Itamar Zorman — Violin Odyssey (First Hand) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Itamar Zorman by Like many musicians during the pandemic, Israeli violinist Itamar Zorman found creative ways to continue performing. He and his wife, pianist Liza Stepanova, created a live-streamed video series, Hidden Gems. It was that video series that inspired Zorman's latest recording, Violin Odyssey. Why are you calling this project Violin Odyssey? “Somehow the geographical scope of this music merged with time. I realized that I was featuring quite a few continents. Since this was a time where I could not travel, it was nice to do the traveling via music. I decided to go for something that evokes the journey.” How did you select the pieces on this recording? “These are all pieces that are personal favorites of mine by composers who deserve to be heard. Some have gotten more attention than others. For example, the composers of the first and last tracks of the CD are people who have rightly gained more attention. Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz is a virtuoso violinist and great pianist. One of her pieces start the album and she has become more popular during the last couple of years. The same can be said about William Grant Still. I am playing this wonderful piece, arranged from the original called Summerland.” How does Wandering, a work composed by your father, Moshe Zorman, set the tone for the album? “Every journey starts from home. It was appropriate to do something by my father, especially something I had an influence on. He made the piece into a violin and piano duet because of me. He did that so I could play. He took the title from a collection of short stories by Hermann Hesse's book Wanderings.” Tell me about Erwin Schule's Sonata for violin and piano.  “The score is very funny. It has illogical meters and smiley faces. It is incredibly fun to look at. He also has a piece called Sonata Erotica. He really went all over the place with his compositions. He wrote this second sonata and became really interested in jazz and folk music in his 20s.” Tell me about Dora Pejačević. “Croatian composer Dora Pejačević is somewhat of a hero because of her music. She also volunteered as a nurse during World War I even though she was born to a noble family. She was really a part of her people. - Sama Grażyna kiedyś powiedziała: w mojej muzyce jest dużo energii, dużo się dzieje, jest energiczna, ale również liryczna. Tego liryzmu w jej muzyce też jest sporo - mówiła w Programie 2 Polskiego Radia Małgorzata Gąsiorowska, autorka książki o kompozytorce.

Het begon met de uitnodiging van het tv-programma Podium Witteman om een nocturne van Lili Boulander uit te voeren op Internationale Vrouwendag. Wat volgde was de lockdown van maart 2020. Ook voor violiste Merel Vercammen en pianist Dina Ivanova viel plotseling alles stil. En zoals het voor veel meer mensen geldt, ook voor hen was deze ongewone situatie ook een kans: ze besloten zich te gaan verdiepen in de muzikale erfenis van Nadia Boulanger, de oudere zus van Nadia. Toen Merel ontdekte dat Nadia les gegeven heeft aan een van haar favoriete componistes, Grazyna Bacewicz, was het idee voor dit album geboren. Lili was de talentvolste van de twee zusjes Boulanger, zij won de in Frankrijk felbegeerde Prix de Rome, wat haar ouder zus net niet lukte. Die was een paar jaar eerder runner up. Nadia besloot toen de rest van haar leven te gaan wijden aan lesgeven en het propageren van de muziek van Lili. Want die stierf op de schrikbarend jonge leeftijd van 24 jaar. Nadia groeide uit tot de belangrijkste pedagoog van de 20e eeuw. Tientallen beroemde componisten zijn bij haar langs geweest, ze was bezeten van het lesgeven, dat enerzijds bestond uit de kneepjes van het vak, zoals contrapunt, maar anderzijds uit een scherp ontwikkeld gevoel voor de eigenheid van haar studenten. Alleen zo kan je verklaren dat zeer uiteenlopende componisten als Leonard Bernstein, Astor Piazzolla en Bacewicz bij haar tot bloei zijn gekomen. Bacewicz is een grootheid in Polen. Ze heeft veel geschreven voor de viool, en omdat ze zelf violiste was, ligt de muziek bijzonder lekker voor het instrument. Haar muziek is in zijn kleurenpracht beslist frans te noemen, maar heeft ook een eigen kleur: fris, speels, en een beetje gek. Deze 'ontdekking' maakt het album alleen al zeer de moeite waard.

Today I am talking to pianist Peter Jablonski. We discuss piano repertoire in and outside the canon, how careers take time to develop, and wonder about the influence of social media on the longevity of a career in music.Peter Jablonski is an award-winning internationally acclaimed Swedish pianist. Discovered by Claudio Abbado and Vladimir Ashkenazy, and signed by Decca in his seventeenth year, Jablonski went on to perform, collaborate, and record with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Kirov (now Mariinsky), La Scala Philharmonic, Tonhalle Zürich, Orchestre National de France, NHK Tokyo, DSO Berlin, Warsaw Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Cleveland Orchestra; Vladimir Ashkenazy, Valery Gergiev, Andris Nelsons, Daniel Harding, Kurt Sanderling, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, and Myung-Whun Chung. Jablonski has performed and recorded the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Bartók, and all ten piano sonatas by Prokofiev. - Widać, że Bacewicz miała niesamowite doświadczenia jako pianistka. Udzielała też lekcji gry na fortepianie i wykonała m.in. koncert Mendelssohna w Filharmonii Łódzkiej. Nie mogła jednak robić wszystkiego, wybrała więc kompozycję i skrzypce. W pewnym momencie musiała z tego fortepianu w pewnym stopniu zrezygnować - mówiła pianistka, która nagrała nowe interpretacje utworów fortepianowych Grażyny Bacewicz.

Album Grażyna Bacewicz. Sonaty skrzypcowe. Jakowicz i Bednarczyk ma m.in. na celu przybliżenie postaci i sztuki kompozytorskiej znakomitej artystki. Ostatnia Sonata na skrzypce i fortepian to dzieło wybitne, a mało popularne i rzadko wykonywane. O płycie i twórczości kompozytorki opowiadali skrzypek Jakub Jakowicz i pianista Bartosz Bednarczyk. 

-To jest francuski instrument z połowy dziewiętnastego wieku z Paryża. Jego brzmienie bardzo pasuje do muzyki Bacewicz i zgrał się z czasem - to było pierwsze nagranie. Bardzo to miłe uczucie, trochę jakby nowy ja. Często tak jest, że zapominamy o tym jak ważny jest instrument pod palcami muzyka. - O nowym albumie "Grażyna Bacewicz - Sonaty skrzypcowe Jakowicz i Bednarczyk" muzyk opowiadał w audycji "Wybieram Dwójkę".
