As May Day comes around again, once again immigrant workers take to the streets in protest of continued criminalization. Having defeated the 287g program, which makes local law enforcement into an arm of immigration enforcement, in Milwaukee, Voces De La Frontera and other organizations have called for a "Day Without Latinxs & Immigrants" strike action to halt the program in Waukesha. Gabriel Quintero is a member of Voces and spoke to me about the day, the departure of Paul Ryan, and their organizing under the Trump administration. In the past, our Sheriff in Waukesha County, he wants to participate in the program called 287g, which would allow the sheriff’s department to act an immigration enforcement agent. This program has been known for not… What can I say? The purpose is not what the people wanted. We all hear about Sheriff Arpaio in Maricopa County, which is Arizona, he was using that program to intimidate and put all our community, immigrant community, and pretty much base it on your race. It was people afraid of this programs because you can be racially profiled. People being pulled over just for the color of their skin and to be questioned about status. So, this is not a good program for our community and, in general, the public. We fought this battle before with Sheriff Clarke in Milwaukee and we won the battle. He was trying to use the program in the Milwaukee area and thanks to Voces De La Frontera and the actions of all the people together, we defeated this program in Milwaukee. Now, we’re trying to do the same thing in Waukesha. From the middle of musical rehearsals - Welcome Alfredo to The @HendelMedia #ImmigrationReform Project! A video of Alfredo on Twitter caught my attention - he was speaking passionately at a rally, in a way that was very motivating - so I had to reach out and bring him on! Alfredo is from Mexico: He talks to me about the opportunities his family was seeking in the US to build a home in Mexico, the language barriers his parents faced, and the challenges of living in apartment complexes with other recent migrants families. He is a southerner for sure - his drawl and love for southern food are part of who he is! Alfredo credits the public education system for having the opportunity to succeed, and feels a deep commitment to always give back to the community, which is why at the Day Without Immigrants rally, he spoke directly to the youth in a way he felt they needed to hear. He loved that the video of him speaking received such great reception and ovation from people online that he didn’t know - fulfilling his goal of reaching out to people beyond the choir. Alfredo uses his story to introduce the reasons why people should learn more about the nation’s evolving immigration policies - and to the people in his undocumented community he has a single message - keep fighting, something he’s taken from his mom and is using every day.

Immigrant's rights activists have ramped up their organizing and protests this year in response to ongoing ICE raids that are now targeting undocumented organizers. Leading up to mass marches and strikes on May Day, known as Day Without Immigrants, actions are being held across the country to raise awareness about the contributions that immigrants make to the United States economy and the challenges they experience living in the US. Organizers are working towards a week-long general strike. We discuss the May Day actions with Sergio Hurtado, a volunteer organizer with Movimiento Cosecha. And we also provide an update on the campaigns for National Improved Medicare for All and to stop a US attack on North Korea. For more information, visit www.ClearingtheFOGRadio.org.

London. 2016. The day after the Brexit vote. The city was in shock. I was visiting and that day I saw multiple friends, coincidentally all of them born in other countries but residents of the UK for well over a decade. One of my friends proposed a response to all the immigration hysteria gripping the UK. She suggested organizing everyone who had emigrated/immigrated to the UK to pick a day to not go to work. The country would inevitably grind to a halt – and everyone would see what a vital contribution immigrants make. I thought this was a brilliant idea.
