Lessons Learned for Vets

We welcome back to the microphone, Bob Newlin, who joins us on this episode to reflect on his transition after hanging up the uniform 18 months ago. Bob's diverse career in the United States Air Force included time in the USAF band and as a defense attaché, most recently to Ukraine. His transition wasn't smooth, especially with the added challenge of transitioning from overseas. However, his transition has been successful. Today, Bob works in quality assurance at Bristol Myers Squibb. For those of you who may be wondering how a former musician and defense attaché successfully landed a role in a different career field, you'll want to download this podcast!Bob started his transition planning about 8 months from his retirement date, although he took TAP for the first time 2 years prior. When stationed in Ukraine, Bob took advantage of taking TAP again, this time online, during the COVID-19 pandemic. While overseas, he began his PMP certification. Although that's not the direction he pursued, learning the language of project management has helped him in his current position. Bob created a profile on Recruit Military and was contacted by Bristol Myers Squibb for a position at a new facility in Massachusetts. After tailoring his resume for the position and researching the company to verify the culture fit his values, he applied and was hired 48 hours after the interview. His position at Bristol Myers Squibb is centered around a brand-new technology, cell therapy. After reflecting on his time in the military, he understands that his new job provides him the same sense of fulfillment and service to others. He encourages others to take the time and understand what matters to them in a job after the military. If you are looking to pivot in your career, Bob highly recommends setting up profiles on Recruit Military, Bradley-Morris, Hiring Heroes and Hire Military. Seek out veteran hiring events, research attending companies and come prepared to market your transferable skills. Bob took the initiative to find his authentic self after he left the military. Asking himself the following questions helped to guide him into the next chapter. How do I want to present myself? How do I want to appear as a veteran? How do I want to participate in the veteran community? The average age of military entry is 18-25. Bob states, “You were shaped by the military and now you have the opportunity to explore your persona, beyond the uniform.”Bob used the model of three concentric circles to guide him toward a new career path. He reflected on what he is good at, what he is passionate about and what he can get paid for. Where these intersect was the starting point for his journey into quality assurance. Herb Thompson said, “You have to own your own journey.” For Bob, being successful doesn't mean there aren't challenges or bumps in the road. Success is finding a fulfilling role. Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22.You can connect with Bob on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-newlin/Listen to Bob Newlin on Season 1, Episode 27 by clicking here.Explore Recruit Military at https://recruitmilitary.com/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this to other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!

SUMMARY   Paul Mayo joined the Air Force and chose to be a missileer upon graduating from the USAF academy.  He shares a tidbit of how life underground can be while operating missile silos and how he decided to transition out of the Air Force after 5.5 years of service.     Paul's spouse is currently serving in the Air Force and approaching 20 years of service. This is one of the reasons Paul chose to leave the service. The various geographical assignments each would have while serving would keep them apart.  In 2008, Paul transitioned out of the military with the help of the Transition Assistance Program and joined his wife in England.   His civilian career path started in England where he worked as a director of team programs at a youth centre.  A move back to the US, lead Paul and his wife to Travis Air Force Base where Paul utilized the services of a military and veterans staffing agency called Bradley Morris to enter the oil and gas sector.  A slowdown in the oil sector and a move to Boston lead Paul to a business development role at Globe Composite Solutions.  He is now based in Hawaii and continues to work for ESCO Technologies subsidiaries - Globe Composite Solutions, Westland Technologies and Vacco Industries.     EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS   00:01:45 – 00:07:24: Paul shares his Air Force career as a missileer and his decision to transition out of the military to become a “trailing spouse.”   00:07:25 – 00:19:04 Follow Paul's career path starting in England as a director of programs at a youth centre, on to California where he joined the oil and gas sector before taking a business development role with Globe Composite Solutions in Boston. Paul continues to play a role in the ESCO group of companies from his home in Hawaii.    00:19:05 – 00:20:10 Paul and Gene discuss finding balance.     Your Move   Show resources: The military offers an amazing path for learning and moving up but no such clear path for moving out. Each person has to take the lessons from service and make the decision to retire when the time is right for them. How they synthesize the courage, competition and coordination the military teaches will determine their ability to succeed. You've had guides along the way. And you can see what I mean from some of my favorite quotes from the conversation!“Don’t short change the skills you have, because it’s not JUST what your MOS is. There are underlying skillets that you can extract from your experience in the Marine Corps”“The biggest lesson I learned in transition is to not be afraid! It’s ok to try something and fail!”Don’t try to replicate the past!Leland talks about his experience with utilizing the headhunters like Lucas Groups, Bradley Morris, or Orion, similarly to how I had (don’t wait till they contact you… reach out and let them know you’re interested in their help). We also talk the awkward moment when people “Thank you for your service!” We talk about a separation of Enlisted vs. Officers as it pertains to employment, and how career progression is not outlined in the civilian world isn’t like it is in the service…You now have the control of your destiny… USE IT! Shout out to Arleen Graves for setting this up!----------Show NotesSome tips you may want to take into consideration pulled from the conversation:• Learn humility• You need a good balance of leadership and rapport• Get out before your stop having fun• Use the veteran LinkedIn benefits and used the allowed LinkedIn Job Seeker badge• Use your terminal leave as a buffer between the military and getting back into the job force• Taking chances on opportunities, in aspects to employment• “You have a right to get a feel where they want you to work!”• “If you can, don’t sign anything till you have the opportunity to feel what the company culture is like”• You CAN make demands as it pertains to accepting a job offer! BUT they must be statements and not “wishy washy” mentions…• Take the time to break down your roles in the military instead of you’re overall MOS. The small things such as maintaining your own inventory, can turn into a resume bullet point of something along the lines of, “Responsible of $780,000 of government owned gear. most civilians have never been in charge of that kinda of price tag.• Be Ambitious, but be realistic…”

David Dorfman is the Southwest Sales Leader for Tektronix. He transitioned out of the Navy’s shipbuilding Project Management community into a role that he quickly realized wasn’t the best fit. He found his way to a career in sales where he was able to find his true calling, working in some of America’s top R&D laboratories to service their needs for testing and measurement equipment. We talk a lot about the early mistakes he made as a civilian, including a costly mistake he made with his first hire. David’s experience really highlight the importance of a solid hiring plan when hiring for a critical positions, and specifically the costs to the business and customers within a sales territory when you’re not able to ramp up a new hire in the expected timeline. Bradley-Morris has tackled this topic in the past, specifically when we hosted our Contingency Webinar about the cost of slow time-to-fill. With some big changes in the job-seeker landscape these days, it’s going to be more important than ever for companies to have a plan for how their organizations will continue to drive growth while managing their needs for full-time employees. Getting this wrong can result in lost productivity, a huge management headache, and unhappy customers. At the end, David shares some advice for job seekers who might be about to transition; everyone's story is going to be different. If you find yourself in a rocky situation, take a breath. The adversity faced in the first few years, the things you will learn about yourself and your professional skills will be worth the frustration. Rely on the fundamentals you learned in the military: hard work, perseverance, and mental toughness.   Connect with David on LinkedIn

Tom Wolfe joins me for the 50th episode of the podcast to discuss his book Out of Uniform: Your Guide to a Successful Military-to-Civilian Career Transition. Tom and I share a lot in common, we’re both Naval Academy graduates who served as Surface Warfare Officers aboard ships and subsequently transitioned to careers in military placement and talent strategy. Tom and his firm Career Development, where he was a Principal for 29 years, became a part of Bradley-Morris in 2007. During that time, Tom produced a variety of written and video content that was in use throughout the candidate preparation pipeline when I was a candidate from 2011 to early 2012. His Career College for Candidates video series shaped my early understanding of the process as a candidate, and later became the foundation of my advisory practice when I became a Candidate Recruiter in early 2012. Tom's knowledge and insight into military-to-civilian transition provides a sound model for making career decisions during transition from active duty, as well as throughout your career beyond transition. I was glad to mark the 50th episode of the podcast by having someone on whose advice is not only meaningful in a general sense, but personally meaningful to me throughout my career. Matthew J. Louis is an expert in career transition for veterans and public service professionals. He coaches individuals on their transition efforts and advises employers on hiring programs designed to successfully assimilate these valuable talent pools. He is the author of the forthcoming book Mission Transition, a practical guide for veterans in transition and their employers. In this conversation, we had a chance to hear some of his advice from the book, through the lens of his own transition story which began in the mid 90's with business school. When I reflect on the conversations I've had with other officers about what to do outside of the military, I struggle to imagine a more successful or competitive path than that which Matthew has followed throughout his career. His perspective on transition is also a compelling approach to career management and self-promotion in general, and follows a deliberate model to walk job-seekers through the process. I was also surprised at how closely his advice aligns with the advice I've given other officers who were working with Bradley-Morris during their transition. Having seen a sneak peek of his manuscript, I found myself nodding my head as I was walking through his process step by step. If you're interested in learning more about his upcoming transition guide, check out this episode! If you want to learn more about where to find your copy, go to Matthew's website by clicking here.

Kirk's time at Capstone Turbine has exposed him to a variety of roles and functions, leading to his current title as Senior Vice President of Manufacturing. Capstone manufactures a comprehensive lineup of clean-and-green microturbines that are able to run on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels ranging from Natural Gas and Propane to things like Landfill Gas or Aviation Fuel. This flexible fuel format along with their small size and modular design allow these power-generation turbines to be located remotely or within a distributed power generation grid in order to meet customer needs for power production wherever or whenever their work necessitates. During our conversation, Kirk and I talk about his transition and the process of rising through the ranks and promoting to his current role as an operations manager. We cover certifications and academic credentials that he was able to tackle while still on the active duty, and how he was able to take his aviation flight-line experience and bring that into this new manufacturing environment while also developing a brand new set of skills.

Today's episode touches on the value of confidence and personality in the interview process, and how those factors can be rehearsed and honed to help veterans who are usually great communicators learn this new type of communications discipline that is speaking to civilian hiring managers during the interview. We also hear a great example of where Brian made a critical mistake during an early interview by asking the wrong questions, but how that mistake set him up to provide guidance and mentorship to hundreds of fellow officers once he eventually found his role here at BMI.

Meditation and conscious breath practices have been two of the most transformative habits I've created for myself and so I went on to teach nearly 400 workshops in the last four years. I felt limited by just teaching workshops and wanted to reach more people, so From The Plumber's Wife to Business Makeover Expert!  Once upon a time, Ellen Rohr almost sank our family business. I assumed I knew enough about business to run a dinky little plumbing company. After all, I had spent about $100,000 of my parents' money on my college degree in Business Administration. In fact, I graduated at the top of my class. Still, I didn't know how to balance a checkbook! I got involved in my husband's company after his partner died unexpectedly. Boy was I humbled! It seemed like lots of money was moving through the company, but at the end of the month there was never any money left. Thankfully, I found terrific mentors, savvy contractors who taught me how to keep score in business, how to put a simple business plan together, how to make money.
