on the Hill. Philip recently co-authored a biography on William Herbert Fowler, entitled 'A Matter of Course'. The book paints a brilliant picture of a life well lived, not without a modicum of drama. Fowler by all accounts was a by-product of his time and social standing, who undoubteldy left an indelible mark on golf both in the UK and the USA. We mainly stay on topic or at the very least always return to the vicinity of where we meandered away from it.... please enjoy the chat, it was great fun to put it together for our collective enjoyment, engaging with someone as knowledgable as Philip has been a real treat. Special Guest: Philip Truett.

Looking at Acts 1:1-11, Pastor Johanan brings us the first sermon in the series, 'A Matter of Time'. One of the most-asked question, is “When?” When will my longings be fulfilled? When will God come through for me? When does God intend for me to take action? Pastor Johanan leads us to how we can discern God's timing and will for us!
Irvin Yalom is an existential psychiatrist and pioneer of humanistic psychology, with a career spanning 60 years as an educator, writer, and psychotherapist. An expert on grief, the emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford University spent 2019 writing 'A Matter of Death and Life' with his wife, Marylin, as each described their perspective on her terminal illness. Marylin died in November 2019, ending their 73-year relationship. In this episode of Being Human, counsellor and Star columnist, Sandy Clarke, talks to Irvin Yalom about his relationship with Marylin and their journey together through her illness. They also discuss how Irvin's grief came to inform his work with clients, and Irvin shares his thoughts, reflecting on 90 years of life, on what really matters in the end. With the pandemic hopefully hitting a turning point, we thought it would be fitting to finish season one with someone who was at the epicentre of the crisis. Kelly Critcher volunteered to work in the high dependency unit in one of the worst-hit hospitals in the UK at the height of the crisis. Her first-hand experience is at times distressing, but also uplifting and an incredible story of strength and altruism during one of the most difficult periods in living memory. We hope you enjoy the episode and you can read Kelly's book 'A Matter of Life and Death: Courage, compassion and the fight against coronavirus - a palliative care nurse's story' online or in all good book stores. Guest artist MILLY PECK joins me to chat about her work via Alan Ayckbourn's play 'Taking Steps - A Farce'. Published in 1981 by Haydonning Ltd and first performed at Stephen Joseph Theatre in 1979, the story revolves around a Victorian manor house in faltering disrepair. While the characters upstairs and downstairs their way around three storeys, the play is actually performed on only one floor so that various scenes interact simultaneously. It's then a cacophony of mishaps, misunderstandings and misdirections. Elizabeth wants to leave Roland. Roland wants to buy this tremendous house from Leslie for Elizabeth. Mark wants to marry Kitty. Kitty wants to leave Mark. Tristram, the junior solicitor, is just utterly confused about what's happening and where and by whom, and if all those strange noises are thanks to a resident ghost. Milly and I go on to discuss her solo exhibitions, most recently at Vitrine Gallery in Basel, her upcoming residency at British School at Rome and all the work inbetween. Mentions go to foley sound production, the physicality of the stage, playing with dimensions, scale, collage, flattening, inflating, puppeteers, backstage antics, confusing performance with reality, implicating the audience, dark elements shrouded in comedy, hands in gloves, hand in black and hands holding celery. Me and Ted argue, for the third week in a row of this format, over who loves this majestic, magical 1946 movie more — him or me? Am I able to convince a viewer over with all the technical and modern aspects? Or does Ted convince one about how modern and beloved this movie should be? Do you, as a film viewer, want to join our cult of the Powell/Pressburger lovers, a fanclub that includes acolytes such as Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese? Who gives a crap — JUST WATCH THIS MOVIE, YOU'LL BE CONVERTED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER(!). Then, come back and listen to this packed, breathless episode.
Ashley Bloomfield is warning community transmission of Covid-19 in New Zealand is inevitable, as the authorities try to break Kiwis out of complacency around the virus. Shops, restaurants and schools across the country are being asked to redouble their efforts to display QR codes for the Covid tracer app. Despite over 600,000 kiwis registering for the app, regular use has been slow to catch on. It seems without a threat of Covid-19 in New Zealand, that isn't about to change. Dr Bloomfield is also advising Kiwis to stock up on masks, saying people will be asked to use them in enclosed spaces at Alert Level 2 and mask-wearing could be compulsory at Alert Level 3.
We present another two plays from Exeter Drama Company. First we go back to the louche Vienna of Sigmund Freud and Hoffman's Tales with Ferenc Molnar's 'A Matter of Husbands' translated by Benjamin Blazer. This is followed by an anonymous play 'Three's Never a Crowd'

We continue our series of Star Trek random rewatches as we reach Star Trek The Next Generation. Is it a good or bad thing that of all episode we randomly drew this one? Does the premise of one story told from multiple perspectives work as well on screen as it may have on paper? Does the premise of Riker being accused of rape and murder work at all? Does this episode suffer from being sandwiched in between two of the all time greats? Do we really believe Riker is as innocent as his version of the story tells? Why can't Troi do the only job she was brought along to do? Why are we both happy and sad about being left with unanswered questions? It's time to boldly download what nobody has ever downloaded before as our Star Trek series continues on.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This week Libby Purves is joined by Mary Wilson, Larry Lamb, Siza Mtimbiri and Arthur Jeffes. Mary Wilson is the singer and a founding member of sixties group The Supremes. On the legendary Motown record label, they were able to cross racial boundaries to become one of the most successful musical acts of all time - the only group to have five consecutive number one hits. She's now an author, motivational speaker, and an international spokeswoman for the 'Humpty Dumpty Institute', a humanitarian organisation in which she speaks against landmines. She is currently touring the UK. Actor Larry Lamb is probably best known for his roles in two of the UK's best-loved television series as the villain Archie Mitchell in 'Eastenders' and as loveable dad Mick in 'Gavin and Stacey'. In his memoir, 'Mummy's Boy' he looks back at his own difficult relationship with his father, and how that in turn shaped his own close relationship with his son, George. 'Mummy's Boy' is published by Hodder. Siza Mtimbiri was brought up in one of the poorest parts of Zimbabwe, one of seven siblings. His family was devastated by HIV/AIDS. Today he is a PhD student at Cambridge University and a Gates Scholar. He has founded a charity called 'Hope Academy and Medical Center' that will bring education and health care to communities in rural Zimbabwe. Arthur Jeffes' father Simon founded the Penguin Cafe Orchestra in the seventies but died in 1997 of a brain tumour. At that point the group stopped playing completely but after a series of reunion concerts at the Union Chapel in 2007, to mark ten years since his death, Arthur decided to get a group of musicians together to play the music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, plus his own, new compositions. This month they release their first album, 'A Matter of Life' and in March the label re-released two Penguin Cafe Orchestra albums - 'Union Cafe' and 'Concert Program'.
