Im Frühling 2024 können die Beastie Boys und all ihre Fans zwei schöne Jubiläen feiern: Im Mai 1994 erschien eines ihrer besten Alben, „Ill Communication“. Mit drauf: Sabotage“, diese wütende Anarcho-Hymne mit 70er-Jahre-Krimiserien-Video. Und im Juni 2004 kam „To The 5 Boroughs“, eine Ode an ihre Heimatstadt New York. Der Big Apple Melting Pot hatte die Kombo gerade zu Beginn geprägt: Ende der 70er, Anfang der 80er flossen in NYC die damals neuen Musikrichtungen Hip Hop, Punk, Post Punk und Dub ineinander. MCA, Ad-Rock und Mike D inhalierten all das und spuckten es auf ihrem Debut als Rap Rock („License To Ill“) und auf dem Folge-Album als Sample-Meisterwerk („Paul's Boutique“) wieder aus. Später fügten sie dieser speziellen Melange noch u.a. Grunge, Bossanova, Jazz, Boogaloo und Indische Musik hinzu – ihr Einfallsreichtum war schier unerschöpflich, ihre Herangehensweise immer zutiefst respektvoll und positiv. Bis MCA aka Adam Yauch im Mai 2012 viel zu früh verstarb – die Beasties waren Geschichte. Die Geschichte der Band haben sie niedergeschrieben in einer Anthologie, ihrem „Beastie Boys Book“. Musikjournalist-Kollege Vincent Lindig hat Adam Horowitz und Michael Diamond 2018 dazu interviewt. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE WTF?!? That's what goes through my head every time I think of the Beastie Boys. ONE because how is it these self-described funky-punky idiots were one of the main acts that changed the face of music in the 1980s? TWO because how did they then become well respected innovators, outspoken activists & legends, with a long career to rival the biggest acts of any genre? THIRD because how can it all be over?!? So much of the Beastie Boys story makes no sense that it almost DOES make sense that one of them would be dead, and almost a DECADE AGO. But no, not even that computes. These were three guys – great friends, bandmates & collaborators – who always came back together, no matter what happened in the interim. Unexpected successes. Career pressures. Explorations beyond the bounds of accepted form. Life changes. Hiatuses that seemed to go on forever but were way shorter than, say, the wait for Chinese Democracy. No matter what happened, they always came back. And then Adam Yauch died. The soul of the band the way Terry Kath was the soul of Chicago. The difference is while Chicago soldiered on and reinvented in both clever and disappointing ways, the Beasties – now Adam Horovitz & Mike Diamond – realized that carrying on without MCA would NOT be the Beastie Boys. So as usual, when Dumb Death gets in the way, we're left with memories & reissues & the hopes for more funky innovation crushed. I respect Ad Rock & Mike D's decision to shift gears, and love that they put out such a freakin' comprehensive love letter to music, their awesome threesome-ness, and Adam Yauch that is their 2020 mega quad pack Beastie Boys Book, the documentary Beastie Boys Story, the compilation album Beastie Boys Music, and Spike Jonze's photo tribute Beastie Boys. It was an explosion of beautiful energy that I can only hope results in more. As for the actual music, License to Ill is deep in my DNA. My music wouldn't be my music without it. Their next three albums moved – LEAPED – the hip hop & general music conversation forward in three different ways, with Ill Communication being my fave because it was a distillation of all three of them. Plus I just love mid ‘90s hip hop. Hello Nasty proved they could top the charts fifteen years out, and was their personal favorite. To the 5 Boroughs reminded me why I love NYC so much, and has lyrics I remember to this day. And Hot Sauce Committee Part Two reminded everyone else that they were in complete command of both creation AND the charts straight to the end. You wanna hear their influence on me? You have to be fluent in plumbing, electricity, chemistry, physics, and even psychology, to name a few. Our job never gets boring. We are always learning and taking on new challenges. One of the duties that I didn't mention in the list above was sales.  It doesn't matter what you are doing in your job; you are always selling something. It could be your service, yourself, or even the actual account. To be successful in water treatment, we must all sell.   Our guest today is Bryan Gray. Bryan teaches others how to sell more effectively by using the psychology we know about the brain. He also addresses why we need to be concise with our sales messages to navigate through a multi-person decision.  Today, it seems that with the internet, everyone is an expert.  So, Bryan helps us understand how to address that and how to use that to our advantage. Jessica Powell was the top communications executive at Google when she found herself Googling, in no uncertain search terms, how to quit her job at Google. She tried approximately 837 different tactics before she ended up taking the leap, and now she’s a startup founder, a contributor to Medium and The New York Times, and the author of The Big Disruption, a novel about a giant Silicon Valley tech company. The eventual burnout and dissatisfaction Powell experienced is not unique in Silicon Valley, she tells us on this week’s Gadget Lab podcast. But it can be difficult to acknowledge when you’re working in an industry filled with mission-driven companies and leaders who want to “change the world” (and in some cases–––they do). Powell also talks about the commercialization of International Women’s Day, and speaks candidly about Facebook’s latest manifesto around privacy. “Facebook is in such a bad place that I feel like if they cough, people say, ‘That cough is just a way to get more data!’” Powell tells the Gadget Lab hosts. “There are so many conspiracy theories, and sometimes you just have to realize a cough is just a cough. Greetings, true believers! Welcome to Episode 43. Hope you liked the Stan Lee tribute we did in the intro. We were going to talk about his death a lot more but ran out of time. So unfortunately you just get the intro and a few words at the end. Sometimes it's not good to bury the lede. RIP, Stan. You'll be missed by many. Before we give you the breakdown, we'd like to apologize for the sound quality on this episode. We had to record in a different fashion than we normally do and as a result, you will hear a lot of background noise and things that we'd normally be able to mute out. With Steve being sick on this one, you'll hear a lot of hacking. We normally use 2 vocal tracks and can edit that stuff out.
