Aaron Fearne was head coach of the Taipans for nine seasons and led the team to three postseason berths. Fearne was named the NBL Coach of the Year in 2015. Prior to the 2018/19 season, the Taipans announced that Fearne would not return as head coach and shortly after he moved to the US to take up a role as an assistant coach at the University of Charlotte. Shawn Dennis spent 16 years in the NBL as a coach with the Newcastle Falcons, Perth Wildcats and Townsville Crocodiles, this included winning NBL coach of the year in 2016. Since the demise of the Crocodiles Dennis has coached in Japan's rapidly growing B.League, the country's premier national league despite having only started in 2016 has become one of the highest paying leagues in the world. Last week Jacob Jackomas was announced as the new Illawarra Hawks new coach, replacing his mentor Brian Goorjian.   With Goorjian announcing he will be coaching the Bay Area Dragons based in the Philippines Jackomas will take full control with the Hawks and look to take them one step further after their semi-final loss to the Sydney Kings.   Jacob Jackomas previously acted as Goorjian's assistant coach for more than a decade, his extensive coaching resume includes stints in the NBL, China and the Australian Boomers program over the past 6 years.    Jackomas has also had a little taste of being the Hawks head coach after he covered Brian Goorjian's absence earlier this year when he came down with the coronavirus. In his one-off game as an NBL head coach Jacomas impressed fans by delivering a win against reigning champions Melbourne United. Ben Knight has been announced as the 2022 winner of the Sydney Kings' Ring of Honour award.  The fan and member-voted award will be presented officially at Sunday's massive clash at Qudos Bank Arena against the Illawarra Hawks.  The Ring of Honour recognises players not just for their talents on the court, but for other reasons worthy of recognition consisting of:     The most entertaining;    The most courageous;    A great teammate; or    Those who gave back to our community.   Ben joined Dan Boyce on the Aussie Hoopla podcast to discuss his NBL career which included playing for nine teams (an NBL record) during his 16 seasons in the league. Rob Beveridge ticked off a bucket list item when he was named head coach of the Australian Boomers and guided the team to a 3-0 record in February's FIBA World Qualifiers held in Japan. The team, NBL development players and European talent faced a gruelling quarantine process and only two days or preparation for the tournament which Bevo gives his insights into the experience. Beveridge added this achievement to a resume that features a Paralympics silver medal from 2000, an assistant coaching role with the Boomers at the 2004 Olympics, coaching Scotland at the Commonwealth Games 2018 and the two medals won at the junior World Championships in 2003 (gold medal) and 2019 (bronze medal). Beveridge has spent the past three seasons coaching New Zealand's Southland Sharks and he also shares some of his knowledge of the league and why the league is more popular than ever before. Whyalla born and bred Chris Blakemore began training with the Adelaide 36ers in 1990 before spending two seasons at the Australian Institute of Sport and signing a rookie contract with the team in 1993. He played three seasons with the 36ers (1993-1995), a period where the team saw a young core of Blakemore, Brett Maher, Scott Ninnis and Brett Wheeler develop into a playing group that ushered in a new era of success in Adelaide. His playing career saw him spend time in Argentina, Dubai, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Sweden and Ukraine. Playing under Cal Bruton at Canberra he teamed with Tonny Jensen, David Patrick, David Simmons, Troy Pilon and although the team only won three games that season, he shares tales of the fun they had on and off the court. Replacing import Matt Garrison he joined the Cairns Taipans for two seasons and helped them become must-see tickets in Queensland's upper north. Guy Molloy has called it quits on coaching the Melbourne Boomers WNBL team after almost a decade with the club. Molloy will move to New Zealand to take on a dual role which includes coaching the New Zealand Tall Ferns (National Women's team) and coach the Wellington Saints in the NZNBL. Molloy has spent 32 years coaching at a national level in Australia which included stints with The Australia Women's national team, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne in the WNBL and for the men spent time in the NBL coaching both the Cairns Taipans and South Dragons. It's fair to say no other coach has the experience Molloy has at coaching both sexes at a national level and he joins the podcast to chat with Dan Boyce on the differences between coaching men and women and the lessons he's learnt from coaching in our national leagues. Isaac Burton played 96 games in the NBL over four seasons with both the Sydney Kings and the Newcastle Falcons. A defensive ball hawk who excited the crowd with flashy dunks was a fan favourite in Sydney and the NBL during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Burton became embroiled in a point-shaving scandal during his time playing basketball (and baseball) at Arizona State University, a moment in history that has recently been made into a Netflix documentary called "Bad Sports". The documentary focuses primarily on the players at the centre of the ASU scandal, namely Stevin “Hedake” Smith and Burton, but it also zooms out to lay bare the real villain in their story: the NCAA, which doled out stipends so insufficient that athletes came to see point-shaving as their only means of survival.  Burton re-joins Aussie Hoopla to go into further detail on the point-shaving incident, discuss his involvement in the crimes and interactions with the FBI and how it impacted him. The Perth Wildcats announced the surprise signing of exciting import Vic Law for the 2021/22 NBL season. While many hoops tragics were convinced Law was likely to be in Brisbane for a second season, Law instead headed west and will look to pair with NBL MVP Bryce Cotton and help the Wildcats secure their eleventh NBL championship. Last season Law averaged 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds per game (fourth in NBL), 2.6 assists and 0.6 steals before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in his first NBL season in the NBL. The injury kept him out of action for five months but once he had rehabbed the injury he was offered the opportunity to play for the Los Angeles Lakers at the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Law averaged 10.0 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Lakers NBA Summer League team, including a game-winning performance against the Clippers where he came up with the clutch triple and defensive play to seal the win.  Law played his college basketball at Northwestern University before a short stint with the Orlando Magic in the NBA. This month the Perth Wildcats announced former Director of Scouting at Philadelphia 76ers Danny Mills would join the team as General Manager of Basketball Operations. Mills' primary role will be to oversee the basketball department, with a particular focus on recruitment, talent identification and player pathway strategy and development. Mills was born and raised in Perth and played juniors for both Wanneroo Wolves and Willetton Tigers. Andre Moore joins the show to talk about his NBA and NBL career as well as what's happening on the Australian Basketball scene today. Moore was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the 2nd round of the 1987 NBA Draft. In 10 games with the Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks, he averaged 2.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Moore then embarked on a career in Australia when he signed with the Brisbane Bullets in 1990 and led them to that year's NBL Grand Final before losing to the Perth Wildcats. His teammates on Brisbane included fellow Americans Derek Rucker and Leroy Loggins. Moore's outstanding play saw him selected to the 1990 All-NBL Team after he averaged 26.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, and two blocks per game while shooting 61.1% from the field. Aaron Grabau played 405 games with the Cairns Taipans, was the only player to be a part of both the team's inaugural roster in 1999 and the teams first NBL Finals appearance (2011). He became a Taipans legend and to date is the only player to have his jersey retired by the club (twice, which you'll hear about on the show) and he joins Dan Boyce on this episode to go discuss his career as well as the first 15 years of the Cairns Taipans in the NBL. Grabau takes us those first few years of the franchise where winning was a surprise benefit, to the success achieved under coaches Alan Black and Aaron Fearne. We revisit the Taipans visit to the 2011 NBL Finals where they finish one game short of becoming NBL champions and get his take on some of the greatest Taipans players of all time. Grabau's resume also includes five state league championships, three ABA National Championships, two ABA National Championship MVP awards, all with the Cairns Marlins. Grabau finished his career as the Taipans all-time leader in games played, rebounds and steals and second in all-time points scored. Head Coach of the New Zealand National Men's basketball team, the Tall Blacks, joins Dan Boyce on this episode to talk about his time in the NBL, Steven Adams chances of joining the squad in the future, how New Zealand basketballers aspire to play in the NBL and coaching plans for the Tall Blacks future. Pero Cameron was a part of the inaugural New Zealand Breakers squad who entered the NBL in 2003 and went on to play five seasons in Australia. He was also a part of the inaugural Gold Coast Blaze team in 2007. He played 130 NBL games and averaged 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists and was one of the greatest "screen setters" in NBL history and a consummate professional. His greatest success came whilst playing in the NZNBL where he is a 9-time NZNBL champion (1995-1997, 1999-2002, 2008, 2009) and for his efforts playing for the New Zealand national team, known as the Tall Blacks. Pero was the captain of the New Zealand Team that defeated Australia in the Oceania championships in 2001 and achieved history by reaching the semi-finals of the FIBA World Championship in 2002.  Pero's achievements were recognised worldwide when he was named part of the FIBA Hall Of Fame in 2017.  Topics include... Melbourne United rookie Jack White had just begun a fantastic rookie season when he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury against the Cairns Taipans in April. Jack now faces 12 months of rehabilitation to get back onto the court and in uniform for United. Mark Leader joined the Devonport Warriors NBL team in 1983 after graduating from Western Oregon University.  A 6 month holiday in Australia that turned into a 12-year NBL playing career that included championships in 1989 and 1994 with the North Melbourne Giants. Leader, who is the only Giants player to be a part of the two title runs, he also captained the squad from 1993 to 1995. After his career Leader turned his hand to coaching, first with the Giants NBL program as an assistant under Brett Brown and then as head coach of the Ballarat Miners and Geelong Supercats in the state league where he won national championships at both clubs. Dejan Vasiljevic played his junior basketball with the Melbourne Tigers program before accepting a scholarship to attend Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence and shortly after the University of Miami. Vasiljevic graduated in 2020 band declared for the NBA Draft but with COVID-19 cancelling any opportunity for NBA teams to see players work out prior to the draft his stock plummeted. Dejan returned home to Australia and after considering a number of European offers decided to play his first professional season in the NBL with the Sydney Kings. He is currently averaging 17 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists after 18 games and alongside former teammate at the Melbourne Tigers, Josh Giddey is a top candidate for the NBL's Rookie of the Year award. Luke Nevill grew up playing basketball for the Stirling Senators in Western Australia. After struggling to get noticed by elite coaches in Australia he moved to the United States to play high school basketball with Kell High School in Marietta, Georgia. It didn't take long to be noticed by the University of Utah and accepted a scholarship in 2004. He decided to redshirt his first year as a Utah Ute and developed his skills during training sessions against fellow big man Andrew Bogut. With NBA interest growing around Nevill he decided to return to college for his senior season, leading the Utes to the NCAA Tournament. At the conclusion of the season, he was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 16.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. Nevill went undrafted and after participating in a training camp invitation from the Cleveland Cavaliers he became one of the first Australian's to go on to play in the NBA D-League, signing with the Utah Flash in 2009. He played 48 games, started 43 of them and averaged 11.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. In 2010 Nevill returned to Australia, signing a deal with the Melbourne Tigers. It was a tumultuous season for the Tigers, after recruiting multiple big men (Cam Tragardh, Wade Helliwell and Matthew Burston had also signed deals that season) the team had an unbalanced roster and failed to make the playoffs.  Nevill averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in only 25 minutes per game. The following year Nevill returned to Perth when the opportunity to play for his hometown Perth Wildcats came along. In the 2011–12 NBL season, Nevill averaged 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block per game and helped the team reach the NBL Grand Final where they narrowly lost to the New Zealand Breakers. Nevill signed a pre-season deal with the Indiana Pacers in 2012. He narrowly missed out on making the team and then returned to the NBL, signing with the Townsville Crocodiles mid-season. Nevill played in Taiwan during the 2013–14 season before returning for his last NBL season with the Wollongong Hawks in 2014. It was a difficult season for Nevill who averaged the lowest numbers of his NBL career, 7 points, 6 rebounds per game in a team that finished dead last with a record of 6-22. Doc Adkins is largely unknown to most current NBL fans but is truly an unsung hero of the league and responsible for much of the NBL's success since it was started in 1979. Adam Caporn is the current head coach of Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence and an assistant coach with the Australian Boomers. Caporn was Australia's first player recruited to Saint Mary's College of California which lead to an influx of Aussie talent through the doors of Saint Mary's that included NBL and NBA stars like Daniel Kickert, Patrick Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Jock Landale all play for the Gaels. Caporn returned to Australia after two seasons in California to play three seasons with the Wollongong Hawks (2003-06) and three seasons with the Perth Wildcats (2006-09). After retiring at only 27 years of age he returned to Saint Mary's as an assistant to head coach Randy Bennett, who had recruited him to the Gaels a decade earlier. The opportunity to become the head coach at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence arose in 2014 and Caporn returned home. He has since also become an assistant coach with the Australian Men's National team. Luke Schenscher went from playing domestic basketball in Canberra to become the first high school student to play for the Australian Boomers in three years. His rapid development earnt him a scholarship to Georgia Tech University and then played two NBA seasons, one with the Chicago Bulls and the other with the Portland Trailblazers. Unable to secure a long-term NBA deal he returned to Australia where he would play 211 NBL games over 8 seasons with the Adelaide 36ers, Perth Wildcats and the Townsville Crocodiles. He was the starting centre on the 2010 Perth Wildcats championship team and named to the All-NBL second team in 2009 and 2011. The Adelaide 36ers signed former EuroLeague star Tony Crocker as their second import and final roster signing for the 2020-21 NBL season. The Oklahoma native carved out an impressive college career, playing alongside Blake Griffin at Oklahoma University, reaching the NCAA Elite Eight in 2009. Tony's decade-long pro-career has included significant stints in the Basketball Super League in Turkey and the EuroLeague. The 33-year-old forward most recently played with Pinar Karsiyaka in the Turkish Super League and the Basketball Champions League and having won a number of slam dunk competitions during his time in Europe he is expected to excite the Adelaide fans with his above the ring playing style. Tony averaged 10.5 points during the COVID shortened season for Pinar Karsiyaka. Prior to that he had played alongside Russian basketball legend Alexy Schved at Khimki Moscow, finishing runners-up to CSKA Moscow. With the recent passing of Stormin' Norman Taylor, Aussie Hoopla host Dan Boyce and Norman's Illawarra teammate Greg Hubbard remember the player and the man who was the most effective scoring in NBL history. 1990 marked the beginning of the most exciting era in Wildcats history after businessman Kerry Stokes purchased the franchise and moved the team into the iconic 8,000-seat Perth Entertainment Centre. The season was a turbulent one to say the least with the first controversy coming when coach Alan Black was fired and replaced by Bruton only two games into the season. The team then limped into the playoffs in 5th place and a 17-9 record. After knocking out the North Melbourne Giants in the Semi-Finals the team moved forward to a Grand Final match-up with a tough Brisbane Bullets squad featuring Leroy Loggins, Derek Rucker and Andre Moore. Tens of thousands of people across Western Australia tuned in to the live coverage to see the Wildcats triumph 112–106 in Game 1 of the Grand Final series in front of a sold-out crowd of 8,200 at the Perth Entertainment Centre. Brisbane tied the series at 1–1 after winning Game 2 in convincing fashion at home, 106–90 and in the deciding game, the Wildcats blew the game wide open in the third quarter, creating a 20 buffer to come home easily in the fourth quarter and win the first NBL championship for a Western Australian team in a 109–86 victory. Ricky Grace was recognised as grand final MVP, averaging averaged 25 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists over the three-game series.
