This month's pilot is brought to you by the clutches of the pandemic! It's called Valley Trash written by Niki Schwartz-Wright (The Grinder, Speechless, The Office). Valley Trash was days away from going into production when the network shut it down at the start of the Covid lockdowns in March 2020. The pilot centers on The Harmans, a scrappy, blue collar family living in the deep Valley who suddenly experience a major culture clash when their fourteen-year-old daughter, Abby, gets accepted to a prestigious LA private high school filled with students and parents who want nothing to do with her, her family or their 818 area code. Valley Trash was set up at ABC with Universal TV,  Nahnatchka Khan (Fresh Off The Boat creator), and 20th Century Fox TV attached to produce. Jason Lee was also attached to star before the project was shut down. Luckily, Valley Trash has finally found a home here on Dead Pilots Society. We had a great cast for this one including Chris Tallman (The Thundermans) as Cal, Sophie Grace (Babysitters Club) as Abby, Jake Nordwind (SNL) as Benji, Jamie Denbo (F Is For Family) as Jules, Joy Osmanski (Stargirl) as Kay, Marcus Bishop-Wright (Out of Order!) as Armed Guard, Nola Bowie as Sydney Maybach, Moujan Zolfaghari (Last Week Tonight) as Suzanne Maybach, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. If you want to watch the video recording of this pilot, you can do so for as little as $5 by becoming a Maximum Fun member at maximfun.org/donateTune in next week for our interview with Niki Schwartz-Wright. Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2022 42:37

Thank you, Bill Heywatt! And greetings, honored soundcast listener! I am Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host, creator, and executive producer of this here Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Special thanks to my erudite and unflappable alternating host of this show, Tyson Saner. Those who follow this show closely enough – is that you? – might have noticed that we missed dropping an episode a couple weeks ago, then Tyson picked up the slack last week with Epi315, which should have been my episode the preceding week. Following so far? Well, here's what happened. I was traveling for business. Not Succotash business but my day-job business, and I was clipping soundcasts while I was on the road. Listening to shows on planes, editing them in my hotel room,a nd trying to get it all together. Then I got “Delta shitty hand” – our keen-eared listener heard what I did there – and I had a flight cancel on the last leg before home. Not just before home, but before I could return to the Nerd Nest and my precious soundcasting equipment. Short story long, I couldn't get ‘er done in time to make it worth dropping for that week. It was going to be a show devoted to comedy sports soundcasts so I had to shelve that for a future show. And Tyson, bless his heart, reshuffled the show numbers so that in the box score that is the Succotash archives, no one will ever know that I screwed up. And now I owe my colleague one. Cash it in anytime, Tyson! If you happened to miss episode 315, entitled “the 3-Clip Tango”, Tyson featured snippets from a trio of comedy soundcasts which included The Winnebago Boys, Oxventure - A Dungeons & Dragons Podcast, and The Todd Glass Show. It was really a lovely roundup and I'd urge you to jump back a week in our feed and grab yourself an earful. Access that episode from your favorite soundcast dispensary, including – and I'm going to give you a pretty complete rundown here: Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Audible, the Android app, Audacy, Blogger, Facebook, Gaana – not even sure what that is, iHeart Radio, the iPhone app, LinkedIn, Player.fm, PodBay, Pod Chaser, Radio Public, Soundcloud, Youtube, and now, after a lengthy boycott but now all is forgiven, back on Spotify. And, of course, every episode we've churned out over the last 11 and a half years can be scooped up in our archives at our homesite: SuccotashShow.com So now that I'm finally back in the saddle, what do I have in store for you for Episode 316, you might ask? Well, my sports comedy soundcast show I might do next time but for THIS week, as teased by Tyson at the end of the last episode, I have a Succotash Chat in store with none other than Blaine Capatch! Blaine is a standup comedian but oh, so much more. He's a writer, a sketch performer, a husband, a father, a son, and a druid. Well, he plays a druid on a soundcast we've featured here a few times over the years: Brian Posehn's Nerd Poker, a wonderfully funny and occasionally insane show where Brian, Blaine, and a clutch of other pals play Dungeons & Dragons. Before we get to the convo, I thought I'd set the stage a bit by playing a clip — since that's our main stock-in-trade here — from Nerd Poker and last week's action-packed episode. Beside Blaine and Brian, the rest of the cast includes Ken Daly, Sarah Guzzardo, Chris Tallman, dungeon Master Dan Telfer, and engineer Sam Kieffer. If you are unfamiliar with RPGs, that's Role Playing Games, and particularly Dungeons & Dragons, I can't help you. Well, I probably could – I've been playing since 1979 – but we just don't have the time. Blaine's and my acquaintanceship…acquantancy?… acquaintedness?… oes back a few decades to the San Francisco comedy scene which we talk about in our chat. All right. Without further ado, here is my chat with our special guest Blaine Capatch! Thanks to Blaine for jumping on the Zoomer with me for that. I would love to have the whole cast of Nerd Poker make their way in front of the Succotash microphones one of these days. Maybe I should Dungeon Master a game and invite them all to play! That could be cool and incredibly terrifying! One of the fun things their show features every week is, right after Dan Telfer thanks a bunch of their Patreon supporters, Blaine does a commercial from a variety of fake sponsors. Very much in the vein of our Henderson's Pants spots, but the advertisers are all different. Just to give you a sample, I went into their archives and slices out five different little ads he's read, and they sound a little like – no, actually, exactly like this… Blaine also makes funny, occasionally outrageous quips in real life, which you can can catch via his socials through his homogenous handles @BlaineCapatch on both Twitter and Instagram. In addition to NerdPoker.com, he's frequently a judge for Story Smash, the storytelling game show that's a spinoff of the Story Worthy soundcast from friend-of-the-show Christine Blackburn And, as he mentions look for him performing around LA in Lucha VaVOOM!, the burlesque and Mexican wrestling spectacular. Episode 316 is now officially over except for the outro and closing credits from Mr. Heywatt. Thanks again to our special guest this week, Blaine Capatch. Subscribe to us from any of your favorite places and Tyson Saner will be heading your way in this same feed next week with Epi317. My latest review in Vulture.com this Month in Comedy Podcasts, featuring Nikki Glaser guesting on Marc Maron's WTF is still up – there's a link to it up in the blog entry for this week's episode at our homesite SuccotashShow.com. And, other than that, if you happen to find a runaway dog wandering the streets and it seems friendly and you pick it up and read the ID tag and it reads, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

Hello and welcome to Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package, Episode 239. I’m your every-other-weekly host, Marc Hershon, and the chief purpose of this show – right after our prime directive: Entertaining YOU – is to support and promote comedy soundcasts AKA podcasts up, down, and across the internet. We started almost 10 years ago, in April of 2011, with the idea of spreading the word about soundcasts in general – which were having a little trouble gaining traction – and comedy soundcasts specifically because, well, we love comedy. And comedians. And the idea of being part of this exciting medium. Tyson Saner, who had stepped in for me as the regular host a few years ago, and I decided to start pumping out our show on a weekly basis for the first time since Succotash started. And we’ve been at that for nearly a solid year now. In fact, if you missed last week’s Epi238, entitled Clippin’s and Andy Dick, Tyson featured clips from a trio of soundcasts including the Jock Doc Podcast, Battle of the Bald, and Trashy Trashy. In addition, he had a quick chat with comedian/actor and professional gadabout Andy Dick. You can still hear the show via Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio or even at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com! This week it’s my turn back in the barrel and I thought it would be fun to go a bit “niche-y”. For many years — many MANY years, actually — I have been an inveterate player of Dungeons & Dragons, a popular version of what’s known more broadly as a tabletop role-playing game. Since the early 1970s, players have gotten together around a table, created various versions of fantasy fiction characters – like knights, wizards, and thieves – and played them in a variety of adventures all over seen by a kind of referee or Dungeon Master, if you will. The DM, as they’re known, basically runs the world in which the characters live and establishes the adventures these folks pursue in hopes of gaining treasure, defeating monsters, rescuing maidens, etcetera. During the past year, a lot of gaming groups – including mine - have had to adapt to the pandemic restrictions just like everyone else. And through online resources like Zoom, Skype, D & D Beyond, and Roll20.net, they have kept right on adventuring. There are a number of soundcasts dedicated to role playing – not just Dungeons and Dragon – and they have been able to muddle through. Some using programs and websites like I just mentioned and some have actually created socially distanced and safe studio space in order to keep playing in person. I wanted to give you a taste of what this somewhat different soundcast experience is like, so I went questing for a quartet of clips from The Adventure Zone, AllD20, Critical Role, and Nerd Poker. This episode is brought to you by longtime sponsor Henderson’s Pants and their new Scavenger Slax! Are you ready? Adventure…awaits! Nerd PokerOne of my favorite shows in the RPG genre is Nerd Poker, featuring a bunch of comedians and writers. The ringmaster is Brian Posehn, and the regular crew of campaigners include Blaine Capatch, Sarah Guzzardo, Ken Daly, Chris Tallman, and Dungeon Master Dan Telfer. We last featured these guys back in 2017 on Epi153 and, if I had my druthers, I would play with this group of lunatics. With so many jokers around the table (or the Zoom gallery), the adventures tend to move along fairly slowly because these guys are always breaking each other up. In this clip it take almost five minutes for Brian to get around to having his character – a monk named Donny – get around to swinging his sword on the enemy. AllD20The AllD20 soundcast is one I just started listening to and, while they’re a little bit more into their characters than the Nerd Poker folks, they still can’t help collapsing into cascades of laughter once in a while. It’s the nature of the game, as you know if you’re had a chance to play. They’re a D&D group in Las Vegas but they play in a homebrew world called Avlonia. I can’t find a listing for the cast but they introduce themselves and the characters they play at the top of every episode and they are having a ball. In this clip, the characters have been on trial and judgement is just now being passed on them… Critical RoleI am just scratching the surface of the role playing genre of soundcasts with this episode. Hard to do it all justice with just four clips and there are tons more games than just D&D. But there’s no way I can talk about this type of show without spinning a few minutes of Critical Role, a show that has a HUGE following and rightfully so. The entire crew, from the DM through all the players are, as they say at the top of each episode, “a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors”, and they get to strut their stuff every week for between 3 and 4…sometimes even 5 hours of game play. Matthew Mercer is highly regarded for his skills as a Dungeon Master, because of his storytelling and worldbuilding skills as well as his characterizations. You see, one of the job of the DM is to portray all of the various characters that the player’s characters meet during the course of their adventures. And the cast is wonderful: Marisha Ray, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Sam Riegel, Travis Willingham, Ashley Johnson, and Taliesin Jaffe round out the current campaign. I picked a clip from a recent episode where the adventurers who go by the name The Mighty Nein, are in the midst of fighting an ancient white dragon… The Adventure ZoneThe last show I’m clipping in this genre for this episode has ventured away from strictly playing Dungeons and Dragons but it’s manned by soundcast favorites the McElroys. Their list of shows is crazy, including My Brother, My Brother, and Me, Sawbones, Bunker buddies, Schmanners, The Besties, Can I Pet Your Dog? and a TON more. The shows are hosted by one or more of the McElroy brothers, their wives and even their dad, Clint, who is a key part of The Adventure Zone, along with brothers Travis, Justin, and Griffin, who serves as the DM for the games. I haven’t been following regularly so I’m not sure how they’ve ended up where they are today but it seems to be some kind of school and in this clip, the crew is bent on wreaking havoc in the name of justice…or something. Thanks you for letting me let my nerd flag fly high today. I’m going to give a shout out to the Demonbane, which is the name of the fellowship the players I DM every week call themselves. Remember that you can find links to shows and most of the people in them that we’ve mentioned here on Succotash Shut-In at the blog for this episode on our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com. Tyson will be here next week with an array of soundcast clips for you in Episode 240. And I’ll see you the week after that. In the meantime, remember to socially distance, wear a mask, wash your hands and, if anyone asks if you’ve heard any good soundcasts lately, please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

He is back next episode, we've recorded it and everything, his intense sexual energy will flow through our microphones again before you know it.

Secrets, secrets, secrets! Sadly we are without Chris Tallman and his intense energy both this episode and next (everyone went on Spring Break vacations this April and his was hardest to work around) but we promise more of him ASAP!

Yes, it’s me again – Marc Hershon – your host and commemorative beer stein for Epi130 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. And I got a passel of comedy podcast clips for you. Our ace associate producer Tyson Saner harvested some. I found a couple. And we got some uploaded directly to us from podcasters themselves, using the upload link at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. Podquest If you think you have a cool idea for a new podcast, don’t keep it to yourself. I’m saying you should tell me about it either, but you’re going to want to hang in for my chat with Julie Shapiro, who’s the executive producer with the Radiotopia network — they’ve got a baker’s dozen of shows occupying podcastland, including 99% Invisible, The Memory Palace, Song Exploder, and Mortified. But they're looking for more and they want a show that no one is doing yet. So if YOU have an idea for a show, or are doing a show that’s been bumping around, cloaked in obscurity, Radiotopia is sponsoring Podquest, the search to find that show. Julie and I talk about the contest and how you can get your concepts in front of their ears.  What's Up I’ll tell you whose clips we have on the show in a moment, but you should also know that we’ve got our Burst O’ Durst with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. Our show's brought to you by Henderson's new Hooray For Hollywood Pants, and we have a dip into the Tweetsack, where we FINALLY Have a couple of recorded calls from our Succotash Hotline. Plus I’ve got Cursed, a really cool musical piece that Tyson put together using bits and piece from The Todd Glass Show. Our Associate Producer continues to amaze me with his talents. And we have a SECOND musical piece from our acapellanist, Abner Serd, who brings us a seasonally-appropriate tune called Joe Mann, the Self-Rolling Snowman. The Clips As for the actual shows that we’re featuring clips from this time around: Cave Crew Radio, I Am Rapaport, Local Ass Bitches, Loud & Obnoxious, Obsessed, The Potato Bureau, Russell & Mudtooth, The Sketch Comedy Podcast Show, and Spontaneanation. As a blanket thing, the podcasts that we get our clips from can be found at their homesites — click on each show's title to be whisked there instantaneously — as well as on iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud, and a number of other podcast distribution points on the World Wide Web. I Am Rapaport: Stereo PodcastI caught actor Michael Rapaport on WTF with Marc Maron this past week. You might know him from his work – he’s been in over 60 movies and TV projects, starting with Zebrahead through last year’s Little Boy movie. He had a great arc on the second-to-last season of TV’s Justified, too. He and his best friend, Gerald Moody, kick out fresh episodes of the I Am Rapaport: Stereo Podcast every week, or maybe it’s twice a week. Rap and G, as they call each other, shoot from the hip on a variety of topics. I actually met Michael years ago, when I used to hang out at the Improv in LA, because he did, too – his sister’s step-father was one of the owners. Anyone, he always seemed a decent guy and I like what he has to say on his p’cast. A word of warning if you don’t like profanity — Rap and G speak the language of the streets. Oh, and they also take a certain measure of pride in the fact that they don’t fact-check their spew. SpontaneanationTyson grabbed us a clip from Epi49 of Spontaneanation, the latest podcast from the brain of one of the hardest-working men in podcasting, Paul F. Tompkins. It’s a completely improvised show, with a rotating cast of guest friends and performers. On the episode this clip is from, Paul’s guests are Cameron Esposito, Shulie Cowen, Brandon Johnson, and Chris Tallman. I’m a big fan of Paul F. but then, who isn’t? Potato BureauOne of our upload savvy listeners is Corky Kneivel, he of the Potato Bureau podcast. This week he shot us a scene clipped from their Epi2, featuring Court Hansen as the guy getting his dishes back, Molly Doan as “Darren” (the screw up), Corky's playing Darren’s brother, with Michelle Petro is the security guard who — spoiler alert — gets killed. The way the Potato Bureau "gimmick" works is that the scenes are somehow inspired by each episode's musical guest, which is where the sketch in this clip sprang from…) Loud & ObnoxiousAnother clip that was uploaded directly to us this episode comes from the crew over at Loud & Obnoxious — Korey H., D-Brew, Producer Dave, and Halfpint. First off, how can you NOT listen to a clip featuring someone named Halfpint, right? They’re part of the MenRule Network. Here’s their description of their show that’s up on iTunes: “They are four guys that don't apologize for speaking the truth. Each week they discuss movies, news stories, beer, politics, and sports. They also have their intern, Halfpint, do things that he is very uncomfortable with including karaoke and talking to girls.” Sketch Comedy Podcast ShowTyson clipped us something from a recent epi of the Sketch Comedy Podcast Show, which is about as descriptive a title as you can get in a podcast title. Also maybe a bit misleading, as the description for the show says it’s “Lightly scripted and improvised.” The hosts are Alisha Holland and Stuart Rice and the show booms out of Portland, Oregon. ObsessedThis next clip was ripped from the Tweetsack, having been dropped in there by Sarah Meyer who writes “I really enjoy your podcast reviews and I hope it’s not taking a liberty, but I’d LOVE it if you could take a listen to a comedy podcast I co-produce — 'Obsessed with Joseph Scrimshaw.'" It’s over on the on the Feral Audio network. The title is a little deceptive because it isn’t a show about an obsession with Joseph Scrimshaw — he’s the host and he talks to guests about their obsessions. In this case, the obsession is podcasts and the guest is Dustin Marshall, the founder and maniac behind the Feral Audio network, host to such shows as Harmontown, The Duncan Trussell Family Hour and Obsessed with Joseph Scrimshaw. Also, this is Joseph’s 100th episode of Obsessed, so congratulations!  Russell & MudtoothTyson clipped us off a hunk of the Russell & Mudtooth Show from the Radio Random Network. It features Russell Devlin McLain (or #RDM, as he’s socially mediatroducing himself these days), and Mudtooth. To me, “Mudtooth” is WAY more interesting a name than hashtag-anything, but maybe that's just me. This show drops every Friday and #RDM, who is a musician, tears up the country music scene, music in general, as well as sports, current events, etc., etc. with his pal Mudtooth. In this sample of the show, Mudtooth goes off on a tear about the most recent Oscars. Cave Crew RadioIn case you haven’t figured it out on your own, podcasters are not the only ones who can upload their clips to the show. If you are a LISTENER to a comedy podcast that you enjoy, you are cordially welcome to upload a clip, too! That’s exactly what Stuart Ramsden did recently when he uploaded us a chunk of Cave Crew Radio, which is great. Because who knows how long it have taken us to discover the hosts, DK and Big B on our own? And the show has been going for a tad over a year. (So way to take the inish, Stuart!) In this clip the talk is about Valentines and giving stuff up for Lent. Local Ass BitchesOur friend Davian Dent — host of the soon-to-be-defunct The Bitter Sound podcast and co-host of The Strange Times podcast — has sent in a promo of a show he enjoys: Local Ass Bitches, a comedy podcast I’d not heard before. Davian must really like the show, because he knows I’m not a fan of playing promos. He uploaded it directly to us via out Hightail link and he says, “Four best friends from Chicago talk politics, sex, dating and everything in between!  Born, raised and living on the NW Side – Lisa, Manny, Nora and Rosa are the epitome of Local Ass Bitches, a term coined by one of their comedic favorites, Kevin Hart, which now has its own definition in the urban dictionary. They also win the Davian Dent Award for being the sexiest mofo's in podcasting...” That’s it, friend. The Succotash tank is empty for another week or so. You can help us to keep the show going by clicking on the Donate button at our http://SuccotashShow.com homesite. Or else go there and click on the Amazon banner at the top of the page And visit the Succotashery, also accessible though the website, where you can get some garments or other gewgaws festooned with the snappy Succotash logo. Even if you can’t afford to give us any of your hard-earned money, the least you could do it to tell your friends about our show.
