Inside Sources breaks both situations down.  One day closer to a government shutdown Negotiations over a government funding bill have stalled, bringing the country one day closer to a shutdown. What’s stopping things this time around? Hosts Leah Murray and Adam Gardiner go in-depth on the latest efforts to pass a continuing resolution and fund the government.  On the Hill 2025: Previewing legislation on affordable housing The 2025 Legislative General Session is about one month away. We’re previewing several kinds of legislation ahead of the session; today we’re talking about housing. State House Representative Ray Ward will run a bill he hopes will cut through some of the red tape for building lot size and ADUs. He calls into Inside Sources to preview a few of his bills.  On the Hill 2025: Previewing legislation on quality drinking water We continue our preview of the 2025 Legislative General Session, shifting our focus to drinking water. The quality of drinking water is super important, so how do we make sure the water is safe? State Senator Scott Sandall is going to run a bill next year that would outline how water testing is funded. He joins Inside Sources to explain.  Pres-elect Trump sues Iowa newspaper over pre-election poll Just before the presidential election this year, the Des Moines Register – in partnership with J. Ann Selzer polling – published a poll showing Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the lead in Iowa. While she ended up losing the state, Donald Trump says what the paper did amounts to deception and election interference. We discuss the possible effects on polling and the media as a result of this lawsuit.   Trudeau’s Canadian government could collapse following Trump’s trade threats President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed policies on tariffs and trade is already causing issues with our neighbors to the north. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to be in peril over Trump’s threats, leading to uncertainty that his Liberal government will be able to continue. Biden to sign the Equal Rights Amendment Democratic lawmakers around the country are pushing for President Biden to certify the Equal Rights Amendment before he leaves office. While the 38th state to ratify the amendment did so in 2020, the deadlines for the amendment to pass have technically passed. So what are Democrats actually hoping to do? We hope you all had a fantastic holiday season and that you are excited about the New Year! We had a special guest join us yesterday to kick off 2024. We have been lucky enough to get to know a number of Senators, Governors and Congressional Representatives over the past few years. One that we have been getting to know better recently is Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana. Sharp, informed, well read, very funny, and representing a very important energy and industrial state, Senator Kennedy never disappoints when any public policy matter is up for thoughtful debate. We felt particularly lucky he took some time to brainstorm the coming year with us in this Special Edition COBT. As you will hear, Mike Bradley, Jeff Tillery and I explored a broad range of topics with the Senator including domestic and international challenges facing the United States in 2024, the divide in Washington regarding climate issues, Senator Kennedy's stance on climate change, the role of the government and private sector, the erosion of public confidence in institutions, and potential strategies for restoring that confidence. We also touch on the importance of leadership and transparent communication, power demand growth and infrastructure challenges, and the need to improve the understanding of energy-related issues in Washington. Senator Kennedy shares his perspective on the significance of the United States projecting strength and power and his optimistic outlook on American resilience in overcoming challenges. We are very grateful to Senator Kennedy for sharing his time and valuable insights with us all. Speaking of kicking off the New Year, we attended the Goldman Sachs Energy, CleanTech and Utilities Conference in Miami this week (agenda linked here). Arjun Murti spoke on a panel addressing “Where Are We in the Commodities Cycle?” I am biased but I thought he did a great job discussing why energy is so important globally, why energy broadly is an attractive sector, and why oil and gas peak demand is nearly impossible to predict. Overall, we saw many friends old and new, and increasingly perceive that Veriten's mission of “truth in energy” is gaining more visibility and support. Special thanks to Neil Mehta and the entire Goldman Sachs research team for having us and congratulations to them on a great kickoff to the year. We will return next week with the regular COBT schedule. We have a very fun “2-year Veriten Anniversary” show planned! Again, Happy 2024 and thank you for your friendship and support!

In this emotionally charged episode of "Pushing Forward with Alycia | A Disability Podcast" Dez Del Barba, a military veteran who became a survivor of medical malpractice after contracting necrotizing fasciitis during his basic training, showcases his unbreakable human spirt and shares his new passion for wheelchair tennis, where he's already won several championships. Dez contracted streptococcus A During his basic training, which, due to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment, evolved into necrotizing fasciitis. His condition rapidly deteriorated, resulting in the amputation of his left leg above the knee, severe damage to his right leg, underarms, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dez endured an astonishing 43 surgeries, spent 100 days in the ICU, and underwent months of grueling physical, occupational, and mental health therapy. Despite these unimaginable hardships Dez's story is one of resilience, determination, and triumph. He is not just a survivor; he's a fierce advocate for change within the military healthcare system. His journey from despair to becoming a champion athlete in wheelchair tennis is nothing short of inspirational. Dez's harrowing experience has turned into a mission of giving back through his nonprofit organization, Operation Dez Strong, which provides financial and emotional support to children undergoing amputations. Throughout the episode, we'll also discuss the pressing issue of medical malpractice within the military and the need for legislative changes to ensure accountability and justice for service members. What is necrotizing fasciitis? Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death. This flesh-eating disease occurs when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin. The condition spreads quickly. Symptoms include blisters, fever, fatigue, and pain worse than a person would expect based on the wound's appearance. Group A strep thought to be most common cause There are many types of bacteria that can cause the “flesh-eating disease” called necrotizing fasciitis. Public health experts believe group A Streptococcus (group A strep) are the most common cause of necrotizing fasciitis. This web page only focuses on necrotizing fasciitis caused by group A strep bacteria. Closing Message: No matter how daunting the challenges, Dez's journey teaches us that resilience, determination, and community support can lead to remarkable transformations. Keep pushing forward, one step at a time, and remember that you are never alone in your journey. Jill's Cauliflower Soup Recipe: EASY CAULIFLOWER SOUP INGREDIENTS 1 head cauliflower, about 2 lbs. Salt Pepper Unsalted butter (optional, recommended) - you can sub olive oil or a high quality vegan butter like Earth Balance, if you like OPTIONAL TOPPING IDEAS: Drizzle of olive oil or sesame oil, crumbled blue cheese, parmesan, za'atar YOU WILL ALSO NEED: Medium saucepan, blender Total Time: 10 Minutes Servings: 4 servings Kosher Key: Pareve or Dairy Remove the leaves and tough core from the cauliflower. Chop into small florets and carefully clean them. In a medium saucepan, bring 1 quart (4 cups) of water to a boil. Stir in 2 tsp of salt till dissolved. Pour in the cauliflower florets. Bring the water back to a boil and cover. Let the cauliflower cook for about 5 minutes till very soft and tender. Remove the florets from their cooking water using a slotted spoon; reserve the salted cooking water. Place the cooked cauliflower into a blender, filling it halfway. Carefully pour in cooking water, adding till it reaches about halfway up the cooked cauliflower. Cover the blender carefully and blend, scraping the sides as needed, until the soup becomes a smooth puree. You may need to add more cooking water to achieve a soup-like texture. The longer you blend, the more silky and smooth the soup becomes. Add salt, pepper, and butter to taste. I use about 1 tbsp butter (or I've used up to 2 Tbsp) for a whole head of cauliflower (1/2 tbsp per batch). Salt is your friend here, if the soup is tasting bland don't be afraid to add more. You can also add some good quality olive oil or Earth Balance instead of butter if you'd like a richer flavor without dairy. Also add ground fennel. Repeat process with the remaining batch of cauliflower. Serve soup hot. Leftovers will keep for 1-2 days in a covered tupperware container; soup will need to be stirred after reheating. Biden Administration Issues Title IX Regulations: Parental Rights at Stake

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2022 5:04

Earlier this summer, the U.S. Department of Education announced new regulations regarding Title IX, which is designed to ensure and protect access for women and girls in education. These new rules are 700 pages long and are being trumpeted by organizations such as the National Education Association as a victory for victims of sexual harassment and clarification of discrimination based on sex. However, what is meant by “sex” will be a disaster for women.  The massive document is infected with the presumptions of transgender ideology, specifically that “sex” includes “gender identity,” ignoring the biological reality of sex. Not only will these rules limit our daughters' opportunities to participate in sports and lead to dangerous violations of their privacy, but they will erase parental rights and free speech in favor of state-centered authority. There is a limited time to speak into these regulations before they are instituted.  In 1972, Title IX was enacted to provide equal access to education and athletics for girls and women. Recent reinterpretations of sex threaten the good goals of Title IX by turning reality on its head. In a recent meeting of ministry leaders, Vernadette Broyles, general counsel and president of the non-profit law firm, Child & Parental Rights Campaign, explained three major implications of this regulation.   The first concern has to do with the removal of parental rights. Minors who decide to transition at school will be supported by the schools and led into the process of “social transition,” including using preferred pronouns, without requiring the consent of parents. It's Broyles' belief that this will “weaponize” government agencies like Child Protective Services and channel these children to “gender-affirming” counselors and clinics, eliminating the influence of parents in the process. This is already happening in some states, such as California.  A second and primary concern is the remarkable damage that will be done to children's bodies and emotions by encouraging and furthering social experimentation. For example, in July, the FDA announced that puberty blockers, which activists claim are harmless, can cause brain swelling and vision loss. Their long-term cognitive effects are still being studied. We also know that cross-sex hormones cause permanent sterilization. And of course, that doesn't even get into what happens when things go “right” with the devastating permanent injuries caused by so-called “gender-affirmation” or “sex-reassignment” surgeries.   Finally, Broyles spoke of the scandal intrinsic to girls having no private spaces in locker rooms or on school trips, and the heartbreaking irony of women and girls' losing place to male athletes, all under the banner of Title IX.   Even if your state has already acted, as some have, to protect parental rights and girls' opportunities in sports, these rules will challenge state legislation at the federal level.  So, what can be done? Every American has the opportunity to submit comments on these new rules before September 12. Through bureaucracy, the Biden administration has skirted the legislative process and accountability to elected representatives as it did with the mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regarding insurance supporting “transgender medicine.”    When contacting Congressional Representatives and Senators about legislation, it is acceptable to use a copied script. In this situation, however, comments must be submitted through the Federal Register, the online journal that publishes the federal government's rules and regulations. Rather than a Senate staffer tallying positions for or against a bill, staffers associated with the Register look for unique comments. If thousands of people flood the Register with the same script, that repeated comment would be counted as only one.  So, please comment, in your own voice, laying out your specific concerns with these regulations. The Child & Parental Rights Campaign has provided multiple prompts—not scripts—to assist you in registering a comment. There are “comment starter letters” for parents, educators, and community religious leaders. In your comment, tell a unique story or specify your concerns for your daughter, son, grandchild, or school. If you have a psychological or medical background, refer to that expertise in explaining your perspective. If you have a law degree, use your legal training to explain the issues with these regulations. Express your concerns, not only for parental rights and potential harm to children, but also implications this will have for freedom of religion and speech, especially for teachers.  Please, flood the Federal Register with unique comments before September 12. Visit the Child & Parental Rights Campaign website for resources, links, and prompts.   The future of our children may depend on it.

Americans should not fear their congressional representatives

One congressional representative said that he actually contemplated and thought about shooting Americans this week. While Adam Kinzinger may be a Republican in title, he is anything but a Republican in action. He made the comments during an interview with Rolling Stone.  Kinzinger was talking about the events of January 6 when he made the statement that he spent 6 hours in his office “hunkered down.” He said that he was contemplating shooting Americans during that time, and that's a problem.  Americans should not live in fear of their congressional representatives. There is absolutely no reason that an American should have to worry about being shot or killed by their own government. But it's sad because we actually have to think that way now.  Our government is responsible for the deaths of people in Benghazi, Afghanistan, and even Ashley Babbit in the Capitol on January 6. To be honest, the Democrats and fake Republicans like Kinzinger are responsible. They have created a situation where Americans have to be concerned their government is out to kill them.  If you are not willing to accept their absolute rule, accept what the Democrats are willing to give you, and tolerate their tyranny, then they just want to eliminate you from society. They have no issue putting up a fence to keep you out, or shooting you.  The American government is by the people and for the people. It seems that this group in Congress needs that reminder from the American people.  Music courtesy of Greg Shields Music. http://www.reverbnation.com/GregShields

Quantum Quote: “The Nelson family rules: (1) Don't be an asshole; (2) Don't be an asshole; and (3) Don't be a damn asshole.” – Willie Nelson   What action are you taking to keep this world a place where we can continue to live?   No matter how small or how big your position, you can produce ripple effects that benefit our kids' and our grandkids' future!   Join artists Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Dead & Company, Maroon 5, Shawn Mendes & many others in using your platform to encourage people to take a step towards a livable Earth.   In this year's Met Gala, singer-songwriter Billie Eilish made a deal with one of the oldest fashion houses that if she wore their dress to the Met Gala, they would never use fur in their designs again. And guess what? They agreed!   Get up now and take a step towards positive change. Grab your phone and let your Congressional Representatives know that you want the Build Back Better Act approved.   It's good that we're recycling. It's good that we're each doing something. However, what we're facing is not going to be solved by you and I recycling alone. About 100 companies in the world are responsible for more than half of the carbon in the atmosphere. Our financial industry continues to invest Billions and Trillions of dollars in the industries that are destroying our planet.   Without changing those systems, there's no way that we're going to get where we need to be.   If we think we can make Mars a livable planet - we can make Earth a livable planet again! It's our kids' and our grandkids' future. We're at a critical tipping point in Earth history - take action and turn the tide!.https://coderedcongress.com/    Before coming to REVERB, Tanner Watt worked in both the alternative fuels and music industries. Tanner's adventures started by working for Willie Nelson and Family and then growing into a leadership role at The Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance, a non-profit organization founded by Willie, Daryl Hannah and Kelly King. With this unique experience, along with degrees in Photography and Public Relations, Tanner brings a unique skill set to the REVERB team.    Tanner loves making friends and finding positive solutions. These passions have made him a valuable member of the REVERB team for nearly 10 years. In his role as Director of Partnership, Tanner creates long lasting relationships with artists, events and more as well as finding creative ways to raise funds and engage the music community around important causes.    In Tanner's time with the organization he has developed a host of successful programs including #ROCKNREFILL a partnership with Nalgene USA centered around reusables and reducing single-use waste at events and REVERB's Farm To Stage and Farm To Family campaigns. These programs (to date) have eliminated over 4M single-use plastic bottles, raised over $3M for non-profit causes, and supported more than 4000 family farms. Demand Climate Action:  #CodeRedClimate  https://coderedcongress.com/    SuperNova #1. If you can afford to build a rocket ship for fun, you can afford to pay a little more to make this country what it needs to be for our kids and our grandkids.   SuperNova #2. There's so much we can do back stage to reduce impact and touch and feel the good work that we're doing, but there's even more – exponentially more - value in what we do when it comes to educating and inspiring music fans to take action in their own lives or to get involved in their community and be a part of taking real action on the climate crisis.   SuperNova #3. The most immediate issue that's on the table right now is passing the Build Back Better Act. It is the largest piece of climate legislation that's ever been proposed in the history of our country. That single bill will put us on track to meeting and even exceeding our goals, which is hugely important. It's actually necessary if we want life on this planet to continue the way we're used to or somewhat used to. That's the biggest issue that people can take action on. Registering to vote and getting out and being part of the conversation and understanding the leaders that we're electing and where they stand on these issues – that's crucially important, too.    Aha Moment: “When I was in college, I was an angry kid, like a rage against machines. I had a lot of this anger at authority energy and didn't know what to do with it. The Universe brought me to Hawaii. My wife and I got to find a job and I started doing computer work at a local Apple reseller. Through that, I randomly met a bunch of people and ended up starting to work with Willie Nelson's family. That was the biggest moment for me. That was a huge eye-opener for me. Just to see the power of people in celebrity positions who use that position for something positive, that was a huge inspiration for me, and beyond that, to be able to see such a diverse group of people supporting what we believe in. That's what made me do what I'm doing today.” – Tanner Watt   Best Advice He's Ever Received: “Just smile and nod. When somebody's saying that you know is wrong, in many cases, it's just better to smile and nod than to engage.” – Tanner Watt   Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “I try to be a good listener and I also to never be afraid to talk. When I've got something to say, I tend to say it. For good or for bad, I don't have the best filter. For me, to stay true to me and say it like it is. Most of the time, people appreciate it.” – Tanner Watt   Internet Resource: https://coderedcongress.com/   Book Recommendation: Crying in H Mart: A Memoir by Michelle Zauner   Magic Wand: “If I could change one thing for every person in the world, I think it would be to open their hearts and their ears. Just to give people a little bit more empathy or a little bit more understanding when it comes to trying to see things through other people's eyes. That would go a really long way.” – Tanner Watt   WTF or F: “I grew up in California. I lived in the bay area during the big quake. That was a crazy experience as a child, something that's eye-opening to see that as a kid. I thought that was like a once in my lifetime sort of event, then growing up to see it happen so many more times in so many other places with hurricanes, tzunamis, wildfires & other extreme weather events - those were even more eye-opening experiences.” – Tanner Watt   Most Energized About Today: “It's the next generation – the younger generation. I've never seen more intelligent, more active, more excited young people than I have in the last few years. I feel like things will get better because the people who are demanding it are becoming more powerful; and hopefully over time, that's really gonna create change.” – Tanner Watt   Next Steps: “We've got tours on the road, getting ready to host huge tours next year. Really looking forward to the music industry really opening up again.” – Tanner Watt   Parting Advice: “Keep an open mind. Listen a lot. Talk when you have to. Don't be afraid to speak your mind. Just get up and do something. Be a part of change. There's so much to be done. We can all find ways to get involved.” – Tanner Watt   Connect:         Email: tanner@reverb.org         Website: www.reverb.org         Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/reverb/         Twitter: https://twitter.com/reverb_org?lang=en         Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reverb_org/?hl=en Sign up for a free webclass to discover how easy it is to get ultra-efficient geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home – without the pain of emptying your savings account.   In “The Power Of Earth With Comfort” From Climate Master webclass, you'll discover the answers every homeowner needs to know, including:   How geothermal heating and cooling can draw energy from the ground beneath our feet (for pennies) Why homeowners everywhere are making the switch The secrets to securing utility incentives and tax credits to pay for a large portion of your new geothermal system and much more…   If you are tired of rising energy costs and want to save up to 70% on your energy bills, Go to www.AWESomeEarthKind.com and register now for this FREE special event that will show you exactly how to get geothermal heating and cooling installed in your home.   We'd like to hear from you! Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Tuesday April 20th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you.   Today - How Colorado's politicians have taken to Twitter to amplify their messages.   But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to April 20th, 1914 when coal miners on strike clashed with guards at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The result was the Ludlow Massacre, the deadliest incident in a months old labor dispute. More than 30 people died including 2 women and 11 children. Ultimately President Woodrow Wilson sent the US Army to restore order.   Now, our feature story.   Political chatter is increasingly happening on social media platforms, and especially on Twitter. Reporter Sandra Fish talks with Lucy Haggard about how some of Colorado’s congressional representatives use the digital bullhorn to amplify their messages.   To read the full story, go to coloradosun.com.    And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   Governor Jared Polis signed two gun control bills into law Monday, the first since the state implemented a red flag law in 2019. House Bill 1106 tightens gun storage rules, including by requiring gun safes or trigger locks for households where a minor or ineligible person could access firearms. Senate Bill 78 requires gun owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within five days of realizing a firearm is missing. Both of the laws passed the state legislature without any Republican support. https://coloradosun.com/2021/04/19/new-gun-control-laws-colorado/    Thousands of Coloradans who can’t leave their home, don’t have a car or are houseless are finding they’re left behind in the vaccine rollout. About 43% of Coloradans who had received their first coronavirus vaccine doses by the end of March got those shots outside of their home county. And at least 60,000 people traveled 50 or more miles away from their home zip code. Experts say access issues are being misunderstood as vaccine hesitancy. They say Colorado needs more programs that either deliver vaccines to people’s homes or transport people to clinics.   The matriarch of Colorado volunteer stewardship, Ann Baker Easley, will retire at the end of April after forty years of service. Baker Easley most recently led Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado as chief executive director for 13 years, and directed the Colorado Youth Corps Association for 11 years before that. Conservationists and land managers laud her as the defining force that built Colorado’s thriving outdoor volunteer culture, a necessity now as more people than ever are venturing outside.   For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. And don’t forget to tune in again tomorrow.   The Colorado Sun is non-partisan and completely independent. We're always dedicated to telling the in-depth stories we need today more than ever. When we say that Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett from The US Virgin Islands has a surprising sleep routine, we don't mean that she does anything strange or unusual. It's simply that like so many of us, sleep is something that shows up for Rep. Plaskett when she's run out of things to do. And like our friend Chilina Kennedy from a couple of episodes ago, she's stumbled upon a sleep solution that, according to Dr. Michael Grandner from the University of Arizona, has at least a loose basis in science. Of course, if the name doesn't immediately register, quickly Googling Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett should immediately reveal why we were excited to get her on the show: She had a colossally big day. One that made history. And though it would be easy to dismiss as a "third rail" subject that we shouldn't address on a sleep podcast, she's exactly the kind of person we should be talking to, because the question arises, "How did you possibly manage to fall asleep the night before?" We talk not only about the Congresswoman's ongoing sleep issues, but also things like the study from Dr. Dayna Johnson at Emory University, linking race with sleep in a way that is stark and disturbing. We also get into school start times in The US Virgin Islands, and how our Congressional Representatives go about affecting change when the science is undeniable. However, the Congresswoman has a "mic drop" moment at the end of her interview with Neil, where she makes a veiled reference to sex being good for sleep. We pursue that as a subject of conversation, almost to the point of being uncomfortable, with Dr. Grandner. And you'll be surprised what that conversation reveals about the data concerning sex and sleep. Linkapalooza Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett and her official Congressional web page.

In this episode Krystle and Aleta discuss Stephanie McAfee's Diary of a Mad Fat Girl. A note on this episode- At the time Aleta and I recorded our review, we were under the impression that the organization that Mrs. Peacock refers to, “Cointel Pro,” was a made up device from the author. After stumbling upon a thread in social media, our naiveté on the subject came to light. Cointel Pro was in fact a real organization created in the 1950s by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, to surveillance African American Civil Rights Activists, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, over 80% of the members in the Black Panther Party, and activists who are now Congressional Representatives that are in office today. In the Church Committee Hearing in the 1970s, the actions of the organization were deemed unconstitutional and the committee (and public, which had not known of the organization before) condemned them. We felt we would be remiss if we did not shed light on this fact, as we were in the dark too and feel that our listeners deserve to know the truth- We speculate that the author may have used the organization as a plot device to explain why this minor character had access to security cameras all along the city, but we are not blind nor deaf to the current events happening across the US today.
