SEGA Saturn, Shiro! is proud to present our latest podcast episode and the premiere of our fourth season: S4E1, Realtime Stories with Mr. David Warhol. Headlining the podcast is an exclusive interview with Mr. David Warhol, president and founder of video game studio Realtime Associates. Realtime is responsible for a total of seven Saturn titles, most famously the launch title Bug! Also notable is the debut of the newest member of the Shiro team, Nick Broadway! Nick is known for his first-class Saturn YouTube content under the stage name PandaMonium. SEGA Saturn, Shiro! is extremely impressed with the quality of Nick’s content, and excited to welcome Nick to the Shiro family. Patrick resumes hosting duties and is joined by fellow Shiros K, Peter, Ben and Nick. The team dives into the vast amount of Saturn news, then enjoy the in-depth conversation with Mr. Warhol, who provides a fascinating, detailed glimpse into the life of a SEGA Saturn third party developer. Prepare for some stunning insights! § How the Saturn almost – almost! – had a fully 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game at launch, § A third party’s perspective of developing for the Saturn vs. the PlayStation, § Developing for Saturn right at the beginning of the system’s life as compared to towards the end, § Discussion about the state of the industry, § A frank conversation about emulation and enjoying retro games in today’s day and age, § And much, much more! Opening the Podcast is a plethora of Saturn news, from the upcoming wireless, licensed Retro-bit controllers to the PolyMega to the Bandai Saturn model kits. It is certainly an exciting time to be a Saturn fan! The episode doesn’t feature an existing Saturna Obscura – an obscure Saturn game in line with the podcast topic – however, Nick gives us a well-rounded look at the recently leaked Beta version of Saturn Star Wars: Rebel Strike. Surprisingly playable, this leak is more than just a few lines of code. We close the episode with some reaction to the conversation with Mr. Warhol, team updates (find us at PRGE!), as well as a musical track referenced by Mr. Warhol, the Bug Bop, before signing off with some funny outtakes from the recording session.
Tom Sulda is director of Latsa Learning Services, where he leads a national team of instructors in Australia. Latsa’s instructors are also part-time consultants who help clients implement new best practice process methodologies, such as Prince2, Managing Successful Programs, AgilePM and AgileBA. Additionally Sulda’s company IPX Check is a newly certified CSIA Best Practices and Benchmarks auditor where Tom is the lead auditor. In this episode, Sulda offers a brief primer on agile project management vs the waterfall approach and the pros and cons of each. Plus he reveals who should give it a try and who should sit this one out. Hey Saturn guys & girls! Dave here, and since I'll be going on a brief hiatis from the regular podcast releases, I just wanted to share with you some of my absolute all-time favorite SEGA Saturn music tracks. As you all may know I'm a pretty big Saturn nut, and I love the Saturn's sound chipset so much. So I'm really excited to show off some of the best tracks it has to offer. Mind you, some of the tracks I chose are fairly obvious, but I also feel like I got a few lesser knowns in there as well. I hope you all will let me know what you think of these choices, and maybe even let me know what some of your favorite tracks are.

Capcom Generation 2: The Chronicles of Arthur Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom *Ghosts'n Goblins (Makaimura) *Ghouls'n Ghosts (Dai Makaimura) *Super Ghouls'n Ghosts (Cho Makaimura) * _D_* Developer: WARP / Publisher: Acclaim A horror themed interactive movie and adventure game directed by Kenji Eno. The first entry in the D series staring "digital actress" Laura, and controled through (FMV) sequences. Game must be completed within two hours without a save or pause function. * _Deep Fear_* Developer: SEGA AM7 & System Sacom (Mansion & Lunacy) / Publisher: SEGA A 1998 survival horror game and SEGA's answer to Capcom's Resident Evil. The last Saturn game released in Europe. Features include: real-time item use, aiming while moving, and oxygen management. Music was composed by Kenji Kawai (The Ring, Ghost in Shell, Ranma, Kamen Rider). Creatures and Characters designed by manga artist Yasushi Nirasawa (Kamen Rider). * _Dracula X_* Developer: Konami / Publisher: Konami Saturn version contains exclusive features, including new playable character (Maria Renard), new items, new enemies, two new areas (Cursed Prison and Underground Garden) and a secret outfit for Richter Belmont. A third equippable hand is available to Alucard for equipping usable items such as healing items. Badly ported because the PlayStation does not have a true 2D sprite mode. Developers did not take advantage of Saturn's sprite capabilities, forcing it to render using the same method as PlayStation. Resulted in stretched graphics (PS1 runs 256x224 resolution, while Saturn does 352x240), longer loading times, and altered transparency effects due to lack of alpha transparencies for 3D polygons. * _Enemy Zero_* Developer: WARP / Publisher: SEGA A 1996 survival horror adventure directed by Kenji Eno. The second game to star "digital actress" Laura, and voiced by Jill Cunniff of Luscious Jackson. * _House of the Dead_* Developer (Ported): Tantalus / Publisher: SEGA Port suffered from rushed development. Framerate drops to 20fps. Extra game modes were added which include character selection and a boss battle mode. * _Lunacy (Gekka Mugentan Torico)_* Developer: System Sacom / Publisher: SEGA An interactive movie with a simple interface and complex puzzles. The game is primarily a long series of interconnecting FMV sequences. * _Mr. Bones_* Developer: Zono Incorporated & Angel Studios (RE2 on N64) / Publisher: SEGA A multi-genre game created for SEGA by Ed Annunziata. Very few levels share the same gameplay or perspective. Genres include action/platform, music/rhythm, puzzle & memorization. The game's soundtrack was composed and performed by famed guitarist Ronnie Montrose. * _Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge_* Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Exclusive port to Saturn, while original Darkstalkers for PS had no confirmed release date, resulted in angry PS owners. The original Darkstalkers used 128MB for all characters, Vampire Hunter uses 256MB in total, resulting in an average of 500 extra patterns for all characters. * _Resident Evil_* Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Saturn version added an unlockable Battle minigame where the player must traverse through a series of rooms from the main game and eliminate all enemies within them with the weapons selected by the player. Minigame features two exclusive enemies not in the main game: a zombie version of Wesker and a gold-colored Tyrant. The player's performance is graded at the end of the minigame. The Japanese version is the most gore-laden of all the platforms. Saturn version also features exclusive enemy monsters (re-skinned Hunters called Ticks and a second Tyrant prior to game's final battle) and exclusive outfits for Jill and Chris. Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Released in Japan only in 1998 and required the 4MB RAM cart. Saturn version contains all 15 characters from original Vampire Savior, plus the 3 Night Warriors who were left out of original arcade release. 4MB RAM cart helps reproduce fluid animation of the arcade version. However, while Shadow is available in the Saturn version, Marionette is not.
On this week's episode, we go in depth with playing imports and backups. From swap tricks, to complete CD drive replacements. We also drop the release of Armed (Also known as Aftermath), an unreleased Sega Saturn game developed by Point of View, which was originally going to be published by Interplay. The URL for the game is provided in the podcast itself. DECRYPTION KEY: !3qtr16NLg_QaBI5ynoslPnPKe3G9tTRWnHhQKZG-sm4
