Max Hall is a former quarterback for Brigham Young University and played in the National Football League for the Arizona Cardinals and in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Over the course of his football career, Max sustained multiple concussions as well as other injuries that led to an opioid addiction. Today he is the varsity offensive coordinator at American Leadership Academy High School in Queen Creek, Arizona, and co-owner of Victory Recovery, an addiction recovery program. Highlights 2:15 Max Hall played as a quarterback at BYU. Later he played professionally for the Arizona Cardinals. 6:20 Max felt his faith was strong and his testimony grew at BYU. But he began to be consumed by his identity as a football player. He began to lose focus on his callings as a husband, father, and in the Church. Football became his focus and his identity. In his first few games, he was knocked out twice with concussions. A few games later he dislocated his shoulder. Dislocating his shoulder changed him. He felt that his NFL career was over, and consequently that he was losing his identity. At the same time, he was given a 30-day supply of percocet to manage the pain of the shoulder injury. The Percocet made him feel better. He took the 30-day supply in three days. The drug hooked him, and he became physically addicted. 9:30 Max started losing focus on everything other than the drugs. The drugs became more important than recovery and than being a good father. 10:15 Max had previously tried Percocet in high school. He gave in to peer pressure and tried some with friends. It was an amazing feeling. In high school, he didn't get addicted to it. He'd try it on weekends for fun. After his shoulder injury, when he finished his 30-day supply in three days, he called up his high school friend, who supplied him with oxycontin. 12:00 The following year, Max played again. But he dislocated his shoulder again. His addiction continued to grow. He turned to other drugs - heroin, cocaine, meth. Over the next five years, Max did have times of sobriety. He failed an NFL drug test, and a doctor put him on suboxone. Max started coaching at BYU, and it started out well. But come spring, he started using again. He played for two years in the CFL, where he didn't use hard drugs. When he came back to Arizona, he had a bad relapse. He was arrested for possessing cocaine. When it hit the press, he considered suicide. His mom called him, he entered rehab, and he started on his path to sobriety. 17:45 Addiction is hell. It takes your soul. It makes you a different person. He was a manipulator, a liar, and a cheater. He would do anything he had to do to keep his addiction going. It takes the soul of the addict and breaks the hearts of those around them. In rehab, he was wondering how he could ever fix everything that was wrong. He's been fortunate to have a strong support system. 18:40 Max does EDD's (every day drills) to keep himself right. He gets up with the alarm, goes to the gym, does meditation, and reads a book to set himself up for the day. He's been doing it for over 8 years. Without a program and discipline, it won't work. A lot of recovery is the things you do on a daily basis to make yourself a better person. 20:30 During his addiction, Max could not look up. He had lost his connection with the Spirit and with Christ. It got to the point where he was mad at God - "Why did this happen to me?" It took a lot of searching and prayer and relying on the Savior to regain that connection. Without Christ, Max wouldn't be where he is at. 22:00 Max considers getting arrested to be a blessing. His secret was out. He wanted to die. He wanted to disappear. But he had to make a decision to own it and to fight. Max's wife told him that if he was willing to fight, she would fight alongside him. 23:00 Max's wife learned of his addiction about a year into it. He lied about being sober and he convinced her to keep it...

“A good leader understands how to lead his people, but a great leader understands where they should be led.”   “Often, people end up in one-sided opportunities where their vision and desires are disregarded and undervalued. It takes leadership to pair and match the people to the right companies that value their vision, regardless of their background.”   Joe Mullings is the chairman and CEO of The Mullings Group - the world's leading search firm in the medical device industry responsible for more than 7,000 successful searches with more than 600 companies. Among his clients were multi-billion dollar companies such as J&J, Google, Medtronic, Abbott, Siemens, as well as emerging startups bringing cutting-edge technologies like surgical robotics, telerobotics, AI, and deep learning to the market.   Recently, Joe Mullings was appointed as the Chief Visionary Officer of MRI Networks, the third-largest executive recruiting firm with 400 offices worldwide. He's also the President and CEO of Dragonfly Stories, which is the production company behind the award-winning docu-series, TrueFuture, of which he is the host and producer.   He's also a founder of the media platform TMG 360, a med-tech news and opinion website, and he has an engineering degree from the University of Dayton, Ohio.   In our conversation, Joe Mullings talks about his new way of talent acquisition and how he leads talents  to an environment that helps them become who they want to be:   Reshaping the market's current methods of assessing talent Talent should be viewed as “individuals,” not “candidates” Defining leadership competencies and behaviors (over pedigree) is required now more than ever The intersection between fear and selfish orientation Quotes   “Be curious about everything, and commit to being a lifelong learner.” - Joe Mullings   “Every C-suite exec should have a reasonable amount of their bonus based on their hiring brand in the marketplace.” - Joe Mullings    “‘Candidate' refers to a thing, and when you start to refer to people as things, you start down a slippery slope.” - Joe Mullings   “If your primary game plan and strategy for finding people is putting out snappy job postings, the A-players are not answering those. ” - Joe Mullings   “Fear is normal, but always keep in mind that you're worrying about something that hasn't happened yet and you might disarm yourself of coming with your best self because you'll be pulling your punches.” - Joe Mullings Did you enjoy this episode? On the 7th of January 2017, on his 21st birthday, Nick Dempsey dived into his backyard swimming pool and changed his life forever. Dislocating his neck and compressing his spinal cord, Nick and his family had to face up to one of the worst outcomes – that Nick was facing life as a quadriplegic. Having to shelve his water polo aspirations, Nick has been focused on his rehab and has continually astounded his therapists with what he has been able to achieve. Originally being told that he would have to use a mouth controlled electric chair to get around, Nick put his determination as an athlete to the test and is now not only in a hand controlled chair, but is also taking lessons to be able to drive a modified car. Nick’s journey to recovery echoes his journey as an athlete and is an inspirational story of perseverance that anyone can sympathise with. _____________________________Nick's road to walk again is a long and expensive one. Guest: Dennis Nafte Age: 36 years Location: East Islip, NY Bio: My ultimate goal in life and my main why has always been to be the best family man I could be, which is why I am a first a husband and a father. I’m married 13 years and have 2 kids ages 5 and 2. I was also an accomplished division 1 student athlete at Stony Brook University. I have a masters degree in education and was also selected to the 2003 division 1 college lacrosse all star team. I was one of the top 5 faceoff men in the country. After feeling frustrated with our current education system and looking for a way to make a bigger impact, I became an entrepreneur and CEO. I started my first company shortly after college and am now the founder and CEO of 4 privately held companies. I believe in giving back and currently support organizations like New York City relief, Easter seals, Bww charities, stony brook lacrosse, Long Beach sports programs, and beauty cares. I truly believes that to who much is given much is expected. My main passion today is mentoring and coaching others to find and develop their purpose in life. What brings me the greatest joy is helping people to identify their talents and abilities and use them in a positive way to better others lives. The World Needs More: I believe the world needs more of self love because it’s hard to love others until You love yourself. I would love the opportunity to gain your insight on the subject and help people know they are great and we all have magic in us. Especially in a world with social media where people are always comparing themselves to others. I want to help them grow their self image and truly find themselves and help overcome the growing epidemic of depression. One statement that I heard recently that changed my life and meant so much to me was “I’d rather people hate me for who I am then love me for who I’m not”. Wow Factor:  I guess my wow would be my heart and passion for others and to give as much value as I can. I also have a decent sense of humor and seem to be able to make people laugh a lot, which brings me a lot of joy to see people happy. There have been many moments that have shaped my life. Dislocating my elbow my senior year of college only 4 games into the season and having my whole life’s purpose up until that point almost ended made me start to really think about my future. Overcoming the depression and fighting my way back into the season even when all the doctors told me I was done showed me the power of the human mind and soul. Probably the second was even more recently after accomplishing so many goals of having our dream house, dream cars, and financial goals realizing that it doesn’t really make you happy and fulfilled. That it can also leave you feeling very empty and also create more fear then having nothing which is having everything and losing it. Really realizing that happiness comes from the pursuit of fulfilling our potential on a daily basis and being able to help others do the same. This may seem a little corny but I was watching the movie cool runnings which I had seen dozens of times but this time I heard something that changed my life and it was when the coach said to the driver. “If your not enough without the gold you won’t be enough with it” it hit me so hard because the real win in life is not what we get from it but who we become through it. I believe so many people think they’ll be happy after they do this or they do that without realizing that happiness is a choice that comes from within. Favorite Color: Blue

This week Dana Bassett and Duncan MacKenzie catch up with Peter Wachtler at Chicago's Renaissance Society just after their 100th anniversary. We "borrowed" this from Art Space which "borrowed" it from the Liverpool Biennial... probably it is updated on the Renassance Society website. PETER WÄCHTLER Born: 1979 Hometown: Hanover, Germany Lives and Works: Brussels, Belgium and Berlin, Germany Education: Fine Art Studies, Bauhaus-University Weimar with Prof. Fritz Rahmann, 2004 Kent Institute of Art and Design, Canterbury / England   While it might seem foreign or unfamiliar, underwater life, bourgeois domesticity, or the world of Peter Wächtler’s animated cartoons are simply habitats, each one coming with a set of behaviors, life-forms, movements, objects, images, and relationships. What is a disaster in one is a miracle in another and nothing more than routine in another. Dislocating them or mixing them together short-circuits their logic. To a butler—like the character that so frequently appears in Wächtler’s work—acts of intimacy, hospitality, corruption, lust, kindness, desperation, generosity, jealousy, hypocrisy, or delinquency are all the same in the end—it’s all just administration. Or,in an animated cartoon, deadpan humor can be laced with depression and pathos, and used to tell stories of heart-broken rats or hobos. Peter Wächtler’s recent solo exhibitions include dépendance, Brussels, Kunstverein Hildesheim, Ludlow 38, New York, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Galerie Lars Friedrich, Berlin, Etablissement d’en Face, Brussels. His work has been included in group exhibitions atLyon Biennale, Wiels Centre d’Art Contemporain, Brussels, Witte de With, and Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam.  Courtesy of Liverpool Biennial  The Ren posted the audio of his reading here... Also this episode has a strange easter egg.

The Angelic Conflict - Part 44 - “Faced with what we see around us in the world, we are forced to conclude that either God has the power and does not care, or that God cares but does not have the power.” - H.G. Wells God both cares and has the power, but He is planning something which demands the coming chaos of man's world in order to demonstrate to all that help is to be found in Himself alone. They totally admit their own spiritual bankruptcy and have turned utterly to the Lord Jesus Christ as God's one and only answer to their problems. JOH 17:9 “I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom Thou hast given Me; for they are Thine;” They do not recognize that there is a war on, and God neither will nor can yield. 1TI 3:16 And by common confession great is the mystery of the unique spiritual life: 1TI 3:16 - He [God] who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Beheld by angels, Proclaimed among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory. 2CO 4:4 the gospel of the glory of Christ, Dislocating pastors dispensationally will mislead congregations thoroughly! To understand God's grace to the maximum, they have to study the objects of maximum grace, fallen, depraved, unworthy, spiritually dead members of the human race. That teaches them something about God which they could never see - the grace and mercy of God toward undeserving and unworthy creatures. 1CO 1:27 but God has chosen the foolish ones [moros] of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak ones of the world to shame the ones which are strong, 1CO 1:28 and unknown ones of the world and the despised, that He might nullify the things that are, His grace being manifested to us brings glory to Him in the angelic conflict; that is why there is such an attack upon the grace of God. In salvation through faith in Christ, regenerate mankind becomes positionally superior to angels through the baptism of the Spirit and positional sanctification. This makes us royal family of God and a new spiritual species, so all believers can live the unique spiritual life of freedom instead of an independent life of slavery. That's when Jesus Christ received His third royal warrant, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and the angelic conflict shifted gears into its intensified stage. Our Lord became the victor of the angelic conflict as an inferior creature to angels, a member of the human race. God could not say this to deity and never said this to an angel; He said this to the humanity of Christ, making the humanity of Christ superior to angels. EPH 2:6 that God the Father raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, We cannot take advantage of our position now on earth unless we live in the PPOG designed for us in eternity past by God the Father. PHI 3:8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, PHI 3:8 - for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, 2CO 6:1 “We also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain” ROM 5:6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
