On today's episode of Fostering Change, Rob interviews Dr. Kristin Hoffman, Ph.D., Chief Program Officer and Child Psychologist and Chelsea Henandez, LCSW, Clinical Director of the All Star Children's Foundation. The All Star Children's Foundation, based in Sarasota, Florida uses a trauma-focused approach through innovation, science and compassion. They have an onsite campus, home to youth in foster care and their caregivers where they offer a number of evidence-based trainings to the community while emphasizing an understanding of trauma through a “trauma informed lens”.With so many youth in foster care facing trauma, they don't often get to someone who can help until it is much too late. This is where All Star Children's Foundation comes in and help the child make a shift away from trauma.Rob shares with Kristin and Chelsea that “the moment a child enters the system, they should receive some form of therapy.” They discuss the disservice done to children with so many group homes are shut down and how their campus was developed to create a “lasting change” to work with them the moment they enter care to make the feel loved and capable.”The All Star Children's Foundation is also planning their first “State of the Mind Conference” on September 21 to help the community understand trauma and how it affects everyone around. Jody Conradi Stark, Ph.D, is a board-certified music therapist with over 35 years of experience. Her work and research have contributed to that growing body and has impacted numerous populations including psychiatric, cognitively impaired, autism spectrum disorder, veterans, medical, and hospice. Jody is the site director of music therapy clinical services at the Michigan State University Community Music School, Detroit (CMSD), where she partners with the Children's Hospital of Michigan to provide music therapy through a grant funded by the Children's Foundation. Jody is also the president and founder of Creative Arts Therapies Inc., a company that provides contractual music, dance movement and art therapy services to agencies and individuals throughout Southeastern Michigan.“The American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program,” says Stark. “That's kind of long and wordy, but basically it's using music in a structured manner to improve the lives of all different types of clients and individuals.”What is it about the power of music that's so therapeutic in so many ways to so many people?“When words fail, music speaks. That's one of my favorite quotes, I believe by Hans Christian Andersen. There is something about music. It's happening in the here and now. It's nonverbal, and it's connecting us. I like to emphasize that therapeutic relationship. We connect with individuals, and we provide those transformative experiences through music. Music moves us. It engages us physically, emotionally, spiritually, and cognitively.”How has music therapy evolved?“One area that it's evolved in is the medical arena. We've got quite a body of literature and evidence that proves the effectiveness of music and music therapy. That has been an area that has opened up to music therapist as we've seen how effective it can be with patients, regardless of what we're addressing. We could be addressing pain control, working with children during procedures to help them to be calm, and to just simply normalize the environment in the hospital that can be quite scary.”Stark says she's fortunate to have been working at CMSD since it first opened in 2009.“What excites me about working at the Community Music School, Detroit is that we're really taking the outreach mission of MSU to individuals in Detroit and to people who may not be able to access music otherwise. "Our largest current grant is from the Children's Foundation, and it funds services at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. We are onsite at Children's Hospital. What's most important is our work at the bedside working with children individually.”Stark talks about how she plans and implements a music therapy session.“It's all tailored to the individual; no two sessions are alike. If I'm walking into a room and I am seeing a child for the first time, I know what they're in the hospital for. Situations can range from infants in the neonatal intensive care unit to older teenagers and even young adults who started their treatment at Children's and are maybe returning for chemotherapy or rehab. We understand what they are there for. If it's for rehabilitation or if they've maybe been in a car accident or had a traumatic brain injury, we would be on the rehab unit working perhaps to help a patient learn how to walk or learn to speak again.“If we're working with children on the burn unit who might be having burn dressing changes, it's more of an immediate intervention where we're trying to help distract them from the pain of those procedures. We're there to normalize the environment for the family and for the patient. It really is family-centered care and sometimes the family needs support certainly as much as the patients in terms of what they're facing with their child being hospitalized. So if I'm walking into the room and I have a sense of what I will be facing, I first and foremost want to introduce music therapy services and introduce myself. I want to give them a sense that I'm not there to do a procedure.“I'm there to provide something that maybe is more normal in their environment or in their lives, whether they play an instrument or whether they just enjoy music and love listening to it. Most adolescents and children do. Things we can do in music therapy include playing instruments, singing songs, composing music or songs about their frustration that they're in the hospital or what they miss about not being home. It can be listening to music. We can focus on relaxation, breathing techniques, and learning to cope with pain. It really runs the gamut of a number of different types of interventions.”Stark says her work is rewarding.“I am so passionate about my work. I love my work. I love that I've been able to work in a number of different settings and with a variety of populations and individuals.Sometimes our impact is immediate. If a child is at the hospital and in pain or crying and needs to have assistance with falling asleep or relaxation, we can help with that. It surprises me how quickly they can fall asleep and be able to have some relief from pain and have a chance to relax.”What do you suggest for someone who thinks they have a loved one or a friend or a family member who could benefit from music therapy? “Going back to that quote where words fail, music speaks, patients can benefit from an experience that is transformative, goal directed, and a stress reducer. Perhaps their loved one is elderly and is experiencing dementia. Often music elicits long-term memories. I've had elderly clients who could no longer speak. They lost that ability because of dementia, but they are able to sing every word to a song from their youth. We've had loved ones come to music therapy groups so they could see their loved one come back alive through music and dance and interact with them and see the joy that music brings when it elicits those long-term memories. Music impacts us physically, emotionally, and cognitively. So with the variety of goals that we focus on through music, I think certainly they should consider music therapy as an alternative.”MSU Today airs Sunday mornings at 9:00 on 105.1 FM and AM 870 and streams at WKAR.org. Lawmakers look ahead to the Governor's State of the State Address. We get perspectives on both side of the aisle on COVID response, vaccine roll-out and other issues. Then, the federal partnership with corporate pharmacies to vaccine the state's most vulnerable is lagging. We hear from the AARP on the state's progress getting Mississippi's oldest residents protected. Plus, a new report ranks the risk factors for children and youth in all 82 counties.Segment 1:Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves will deliver his second State of the State Address today from the Capitol, and some lawmakers are sharing what they would like to hear from the state's chief executive. Vaccinating Mississippians for the coronavirus tops the list for many on both sides of the aisle, with education funding and criminal justice reform also points of concern for many legislators. MPB's Desare Frazier hears from Rep. Donnie Bell (R) and Sen. Angela Turner Ford (D)Segment 2:Earlier this month, Governor Tate Reeves expanded vaccine eligibility to Mississippians 65 and older citing the high-risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19. But many of the state's vaccine appointments are filling quickly and a federal partnership with Walgreens and CVS is under-performing. Kimberly Campbell is Mississippi's State Director of the AARP. She tells our Kobee Vance while the flow of supply is lacking, the effort to prioritize older residents is resonating with their members. Segment 3:A new state-wide report is assessing risk factors and protective factors for Mississippi's children and youth. The Risk and Reach report from the Children's Foundation of Mississippi identifies the needs of children and youth as well as the available opportunities in each of the state's 82 counties - giving each county a low to high risk score. According to the report, 14 counties are considered high risk. Linda Southward, executive director of the Children's Foundation of Mississippi, shares the purpose of the report and its findings. Hospitals are expecting shipments of the coronavirus vaccine in an effort to protect frontline workers. Then, a new report details Mississippi's teacher shortage crisis and the dried-up educator pipeline.Plus, after a Southern Remedy Health Minute, we look at how children in the state are faring during the coronavirus pandemic.Segment 1:Boxes of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, packed dry ice, are arriving at hospitals in Mississippi. The initial allocation of 25,000 doses is being distributed throughout the state, and frontline workers and long term care residents are being prioritized. He tells our Kobee Vance the 975 doses they received will cover the front-line workers in system's three hospitals.Segment 2:Mississippi's public education system has faced unprecedented hurdles this year - with hybrid classrooms and virtual learning creating new challenges for teachers and administrators alike. But the pandemic is also highlighting one of the state's more persistent dilemmas - a critical teacher shortage. Now, a new study shows a sharp decline in college graduates deciding to enter the field of education, causing the state's educator pipeline to dry up. The report, compiled by Mississippi First, reveals the state saw a more than 30% drop in in-state college graduates becoming teachers within a four year span. Toren Ballard is the study's project director. He says legislative measures, like teacher pay raises, could help reverse the trend.Segment 3:Southern Remedy Health MinuteSegment 4:A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows children in Mississippi are facing serious hardship due to COVID-19. Issues like food insecurity, health care, poverty, and education have been amplified during the coronavirus pandemic, and, as a result, Mississippi's children are struggling to have basic needs met. A bill to improve distance learning is making its way through the legislature. Then, the latest State of the State survey examines voters' attitudes about government priorities and leadership during the pandemic.Plus, for the first time in three years, Mississippi dropped in the Kids Count Data Book rankings. We look at the reasons why.Segment 1:The coronavirus pandemic is highlighting the struggles rural and poor school districts are having to provide quality distance learning. The Equity in Distance Learning Act, passed by the Senate and now being considered in the House, is designed to address those disparities. The legislation would provide every public school student in Mississippi with a laptop or tablet, while improving upgrading current technology and wifi access.House Democrat Gregory Holloway of Hazlehurst is on the House Education Committee. He tells our Desare Frazier he hopes the act can help bridge the gap between Mississippi's rural districts and their more affluent counterparts.Segment 2:The latest Millsaps College - Chism Strategies, State of the State Survey comes during a time of heightened public health concerns and economic anxiety. The coronavirus pandemic has set the legislative calendar back months, and a shortfall in revenue means lawmakers will have tough decisions to make when drafting the budget for the next fiscal year. Brannon Miller is the Director of Voter Targeting for Chism Strategies. He says voters are keeping an eye how taxpayer money is being prioritized, and a plurality of them want legislators to protect funding for education. Miller shares this and more results from the survey with our Michael Guidry.Segment 3:For the first time in three years, Mississippi's ranking in the annual Kids Count Data Book decreased - falling from 48th to 49th in 2020. The rank is according to new data released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Children's Foundation of Mississippi. The four domains used in the national rankings include health, education, economic well-being, and family and community. Linda Southward is the Executive Director of the Children's Foundation of Mississippi. She tells us, despite it's low ranking, Mississippi showed improvement in many of the study's indicators. We talk in detail about how he lost the weight. Triathlete Mike Bernico isn't sure how much he weighed at his peak two years ago. His scale didn't go higher than 380, and the needle was pinned. "I was almost 400," guessed the technical analyst at State Farm Insurance Cos. He stood 5 feet, 10 inches tall and his waist was 50 inches around. Today, Bernico, 32, weighs 178 pounds as he prepares for the upcoming Tri Sharks Classic Triathlon at Comlara Park near Hudson on June 5. His body fat measures just 8.1 percent. His waist is 32 inches. Bernico made small lifestyle changes at first. "Like not having an entire pizza for dinner," he said with a smile. Better menus and portion control came next. At 330 pounds, he started strength training. He bought a recumbent bicycle trainer and started to spin his legs. His knee withstood the challenge. After a time, he bought a road bike and rode outside. By the end of 2008, he could go up to 60 miles at a time. That's when someone urged him to complete a triathlon, where participants are timed as they swim, bike and run. One of the fastest growing sports in America, participation grew by nearly 70 percent to nearly 1.1 million from 2006-2008, according to the Outdoor Foundation. USA Triathlon, the sports governing organization, had 53,000 members in 2004. That number is more than twice that today. Approached with the idea of being a triathlete, Bernico's response was, "No way." But he found a couch-to-5K (3.1 mile) training course that gradually ramps up running time and distance. He practiced swimming. He did a short triathlon in Sullivan in April 2009. Last June, he found himself on the shore of Evergreen Lake at Comlara Park with other triathletes ready to hit the water at the start of the Tri-Sharks Classic Triathlon, a sprint-distance race named after Bloomington's triathlon club. Athletes swim 600 yards, bike 12.5 miles and run 3.1 miles. McLean County is becoming a hub of triathlon and endurance sports in Illinois and the Midwest. The field of 600 fills up in a matter of minutes when registration opens several months before the event, said race director Colleen Klein. Bernico will be joined by his fiancée, Lana Fryer, 27, a Bloomington pharmacist, who will compete in her first triathlon. Mike Mikel of Bloomington also will do his first sprint triathlon. Mikel started bike riding and later added swimming and running to get back in shape before he turned 40. He signed up for the triathlon when he realized he was doing all three sports during workouts. "This (competing in triathlons) gives me another goal," said Mikel, who also is using triathlons as a way to raise money for The Children's Foundation of Children's Home + Aid, where he is a board member. (See the outdoor column on F-1.) The Children's Foundation will be title charity sponsor for the Tri Sharks Classic in 2011. As for Bernico, he plans to do an Olympic-distance race at the Evergreen International Triathlon July 17 at Comlara Park, where he placed fifth in his age group last year. Distances are doubled to 1,200 yards in the water, 25 miles on a bike and a 6.2 mile run. He also will compete at Steelhead, a half Ironman in Bentown Harbor, Mich., at the end of July. In 2011, he plans to complete an Ironman triathlon, which many consider the most grueling athletic test of all. The race tests the limits of physical endurance with a swim of 2.4 miles, a bike competition of 112 miles and a marathon distance run of 26.2 miles. Competitors must complete the entire 140.6 miles in 17 hours. Bernico, who blogs at http://iron-path.blogspot.com, weighs and logs everything he eats now. Those small healthy changes have led to a diet without processed foods. "I'm very careful," he said. Still, he exercises so much now he still loses weight even though he's eating a normal 3,000 calories a day. The irony amuses him. "I'll just have to eat more," he said, with a laugh. Perhaps more important than the weight loss is the attitude change that has accompanied his transition, he said. He's gone through tough times with a more positive outlook. "It's changed everything in my life," Bernico said. "It's brought a different perspective into things. I've learned about nutrition, staying active and healthy, but I've learned no matter how bad things get, no matter what happens, I can suffer through it. After you do a triathlon, there is nothing you can't do. It's the triathlete mindset." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -Flexible Option: if you simply want unlimited Q&A e-mail access to Ben Greenfield, it is $175/month. First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Listener Mike asks: My question concerns the timing of weight workouts relative to endurance workouts. What is the correct timing for hitting the weights if on the same day as a swim, bike or run workout? Should a strength session fall immediately after a ride or swim or with a few hours between? Should they be avoided on long days all together and fall on easy and rest days? It seems that introducing a couple of sessions a week on top of a full SBR schedule would put one in a constant state of tearing down muscle fibers with little time between to rebuild/recover. Listener Mike asks: I gave up smoking almost 17 months ago. Then within one month of stopping smoking ballooned out to 93kgs...Predominantly in my gut.. still skinny legs and arms..The whole time i had been going to the gym atleast 4/5 a times week.. doing a class (pump/step/spin/combat each visit)...The weight didn´t move.. neither did my 7 month pregnant gut (101cm). How do i get rid of this last 5kgs from my gut and will i have to keep doing gym for the rest of my life like crazy to be at my former weight and bodyshape when i was a smoker. Mike asks: I'm a triathlete in my second year of triathlon training. I've just completed my first 70.3 and I'm hoping to do a full next year. I'm 5'10 and currently weigh 178 pounds. I've been measured by the local university Exercise Phys lab at 8.1% body fat. I'm self coached. Three years ago I weighed over 400 pounds, and I've lost over 220 pounds eating right and exercising. My leg strength seems to be a big limiter. My legs always give out before my lungs do. I have great cardio fitness, with a VO2max of around 66 and a resting HR of 35. However, my bike FTP is only around 235, which gives me a power to weight ratio of 2.9 W/Kg. I've been trying to address this by doing intervals at 90-100% of FTP for 10 to 20 minutes 1 to 2 times a week. It helps, but I'm wondering if there is more I could be doing as the improvement is very slow going. I've only gained about 15W on my FTP since January. Do you have a question for Ben?
