Thure spillede backpackeren, excentriske danske Mads, i Sean Penns filmatisering af John Krakauers bog “Into The Wild” om netop dagens hovedperson, Christopher McCandless.

This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, we have a very information-dense topic! Lots of notes, lots of twists and turns, tragedy and comedy, philosophy and practicality, and a combination of essentially every topic that this show tends to cover. It's wilderness adventure-time! I'm joined once again by my cohorts Seedperson1 and Chris Fiato, and I share with them ten stories of men who experience what I can only describe as "wanderlust syndrome", which is throwing away all of their worldly possessions to hit the open expanse -- whether it be the Alaskan wilderness, the desert, the mountains, the beach, or elsewhere. Sometimes this syndrome turns out for the best, in the case of people like John Muir, and sometimes in the case of Chris McCandless of 'Into the Wild' fame or Timothy Treadwell of Werner Herzog's tragic documentary 'The Grizzly Man', it can end in the most horrifying ways imaginable. DIVE MANUAL AUDIOBOOK OUT NOW MY LINKTREE WITH ALL MY ACTION SEEDPERSON ON INSTA CHRIS ON INSTA BHA DISCORD CHAT (invite link expires in 7 days but it's easy to find on discord, or you can send it to you on social media) Here's the list of the names we discuss in the episode: Chris "Alexander Supertramp" McCandless - a transcendentalist adventurer who foolishly died in the Alaskan wilderness, famous from John Krakauer's book 'Into the Wild.' Everett Ruess - a young American adventurer from the early 20th century that embodied genuine poetic wanderlust, and who mysteriously disappeared in the Utah deserts. Carl McCunn - a wilderness photographer who was lost in the Alaskan wilderness during a series of very unfortunate events. John Waterman - a celebrated and very eccentric alpinist and mountaineer who mysteriously disappeared in the Denali Mountain Range. Gene Rosellini - another eccentric and philosphical man, like a mild-mannered Ted Kaczynksi, who attempted to live like a stone-age man in the wilderness of Alaska for over a decade before committing suicide. Timothy Treadwell - a very curious man who lived in the Alaskan wilderness amongst bears for many seasons before staying too late into the fall, only to be eaten alive on camera. He eventually became the focus of Werner Herzog's documentary 'The Grizzly Man'. August Engelhardt - a strange German man who lived and died on the beach eating only coconuts, claiming that they were the fruit of the gods, only to slowly starve to death in the public eye. Nathan Campbell - a man who went out searching for the alleged 'Dark Pyramid of Alaska' in 2020 and was never seen again. John Muir - an ecologist, philosopher, adventurer, and the man on this list that embodies the truest definition of the genuine poetic wanderlust, because he is the only man on this list that doesn't have a tragic ending to his story. We also bring up to lesser degrees: Aron Ralston of the '127 Hours' fame, Ted Kaczynski the Unabomber himself, and Carl Panzram the serial-killing train-riding hobo from the early 20th century. Lots to mull over this week! We hope you dig it. SHOW NOTES: Carl McCunn NY Times Nathan Campbell Dark Pyramid Everett Ruess Chris McCandless Gene Rosellini John Waterman Timothy Treadwell August Engelhardt John Muir Carl Panzram INTO THE WILD by John Krakauer WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig This week's featured music comes from an OG forgotten band that deserves way more respect for their innovation of hardcore, rock n roll, and experimentation! On today's episode we had the privilege of being joined by friend to many Rob Ackerman. Rob, his wife Shannon and their children have been a part of Desert Springs for over 15 years. Rob was raised in rural Minnesota and put his faith in Jesus in elementary school when a friend invited him to AWANA. He attended the University of North Dakota where he met his wife, Shannon. It was fun to hear Rob's side of the story as we got to hear Shannon share back in June (we've linked her story below). It was also in college where Rob began to really observe and learn from other's faith journeys. This became something important to Rob as he entered the different phases of his life. Rob and Shannon married and began Rob's army career with seven years of active duty. He couldn't get away from his love for flying and he still flies helicopters to this day. As Rob grew older, he began to recognize the importance of consistency with Christ and cultivating a steady faith. This is where most of Rob and Sarah's conversation stays, talking through that steadiness and consistency in walking with Christ. Whether it's marriage, raising kids, a mid-life crisis or relationship with God, it's always worth it to just show up and try with a genuine spirit. Rob has so much wisdom to share and we would encourage you to take this as a free advice session!Shannon Ackerman's story - https://open.spotify.com/episode/4AUrp22G810TpCtxrY4AEV?si=49565d2ee6cf418fMen in Midlife Crisis by Jim Conway - https://www.amazon.com/Men-Midlife-Crisis-Jim-Conway/dp/1564766985/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3NVYN1JRE79GK&keywords=men+in+midlife+crisis&qid=1699379773&sprefix=men+i%2Caps%2C3193&sr=8-1If you're interested, you can read about Chris McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_McCandlessWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? What do Henry David Theroux, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hemingway, Gandhi, and Jesus Christ have in common? Well, for one, they're all featured in the burgeoning social media presence of Shining Wind. Doug and Bear take a deep dive into the influencer's quotable quotes, and find some interesting connections… Hit play above to listen or scroll down to read. Enjoy!Bear and Doug walked quickly up the gravel lane. Doug looked back over his shoulder at July's cabin, the front door swinging slowly in the wind.“Woah!” Bear exclaimed. “This Shining Wind guy. He's got over half a million followers on his Instagram.” Bear held his phone up to Doug, rain speckling the screen. The two huddled under the small cherry tree leaning over the lane. The rain started getting heavier.Shining Wind's account had thousands of posted pictures. Most of the images were variations on the same theme of Shining Wind gracefully immersed in nature: surrounded by huge trees, staring out into a massive canyon, paddling across a glacial lake, looking out from the peak of a mountain to some distant, possibly transcendent beyond. His presence always calm and self-possessed, poised and in balance. Masterful. In most of the photos, Shining Wind's eyes seemed fixed on a horizon somewhere behind the viewer. Below each picture were short texts; quotes from Henry David Theroux, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hemingway, Gandhi, Jesus Christ, and others.Bear laughed. “What we can establish for sure is that this gentleman has healthy self-esteem.”“Looks like it,” Doug smiled. “It could also be self-therapy for low confidence.”One picture down the feed, posted on Monday September 15th showed Shining Wind standing in front of an old broken-down school bus, somewhere in a clearing. He was wearing a thick Icelandic woolen sweater and billowing, colorful trousers like some type of circus performer might wear, his hair flowing in the wind. Above him, the number “142” was painted on the side of the bus.“I recognize that picture from somewhere,” said Bear.Doug nodded, “Yeah. Me too.”The text below the image read, “The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. – Alexander Supertramp.” A long series of hashtags followed: “#backpacking #alaska #wildcamping #offthegrid #backcountry #adventure #intothewild #campinglife #optoutside #walden #ontheroad #dharmabus #dharmabums #canonphotography #galaxynote9 #organic #sustainableliving #offtrail #vagabond #jackkerouac #rucksack #rucksackrevolution #hitchhiking #wanderlust #climbing #naturelovers #supertramp #chrismccandless.”“Ah, I know what that picture's of,” exclaimed Bear. “It's in Alaska. Where that kid died. You know, the one who tried to live there for the winter, but starved to death. Like, when he was five clicks from the highway, but still managed to die.”Doug tapped the post's thread. They scrolled through hundreds of comments.JBelle Supertramp will always have a special place in my heart. He is an inspiration and a hero. I hope one day I get to see with my own eyes the bus that Supertramp called home.Roundedstone … oh the pull of nature that I feel in my heart.Richard_muybien That movie was great! I wanna travel in his steps too. I'm planning a trip up there to see the magic bus soon.sammyntammy Wilderness inspiration..... ❤️❤️❤️❤️Giuliogoesmental Didn't like. The book was amazing and the film made me cry. But this guy threw his family away and was ill-prepared for his journey. I think he was arrogant. One comment caught Doug's eye. It was posted on that same September 15th by The Beachcomber: “Behold the magic bus. You seem energized up there. Check your DMs. For all your followers and friends of the channel, check out an episode I made about McCandless and his time canoeing down the Colorado River, toward the Gulf of California. Something dark happened in the little desert town of Yuma, and we get to the bottom of it…”“It's that Beachcomber weirdo!” Bear whispered. “So they know each other…”“I think I watched a Beachcomber video last night,”  said Doug. “I think it's what gave me nightmares about zombies outside my window.”Bear went back to Shining Wind's profile. All the subsequent posts illustrated his journey from Alaska down to Terminal City. The most recent update, made just the day before, showed the mountainous silhouette of Sternum Island rising out of the dark ocean into a grey sky. A few solitary rays of sunlight shone through the thick clouds. Under the image was another quote: “The soul grows by reincarnation in bodies provided by nature, more complex, more powerful, as the soul unfolds greater and greater faculties. And so the soul climbs upward into the light eternal. And there is no fear for any child of man, for inevitably he climbs toward God — Annie Besant.”“Heavy stuff,” muttered Bear. He glanced up toward the darkening sky.“Let's get out of the rain,” Doug replied. This is a public episode. Il Death has a crazy way of putting a lot of things into perspective. With the recent passing on my dog and best friend Levi, I've been thinking a lot about what audio and podcasting REALLY means to me. It got me thinking of the Alexander Supertramp quote "Happiness is only real when shared". We as podcasters tend to hole ourselves in a spare bedroom, walk in closet, or any location that is completely separated from the sounds and sights of the rest of the world. It can get lonely, and that loneliness and isolation can really get in the way of progress.   This week I'm revising the concept of community, this time VERY determined to provide a safe place for listeners of this podcast, viewers of my videos, and I to freely express ideas, theories, tips, and techniques that will not only result in a better sounding podcast, but a more fulfilling experience along the way.     JOIN THE FUN ON PATREON!       Links: 10% off all merch, all proceeds benefiting the humane society Previous Episode on Community Community Vlog on YouTube Levi the Pitbull Clean Cut Audio on Twitter     My Signal Chain   Hardware: Audio Interface: Apogee Ensemble Microphone: Shure SM7b Headphones: Audio-Technia ATH-M50x Earbuds: Klipsch R6i II Studio Monitors: Yamaha HS7 Mic Stand: Rode PS1A Boom Arm   Software: IzoTope RX6 Mouth De-Click IzoTope RX6 Voice De-Noise FabFilter ProQ3 Waves Vocal Rider Waves CLA-2A oeksound Soothe2 Waves LinMB Waves WLM Meter Waves Durrough Meter Waves Abbey Road Studio3     -Save 10% off the plugins above with this affiliate link from Waves!-   *most of these links are affiliate links       Midroll Song: Road Trip by Joakim Karud Closing Song: Harmony by Joakim Karud   http://www.joakimkarud.com       For more info, or to ask any questions, check out my website and reach out to hello@cleancutaudio.com

This week (recorded July 28), Cate kicks things off with some hot topics and headlines including new episodes of Unsolved Mysterious coming to Netflix (out today!), white voice actors quitting gigs where they played people of color on popular animated series like Big Mouth and Family Guy, Elizabeth Banks bringing the iconic character of Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus book series to life in the upcoming live action movie, and Alaska removing the bus that had become the site of perilous pilgrimage for people who idolize Christopher McCandless aka "Alexander Supertramp," the subject of John Krakauer's famous book Into the Wild. In Crime Time, Liz reports on teen Tik Tok users who accidentally discovered human remains on a Seattle beach and a Florida woman who got life in prison for plotting her husband's murder with his best friend and tried to blame it on alligators.

Zomer, reizen, Alaska! Einddoel is Alaska. The story of Christopher McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp is something most Alaskans consider a cautionary tale. Jon Krakauer and Sean Penn treat it as a romantic tale of the spirit of idealistic youth. The brothers have opinions. In addition, This Week in Tox History covers the Ides of March and the death of Ceasar, Billie Holiday's bad and good behavior, St.Patrick - past, present and future, the invention of hemodialysis, the Pillsbury DoughBoy (no relation), the Micturating Stones, the Clash and the crash of Teddy Pendergrass, mutiny on the Mississippi, the Japanese sarin subway attack, the Rosenbergs and the agony of defeat, among many other things.
