Ep. 286 Carey Wallace - Inspiration from Beyond: Encountering God in Creativity

Shifting Culture

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2025 55:08 Transcription Available

Today, we're diving into something profound: how creativity connects us to the divine. I'm talking with Carey Wallace about inspiration—not just as an artistic concept, but as a spiritual practice. What if art isn't something we manufacture, but something we receive? What if creativity is actually a way of following God, even when we don't realize it? Wallace argues that inspiration comes from outside ourselves—that it's a gesture of surrender, a way of opening ourselves to something greater. We're going to explore how every act of creation can be an encounter with the divine. Whether you're a painter, a writer, someone working a nine-to-five job, or just someone trying to live creatively—this conversation is about discovering that we're all makers, created in the image of a creative God. We'll talk about how inspiration works, why art can be worship, and how surrendering to something beyond ourselves might be the most powerful creative act we can make. If you've ever felt stuck, wondered about your creative potential, or sensed there's something more to making art than just skill, lean in. This is a conversation about seeing the world—and yourself—differently.Carey Wallace is the author of The Discipline of Inspiration: The Mysterious Encounter With God At The Heart of Creativity (Eerdmans), The Blind Contessa's New Machine (Penguin), and The Ghost In The Glass House (Clarion). She works to help people from all walks of life find inspiration and build strong creative habits to sustain a lifetime of creation. She performs as a songwriter, exhibits her own fine art, and has spoken on art, faith, and justice with students at Princeton, Julliard, Emory, Pratt, and Yale. Her articles and poems have appeared in Time, Detroit's Metro Times, and America. She is the founder of a retreat for artists in Michigan, and the Creative Discipline Class to form strong creative habits, which has been in operation for over a decade across the US and internationally. Bringing you stories each week from all over Michigan, we are proud to be celebrating our ten year anniversary at Behind the Mitten in 2025!Ten years is a big deal, and we'll be highlighting other businesses and events throughout 2025 that have reached this milestone. Want to find all of our 680 or so episodes? You can find them here: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/behind-the-mitten--1278287This week, you'll get to meet Stephen from Batch Brewing Company in Detroit and hear just some of the ways they've figured out how to make it to year ten, and how the Corktown community has supported them. He'll also pick BEER OF THE WEEK, a new/old feature that we've brought back for our ten year anniversary, and how fun, it's a collab. Batch partnered up with our friends from the north in Canada, Badlands Brewing to whip up a tasty little brew. You can currently try Batchland, a New England IPA. brewed in collaboration with Badlands Brewing Co. in Canada. Flavors & aromas of tropical fruit, and it comes in at 6.5%. If you are going to Winter Beer Fest, be sure to seek out this beer, or else you'll need to go to Corktown to try it, which we highly recommend. Our friends at Bobcat Bonnie's have also been part of the Corktown neighborhood for ten years now, and owner Matt shares his perspective. In addition to regular dining, Bobcat's offers up a great brunch every weekend Matt will explain why he put his first Bobcat in the historic Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, and how they have grown, changed, grown, contracted, and still keep on serving up delicious food in a fun, accepting environment.Owning a business is hard. Running a restaurant is incredibly hard. Matt doesn't pull any punches, and has been very honest not just about the current situation facing our local spots, but also about some of his failures, and how Bobcat Bonnie's is always working to be better. If we want our locally owned restaurants to survive, we have got to eat at them, to save them. Please go eat at Bobcat Bonnie's!We'll also have on Liza from Mudgie's Deli & Wine Bar who have been making some of the best sandwiches in the entire state for seventeen years. Hear how Mudgie's is an anchor for Corktown, and about those sandwiches too, which holy smokes, are pretty incredible and most of metro Detroit agrees. They've won all the awards, for years, for decades. For example, they've been named the 2022 Classic Restaurant of the Year by the Detroit Free Press, the 2010-2023 Best Deli in Wayne County by the Metro Times (fun fact, I was once on the cover of the Metro Times!) 2013-2021, 2023, Hour Detroit Best Sandwich Shop. Needless to say, they are legends, and we were lucky to have Liza on to join us.

Punk like I remember it when I was a youth. Coming from a small town in Canada my ideas were not always the sharpest, but music helped me. I remember going to Dr. Disc in Windsor Ontario and picking up copies of the Metro Times from Detroit - Talk about an education. In the 80's and 90's learning about new music was not so easy and leaving your mark was even harder. Lot's of the of the bands on today's shows came from those days. I've been exhausted!Jeff Milo has been working in libraries for more than half his life. Jeff started creating content for the Ferndale Library's social media accounts within his first month on the job and more than a decade later, he's still finding inventive and engaging ways to inform & excite people about their library, its services, and its many resources. Like literally any library staffer, Jeff wears lots of hats--he helps coordinate programming for adults, heads the library's Art & Exhibitions Committee, and hosts/produces the library's podcast, "A Little Too Quiet." Jeff holds a degree in journalism from Michigan State University--a degree he utilizes in his position as Ferndale's Marketing Coordinator, but when he's off the clock, he's also a reporter-at-large for 101.9 WDET FM and an infrequent contributor to the Metro Times. This interview is more conversational and less formal than my previous ones as Jeff and I know each other from co-op meetings, conferences, and trainings we've attended! The Video: [After THE JUMP: Things discussed.] -------------------------------------------- 1. Colorado State Preview Starts at 0:10 They took Nevada! The transplant is going to take some time but we think they'll be decent eventually. They imported the most important parts of what was going to be Nevada's offense, including a slot bug, Melquan Stovall, who's going to give Rod Moore or Mike Sainristil all they can handle. Last year's CSU is basically useless for scouting purposes except their DT and LBs gave Iowa the business. 2. Ben Mathis-Lilley starts at 14:57 Inspired by an MGoBlog post, Ben Mathis-Lilley set out to write a comparison of college football cultures until his publisher said Michigan fans read books. So he wrote The Hot Seat: A Year of Outrage, Pride, and Occasional Games of College Football. You are in it! You can buy it here. New Yorkers: He will be at the Dram Shop with Jane Coaston on September 13th. 3. Offense After Previewing starts at 30:47 Offensive line: forgot how young these guys were! Admit that they might not have been the #1 OL if you go over the course of the entire season; the voters of that award clearly got excited for Ohio State. But so did we! Brian and Seth go back and forth over whether Erick All is a star. Receivers don't have a hole—going to be hell to figure out how to stop them. More of a believer in McNamara now. 4. Defense After Previewing starts at 53:42 Alex thought athleticism vs the spread was the main reason Colson kept getting out there instead of Hill-Green. Brian doesn't say it's going to happen but if a DE does pop it is probably Derrick Moore. More optimistic about a lot of defenders, including Mazi Smith and DJ Turner. Featured Musician: Detroit/Ann Arbor's Summer Like the Season (band's site, instagram) is a 2022 Kresge Artist Fellow form whom I was very late to the party (read about them on Metro Times). I sent a message, and lead singer/drummer/guitarer Summer Krinksy replied from a umich.edu address. The trio's vibe is sorta Metric, sorta St. Vincent, very DIY, and our clips can't do it justice because they build songs like how I try to write—taking different elements and teasing them until they all come together in a crescendo that makes sense. Songs: “Root Mean Square” “Steps” “Hum”

The $400 million worth or so of development happening at the State Fairgrounds site in Detroit with the new amazon distribution center has turned a lot of heads. The project promises to create as many as 2,000 jobs at the amazon facility; not to mention the developments nearby on the same parcel. But it’s not without some questions and pushback. The part we’ll talk about today, since the fairgrounds is a site with generations of history. Should the long-standing buildings like the coliseum and the bandshell be preserved somehow, instead of demolished? And what about transit connections? A quarter of Detroit households don’t have a car and buses are a way lots of people here get to work. Our feature conversation raises some questions and gives us some historical context. Dave Gifford is a regional community and transit advocate who also has a passion for music. He wrote an interesting piece that appeared on medium and in the Metro Times about it that's gotten a lot of traction. And Amazon has a response, too. Find Dave on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TransitGuideDET also https://twitter.com/DE_Gifford Then, I’ll share three things to know around town: Including an update on coronavirus relief in Michigan, Marathon is looking to create a green zone near their Detroit refinery, and an update on community benefits money on Detroit’s east side.

Brad Greenhill, Chef and Owner of Magnet and Takoi in Detroit, talks with Jewell Dziendziel about his vegetarian dishes. Magnet was awarded Design of the Year 2019 by Eater and Takoi was awarded Best Restaurant 2018 by Metro Times. Magnet, a “veggie centric” restaurant with a heavy Mediterranean influence is different from Takoi's Thai fusion focus. Guests will experience Brad’s passion for cooking with live fire and incorporating science into each dish at Magnet. Brad discusses Magnet’s concept, the design of the space, and the feedback they’re getting from the tip free policy. Brad talks about how Magnet achieves simplicity with just two pieces of equipment, a wood fire grill and a wood fire hearth. With his own diet, Brad “flirts” with vegetarian and vegan dishes, but doesn’t fully commit and this has led him to create a restaurant where veggies are the spotlight.  Brad and I also chat about the struggle with vegetable options while dining out and the trends of vegan food that aren’t necessarily healthy. Brad explains Magnet’s use of mold spores and fermentation to add extra umami to each dish. And let’s not forget, Brad reveals his food pet peeve!  Magnet is located at 4842 Grand River Ave, Detroit, MI 48208. Magnet is taking time off in August to recalibrate and refocus their next moves, but Takoi is offering carryout, delivery, and casual patio dining in Core City park. Advocate, Educate, Inspire Episode 44: Concentrate Consistencies & Weedmaps Top 20 In this new episode, Cannadave & Groovee talk about recent updates in the Michigan Market, the top 20 medical dispensaries in Detroit, and also what are the different types of concentrate consistencies?  We break all this down in our talk, find out what concentrate Cannadave & Groovee like! The first topic is the Michigan Adult Use market is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. We have over 200 Million in sales and tax revenue for the state of Michigan in its first 7 months of legalization.  Where do we see it ending up this year? Cannadave thinks half-billion! What do you think? Groovee has a different opinion. Tune in and find out.  With the new cities going to adult-use sales like Wayne in Michigan it's only going to increase the cities revenue from legal cannabis.  The Top 20 dispensaries in Detroit by Weedmaps was released by the Metro Times. The Michigan Supply & Provisions was ranked number one by Weedmaps. We personally haven't been to any in the top 5 and we will be checking them out in the near future. We thought the Reef Detroit should've been ranked higher than what it was and we noticed a couple of shops we go to weren't on the list. One of them was 5 and dime and also Cookies Detroit. Overall it was a good article just needed clarification on how they ranked the list and why they are ranked in certain spots. The final topic Cannadave and Groovee discusses concentrates.  What are concentrates? What is the different consistency of concentrates? Why are there so many different concentrates and what makes them different?  We go into all these topics and show some samples of them in our video which is on Youtube.  The different consistencies of that we talked about are Rosin, Shatter, Live Resin, Cured Resin, Diamonds, Sauce, THCA, Diamonds & Sauce together, & Crumble. All of these are made differently and go through some similar techniques but not all.  Most of these concentrates are made with solvents compared to Rosin which is made with just a press and its solventless. Solventless means there are no impurities or chemicals that made the concentrate. They are usually done with water or a press to get your bubble hash and Rosin which are solventless concentrates.  Find out what Cannadave and Groove like best! Ostensibly,Silence is the absence of ambient audible sound, the emission of sounds of such low intensity that they do not draw attention to themselves, or the state of having ceased to produce sounds; this latter sense can be extended to apply to the cessation or absence of any form of communication, whether through speech or other medium.Professor Margaret Montoya purports that silence has many meanings. It signifies different things in different cultures. It also changes depending on the context. Concomitantly, one thing for sure Silence can mean many things especially in interpersonal relationships. It's ambiguous. It can express lots of different emotions ranging from joy, happiness, grief, embarrassment to anger, denial, fear, withdrawal of acceptance or love. Garnering 3 million-plus streams and the acclaim of NPR, Paste, NME, Metro Times and more by 2019, the sonic alter ego of Michigan native, singer, producer, and guitarist Jason Singer bottles the feeling of the region on the 2019 EP, Where Do We Go From Here [C3 Records]. Jason brought Michigander to life during 2014 while moving across his home state to Kalamazoo. In 2016 the independent single “Nineties” took off, claiming real estate on multiple major Spotify playlists and cracking 1 million streams on the platform. Between releasing the 2018 Midland EP, the group shared the stage with the likes of Ra Ra Ra Riot, Tokyo Police Club, Twin Peaks, and JR JR in addition to gracing the stages of festivals with alt-j, Solange, Foster The People, and Run The Jewels, to name a few. Signed to C3 Records, he recorded Where Do We Go From Here and expanded the sound in 2019 as illuminated on singles such as “Misery” and "Poplar", of which the later saw placements on Spotify's The New Alt, Fresh Finds, and Rock'n Vibes. In this special New Year episode Sal and Bob travel to Arlington, Virginia to eat and crack wise at Ray's The Steaks (say that fast and you'll get it). The One Hit Wonder is Lou Bega's “Mambo Number 5” and the boys talk about Lou getting in trouble for stealing the melody from a 1940's hit. Bob's Whine List contribution is people clogging up his gym with their New Year's resolutions. Sal and Bob welcome their guest, movie critic and standup comic, Corey Hall (@CoreyHallComic). Corey livens up the show with his spot-on pop culture references, and his takes on who will take home the Golden Globe Awards. It's just a bunch of silliness, as usual, with Sal and Bob. Decarceration Nation (with Josh and Joel)

Josh and Joel discuss the problems with prison food. The story about the Alabama Sheriff who spent money allocated for food for his jail prisoners to buy a beach house is pretty unbelievable but 100% true. Yup, I was part of the lucky group of inmates who got to "brown bag it" for a few months at the Macomb County Jail. Hey Kool-Aid! I think it is awesome that inmates all over Michigan donate the vegetables grown in their gardens to food banks, I just think the program should be expanded to include fresh vegetables for inmates too. This is the article in the Atlantic magazine discussing the high-level of pathogens in prison food compared to food in the general population. You can find the data the Atlantic magazine discussed in this study in the American Journal of Public Health. There are lots of post-mortems on Michigan's privatization experiment. Here is one from the Metro Times. This well-researched Prison Policy Initiative article makes the long-term vs. short-term argument about the health care externality in serving unhealthy prison food to inmates. Judge Quist's decision, detailing the extensive legal barriers to getting prisoner relief for poor quality foods, is reproduced here. Believe it or not, this article in Corrections One magazine agreed that good prison food is a safety issue. This University of Michigan study demonstrated, through extensive interviews with Michigan Correctional Officers, that Michigan's experiment with privatization was a disaster. I mistakenly referred to a Correctional Officer as a guard, we never call CO's guard as a general rule (because they don't technically guard anyone). This is not just snark, it is actually not their job to guard inmates.
