Happy Klassenkampf!

Nitric Oxide for our health is so important!

 1. A brief description of what Nitric Oxide is It is a molecule produced by the inner lining of the blood vessels and in our nerve and immune cells. If we age, we cannot produce so anymore Nitric Oxide.Nitric Oxide helps to organize and activate our immune system to prevent viruses, pathogens, free radicals, bacteria to come inside of our body or fight against them.*Keeps your blood vessel flexible.*Encourages vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels). *Lowers blood pressure. *Improves mood & cognition. *Supports a healthy immune system. *Defends against pathogens.Too less Nitric Oxide leads to high blood pressure, blood clotting, heart attack, brain stroke, memory loss, erection dysfunction, and less sexual arousal for women.  4 Ways to Increase Nitric Oxide Production.1. Deep nasal breathing.Because the inner lining of our nose blood vessels are involved to produce a good portion of our Nitric Oxide. We breathe deeply in and out through the nose. And that can we apply also for interval training, strength training, sport…2. Humming When we hum, we produce 15 times more Nitric Oxide than by normal breathing through the nose. We inhale through the nose with closed lips and hum when we exhale slowly with closed lips. The humming was in Tibet and in India used for healing of the body…With the humming we can heal a cold, sinus inflammation…  The strong humming for one hour daily will heal chronic rhinosinusitis in 4 days.Guess, I tried this out for my sinus inflammation that I got through a failed root canal treatment… I took first the colloidal silver and then for the rest of my sinus inflammation I tried humming… It worked! We can do humming everywhere, when we are alone or doing the great Nada Brahma Humming Meditation from Osho… Actually doing 1 hour humming/day is not difficult.3. This method is fun to do!3. We use Otto Bisonic weighted tuning fork (128Hz) with weighted arms, that generate big overtones and vibration. (don't use it when you have a pacemaker) You bring the Otto tuning fork in vibration by hitting the top of one of the vibrating arms against a hard rubber or a bone of yourself. And then you stick the lower end of the tuning fork handle on these 7 different points. Apply only 1 to 2 times the vibrating Otto tuning fork on these 7 points. When doing more than 2 times/day the healing effect will be diminished. 1.  Crown of the head, crown chakra (highest point of the head).2. Third eye.3. Mastoid process. Behind the ear, prominent bone, located middle of the ear. Do it for both sides.4. (TMJ) In front and close of the ear below the cheek bone where the jaw joint starts after the bulk bone. Do it for both sides.5. Manubrium, 2 finger below the center of the coastal cartilage (where both collar bones are joining in a U-form).6. Sternum - heart chakra 7. SacrumYou can apply the Otto tuning fork also on different acupuncture points… I love thatMethod 4 through eating leaf plants. We can get Nitric Oxide through our food. The bacteria on the tongue produce Nitric Oxide from plants with natural nitrates. The artificial Nitrates in meat cannot used to produce that healthy nitrate, it produces also the unhealthy Nitrosamines. We can get that from green leaves and Nitrate rich plants and fruits. We need 300 to 400mg Nitrates from leafy greens and beans. By eating Spinach, Beets, Kale and other Greens...The Nitrates in the plants depend on soil condition, time of harvest, fertilizer added and water availabilityThe American diet has only 40-100mg nitrate/day.Antiseptic mouthwash, antibiotic will prevent to produce Nitric Oxide from our bacteria on our tongue. My video: Nitric Oxide for our health is so important! https://youtu.be/ELOOr-vWcj0My audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast1/Nitric.Oxide.for.our.health.is.so.important.mp3

Pterosaurs flew! No big shock there, but obviously flight places major constraints and selective pressures on the skeleton. This should mean all pterosaurs have standard, not-that-varied flight anatomy (in the same way most walking animals have similar leg anatomy).  It turns out an absolutely critical part of the pterosaur is both basically all but unstudied and wildly variable, yes, it's the sternum. Dr Dave Hone (hello!) has just published a huge paper cataloguing and describing basically every sternum for every pterosaur out there and Iszi (hello!) gets to the bottom of why this is important for science and bad for Dave's mental health.  Here is a link to Dave's blog: https://archosaurmusings.wordpress.com/2023/04/20/everything-you-didnt-think-to-ask-about-the-pterosaur-sternum-and-were-afraid-to-ask/?fbclid=IwAR3roJ1M-PgFO-53NZlPEXv--jkTo2xLTbh1okSC03QkeFY4nFnjZ_TELVw As always do consider supporting us on Patreon and unlock extra content: https://www.patreon.com/terriblelizards

Doug and Bear head back to the No Job Too Small IT consultancy office to peruse the strange book they found at July's place. Will it give them any clues as to what she's been up to out in the forests of Sternum? Or will it send them down another rabbit-hole of spectral histories and fleeting visions?Hit play above to listen, or scroll down to read. Either way, please enjoy, and do share with any friends who you think might like APOCALYPSE ROCK! “WE LEFT IT AS WE FOUND IT.”Doug and Bear were back at Doug's office. It was still a mess from the previous day's suspected break-in. Doug was sitting at his desk and talking on the phone with Officer Singh, his breath steamed in the chilly air.“We knocked on the door and shouted her name but didn't hear anything… No… No. I don't think she's trying to hide. Maybe from you or Sweetland, I would understand, but not from us.”Doug fiddled with a cigarette, the window next to his desk already open in preparation.“No, we didn't go in… Okay, alright.”Doug hung up, looked around the mess then at Bear, who was in the chair opposite, jacket on and arms crossed, shaking his downturned head. Bear stood up and carefully walked through the stuff scattered across the floor.“Man, they tore this place apart,” Bear sighed. “You got coffee?”“Yep. In the kitchen. I'll have one if you're making.”Doug looked up at the large poster map of the Salish Sea that hung on the wall. The jagged coastlines and hundreds of islands looked protected against the vast Pacific Ocean that was just hinted at by a small lip along the left side of the map.Doug opened July's laptop and punched in the password. The input field wobbled and an “Incorrect” message came up on the screen in red letters.Bear clattered around in the kitchenette, preparing coffee.“She hasn't changed her password in decades…” Doug mumbled to himself, then tried again. The same negative result wobbled up on the screen.Doug scoffed, closed the laptop and picked up the book they had taken from July's desk, running his fingers through the multicolored tabs of post-it notes sprouting from inside the pages. The laminated dust cover had started to blister with age. Beneath the ornately scripted title “Don't Climb Trees…” was an old black and white photograph of a small, forested islet floating in a mirror-like sea. Spindly evergreen trees reached up from the rocky shores and into the mist, their reflections undulating in the smooth waters below. The shoreline was cluttered with a hodgepodge of tiny wooden shacks that jutted out into the still sea, their little chimneys seeped out wispy smoke. Small boats bobbed close to the shacks, and near the camera's eye there floated logs and other refuse. Under the image were the authors' names, Sanctity DeVray & Whispering Bird. Below that read “Published by the Anderson P. Andersen Collection.”Doug opened the book. On the inside cover was stamped “Sternum Island Public Library” in black ink. Pasted opposite on the flyleaf was a pocket for an old library checkout card, the slip still inside, covered in due dates. The first was May 1989, the last was September 2005. “Withdrawn From Circulation” was stamped across the pocket in red ink.A gurgling sound came from the kitchen and the smell of brewing coffee started to fill the chilly air. Doug leafed through the book, his fingers sticking on the paper. There were maps of the Pacific Northwest, old black and white photographs of longhouses and totem poles, colonial buildings and cemeteries, moss-covered cairns and Christian graves overgrown with shrubs. There were groups of young men posing heroically with oversized saw blades in front of giant, felled trees, of indigenous men dressed in a mix of their traditional attire and European suits and bowler hats, of small figures in distant dugout canoes paddling through the misty sea. There were stern-faced members of old religious orders gathered around tables decorated with flowers in celebration, then young hippies in kayaks, or frolicking among camper vans and teepees by the sea, naked children with long hair joyously splashing in a watering hole.“I properly googled Sweetland last night,” Bear shouted from the kitchenette. Doug heard the sound of coffee pouring into cups.“I reached out to some contacts on a couple forums as well. I couldn't find anything about him being a cop anywhere else other than here. It's like he just up and left his couples counseling business back east, then appeared here one day, dressed as a Mountie. And that was that. Bob's your uncle.”Bear emerged from the kitchenette with two steaming mugs of coffee.“Ta-da, you're a Mountie!”“It's possible this was his first post?” replied Doug. “He wouldn't be the first person to move out west to reinvent themselves, right?”Doug took one of the mugs of coffee. Bear looked on as Doug continued to flip through the pages of the old book. The chapters were brief, each describing specific locations, dates of when the burial sites were actively used, various burial rites, and some local lore. Many of the pages had notes inscribed in a neat longhand script in pencil, about the different sites, personal recollections of visits to the places, cryptic annotations about geography, and so on.“Is that July's handwriting?” Bear asked.“Pretty sure,” replied Doug. He turned to the index at the back and looked up Sternum Island. There were four entries in the same chapter, Chemainus, Christian, Cowichan, Saanich. He flipped to the chapter. A map of Sternum Island was dotted with several burial sites, and overtop that July had  jotted down dozens of potential sites on the northwest side of Mount Costo. Next to the cluster of dots she had written “Hippies.” Another dot – this one by the book authors, not July – marked the center of Sternum Village, just up the lane on Orchard Grove. It was July's cabin.“There's bodies buried in July's garden?” Bear wondered.Doug raised his eyebrows at Bear then turned the page. On the left was a picture of a gathering of cairns in the woods, covered in forest debris and ferns.“Mount Costo plateau has numerous, uncounted burial sites, many of which were made inaccessible after a landslide.” Doug read out the caption below the image.“I remember my granddad telling me about a landslide up Costo,” said Bear. “But that was near the old garbage dump up there.”On the right page was a photograph of July's cabin when it was newly built. Apart from the structure settling into the uneven ground beneath it over the years, little about the cabin had changed to present day. A family of five, dressed in their Victorian Sunday best, posed outside on the porch steps. It was a sunny day, the vast garden behind the group lush and verdant looking. Over the shoulder of the straight-backed father, Doug could make out the diamond-gridded window. Doug squinted at the face of the mother, her eyes hidden in shadows, prominent cheekbones and a long, thin-lipped mouth.Despite the blurriness, there was a strong resemblance with July's long and expressive face. Cradled in the woman's arms was a baby.  There was a caption below the picture, “Original Sternum Island homesteaders family, the Shackles, outside their Orchard Grove cabin in 1898. Several early pioneers are buried in unmarked graves nearby on family land.” The neat longhand script had underlined the name Shackles, drawing a line out into the margin, noting, “Edith Shackles neé Billy married William Conrad Shackles, New Albion 1886. Edwina (baby) married into Straitemores 1928, Patricia (3 y/o) married into McDonalds 1920, Charlotte (4 y/o) married into Hardens 1923.”“This must be July's great-grandparents and grandparents,” said Doug. “They'd've just built the place and moved in.”Bear took the book and smiled, “There's so few buildings left from then. Back when Terminal was still called New Albion. Barely past being a one-horse town.”Doug laughed, “I remember July telling me that her grandmother was quite the flapper in the 20s,” he said, pointing to the blurry little baby. His finger moved back to the mother, Edith, her shadowed face's contours echoing July's.“It's uncanny,” remarked Bear. “Has July ever said anything about her grandmother?”“Not really,” replied Doug.“July never mentioned it,” said Bear. “I'd guess her great-grandmother was First Nations, with that last name.”“Billy?” Doug squinted at July's handwriting and Bear nodded.“Was that normal back then, like natives and white people getting married and everything?” asked Doug.“More than you'd guess,” replied Bear. “All those guys from back east or Europe moving out here? Chasing a dream. They sure as hell weren't going back home. Sooner or later they'd want a family. When that sets in, people tend to lose whatever prejudices they might have real quick, I guess. It's the oldest story there is.” Bear handed the book back to Doug.“You can see she was looking everywhere on Sternum for burial sites,” said Doug, flipping through the rest of the chapter, then turned back to the map of Sternum.Doug popped the cigarette in his mouth and lit it up.“Especially up Costo,” said Bear, raising his cup. They sipped on their coffees and some rain-speckled wind blew gently through the window. Tendrils of smoke curled up around Doug as he skimmed through the book.“What're you smoking?” Bear scrunched his nostrils.“American Spirit. Why?” They both looked at the cigarette in Doug's hand.“Smells weird, man. Like burning tires,” Bear stood up and sniffed.Doug stubbed out the butt and stood up, the two sniffing at the strange odor that now wafted through the chilly air, getting stronger and more pungent.Out the window, dark plumes flew over Doug's office and into the forest behind. They ran out to the front of the office. In the distance, up the gravel lane, above the tall trees, a thick stream of dark smoke rose into the grey sky.“July's cabin!” shouted Doug. This is a public episode. T.G.I.F. (on Sternum Island, that is) Doug didn't get a very good night's sleep, though – what with all the conspiracy theory YouTube videos, the flies swarming the house, and people watching him through his bedroom window. Rate and/or review this story wherever you may have found it, and please share with any friends who you think might like it. Enjoy!“REMEMBER KIDDOS, I'M GONNA PICK YOU UP AFTER THE PARENT-TEACHER MEETING, OKAY?” Doug was leaning out of his car window. Dora and Irene stood in front of the schoolyard, backpacks on.“Yes, Daddy,” Dora replied. Irene blew a raspberry at Doug and giggled.“Well. Thank you very much, Irene,” Doug replied to the little toot. “After I pick you up later, we're gonna go for a short visit to a friend's place, on Mount Costo.”“Yay!” Dora flailed out some jumping jacks. Irene tossed her arms around and blew another, longer raspberry.“I know it's not the funnest thing to do on a Friday, but it'll be quick. But you can watch TV on my phone while I finish the job. Okay?”Doug pulled his car out of the school parking lot and onto the main road, pointing the car toward his office. Clouds had rolled back in overnight but it didn't feel like rain today. The air was still mild with a slight sharpness hinting at an incoming winter.“Just checked compound. No July, no Sweetland. WTF?” Bear had messaged him. Doug had agreed to check in again on his way to work.He spread out the fingers of his right hand, and then contracted them back into a fist. His hand still ached. It was even worse this morning. He switched the radio on, “… cloudy all day with a ten percent chance of rain. The spirits of the Salish Sea are high today, and they want to keep us high too. High, dry and mighty!” the DJ monologued, “You're listening to 107.7 The End, digital-first until the brutal last. I'm DJ Bacon, Mr DJ Bacon, your friendly local avatar. The next song was requested by self-described regular listener, first-time caller, Bad Sleep.” Doug blinked his eyes and yawned. “Hope you get some rest soon, okay, buddy?” the DJ continued. “I'm not sure this tune's gonna help you nod off, buddy. But it's a blast from the past, a real rare gem. As reinterpreted by the Icelandic orchestral synth-pop virtuoso, known as Kejvín. I hope I'm pronouncing that right, Kev. It's an icey, sometimes dicey Nordic take on Billy ‘The Piano Man' Joel's classic, We didn't Start The Fire.” Doug chuckled to himself. He hadn't heard that since he was a small kid. It might be the first pop tune he had ever heard. He turned it up.A hoarse, floating voice sang over a flickering, raw guitar riff. “I saw a sign in the sky, ‘I have come to set you free,' and a light, shining brighter, shining down, down on me… I saw fire, fire and brimstone, coming down on my head.” It wasn't the same song at all. Doug switched the radio off. His car crept in silence beneath the high trees, the road unraveling before him.Doug pulled into the police compound. Sweetland's truck wasn't there. Parked in its place was a Terminal City Police Department cruiser. Doug got out and slammed his door shut, its metal clanging loudly. He went into the compound's reception. It was empty, but the front desk had that morning's issue of the Terminal Caller newspaper. It was closed and still neatly folded, as yet unread. Next to it was a steaming cup of coffee. Under the coffee cup was a light blue folder with red letters across the front. It was upside down but Doug could read the word “CONFIDENTIAL” on it. He had to squint a bit, but the small print title said, “Operation Endless Wellness: substance dispersion via Leek Point watershed. A manual and timeline.”There was a cough somewhere. Doug looked around, but nothing. He turned back to the desk. Above it was a large noticeboard covered in dozens of blurry images of dogs in the forest, just like the photograph Sweetland had shown at the previous night's meeting.Doug thought he heard a door shut somewhere further inside the compound.“Hello?” Doug called out. “Is anyone here?” He heard a slamming sound, footsteps and then the inner door to the reception opened. Standing in the doorframe was a medium build, wiry but strong seeming man, arms and legs slightly akimbo, like a human-sized action figure. Dressed in a Terminal City police officer's uniform, he had a dark, well-kept beard and a blue turban on his head.“Good morning sir, how can I help?” he asked crisply.“Oh, hi. Good morning,” Doug replied. “I was looking for Constable Sweetland. Is he off today?”“Constable Sweetland is in Terminal City,” the policeman said. “I'm Officer Singh. I'll be covering until he returns. Can I help you?”“I'm Doug Shasta. Constable Sweetland arrested a friend of mine last night and I want to see how she is.”As Doug spoke, Officer Singh strode over to the desk. He picked up the coffee cup and as he took a sip he slid the blue folder into the desk drawer.“Another friend of mine tried to check in last night to see how she was doing,” Doug continued. “But no one was here. We've both tried calling her, and checking if she's back at her home, but no luck.”Singh looked Doug up and down, then squinted at the odd stain on Doug's head left from Dr Hubble's secret sauce. Singh opened up the logbook on the desk and skimmed through it, “Well, the Constable called in last night saying he'd be leaving Sternum, and a replacement was necessary as soon as possible. But there's no mention of any arrest yesterday. And there's no one in the holding cell. Are you sure your friend was taken into custody?”“Certain,” replied Doug. “Her name is July Straitemore. She lives in the cabin on Orchard Lane in the village. She was arrested yesterday at about 5:30 in the evening. I saw Sweetland put her in the back of his police truck myself. She was handcuffed. I saw it right up close and then saw him drive off with her.”Officer Singh looked confused, “Do you know why he arrested her?”“I didn't see what exactly happened,” explained Doug. “But from what Constable Sweetland said, it was because July had stopped him from catching her dog. He thought it had rabies.”Officer Singh's look of confusion deepened, “And he arrested her for that?”“Well, they were both bleeding from some kind of wounds,” replied Doug. “So maybe that's got something to do with it. But I don't know.”“Hm. Well the quickest way to clear this up is to call HQ,” Singh shrugged. He picked up the phone and dialed. As Singh spoke with the police department in Terminal, Doug scanned the dog images on the noticeboard. In the bottom right-hand corner of each picture there were notes written in the same tidy hand, presumably Sweetland's, marking the location of each sighting, describing the temperaments of the dogs, from “disinterested,” to “hungry,” or “aggressive,” and so on. At the end of each description, Sweetland had written “Cull Urgency,” followed by a ranking out of 10, none of which fell below nine.“Mr. Shasta,” Singh hung up the phone. “Can you tell me, did anyone else see the arrest happen, besides yourself?”“Maybe. Well, nah, I don't think so,” Doug flustered. “I don't know. It happened right outside the town hall, but everyone was inside except me.”“The reason I ask, is that Constable Sweetland has yet to check-in at Terminal City. Nor do they have any record of a custodial arrest occurring on Sternum Island, let alone any other arrest. Or, indeed, any report about anything at all. In fact, there hasn't been a single report for several months now.”“Sweetland was also supposed to follow-up on the possible attack that happened to me.”Singh squinted at Doug, “You were attacked?”“Well, we don't know for sure,” Doug replied. “I think I caught someone in the middle of a break and enter at my office. The door and a window were open when I arrived, then I heard a crash inside. Then I looked in my office, and it had been ransacked. Then everything went black. Sweetland thinks that someone knocked me out.”Doug motioned to the discolored patch on his head, “That's where I got this.”Singh raised his eyebrow, then looked at Doug's bandaged hand, “And that?”“That's different. Ramses bit me.”“Who?”“Ms. Straitemore's dog, Ramses, he bit me. It's not serious. Just a little nip.”“Right. Anyway, that possible break and entry, and assault? It hasn't been logged or reported either,” Singh replied, shaking his head. “Honestly, sir, I'm a bit confused.”“You can definitely confirm that break-in with other people,” replied Doug. “Sweetland gave a report about it at the town hall last night, right before he arrested July. There were, like, 300 people there.”Singh looked hard at Doug, “And you were the only one out of all those folks who decided to leave that meeting?”“I had to leave early to get my kids,” replied Doug. “Their mother had to catch a plane to Vancouver, for work.”“Your kids…” Singh followed, nodding, “How many?” he opened a small notepad and started scribbling in it with a tiny pen.“Two daughters, six and four,” Doug replied.“You and their mother, you live together?”“No, we split up a few years ago,” said Doug.“When's she returning?” Singh asked.“Sunday,” Doug replied.Singh finished writing and closed the notepad. “As I said, Mr Shasta, I only know what I'm told and what I see. I was not told of any arrest. There's no one in the holding cells here and nothing is noted in the logbook, or at HQ. Similarly, with your own experiences of a break-in, and assault: there's no record.”Doug's phone vibrated but he ignored it. “But how can I find my friend?” he asked.“Go check her place and… keep trying to call her,” replied Singh. “In the meantime, I'll log our conversation with HQ. I imagine we'll hear from Sweetland soon when he checks in to Terminal City. We'll clear all of this up. Sound good?”“Yeah, okay,” Doug replied, his head had started pounding again. As Doug walked back to his car, he checked his phone. It was a message from Bear, “Come to July's.  Now.” This is a public episode. Happy Sunday and welcome to the eighth chapter of APOCALYPSE ROCK. Last week was jam-packed with news of all sorts - ranging from bad to worse, to just plain weird. I hope you enjoy!DOUG PEERED OUT THROUGH HIS WINDSHIELD AS THE DJ'S VOCAL FRY BLARED. “That's right, folks, pay no attention to the body parts washing ashore!” he exclaimed. “Nothing to see here, folks. Move along! Move along! On that note, here's a pearl from the past. Blue Öyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper… as covered by up-and-coming, soon-to-be local legends of ambient black metal hip hop, Dogsbane!” The classic rock tune's opening riff had been replaced by an orchestra of distorted guitars. Incomprehensible vocals screamed out, and an MC name-checked the players as Doug's car climbed over the hill just ahead of the trail to Mount Costo.Standing in the same spot where Doug had left Shining Wind was another person, wearing a bright yellow rain jacket. They raised their right arm slowly, and started waving at Doug, then stepped out onto the road, almost in front of his car. Doug slowed down, switched on his hazard lights and pulled up next to the figure. He turned down the music and opened the passenger side window.“Everything okay?” Doug called out the window.“Good morning. Are you Douglas?” a woman's voice asked through the window.“That's me. How can I help?”“You dropped my friend off here this morning,” the woman said and then held up Doug's dog-eared business card. “He passed this on and said you might be able to help with some internet problems we're having.” The woman smiled, “Also, I need a ride into the village. All our vehicles are in use right now. If you're going that way could I could hitch a ride?” Doug nodded, thinking he heard a slight Irish accent to her voice. Or maybe Scottish. He thought it might also have a bit of German too.The woman got in the car. She had strikingly light, almost white, blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. She had fair skin, a thin face with delicate features, and a straight-backed posture. Her age was indiscernable. She could have been anywhere between her thirties or her fifties.“My name is Marcus,” she said as she locked eyes with Doug, her face in a smile.“Pleased to meet you, Marcus,” Doug replied, lifting up his bandaged hand. Marcus almost took it, but stopped.“Oh, yes. Shining Wind said that you'd just been bitten by a wild dog?”“Yeah, that's true, but it's a friend. I mean, it's a friend's dog. It's not wild.” Doug paused. “Have you been out there in the rain for long?”“I'm actually not sure,” laughed Marcus, her smile constant, just like Shining Wind's. “I love the rain. The sound of it, the smell of it in the forest, how it just takes everything over. I get a little lost in the experience,” she laughed softly.Doug switched the hazard lights off and pulled back onto the road. They drove south through the downpour.“I'm the same,” said Doug after a minute. “With the rain. Especially in the morning, it's comforting, I think.”A large truck came speeding around a blind corner ahead, its headlights on high, blearing through the station wagon's windshield, making Doug squint. The air pressure of the passing truck shook the small station wagon. This part of Sternum's main road, where it traversed a central valley twisting with blind corners and hills, was Doug's least favorite.“Up Mount Costo, it feels like you're in the actual rain cloud,” Marcus continued, “I have a pretty lame joke I tell about our heads literally being in the clouds,” she laughed. Doug kept his eyes on the road. “But I'll save you from more of that.” The two of them laughed. They came to the border, the signs in this direction reading, “AU REVOIR!/GOODBYE! YOU ARE NOW LEAVING CANADA! THANKS FOR VISITING!” Followed by “WELCOME TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! LAND OF THE FREE!”“It's a beautiful part of the island, up where you folks are,” Doug agreed, “All the local kids, we used to go camping there. But I haven't seen what it's like after it was developed. A couple friends tried to visit a few months ago but it was gated off.”“Unfortunately, we had to put up gates and warning signs. It was the insurance company,” Marcus explained, “That was not something we wanted to do. We certainly didn't want to exclude anyone. Especially from a place the have a connection with. But hopefully we have a solution now.”The headlights of a vehicle flickered in Doug's rearview mirror, then rapidly brightened, closing in on them.“I'm guessing you're going to the meeting later?” Doug asked.“Definitely,” replied Marcus. “I imagine there's quite a bit of interest in what we have planned.”When they came to a long stretch in the road, Doug slowed, letting a stream of cars overtake and speed past the little red station wagon, water spraying up in their wake onto the driver's side window.“It's the rush for the next sailing to Terminal,” Doug explained, nodding at the red taillights disappearing into the blueish gloom ahead. “That's the closest we get to a traffic jam here!”“I like how you take your own time,” said Marcus. “It's a valuable skill to have in this world. Taking time.”“Actually, it's more about safety,” Doug replied. “The ravine here is a trap, especially when it's wet. Which is pretty much always, I guess.”The station wagon descended the steep hill into Sternum Island Village. As they passed the post office, the town hall, the pharmacy, Doug pointed each one out, telling Marcus some of the history of the area.“Some folks want to rename Sternum and the village to their original native names,” Doug explained. “I can't pronounce it, but I think this area would be translated as something like Seal Bay. But seals don't really come in here anymore. The boats and the ferry are way too loud for them. But I think it would be great to have names with real history for the people here. Not just names of some guys who mapped the area, or their friends. Most of them never even set foot here.”“It's like my name,” said Marcus. “I was given a female name when I was born. Elisabeth. But after joining Golden Years, I was offered the name of one of their recently passed founders.”“Yeah, I was wondering,” Doug replied. “Sorry…” cutting himself off, unsure if he was being rude.“It's fine. I know some people find it strange, and I understand why. But in the end, what's in a name? They're all reincarnations of a kind, right? Anyway, I'm happy with it.”Doug pulled into a parking space near the cafe and switched the engine off. Marcus leaned forward, touching her hand lightly to his forearm which rested on the parking brake.“Thank you for the ride, Douglas,” she said. “We've ended at the perfect place,”“Excuse me?” Doug asked.“The cafe,” Marcus nodded toward Brandi's Cafe, which Doug had parked opposite from. “I need to get coffee beans.” Marcus opened the door and stepped out into the drizzle. “We're almost completely out,” She stooped back down. “If there's one thing those folks demand up there, it's coffee. And if we run out they'll tear me apart.”“Oh, right,” Doug laughed. “The essentials.”“But, if you have the time it would be great if you wanted to come and visit us,” Marcus continued. “We have some issues with our internet that you might be able to help us with. What's your availability like?”“To be honest,” replied Doug, “my calendar is pretty flexible.”“How about tomorrow?” Marcus asked. “I know it's short notice, but we can offer a retainer of one thousand dollars.”Doug felt his stomach jump. “That's a lot of money, Marcus. I don't even know what the problem is. I mean, I don't… I don't know if I can even fix it.”“It's our standard payment arrangement. It's what we feel is right and fair,” Marcus replied, “You can say no after having a look. That's completely fine. But it would be amazing to have your help. And we'd really prefer to find a local person who we can get to know and trust.”Doug thought about the payment reminders pinned to his office noticeboard. “I have my kids tomorrow. But, I could come up with them in the afternoon. How's four o'clock?”Marcus smiled and nodded, closed the car door and walked into the cafe. This is a public episode. Hey! Welcome to chapter six of APOCALYPSE ROCK!LAST WEEK: Doug, a dog, his friend July, a mysterious bit of flotsam (or jetsam). This week? Doug meets the new breed of islander washing up on the shores of Sternum Island…Hit play above, scroll down for ye olde fashioned reading text. I hope you enjoy, and please share with friends if you think would like APOCALYPSE ROCK : )THE FIRST SAILING FROM TERMINAL CITY HAD JUST DOCKED. A convoy of large trucks disembarked, their headlights gleaming through the rain. Several vehicles pulled over at Brandi's Cafe, but most rumbled straight up the hill, into the island.Doug opened the tailgate of his old, red Toyota station wagon. The cargo area was full of junk that had accrued over the past years: rubber boots jammed under a fire extinguisher. Some oil-stained towels were clumped in a plastic bag. A tumbleweed of electrical cables was surrounded by empty water bottles. A box of Doug's new yellow posters sat between a six-pack of Coke and a small chainsaw.Doug chucked his work bags into the mess, slammed the tailgate shut, and dashed to the driver's seat to get out of the rain. Looking for his keys, his hand clasped onto the small glass cylinder. He took it out of his pocket and put it in the glove compartment. The cylinder now sat nestled in a clutter of poorly folded maps, pens, rubber bands, its surface luminescent among the other bits and pieces.A knock on the passenger window startled Doug. He looked up at the dark shape huddling over the car. “Good morning,” a figure said politely, voice muffled by the window. The figure stooped, a beard brushed rainwater against the glass. Doug leaned over and rolled down the window.“Hi, good morning,” a man repeated, “Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you… I just got off the ferry. I'm looking to hitch a ride?”“Where you going? I'm heading up north.”“That's exactly where I'm heading,” the man sounded relieved. “I'm trying to get to Allan Road. To the access trail up Mount Costo?”“Jump in,” Doug could see the man was lugging a large backpack. “You can put that in the trunk. It's unlocked.”After wedging his backpack in among the mess in the back, the man got in next to Doug. He pulled down the drenched hood of his jacket. Slim, dark-skinned and sharp-featured, he looked in his mid- to late twenties, with a tidily groomed beard and black hair bunched up in a samurai style man-bun. “Thanks so much,” he said, holding out his rain-soaked hand. “My name is Shining Wind.” He smiled with an excellent set of teeth.Doug started the car. The window wipers kicked in and a voice shouted out over the sound system. “107.7 The End! Out there music way out here! Your friendly neighborhood DJ…” Doug turned the volume down. The calming sound of swishing wipers replaced the shouty radio.“First time on Sternum?” Doug asked, carefully backing onto the road.“Yeah,” Shining Wind replied. “First time out west, actually. I hopped trains all the way out here from Atlanta.”“Atlanta? That's a long way,” said Doug, “How long it take?” Doug accelerated cautiously up the hill, and out of the small village.Shining Wind seemed to ponder Doug's question for a while. “I left in early August, but I wasn't in a rush,” he explained. “I stayed with some friends in Denver, in Portland. Picked up some work on the way. Managed to get up to Alaska for a bit, and now I'm here. I guess, it took about a month and a half, but I could have done it in under a week, if I hadn't stopped anywhere.”“Sounds like a good trip,” said Doug. “I've always wondered what riding the rails would be like.”The man's smile widened. “It's definitely cool to get off the beaten track. It's not some packaged holiday, right? The paths less traveled and everything. It's where the real world begins.”Shining Wind paused, a look of satisfaction on his smooth face. “Are you based here?”“Born and raised,” replied Doug. “I went to university in Toronto for a bit. But I guess I wasn't made for city life.”“Shanti.” Shining Wind pressed his palms together. “Right now, I'm definitely a nomad, but I know I'll want to settle down one day. I'm not sure where that search will end…” He smiled wistfully out the passenger window and let his statement hang in the air.“But, I'm guessing you're not going out to Allan Road on a whim?” asked Doug.“Oh, no, this is very much a purposeful journey,” Shining Wind put a serious look on. “I'm going to the Golden Years Retreat. Do you know it?”“Only a little bit. Everyone here's talking about it right now.” Doug navigated the car slowly through the rain, the solid yellow line curved along the winding, hilly road. “Is this the first time you've visited them?”“Well, it's my first visit to this retreat,” Shining Wind replied. “But the friends I stayed with in Denver and Portland also run branches there. They've been going for years… This one is the newest property.”They drove into a small valley and came up to a sharp left turn.“Well, the retreat where you're going to. That used to be parkland,” explained Doug, taking the corner slowly. “All us local kids went camping there all the time, until it was sold. I think everyone on Sternum is wondering what's gonna happen there.”The car headlights caught two eyes blinking out from the woods.Doug slowed down, “Ramses…” He glimpsed a black hide slipping back into the dark forest.“Everything okay?” Shining Wind asked.“It's a friend's dog. He ran away this morning.” Doug pulled the car onto the gravel shoulder, the passenger side brushing up against ferns. He switched on the hazard lights, illuminating the surrounding forest in flashing red, and got out onto the road. “He's friendly, but big and scary if you're not expecting him,” Doug explained.“Ramses! Ramses!” Doug's shouts disappeared into the gloom of the early morning. He scanned the forest, the ticking hazards of the car etching red images of trees into his retina. Doug caught movement somewhere in the flashes.“Can you see him?” Shining Wind asked.Doug heard a deep growl approaching, then a dark blur lunged at him.Ramses's teeth clamped onto Doug's right hand, piercing the skin and sinking into his flesh.“Goddamn!” Doug shouted. It was a quick bite and Ramses backed away as fast as he appeared, shrinking and heaving, as if Doug's hand was poison. Ramses's haunch lowered, preparing for another lunge.“Stop it, Ramses!” Doug shouted. Ramses stood his ground in the middle of the road, growling. “Bad dog!”A rapid succession of white flashes cut through everything. Shining Wind was standing out of his window and was perched up over the car roof, holding his phone in both hands, posing like a war photographer.Doug turned back to the road. Ramses, frightened by the camera flash, had vanished.“Man, that hound was as big as a fucking cow!” Shining Wind yelled with excitement. “Are you okay?”“I'm okay, thanks,” Doug replied, covering the bite under his left hand. He dropped back into the car. “That's not like Ramses at all…” Blood dripped onto his phone. “I just need to message my friend.”“Do you want me to look at that?” Shining Wind offered.“It's okay,” Doug was almost embarrassed. “It's not deep. I just need to wrap it in something.”Shining Wind held out a white bandana. Doug wrapped it around his right hand, then awkwardly tapped a message to July, his finger smearing blood on the screen. He switched the hazards off and pulled the car back onto the road. There was a dull electric-like zap whenever Doug so much as twitched his right hand. For a while the pair sat silently, the car meandering along the wet road. They came to a straightaway, and drove past a large billboard on their left-hand side: “YOU ARE NOW LEAVING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.“Don't blink…” Doug said.Another sign quickly followed, now on the right: “WELCOME TO CANADA!/BIENVENUE AU CANADA!”“… That's the border. We're officially up north.”Shining Wind laughed. “Has it always been like this? Like, so… minimal?”Two smaller signs on a single wooden white post approached. The top sign showed an image of a bounding deer, and below it was a depiction of a sharply twisting road. Both signs were pockmarked with gunshots.“Yep,” Doug answered. “They only put those border signs up in the 80s. It used to be, like just a line painted on the road…”As Doug continued, he saw that Shining Wind was gazing into the passenger side window. He seemed to be admiring his reflection.“So, how'd you get involved with them?” Doug asked.“Golden Years?” Shining Wind nodded, “I'm a trained artisanal baker. But my core passion, right now, is being a Journey-Vision Curator. It's basically about using storytelling to educate how we're all a part of nature. Essentially, I make narrative, experiential tours.”He turned to look at Doug again. “I met Golden Years when I was developing a dog-sled experience. I went to one of their seminars about ASMR-augmented eco-therapy. That heavily influenced the yurt immersions along the trail I had curated. I haven't looked back since.”“So, is that what they do up at the retreat?” Doug asked. “Like, therapy-type stuff, in yurts?”“Oh, they do a lot of things. It started out as a sweat lodge in the 70s,” Shining Wind explained. “Then they started doing yoga and meditation courses. In the 90s they pioneered online courses. Mindfulness-business studies, positive habit generation, community healing, experimental diets, sustainable fashion. You name it!” Shining Wind was on a roll. “You haven't been up there yet?”“Nope,” replied Doug, “I've seen some posters in the cafe, and some of the links they put online for their yoga stuff, but that's it. Actually, there's a town meeting tonight. We're voting about some construction they want to do. There's a lot of interest about what's happening up there.”“Oh yes. Their fortress on the mountain. I've heard they want to move all their online activities here, so they need way more space and infrastructure. Right now, the internet's too slow up there, and they need more power. They do need to get their content out to a big audience.”“Are there a lot of people involved?” Doug asked.Shining Wind laughed. “It's a worldwide thing. If you aggregate all their followers, it's at the high end of six figures. Actually now, maybe millions. It's a movement,” Shining Wind looked at Doug earnestly. “Most of the founders are coming over this weekend… hopefully to celebrate a good connection with the Sternum community!”Doug flicked on the turn signal and pulled the car over gently. He switched the hazard lights on. “Okay. This is the north Costo access trail,” Doug pointed toward a steep gravel trail running off the main road. “I'd take you up, but this hunk of junk can't clear that.”“Hey, don't worry about it,” Shining Wind replied. He pulled a card out and gave it to Doug. Printed on the card's semi-translucent matte paper were the finely embossed words, “@shiningwind_journeys_within Transformative Experiences. Curated.”“Ah, thanks, I have a card somewhere here, too…” Doug reached over and opened the glove compartment. He moved the small glass cylinder to the side and rummaged around until he found a stack of dog-eared cards. He pulled one out and held it toward Shining Wind. But his passenger's attention was fixed on the glove compartment. His smile had dropped into a cold, quizzical look.“Are you sure you haven't visited Golden Years?”“Hundred percent.” Doug replied, closing the glove compartment.“Or met anyone from there?” Shining Wind persisted.“Not so far as I know. I'm pretty sure you're the first. I mean, I know everyone I meet around here.” Doug replied.Shining Wind's face snapped back into a warm smile. “Thanks for the journey, Doug. And take care of that bite…”Shining Wind put Doug's card into his jacket pocket, and got out of the car. Doug flexed his hand. The sharpness of the pain had settled, but now there was a dull ache. Small patches of blood stained the textile's black paisley pattern. After retrieving his belongings from the trunk, Shining Wind bent down into the open passenger-side door. “You should visit us on the mountain, Doug. You'd like it.” Shining Wind patted the pocket where he'd put Doug's card. “And there might be some projects you could help us with.”Doug waited until Shining Wind had crossed the road, then pulled his old station wagon back onto the asphalt. He looked into his rear-view mirror and saw Shining Wind standing there motionless, face hidden under his hood, watching Doug depart. This is a public episode.
