The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: Get ready, we are one day away from the Grey Cup partying getting fully underway in downtown Hamilton. Why are children in newcomer families in East Hamilton developing health issues like Type 2 diabetes? As we prepare to be awash with Grey Cup festivities, the ATU strike continues with neither the city nor the union ready to budge: what needs to be done here? Look, up in the sky: It's bird! It's a plane! It's… some astronauts' toolbox, and it's lost in space! But we should be able to see it from Earth. The meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden is getting underway in San Francisco. Yesterday, Mayor Andrea Horwath released a statement regarding the ongoing strike by ATU Local 107. Now, we get response from Eric Tuck. Writing in the National Post, Kheiriddin says that it is only Trudeau's vanity that is keeping the Carbon Tax alive. Sam and Emma host Raymond Jackson, President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689, to discuss the recent strike by Loudoun County Transit workers in Virginia. Then, they are joined by Helena Bottemiller Evich, founder of the publication Food Fix, to discuss the recent developments within the FDA and the issues surrounding Abbott's baby formula. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Trump's pleading of the fifth for the 400th time, the AP African American course updates, Nikki Haley launching her run for the GOP nomination in 2024, Hochul siding with her corporate lobbyists once again, and the previous abuses of the cops that killed Tyre Nichols, before parsing through Biden's State Department's refusal to acknowledge the apartheid and oppression faced by Palestinian people. Raymond Jackson then joins as he dives into the context of ATU Local 689's strike as it reaches its third week, with Keolis taking over Loudoun Transit in 2021 and promptly cutting health benefits and forcing workers into outrageous workloads, all while serving the richest county in the US. After walking through the one-sided bargaining that has taken place in the wake of the takeover, Jackson discusses the other transit strikes inspired by Keolis's takeovers, before they wrap up the interview by exploring the various ways to support Local 689 both from Virginia and afar. Helena Bottemiller-Evich then dives into the recent announcement of a major reorganization of the FDA amidst intense scrutiny over their food management, tackling the baby-formula drama that put this issue front and center, and why, despite decades of dysfunction, this issue only just came to a breaking point. They discuss the impact of Donald Trump's takedown of the administrative state, and why it didn't impact the revolving door of drug-focused administrators, before taking a step back to look at the much greater issues that faced the FDA's actual attempts to regulate food, particularly in terms of its funding and relationship to the industry it supposedly regulates. Wrapping up, Helena, Sam, and Emma tackle the recent updates to FDA regulation, including taking heavy metals out of baby food, and how to bolster the US' ability to regulate the food industry. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Donald Trump staking out his violently transphobic agenda, the major PACs that stand in line with him, Lindsay Graham's defense of supporting Trump despite his agenda being mirrored across the GOP, and Jonah from Montreal discusses Crowder's legacy in Canada. Chris from the Twin Cities dives into the dangers of increasing transphobic policy, Ben Shapiro wishes Black people would just comply with the Police's conflicting commands, Tony discusses the challenge of balancing means-tested social welfare with low-income budget changes, and H. Jon Benjamin has a heart to heart with Sam about the issues he brings to the Bob's Burgers studio, plus, your calls and IMs! We talk about his working life and all that goes into being a bus operator, all the things that passengers never see—even though we depend on workers like Erek every day to live our lives. We also talk about Erek's experience as a shop steward and about his unshakeable commitment to honor, justice, and to empowering the working class. In fact, it was because he stood up for these things that he was unjustly dismissed from his job in May.    Additional links/info below...   International Campaign to Reinstate Chicago Bus Driver Erek Slater PETITION: Drop All Charges and Reinstate Chicago Bus Driver Erek Slater  Update on Campaign to Reinstate Chicago Bus Driver Erek Slater   Erek's Facebook page and Twitter page ATU Local 241 website page   Connecticut Workers Crisis Response Facebook page   Sarah Lazare, Jacobin, "A Chicago Bus Driver Says He Was Retaliated Against for His Opposition to Transporting Police to Protests"  WorkWeek Radio, ""We May Have To Shut It Down" Fight To Protect Health & Safety For Chicago ATU 241 Members & Public"  Labor Beat, "São Paulo Is A Union Town: Travel Notes of a Chicago Trade Unionist" Labor Beat, "Joint Action in Tokyo and Seoul"     Featured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org) Jules Taylor, "Working People theme song" Cletus Got Shot, "Justice Is My Name"

Labor Express Radio Audio Extra: Chicago bus driver and elected ATU Local 241 board member denounces CTA management’s suspension for discussing solidarity with anti-police brutality protesters. CTA Bus Driver and elected executive board member of ATU Local 241 Erek Slater is fighting an unlawful suspension by CTA management who have repeatedly harassed him and his fellow bus drivers, denying them their 1st amendment rights as well as violating labor law and union contract protections. It appears that at the heart of the harassment is the bus drivers' discussions of how they should respond to the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International's position that bus drivers have a right not to cooperate with police in their operations against anti-police brutality protesters. Around the country, especially in NYC and in Minneapolis, bus drivers, in solidarity with the protesters, have refused to cooperate with the police. A unknown number of Chicago bus drivers have done the same but have faced varying levels of disciplining or threats from CTA management. It appears that CTA management is uncomfortable with employees even discussing the issue on their own time and in spaces designated for union discussions. At a press conference at Federal Plaza on Monday, Erek Slater spoke along with his lawyer and other assembled supporters about the situation. Erek covers a lot of ground in his speech speaking to not only the ATU's position on the anti-police brutality protesters, but also the ongoing concerns over COVID-19 which has claimed the lives of an inordinate number of transit workers around the country. Erek Slater speaks here in his own capacity and not representing the CTA or ATU. Thanks to Labor Express Radio reporter Michelle Burke for capturing the audio of the press conference. This is the full 4-19-2020 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. On this episode of Labor Express Radio, we continue to look at how the labor and other social movements are responding to the coronavirus crisis. The COVID-19 crisis is sparking worker's self-activity in a way not seen in generations. How are unions responding to this exciting development? Along with the theme of social solidarity in the time of physical distancing, this theme of the rise of grassroots working-class action is something I seek to explore on Labor Express and its starts tonight. Moises Zavala, Director of Organizing for Local 881 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) talks about the Raymundo Foods workers walk-out. Erek Slater, bus driver, elected board member of ATU Local 241 and founding member of Transit Workers Unite and Eric Basir train motorman and member of ATU Local 308 discuss Transit Workers Unite's petition calling for workers action in the face of COVID-19 and the job action of the CTA train cleaners. Interview conducted by Labor Express reporter Michelle Burke at the “Transit Workers United 2020 Contract Speak Out” on February 25th, 2020. Michelle speaks with Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) El train motorman Eric Basir, member of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 308 and CTA bus driver Erek Slater elected shop steward and executive board member of ATU Local 241 about the issues facing CTA employees as they enter their third month working under an expired contract. The previous contract expired on Dec. 31st, 2019 and negotiations on a new contract did not start in earnest until January with little progress so far. Eric and Erek are both members of Transit Workers United which seeks to unite members of both unions with passengers in a broader fight to not only advance contract demands but fight for better public transit for all; overcoming a certain amount of traditional separation between both unions and the unions and the riding public. Some of the top issues include over-reliance on part-time workers, long shifts with inconsistent time off and violence against employees on the job. In particular, Eric and Erek respond to recent proposals by CTA management to add rear passenger loading stations at the back of CTA buses and to increase police presence at CTA stations and on CTA vehicles. Both Erics/Ereks suggesting more union employees on the trains and buses and reducing fares are better solutions to reducing violence and increasing safety than militarizing public transit. I apologize for the rough quality of the audio. Michelle had to conduct the interview in windy winter conditions outdoors at the Brown Line terminal.
