So when did The British Empire begin? Well, the idea of it was probably much earlier than you think and in this episode Charlie Higson is going to be asking questions about a time in English history when English monarchs seriously started looking at colonising other nations. And to assist Charlie in his quest, he's invited James Hawes back on the show. James is the author of The Shortest History of England and as well as looking at Empire, he also explains how England has been - and in many ways still is - split between a French elite and an English man in the street. Joker: Folie a Deux, the long awaited and much discussed follow up to 2019's surprise hit Joker, finally hit theaters last weekend and the numbers across the board, critically and financially, leave something to be desired. The $200 million-budgeted, psychological thriller/musical/courtroom drama sequel debuted to just $37 million domestically, a soft bow certainly impacted by poor critical reviews and a D CinemaScore from audiences – a record worst for the comic book film genre. While promoting his new film We Live In Time via an interview with Esquire, Andrew Garfield spoke on his willingness to reprise his role as The Amazing Spider-Man, saying quote, “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it's additive to the culture, if there's a great concept or something that hasn't been done before that's unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I'm joyful in return.” Last week The Hollywood Reporter released an editorial analysis of the state of the Star Wars franchise after being bought by Disney 12 years ago. The report crunched and discussed numbers including budgets, revenues, critical and audience reviews, viewership, and streaming subscriptions, among other verticals for all the projects beginning with The Force Awakens through The Acolyte. The latest buzz from the rumor mill via The Production List, Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena appears to be attached to Marvel Studios Nova series. While it's still far from official casting, if true, the move could have implications for Jaime Reyes' as-of-yet unclear future in James Gunn's DCU. Spyglass has set the release date for Scream VII as Feb 27, 2026, with Neve Campbell officially reprising her role and franchise creator Kevin Williamson returning as director. Paramount is developing a live-action/CG Rugrats film, directed by Jason Moore of Pitch Perfect, with a script by SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney has confirmed that the show will be shooting a crossover episode with the cast of Abbott Elementary, which also takes place in Philadelphia. James Hawes, an established TV creator who most recently directed a string of episodes of the Gary Oldman spy series Slow Horses, has been tapped to helm the first two episodes of Lanterns for Max. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Katy O'Brian, the rising actress who gained notice with Love Lies Bleeding, is joining Glen Powell in The Running Man, Paramount's adaptation of the Stephen King novel Will Smith is set to reunite with director Michael Bay for the first time in 30 years for a new Netflix action movie titled Fast and Loose. The film follows a man who wakes up in Mexico with no memory and discovers he has been living a double life as both a CIA agent and a crime lord. Netflix has canceled the Jeff Goldblum led series Kaos after one season. Prey star Amber Midthunder has joined the second season of AppleTV+'s monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The Mindy Kaling-led animated Scooby Doo spin off Velma has been canceled by Max after two seasons. Insider Jeff Sneider is adding another name to the list of potential actors to play John Stewart in the upcoming DC series Lanterns, reporting that 21 Bridges actor Stephen James has emerged as the front runner. Christopher Nolan's next film with Universal now has a release date of July 17th, 2026 with Matt Damon in early talks to star.

To mark the release of the Warner Brothers motion picture 'One Life' (starring Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Flynn), Alex Maws sits down with the film's director, James Hawes, to discuss the story of Sir Nicholas Winton and how he went about bringing it to the big screen.About the film:ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky' Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, ‘That's Life', surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

What can art tell us about a country's history? Well, a lot! In today's episode, Dan is joined by Art Historian Temi Odumosu and popular historian James Hawes to discuss the cultural works they think reveal something vital about the history of Britain.James enthuses about the Staffordshire Hoard- the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found and what it tells us about the tumultuous political situation of the 6th century. Meanwhile, Temi explains the impact of the autobiography 'The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano the African' on the abolitionist movement in 18th century Britain. It lay the foundations for new genres of literature and new ways of understanding the experiences of enslaved people. Both Temi and James appear in the new BBC series 'Art That Made Us' that through 1500 years and eight dramatic turning points presents an alternative history of the British Isles, told through art.James' accompanying book to the series is called 'Brilliant Isles'.If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe today!
