Soul Asylum again? And their new album from 2024? When Jason and Rob Collier saw that the title of Soul Asylum's new album quoted the movie Airplane! they knew they had to follow up on their previous episodes about Grave Dancer's Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine.  Do you have to have heard the album to enjoy this talk? Definitely not. And don't call me Shirley. Rob and Jason play the Dave Pirner lyrics game, consider other quotes from Airplane! and what kind of album titles they might've made, talk about Soul Asylum's evolution, and get into details from the album.  Rob also talks a bit about his current and future projects, including more educational and Beatles-related material on his YouTube channel. That's How I Remember It

Dave Pirner is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. I grew up a massive Soul Asylum fan so I was thrilled to have Dave here to talk about his excellent new record, playing trumpet in the Minnesota Youth Symphony, different roles producers play, honoring his deceased band member Karl Mueller, our mutual guitar teacher Chris Osgood, and whether he is the guy yelling at the police at the beginning of The Replacements' Stink record. Was a great talk. Listen and subscribe.

In this insightful conversation, Dave reveals the inspiration behind the song's biting critique of corporate America and the record industry. He shares how the band experimented with recording equipment during this period, enjoying creative freedom without interference from their record label, and how they worked with producer Butch Vig on the album Let Your Dim Light Shine. The discussion also touches on the success of the album, which solidified Soul Asylum's place in 90s rock, and the enduring popularity of "Misery" as a fan favorite that continues to resonate in live performances.

Remember Erb Lumber? What about high school parties with alcohol and people who were overly dramatic? Steve has some guest spots on other pods you should be aware of. Luke has a direct response to our friend and previous guest host Travis who indirectly commented at the end of a recent Cinema 9 episode with Mike and Steve that was recorded just prior to recording this episode. Luke assumes his annoyance with the so-called right wing is implied. Yet, Luke isn't universally locking in the same label on every Trump lover or all Republicans. The Detroit Pistons were screwed by the San Antonio Spurs once again. This time losing the NBA Draft Lottery and falling all the way to the 5th pick. Bogus. Cue the NBA On NBC music! Steve recalls Conan O'Brien's Secrets bit from his show back in the 90s. We read your emails like we always do every week because it's the highlight of the show! Our lone email this week spurs a lot of different discussion points that go off on their own tangents. New emailer Joe brings the funk this week and wants to know if we make the effort to separate the art from the artist? Like R. Kelly or Woody Allen. We learn that Joe's wife loves getting jiggy with it. Luke reminds us that we don't have a clue what these so called celebrities do in private. Just because we hear a story about a famous person doesn't mean it's an unassailable fact. Right? Steve is reminded of the 90s vowel free lead singer after he brings Jesus Ranch by Tenacious Our show name isn't just a clever title. We try to follow the code of open and honest conversation without unsubstantiated judgment. Pat Mcafee has signed with ESPN and Steve just keeps referring to him as the former Colts punter repeatedly. Steve thinks Dave Chappelle is an edge-lord now and not the master comic he once was. We love you all! Really! We are very pleased with our little world that we all together have formed thanks to this show. This show has no substance to it without you listening and emailing. John then speaks to Pacers GM Chad Buchanan! John and Chad discuss where the Pacers are right now, and what they feel good about despite missing the playoffs this year. They talk about the defensive struggles the Pacers experienced this season, and how a lack of experience led to it. They also discuss the play of rookies Andrew Nembhard and Bennedict Mathurin, and how both of them had to adapt and grow as the season went on.   36:23 – 43:36 – John keeps things rolling by talking about the Colts and the possibility that they might draft Will Levis over C.J Stroud even if Stroud is still available at 4. He also talks some Pacers and what they will do during the offseason.   43:37 – 46:34 – John closes the 1st hour of the show!  46:35 – 1:09:56 – Zak Keefer from The Athletic joins the show as John continues to dissect Peyton Manning's comments on Will Levis, and if those comments could actually sway Jim Irsay. Zak gives his thoughts on if Chris Ballard would potentially be swayed by those comments as well. Zak and John talk about the rumors surrounding C.J Stroud potentially dropping, as well as the chance that the Texans or the Colts bypass QB entirely. John and Zak also get into who the Colts might target on Day 2 of the draft.  1:09:57 – 1:31:16 – Dave Pirner, lead singer of Soul Asylum, which will be joining Bryan Adams for the Carb Day concert, joins the show! John and Dave dive into Soul Asylum's career, including their 1992 hit Somebody To Shove! They also discuss Dave's fandom of the Minnesota Wild, as well as some of their favorite sports movies. Dave also talks about how to stay modern and creative even if the musical landscape is changing.   1:31:17 – 2:02:24 – Kevin Bowen from the morning show Kevin & Query joins John to pick up the Colts conversation. They talk about how the Colts might finally have some hope when the first night of the draft ends next Thursday. John and Kevin also talk about who has the most say when it comes to picking the Colts next quarterback.   2:02:25 – 2:09:05 – John looks at the NBA playoffs, and the whole Draymond Green – Domantas Sabonis situation.   In the most triumphant return of the Anhedonic Headphones podcast, the show's charming host, Kevin Krein, 'returns the favor' of sorts, and in the tenth episode overall, and first of season two, he interviews his delightful wife, Wendy Placko. The two discuss such timeless questions like 'Does Sebastian The Crab's mixtape have too many features on it?' and 'Is Jakob Dylan the more influential of the Dylan family?' They also, at length, discuss music from throughout Wendy's life, and the impact each song had on her, since that's, like, the point of this show.  For more information about the AWARD WINNING music blog Anhedonic Headphones, click here! Episode 10 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) Since 1981, the alternative rock band Soul Asylum has gone from a scrappy pack of dudes recording for Minneapolis label Twin/Tone to becoming a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum act. Along the way, the band's recorded music for all kinds of films. Most notably, Soul Asylum or its frontman, Dave Pirner, have had songs in three of director Kevin Smith's films, as well as So I Married An Axe Murderer, Twister, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty. Pirner also recorded as part of the Beatles cover act the Backbeat Band for the 1994 film, Backbeat. I was lucky enough to speak with Dave Pirner back at the start of September about all of these, as well as Soul Asylum's latest album, Change of Fortune. It's kind of all over the place, but Priner seemed up to discuss pretty much anything, so while it's kind of long, it's really fun. Check it out.
