He's credited with creating the first ever miles reward program and the computer reservation system. It's Friday and almost the weekend. This Sunday is July 4th and we have a lot to be grateful for. Rhode Island has beautiful beaches, summer weather, and much of the state is now vaccinated. That means it's time to visit family, see your favorite places, watch some fireworks… and to celebrate this great country's founding: 245 years ago.. Born in the Bronx, she grew up in Pelham Manor, NY and graduated from Hollins College in Virginia. She married William E. Dumke Sr. on June 30th, 1955. Pat raised her family in Scarsdale, NY and resided there from 1967 to 1998, where Pat worked as a real estate agent at Julia B. Fee. When Pat was not finding the perfect buyer for the perfect house, she loved attending concerts and art exhibits in New York City. Pat was known for her panache in fashion as well as decorating. She loved being a mother and put her heart and soul into it, dedicating herself to her family, creating a home-life built on love and commitment. In 1998, Pat and Bill retired to Stonington, where she was a docent at the Lyman Allen Museum in New London. Sadly, Bill died in April 2001. In 2006, Pat met and married Gordon A. Thomas, splitting time between their homes in Quanaduck Cove and West Lebanon, NH. Pat continued to enjoy music, art, lectures, and all that Stonington had to offer. Pat is survived by her five children, nine beloved grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. In keeping with Pat's generous spirit, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Pat's life. The murder of a west side black politician in the early 1960s is one that the city just didn't want to solve according to our guest today on the Chicago Justice Show, Mick Dumke from ProPublica Illinois. We discuss his latest piece titled "The Murder Chicago Didn't Want to Solve". According to Dumke Lewis was the first black alderman elected on the west side of Chicago. The 24th ward then and now encompasses large swaths of the North Lawndale community. As blacks starting to move to this west side community the Daley political machine knew they had to at least attempt to show the new residents that the machine had their interests in mind. To do this the machine recruited and promoted a black man to run for alderman. One they knew would not challenge the status quo of political corruption as well as mafia control of vice and gambling in the community. As anything in the 1960s in Chicago there was all kinds of mafia, political, and police intermingling in Lewis' life and murder. Of course the last person we know that saw Lewis alive was a Chicago Police officer. There is even an FBI report about the murder that states the machine was purposefully spreading rumors about Lewis in the local media so the public wouldn't care about the loss of this politician. Dumke's story is a fascinating deep dive in to the intersection of the political machine and the mafia told through the life and murder of a west side black politician that seemed to have a cozy yet complicated relationship with both. Dumke isn't able to identify the person responsible for the murder but instead he goes in to real detail about all the powers that be in the city and the community that had reason to see Lewis gone and his murder go unsolved. On this episode, I talk about 9/11 and how the Department of Homeland Security was created to protect the American people. Then, I discuss an oped written in The Washington Post, by former U.S Senator Barbra Boxer and how she regrets voting for the Department of Homeland Security, because of the authoritarian actions in Portland, Oregon. She says she never imagined that a President like Donald Trump could use DHS in such an egregious way. After my opening segment, I speak with Mick Dumke, a ProPublica Investigative Reporter, who wrote an excellent piece on the situation in Chicago and these federal agents have been sent in to combat gun violence. This week's episode comes straight from our time at the 2020 Horn Fair with the Honourable Company of Horners. Listen as Carl Dumke, Master Horner, gives a wonderful presentation on the European Powder Flask. This hour long presentation is packed with information and history on an often overlooked subject. Carl Dumke is a self-taught artist, woodworker, sign maker, and hornsmith with the Honorable Company of Horners (HCH) guild. Over the past fifteen years, he has studied artwork extensively across the United States and Europe. Traveling throughout Western Europe he gained an appreciation for Renaissance and Gothic art, which is mirrored extensively in his early work. Upon returning to the United States, he studied arts of the trades at Colonial Williamsburg and began concentrating on styles associated with early American history. He opened Grinning Fox Studios in 2006 and, fascinated with fledgling art in America, began to focus on 18th- and 19th-Century tavern and trade signs. In 2008, he became a member of the HCH and started studying hornsmithing and scrimshanding (scrimshaw), advancing to Master in 2014. Dumke's work has been featured in various publications and has won numerous awards throughout the United States and Europe. His wares have been featured in the Abby Aldrich Folk Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg and in historic homes in Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Valley Forge. On this first episode of The Environmental and Occupational Physiology Podcast, host Dr. Evan Johnson, a professor at the University of Wyoming, introduces himself. Evan sits down with Dr. Charles Dumke from the University of Montana, who breaks down some of his articles as well as shares his journey to how he got to where he is now.
In the concluding episode of a two-part series, Jaye continues her discussion on the decline of the United States within the framework of her hometown, Detroit, Michigan. She discusses the conditions in Detroit prior to the 1967 Detroit riots that led to the riots and the decline of the city, including workplace discrimination, housing segregation, the destruction of tight-knit black communities by urban renewal, racial strife between white and black Detroiters, and tensions between police and the community. As Detroit is making its comeback, what lessons can Americans learn from Detroit that will help the US survive its "fifth quarter?" Thank you for listening! Dr. Chuck Dumke and Dr. Brent Ruby from the University of Montana re-join the podcast to discuss this vital component of performance. Hydration plays an important role in firefighter safety, and yet at times its significance has been over-emphasized. “Hydration is not a rescue from heat related injuries. It’s an important component to avoid hypo-hydration, but hydration isn’t going to rescue you from other bad decisions,” says Dumke. Optimal intake amounts are debated, Camelbaks vs. canteens are discussed, and the role of sports drinks in comparison to water consumption are also explored. This podcast was made possible in part through support from the U. S. Forest Service and the University of Montana. The University of Montana is an equal opportunity provider.
Ken Davis is joined by the Metropolitan Planning Council’s Alden Loury and Sun-Times reporter Mick Dumke. They discuss a recent Dumke story about the spike in Chicago Police arrests of parolees for “unlawful contact” with people the police identify as gang members. They also discuss an MPC report that quantifies the cost of segregation in Chicago, expressed in lost wages, missed education opportunities and disparate law enforcement procedures. In addition, they analyze MPC data pointing to severe job losses that occur a few years after significant white population loss in individual suburbs, and consider a suggestion that some tax-strangled south suburbs might want to consider allowing the City of Chicago to annex them. This program was produced by Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV).
