Today we are joined by Audrey, one the co- Founders of The Polyfloss Factory. The company's main goal is to reduce plastic waste and to transform it into a valuable and unique new resource by inventing a machine inspired by the principle of candy floss making, to recycle plastic waste. The technology turns plastic waste into fibre that can be used for insulation, packaging, textiles and moulded plastic pieces. We have a huge interest in sustainability as we have discussed in many of our previous episodes, so Audreys business is incredibly fascinating to us.Audrey met her fellow founders on the masters program Innovation Engineering Design course at the Royal College of Arts & Imperial College London and is now a teacher there herself! She initially trained in fashion and has worked as a designer in several companies such as Alexander Mcqueen and Jean Paul Gaultier working in haute couture.  Audrey tells us some stories from her time in this world from seeing the beginning of 3D printing and digital embroidery technology, also getting the chance to design and dress Lady Gaga with her innovative and technology led fashion. She gained amazing creative skills and had some incredible experiences but felt this wasn't the career for her, Audrey wanted to design for purpose and to help people. The Polyfloss family was formed after realising the amazing chemistry the four founders had bringing together engineering, material science and industrial design coupled with their curiosity about each other skills led to a great family dynamic with no hidden agendas. Audrey and the team spent years learning all about plastic - she even conducted her own experiments in her kitchen much to her flat mates dismay!  For more than 6 years they developed their technology and used it for educational workshops, exhibitions and tests. The team were so determined to get the Polyfloss name out there that at points they even slept in the exhibition space when they couldn't afford a hotel! We ask Audrey how this machine can be applied or used in the retail industry. One of the biggest issues we've found as Buyers wanting to work with recyclable materials and more sustainable options. We discuss how retailers need to be making conscious decisions without putting the pressure on the buying team to ‘make up the money'. Audrey tells us all about how the Polyfloss Factory is currently developing a brand new and easy-to use mini Polyfloss machine for Fablabs, R&D centres, associations and anyone wishing to tackle plastic on a small scale. Our takeaways:The team's patience and passion during years of trial and test, highlight the importance of staying true to your values, continuously learning, and challenging your thinking. Collaboration across diverse skills often leads to the best solutions. the polyfloss story reminds us of the power of working together. It's inspiring to be surrounded by the next generation. They bring hope with fresh ideas and a strong determination to drive positive changeThis episode is an incredible educational and inspirational listen. 3Com's Ergo Audrey was an internet appliance, released in 2000 and discontinued 7 months later. Designed by Don Fotsch and Ray Winninger, Audrey was intended to be part of a family of devices, each serving a specific room in the house. The kitchen was their initial focus "Internet Snacking" - lightweight web browsing in a home setting. Audrey had a touchscreen LCD interface and came equipped with a stylus. It was powered by a 200 MHz Geode GX1 CPU, with 16 MB of flash ROM and 32 MB of RAM, a modem, two USB ports, and a CompactFlash socket for connectivity. Available in colors like "linen", "meadow", "ocean", "slate", and "sunshine". Named in honor of Audrey Hepburn. 3Com discontinued Audrey in June 2001. The hardware hacker community embraced the leftover Audreys, discovering exploits and modifying the device for their own needs. Despite its short lifespan, Audrey's innovative design and functionality made it a unique piece of internet appliance history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3Com_Audrey #3Com #3ComAudrey #InternetAppliance #RetroTech #Retro

Episode 64: Don't Change... It's rare that a song that eked into the Billboard Charts at number 80 in 1982 could still some 39 years later still have such a profound effect. The epic sounds, soaring vocals, and lyrical refrain have made the song rock n roll royalty with it inspiring Bruce Springsteen, No Doubt, Everclear, Grinspoon, AFI, and The Audreys amidst many to cover it. A song that still sounds vital and fresh thanks largely to Mark Opitz's timeless production. A song that still elicits the heart, mind, and soul to invest in every line. A song that truly still enables an emotional connection each time it plays on the radio. So, this week we dig deep into just what, why, and how this song has become the classic weapon in INXS' catalogue and share its greatness to you, our listeners. Living with Ovarian Cancer' is a Podcast full of inspiring stories told by Women or their loved ones, who themselves have lived with, or are still living with Ovarian Cancer. Each Woman's story is a gift; unique and is told from the heart in their own words. I am your host, Diane Evans-Wood. In this episode I am honoured to be talking to Audrey Oldham who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer initially after a routine mammogram. She later developed Ovarian Cancer that was completely unconnected to the Breast Cancer. Audrey describes what made her see her GP after having bowel issues for a while that she thought was IBS. Audrey has been through such a lot since her Husband died at the age of 44, but she tells me how she stays positive and how she adapts to change. Audrey keeps a Blog on FaceBook, which I have added a link to for anyone wanting to keep up with her news. Audrey describes a therapy that she has been having called Hyperbaric Oxygen which helps her to stay well. It was lovely to chat to Audrey; she was so full of positivity and has adapted to many changes by embracing life. Robert talks about Audreys young life before and during The Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. More than anything Audrey loved to dance so her thoughts of dancing helped her through the hunger and the horror. Audrey actually danced and was given money which she promptly gave to The Resistance. Learn about her hunger, her Nazi sympathizers parents. Her father was held in a jail in England during the war. He later was exiled to Ireland which like Switzerland was neutral. Her mother met Hitler and was like a giddy schoolgirl. She kept her autographed gold frame photo of she and Hitler til the end of her life. In the beginning days of the takeover of the Netherlands her mother had a nazi boyfriend. She allegedly stopped in 1942 being a sweetheart to the Nazi's. Audrey loved her parents but was horrified as well.  As an adult Audrey did not talk much about her days in World War 11. She would always remember a specific act of the Nazi's that was perpetrated against her uncle and 4 more innocent men.  Audrey also lent her help to the United Nations. Her last trip to Somalia had been very hard on her. Soon Audrey was diagnosed with cancer and died. She was an amazing woman and Robert captures her life so vividly.    Thanks so much To Robert. Welcoming myself back! Took the summer off to focus on myself and the family as when school is out, routines do not exist much in our household. But most important this introduction of Mrs Audrey Robert is a passionate young individual in the CrossFit world. What makes her so special is the experience of being an athlete to motherhood. As many know the transition from not having a child to having one is massive and life-changing! The importance of sharing this part series is sometimes as a new mother (if you’re not engaged in parent groups) we can feel very alone in our feelings and they’re not always positive. Sometimes we have postpartum and don’t even know it. Which will create a small space within ourselves. But being a new mother isn’t always a bad thing as our bodies are meant to bear children. It does so much for our body physically, internally and for our well-being. There is something about creating a small human inside of us that develops this unconditional love you may not have experienced before. In my own experience, I never knew I could love a human being more than I love my husband. Which was very interesting to me. That’s when I realized there was all sorts of love. There is something also to be said about pre-pregnancy body, pregnancy body and post pregnancy body. The changes physically happens so fast that sometimes it’s hard to digest it all within that period. This obviously looks different for every woman but what we need to consider is that it just takes time. And whatever it looks like for you as an individual that is your journey and I encourage you to do everything you can to capitalize on that! I’m happy to be back and excited to share Audreys journey with her brand new daughter Victoria-Rose ❤️❤️❤️

Welcome back to episode 2 and this week we have a bumper edition full of inspiring women. My first guest really epitomises what Out of the Bubble podcast is all about. I am beyond excited to welcome Tricia Stewart, the driving force behind the alternative WI calendar back in 1999, which went on to become a global phenomenon and to date has raised over £5 million for the Bloodwise charity. You may have bought the calendar, watched the Calendar Girls film where Helen Mirren plays Tricia or seen the stage version or musical but now it's time to meet the lady behind it all. Motivating song/music- Fall on me by Andrea Bocelli. Favourite Book- The Wrong Boy. by Willy Russell. Who inspires you? My mum, she had 5 kids, she didn't have me and my twin brother until she was 46, she never seemed older than any of the other mothers. She was fabulous. If you'd like to know more about Tricia you can visit www.wicalendargirl.com and for more information about all the important work the Bloodwise charity do please go to Bloodwise.org.uk As if that's not enough inspiration we then get to go behind the scenes from this years MacMillan Charity fashion show in Ilkley, which I have volunteered in for the last ten years. This event has raised literally tens of thousands to date and I genuinely love meeting up with all the volunteers each year. I thought it would be fun to hear from some of the brave women that take part each year to find out why they said yes and what they get out of it. I'll be back in a fortnight when I will be joined by journalist Marina Gask, co-founder of Audrey on line. We get to chat about the lack of representation of older women in the media, what's behind Audreys #generationrestart and changing direction later in life. In the mean time....keep being fabulous! Cookie Baker is an incredible singer-songwriter and I am bloody thrilled to have Cookie as my special guest this week. Welcome to Episode 25, we are still alive! Happy quarter century to us. Cookie Baker has shared stages with many esteemed Australian artists, including Augie March, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ben Lee, Angie Hart (Frente!, a previous guest on this show, check out her episode here), Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Little Birdy, and The Audreys. Her album will be released in 2019 following the release of three singles, Little Engine (which has an amazing video!), The Summer (with Tim Rogers) and Don't Start A Fight. Cookie begins by telling me about her upbringing in rural South Australia, performing concerts to her family on the front veranda through her Young Talent Team microphone. Fast forward to 2019 and now Cookie helps to run an artist's residency with her family on a neighbouring property called the Ballara Art & Lifestyle Retreat - Artist Residency Program. Once a year for the past 5 years Cookie travels to California to mentor with the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, which reminded me of Melbourne's own Rock and Roll High School which began in 1995 right here on Easey Street, Collingwood! The very same street where More Than A Whelan is recorded every week at Castaway Studios! Rock and High School was visited by many alt rock luminaries including L7, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, Sonic Youth and The Breeders. You can read about its amazing history and achievements here. I also ask Cookie about If You See Her, Say Hello, a Melbourne based all women choir collective founded in 2015 by Cookie. I've been lucky enough to see several performances by this collective, all of them stunning. Including this 2016 show as part of the Brunswick Music Festival, where you can see Cookie fronting the choir herself. At the same show Gretta Ray performed her original song Blank White Canvas with the choir. Gretta has gone on to huge things since then, recently performing on stage at Rod Laver. Cookie Baker's upcoming full length album has been slow cooking over the last ten years. A digital only release is slated for mid year with a limited edition vinyl lp coming out in late 2019. To keep up with all things Cookie Baker keep an eye on her website and follow her on Instagram. I ask Cookie about her thoughts on the #metoo movement's impact on the Australian music industry, in light of recent news of Ryan Adams bad behaviour. *CLARIFICATION: I say that up until now the #metoo movement 'hadn't involved musicians much'. What I actually meant to say was 'high profile, internationally known musicians.' It has in fact already involved many local and international musicians. And rightly so. WHELAN & STEALIN' I read a poem mysteriously sent to my address with a beautiful leaf in the envelope, by sender unknown! But I believe was written according to the prompt The Journey of a Leaf by Ag. If you would like to see a picture of this poem and a very beautiful leaf head to the More Than A Whelan Facebook or Instagram pages. And please like or follow us or rate and review us while you do! I also read work from an upcoming guest on More Than A Whelan, Ruth McIver. I read an excerpt from her book The Sunset Club. Really looking forward to having Ruth on the show! Cookie Baker weighs in also for Whelan and Stealin' with a stunning cover of Glory Box by Portishead. This week I respond to the prompt 'Detroit' by Shane Jesse Christmass by writing a poem about... Detroit. Thanks Shane! You are our official More Than A Whelan Muse of the Week! You'll be getting some sweet MTAW merch coming your way care of our good friends at Luxe Country. And that's a wrap for Episode 25! Please visit our Luxe Country store for exclusive More Than A Whelan merchandise. Thanks to their generosity proceeds from their sales go back into keeping us alive. Nej, menar psykologen Jonathan Haidt. Men varför kom hon tillbaka hit då? Petra Glimåker-Socolovsky
