The Down's Syndrome Scotland Show Garden, inspired by a young Scottish boy called Liam, has been designed by Chelsea newcomers, Duncan Hall and Nick Burton of Burton Hall Garden Design, who wanted to design a Show Garden for Down's Syndrome Scotland to help break some of the barriers and stigmas faced by people who have Down's syndrome, whilst celebrating their many positive qualities. In this episode, we chat with the garden designers about the garden ahead of this year's RHS Chelsea Show, and with Eddie McConnell, CEO of Down's Syndrome Scotland on the difference this garden will make to the conversations around Down's syndrome, and on the benefits it will bring in its relocation back to Scotland after the show.

A special report from RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. Ali was incredibly fortunate to be invited into one of the Show Gardens to interview the designers. What a surreal experience to be recording the very talented Dido Milne and Sophie Parmenter in the garden they designed for The National Autistic Society. An enveloping, safe and calm garden in the midst of a bustling show. Upon stepping into the garden, this girl from the countryside who prefers peace and quiet, was completely rejuvinated. This garden will be relocated to a National Autistic Society site at Catrine Bank in Scotland, where, I am certain, many clients will benefit greatly.Web links below Su Hoskin is back to talk about the Hāwea Food Forest - Community Food Forests are buzzing with activity and camaraderie, and participants get to enjoy the fruits of their labour, it's a win - win.Dandelion root tea is the flavour of the day - actually it's more a coffee substitute, will Jen like this one??Barren period until 2nd June then its Root crops 3rd & 4th… Keep planting bulbs for Spring colour. The winter crops are being harvested now, the last of the pumpkins, Jerusalem Artichokes and NZ Yams. David Hurrion - Show gardens and exotic plants - 15 June 2023
Lucy Bravington is the award winning designer behind the Liz Earle Beauty Co.'s Botanical Show Garden at BBC Gardeners' World Live 2023. The garden will harness the power of plants for feelings of wellbeing, featuring perennial plants to showcase the botanicals included in many Liz Earle Beauty Co. products, such as echinacea, rosemary and lavender. Every day, Liz Earle's ethnobotanist, James Wong, will be on the garden to talk to visitors and share insights into the power of plants. The focal point of the garden is a sculpture inspired by brand's coastal home and the Fibonacci spiral which represents the efficacious nature of Liz Earle Beauty Co. products.
What is that on the horizon - well, it's Spring of course. The klaxon for warmer, longer days is finally sounding and Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy are looking forward to it immensely. Spring is a wonderful time of year but also incredibly busy for all professional gardeners up and down the country as the gardens come alive with colour, texture and the occasional weed! Join them both as they navigate this beautiful time of year, bringing you the sights and sounds of Stonelands and East Donyland, as well as their home gardens and beyond. It's the highlight of the horticultural calendar, as the Talkings Heads pair head to the big smoke of London for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The show is always a talking point for any garden year, sometimes controversial, but always a mecca of what the UK and the world can achieve in the horticultural sphere. Gardens embraced a more naturalistic, sustainable theme with the hot topic of 'weeds' bringing much deliberation. The Great Pavilion felt more alive than ever, with a buzz that has been missing for a couple of years - some of the displays, including the exhibit Lucy was involved in building, were magnificent. We also tucked into some good food, admired a fantastic greenhouse and, as with every year, gossiped and chewed the cud with all our garden friends that we might only see in this hub-bub of the horticultural world.Twitter link:Saul @GardeningSaulInstagram link:Lucy @HeadGardenerLCIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Support the show

In this episode I speak with Martin Semken from Semken Landscaping, a construction and maintenance business based in Melbourne which Martin started 35 years ago.Semken Landscaping were the first Australian construction company to build a Show Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show and have also been involved in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show every year since inception, so we discuss both shows in this chat.Martin discusses the value of garden maintenance and why more landscapers should be offering it.I got goosebumps when Martin was talking about the amount of care he has for his apprentices when they start, and how he likes to meet with their parents prior to them starting so that they have an understanding of who their child is working for, what to expect, and so that they can contact him if needed. It's obvious that Martin treats his employees like family, not just the half dozen who literally are family! You can follow along with Martin's work on Instagram @smekenlandscaping You can follow along with the projects we're currently working on via our Instagram page@instyle_gardens@thelandscapingpodcastYou can view each episode on our YouTube channel
In this episode I speak with Dean Herald form Rolling Stone Landscapes. Dean runs his landscape design and construction company in Sydney, and has done so for more than 30 years, starting out on his own before building the business up to a super high end company building some of the best landscapes in the country.Dean shares plenty of tips and advice in this chat, and it's all achievable for any sized business, which I found fascinating. Simple things such as turning up on time make you stand out from the majority of businesses, and it's not hard!Dean also mentions why he doesn't charge consultation fees, and shares his processes for staff communication and job tracking. You can follow along with the phenomenal work produced by Dean on Instagram @rollingstonelandscapes and you can see the 2011 Show Garden we discuss at Rollingstonelandscapes.com . Garden Shows are full of Show Gardens but should these really be called gardens? Are they gardens and if not why not. The trouble though is the RHS, Experts and the Media, extol the virtues of these displays as 'gardens' ; which dupes the non-gardening public into believing these can and should be copied. In this episode Rachel discusses why non-expert garden owners get duped into possibly wasting money by the very people who are supposed to be helping them. And it's all because it's called a garden....Read more at PlantPlots.comSupport the show (https://www.ko-fi.com/theplottingshed)

With thanks to CED Natural Stone, on this episode Peter Donegan speaks with Designer Kate Gould and Keith Chapman who made the Greenfingers Charity Gardenat RHS Chelsea 2019. According to The RHS: Even experienced Chelsea designers face unexpected challenges, and for Kate Gould, it was creating a completely accessible garden. “I didn’t think it would, but it’s definitely changed the way I think about garden design,” said Kate, ahead of her appearance at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. “It’s made me appreciate accessibility more – you can’t put a price on being able to go outside and feel the wind on your face and look up at the trees.” Sponsored by Greenfingers, a charity dedicated to supporting children in hospices through the creation of gardens, the Show Garden will be split on two levels, with a lift for access to the top floor. “This is a garden for times you come together as a family,” said Kate, “making memories in a beautiful, outdoor space.” The Sodshow is available every week in iTunes, spotify and all good podcast stores. Show Gardens are amazing - but don't forget they are just that a show. It's easy to be seduced by the gardens on show at places like the RHS flowers show at Chelsea, Hampton Court and around the UK. These gardens showcase the best and most avant garde designs, they inspire us to get into our own gardens and transform them, but are these gardens really aspirational? Can the ordinary gardener really take inspiration from these gardens and try to copy them at home, or should we be looking for inspiration elsewhere?Support the show (https://www.ko-fi.com/theplottingshed)

Show gardens are probably the best way for people to get great ideas on how to bling up their outdoor spaces. And a touch of je ne sais quois is on offer in this year's 7 French inspired spaces. Celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance, students under the tutelage of master designer Mike Rickhoff have encapsulated various aspects of French joie de vivre. From the rolling lavender fields, to pavement cafes around a town square and contemporary rooftop living, there's inspiration aplenty. The gardens are on show until the end of May, so plenty of time to visit them. And if you aren't able to, we discuss ways to bring that special esprit into your backyard To share in Mel's adventures, visit MelsTreasures.co.za

Four finalists under the age of 28 will be announced on 16th March, who will be put in pairs to create two different Show Gardens designed by the television gardening personality. The blueprints will incorporate all aspects of landscaping and test the next generation landscapers to display a wide variety of skills to the utmost precision. The two teams will have the same demanding timeframe as the professional Show Garden designers and contractors at BBC Gardeners’ World Live but also the added pressure of being assessed by World Skills UK judges, to millimetre tolerances. The winning pair will be announced on Wednesday 13th June, the day before the show opens to the public, where both gardens will be on show at the NEC to ticketholders, along with a host of other show gardens, extensive floral marquee, experts and hundreds of exhibitors.

Designed by Owen Morgan, Mosaic Landscape Design Every Little Helps Show Garden, BBC Gardeners' World LiveTesco return to BBC Gardeners' World Live with a Show Garden for the second year running. For 2018, the design focuses on a family garden which provides spaces and activities for all ages without compromising on luxury and design. The garden is a space designed to engage visitors with ideas and inspiration for their own gardens. The multi-faceted design includes an informal lounge area, raised pond, Mediterranean inspired border, artificial lawn play area, den-making and secret garden within a wildlife area, outdoor dining area, outdoor kitchen/bar room and edible beds. The main focus of planting within garden will be a strong structural form of hedging, trees and shrubs, which give the space year round usability. This will be supported with a profusion of seasonal planting in pots and containers. The interactive nature of the garden will be supported by demonstrations and masterclasses which take place from the garden during the Show, including a mix of culinary and horticultural sessions. Masterclass timetable to follow.

Spirit of Cornwall was jointly co-designed by them and the rest of the team with Stuart leading the project through to its inception. One of the Show Gardens to be unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show in May this year will be The VTB Capital Garden – ‘Spirit of Cornwall’ – a unique creative collaboration not usually seen in the industry, bringing together garden designers, architects, a composer, musicians and a sculptor; all commissioned by VTB Capital, a leading international bank. Garden design is by multi award-winning garden designers Stuart Charles Towner & Bethany Williams, winners of Gold & Best in Show RHS Hampton 2015, in collaboration with a multi-award winning creative team of architects Studio Evans Lane, Constella OperaBallet & sculptor Sheila Vollmer. Sited on Chelsea’s Main Avenue ‘Spirit of Cornwall’ is a multi-sensory experience: inspired by the work of renowned British sculptor Barbara Hepworth; and music composed by Leo Geyer, Artistic Director Constella OperaBallet, specially commissioned by the Hepworth Estate and Tate St Ives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hepworth’s garden. Conceived as a garden for a sculptor and a composer, ‘Spirit of Cornwall’ is contemporary in style, the garden features a palette of subtropical and temperate plants, illustrating the unique microclimates found throughout Cornwall. Concrete and steel form the only hard landscaping elements in the garden. The metalwork that runs throughout the garden is a physical manifestation of the music, taken from the sound wave pattern, with its peak expressed by the garden pavilion, a space for composing and performing designed by awardwinning architectural practice, Studio Evans Lane. Water features echo the sea views from Hepworth’s garden. The continuous circulation of water reinforces the musical motif. Sculptures by International sculptor Sheila Vollmer nestle amongst the planting, drawing inspiration from the rhythms of the garden design, the music and her own practice style; sources such as Russian Constructivism. VTB Capital is proud to have commissioned the ‘Spirit of Cornwall’ garden and support its talented designers and artists at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Established in the City of London for almost 100 years, VTB Capital helps its investment banking and corporate clients grow their businesses and retail customers grow their savings.
