--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/malickmdiabategmailcom/message

Emma Hakansson always thought of herself as an animal lover, but her actions didn't always align. Emma was on exchange in Sweden when she made the connection with the animals on her plate. A year later at age 16, Emma went completely vegan and started attending demonstrations and volunteering with animal rights organisations. At the same time, Emma began modelling through an agency as she enjoyed the aesthetics and creativity involved. She quickly became conscious of her values and felt a sense of duty, care and love for everyone on earth - human and non- human animals, and the planet. All these issues came together and Emma decided to work towards creating ethical fashion by founding a non profit organisation called Collective Fashion Justice (CFJ). CFJ's objective is to create a total ethics fashion system that values and protects the lives and wellbeing of human and non-human animals, as well as the planet.CFJ recently released a mini documentary called "Willow and Claude" which follows the lives of two lambs, highlights injustices in the wool industry, ethical knitwear and alternatives fabrics. CFJ also works in collaboration with other organisations such as Animal Justice Party fighting for a ban on the sale of fur in Melbourne and Victoria. In this episode, Emma shares her experiences in the modelling industry, fostering lambs, working collaboratively to achieve common objectives and how to source total ethical fashion items as a consumer. https://emmahakansson.com.au/https://www.collectivefashionjustice.org/https://www.willowandclaude.com/https://goodonyou.eco/https://www.instagram.com/hakamme/https://www.instagram.com/collectivefashionjustice/

Christophe Deloire’s career trajectory is impressive. He ran one of the leading French journalism schools, the CFJ, from 2008 to 2012, and was an investigative reporter for the politics and society sections of the French news magazine Le Point from 1998 to 2007. He has also worked for the TV channels ARTE and TF1, made documentary films, edited several authors and written several bestsellers. Christophe is currently the General Secretary and Executive Director of Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Calling in from France, Christophe shares how we can all support great journalism.I’m excited to speak with Christophe to learn more about his work. We also discuss developing a standard for journalism, focusing on market regulation not content regulation, the role of blockchain technology, and having a good process in place to combat the spread of fake news.Links Mentioned Christophe’s LinkedIn RSF index 2021 Reporters Without Borders The Forum on Information and Democracy The Journalism Trust Initiative
Whilst working as a model for vegan fashion brands, Emma Hakansson began to realise that there wasn’t a non-profit organisation focussing on expanding the ethics of the fashion industry. Having developed experience in the non-profit sector for most of her working life, Emma decided to bring that organisation to life through the founding of Collective Fashion Justice. In this episode we chat with Emma about CFJ’s goal of creating a total ethics fashion system and what this term means, as well as the environmental, non-human and human cost of the industry. We also discuss some of the organisation’s strategic goals for the future to bring this hopeful vision to life, and draw attention to some of the startups doing innovative work in the space. Your host Antony recently appeared on the 'Classic Film Jerks' podcast to take a comedic but still analytical look at the Beatles’ first film ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. Is it a classic? You can probably guess what I thought but what did Michael and Andrew from CFJ conclude after their first watch? The intro to the show contains more information on the upcoming documentary ‘Finding Claudio’ that was mentioned on a recent show and which concerns the strange young man who came to England to ‘look in John’s eyes’ and who John engages with outside his Tittenhurst Park home in the famous clip from 1971. That clip and a link to the documentary website are in the show notes. Enjoy! Proposition 15 on the November 3, 2020 statewide ballot would generate billions in new funding for schools and other local services by changing the way commercial and industrial property taxes are assessed. How would Proposition 15 work? And how is the campaign shaping up?In this episode, guests David Goldberg, Vice-President of the 310,000-member California Teachers Association (CTA); Saa’un Bell, Strategy Director for Californians for Justice; and Tim Gage, longtime fiscal policy expert and former director of the State Department of Finance take us on a journey into the heart of Schools and Communities First.A broad-based coalition of organizations have been driving this effort. Proponents say the initiative would revise Proposition 13 (passed in 1978) to require larger, older corporate and commercial property owners to pay their fair share in property taxes. When fully implemented, the measure would generate about $11.5 billion in new revenues for education and community services, with public schools receiving about 40 percent of those new dollars. Throughout our series, we’ve examined how California, which once ranked among the top states in per-student funding prior to Proposition 13, slid into a decades-long school funding decline. We repeatedly pose the question: What will it take for California to get back among the top-spending states, so we can provide the level of resources that research shows all students need to succeed? Proposition 15 may be a critical component of that answer.ABOUT OUR GUESTSAn educator for more than 20 years, CTA Vice President David B. Goldberg has spent most of his career as a bilingual teacher at Murchison Elementary in the Los Angeles USD. In addition to serving two terms on the CTA Board, he also served as treasurer of the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) and was the youngest executive officer to ever hold office in that union. As a former English Language Learner student from Long Beach USD and first generation college graduate, Saa’un Bell is committed to building a public education infrastructure where all students have opportunities to fulfill their highest aspirations. Saa’un joined CFJ in 2009; currently, she oversees all communications & narrative strategy for regional and statewide campaigns. Listen to more from Saa'un about LCFF.Principal and co-founder of Blue Sky Consulting, Tim Gage is a highly regarded public servant, having spent over 24 years as a top fiscal advisor in both houses of the California Legislature and as the Director of the California Department of Finance from 1999-2003. The goal of The Win Your Life Podcast is to illuminate the intersection between prevention and performance. The fitness industry is focused on performance and not always concerned with prevention. On the other hand, our health care system is focused, by necessity, on combatting the overwhelming amount of disease, illness and injury in our society. At the intersection of prevention and performance, there is a group of coaches, medical professionals, business leaders, athletes, and thought leaders that are working to help you Win Your Life. In this series, we are addressing the idea of 'Universal Prescriptions', the notion that there is a best way for us all to exercise, eat, sleep, breath and live. In this episode, I sat down for a conversation with University of St. Thomas Psychology Professor Dr. Jhon Wlaschin. Jhon and I share a passion for data, fitness, and performance. I wanted to get Jhon's perspective on these topics as a Professor of Psychology. We also discuss Jhon's own journey with health and fitness, including his heart surgery and passion for the sport of squash. 1:52 social psychology (https://www.simplypsychology.org/social-psychology.html#:~:text=Social%20psychology%20is%20the%20scientific,or%20imagined%20interactions%20with%20others.) 3:00 history of squash (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squash_(sport)#:~:text=Squash%20has%20its%20origins%20in,more%20variety%20to%20the%20game.) 3:44 cholesterol and heart health (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/symptoms-causes/syc-20350800) 4:43 triple bypass surgery (https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/coronary-bypass-surgery/doctors-departments/pdc-20384590?mc_id=google&campaign=1709229304&geo=9019552&kw=%2Bbypass%20%2Bsurgeon&ad=335655550295&network=g&sitetarget=&adgroup=62894399890&extension=&target=kwd-671698693817&matchtype=b&device=c&account=1733789621&invsrc=heart&placementsite=enterprise&gclid=CjwKCAjw57b3BRBlEiwA1ImytnPRQtmIjPIiy2Vre8VjWlAhcgpYrJJNBzeDjeZRBMd0Iv9h_ysU0xoCobQQAvD_BwE) 5:56 whoop (https://www.whoop.com/) 9:00 Lipitor and heart health (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/17506-statin-medications--heart-disease) 9:00 smoking and heart health (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/smoking-and-cardiovascular-disease) 13:15 plant based diet for heart health (https://www.mayoclinic.org/power-plant-based-diet-for-heart-health/art-20454743#:~:text=The%20power%20of%20a%20plant%2Dbased%20diet%20for%20heart%20health,Research%20says%20yes.) 13:30 Mediterranean diet for heart health (https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/why-the-mediterranean-diet-is-so-good-for-your-heart) 13:31 psychology of weight loss (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/mayo-clinic-diet/art-20045460) 14:11 carnivore diet (https://carnivoremd.com/the-carnivore-diet-start-here/) 19:58 ptsmn (https://ptsmnhealth.org/) , plucinski (http://northernveinscardiovascularclinic.com/) , Dan Buettner (https://www.bluezones.com/dan-buettner/) 20:45 power 9 and plant slant (https://www.bluezones.com/2016/11/power-9/) 21:45 cholesterol and plant vs animal based foods (https://www.webmd.com/cholesterol-management/features/cholesterol-facts#:~:text=Cholesterol%20is%20a%20type%20of,and%20high%2Dfat%20dairy%20products.) 21:48 fiber and plant vs animal based foods (https://www.today.com/health/americans-need-more-fiber-their-diets-wbna15938650#:~:text=Fiber%20is%20a%20carbohydrate%20that,beans%2C%20seeds%2C%20and%20nuts.) 22 cholesterol myths (https://www.ravnskov.nu/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/CM.pdf) 24 David Diamond on 'Deception in Cholesterol Research' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inwfSkSGvQw) 24:10 cholesterol and plaque stability (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3872716/#:~:text=Plaque%20stabilization%20has%20already%20been,reflected%20by%20reduced%20plaque%20volume.) 25:48 side effects of statins (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/statin-side-effects/art-20046013) 26:48 CHIP (https://chiphealth.com/) 29:50 flow (https://www.pursuit-of-happiness.org/science-of-happiness/?gclid=CjwKCAjw57b3BRBlEiwA1ImytruULPNFR8fW1fYIoVF1Dr0glS7W6Wbj2v6ch6Us6btNBy5-Oca-uhoCf7oQAvD_BwE) 31:48 Maslow (https://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html) 34 characteristics of flow (https://www.ted.com/talks/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_flow_the_secret_to_happiness?language=en) 34:30 skill and competency and 4 stages of skill acquisition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence) 37:57 thinking fast and slow (https://www.amazon.com/Thinking-Fast-Slow-Daniel-Kahneman/dp/0374533555) 46 10 general skills (https://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/CFJ-trial.pdf) 49:30 strain (https://support.whoop.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019453214-WHOOP-Strain) 61 Michael Phelps pregame routine (https://swimswam.com/michael-phelps-pre-race-routine/#:~:text=To%20fuel%20himself%20for%20the,feel%20ready%20while%20warming%20up.) 1:03 Conscientiousness (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/conscientiousness) 1:06 sleep schedule (https://www.nigms.nih.gov/education/fact-sheets/Pages/circadian-rhythms.aspx#:~:text=Circadian%20rhythms%20are%20physical%2C%20mental,a%20light%2Drelated%20circadian%20rhythm.) 1:07 alcohol and recovery (https://www.whoop.com/thelocker/podcast-43-alcohol-affects-sleep-recovery-performance/) 1:19 parasympathetic and sympathetic balance, tunnel vision (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK539845/) 1:25 Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and_the_Art_of_Motorcycle_Maintenance)
Why is California's Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) so significant? In this episode, we continue our journey through major milestones in school funding history with our first stop to LCFF-land. Special Guest Saa’un Bell, Strategy Director at Californians for Justice, helps us explore why the state’s shift to an equity-based system beginning in 2013 was so historic. The LCFF was a sweeping law, carrying with it a whole lot of hope and promise, especially for students and families who hadn’t always been heard or served well by the school system. It was a bold law that ironically has come to be known by its rather mundane four initials. There are many ways to tell the LCFF story: a research and policy side, a political side. There is the budgetary formula itself. But first and foremost, LCFF is the story of major change. Saa’un offers the perspective of both a statewide and local community leader who participated with a wide range of grassroots and community partners to help advocate for this change to a more equitable funding system on behalf of students and families.Saa’un helps us tell the “why” story – as in, why LCFF? She describes the work her organization and other grassroots groups did leading up to the LCFF – and the transformational change the new law, championed by former Gov. Jerry Brown, brought forward. LCFF targets additional funds to districts to support students from low-income families, English learners, and foster and homeless youth. Saa'un also shares examples of where student engagement in decision-making as a result of the LCFF has led to positive outcomes, and she discusses what still needs to happen to realize the full potential of LCFF. We also delve into some honest conversation about the connections between funding and race in California. Along the way we provide a brief explainer about LCFF's technical details and we explore one monumental thing that the LCFF did not do…cliffhanger…you’ll have to listen to find out.ResourcesLCFF Lesson from Ed100.orgCASBO school finance guide and LCFF Budget Toolkit California Department of Education: LCFF pageCalifornians for Justice: LCFF page EdSource: Local Control Funding Formula Essentials Guide. In the episode of The Reality Dysfunction Dr. Ernesto Mireles and Alex Yanish speak with famed organizer/author Ernesto Vigil of Denver, Colorado. Vigil was a leader in the Denver based Crusade for Justice and worked closely with Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez during the heyday of the organization. In his early 20's Vigil was the first Xicano draft resister in the Southwest and has spent the last 51 years pursuing justice for Xicanos in the United States. In this episode Ernesto Vigil will be talking about his forthcoming book titled Decades of Deception: the American Indian Movement, the FBI and the death of Anna Mae Aquash. Don't miss this riveting first hand account fully documented by one of the foremost scholars on the FBI's campaign against Xicano/Indigenous movements in the United States. ----- Vigil is also the author of The Crusade for Justice: Chicano Militancy and the Government's War on Dissent first published in 1999. Below is a description of the book: This definitive account of the Chicano movement in 1960's Denver reveals the intolerance and brutality that inspired the turbulent rise of the urban Chicano organization known as the Crusade for Justice. Ernesto Vigil, an expert in the discourse of radical movements of this time, joined the Crusade as a young draft resister where he met Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, the founder of the CFJ. Vigil follows the movement chronologically from Gonzales's early attempts to fight discrimination as a participant in local Democratic politics to his radical stance as an organizer outside mainstream politics. Drawing extensively upon FBI documentation that has become available under the Freedom of Information Act, Vigil exposes massive surveillance of the Crusade for Justice by federal agents and local police and the damaging effects of such methods on ethnic liberation movements. Vigil complements these documents and the story of Gonzales's development as a radical with the story of his personal involvement in the movement. The Crusade for Justice describes one of the most important organizations fighting for Chicano rights. www.waroftheflea.org

The Cult Film Club is proud to cap off the Summer 2013 TAG Network crossover event by inviting our first guests, two awesome Classic Film Jerks, into the clubhouse to discuss the 1998 neo-noir flick Zero Effect! We were graciously invited onto the CFJ show last week to discuss The Maltese Falcon, and so when we had Andrew and Michael in our place we figured what better way to bookend a look at classic noir than with one of our favorite cult mysteries. Starring Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens and Ryan O’Neal, the film centers on Daryl Zero, who is by his own admission the greatest observer the world has ever known. One part objective observer, one part detective, one part master of disguise, one part deluded rock star, and a full on emotionally damaged, reclusive hermit, Zero (Pullman) is like a modern day Sherlock Holm-body, solving mysteries from inside his hermetically sealed apartment. But his assistant, Steve Arlo (Stiller), has had enough, and for him the next case will be his last. That case, the case of the missing tycoon's keys, proves to be much more complicated than either of them bargained for as they weave their way through a maze of blackmail, revenge, murder, and even a bit of romance. In the episode we talk about the idea of ditching "who don-its" for "why theydid-its", Pullman's magnetic and wacky charisma, being famous for marrying a poster model, and the all too certain comeback of the pager. We take a closer look at the actors and then we all take turns recasting the flick for a more modern audience (and in one case retroactively for an 80s audience!)
