Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell join Naga Munchetty to talk about Joan, Paddy and Chris: Road Tripping and Into The Jungle with Ed Stafford
Follow world-renowned explorer Ed Stafford on the expedition that made his name: walking the entire length of the Amazon River, on foot. People thought that it was impossible, that he would die trying; and they were nearly right. He was attacked by a tribe of angry machete wielding indigenous peoples, he faced Narco drug traffickers and giant anacondas. But gradually, step by step, over the course of two and half years, through some of the toughest and deadliest terrain on the planet, he proved them all wrong. Ed crossed the entire continent from the Peruvian Andes, and the furthest known source of the Amazon, to Brazil, where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean, more than 4,000-miles away. He is the first person in history to do it, and holds a Guinness World Record for the achievement. This is one of the boldest expeditions ever attempted, and one of the greatest adventure tales ever told. Are you ready to head into the jungle? Let's go. Highlights include: · Hear how Ed survived being surrounded by an angry tribe of indigenous peoples intent on hacking him to pieces · Find out how he crossed the infamous Red Zone, a lawless area of the jungle controlled by drug-traffickers · Climb with him to the 18,000-foot summit of Nevado Mismi, in the Peruvian Andes, the furthest known source of the Amazon · Meet the Ashaninka, the largest indigenous tribe in the Amazon Basin, and hear how Ed ended up befriending two tribal chiefs and walking with them for more than 6 weeks. · Discover what it takes to complete such a long and grueling expedition – 860 days walking through some of the toughest jungle terrain on the planet · Hear his personal story of transformation. How he began the journey as a ‘volatile young man' wanting to prove how tough he was, but how the jungle humbled him, and made him connect with a deeper, and more authentic of himself. · See this amazing forest through new eyes. The Amazon is nearly 20 times the size of Great Britain, home to some 400 billion trees, and 10% of the world's species. For Ed, it began as a dangerous place, something to be conquered, but it ended up becoming home, a place to be marveled at, and protected · Hear what adventure means to Ed, how it is the ‘crucible in which you find yourself', and how you too can use adventure and exploration to connect more deeply with who you really are Also, find out about Ed's new series – Ed Stafford: First Man Out. The lessons from dealing with international flights and going to an NHL game in an era of Covid. Plus just how much of the misinformation being peddled about Covid is being believed - you might be surprised. And, the old hometown, Churchill Manitoba gets special treatment from the NY Times.
My guest today is Laura Bingham. Laura is an adventurer and explorer, perhaps best known for her world's first descent of the Essequibo River - locating the source of the river for the first time on record. Laura left home aged 18 and travelled through Europe, Africa, Asia and North America before landing in Mexico where she taught English and took part in conservation work to protect the endangered Jaguar. When she was ready to head back to the UK, without the necessary funds for a flight, she joined a crew to sail back to England in a 38ft Trimaran! Laura rose to prominence in 2016 when she cycled across South America with no money to raise funds and awareness for a Children's charity in Paraguay called OPERATION South America. This is a fantastic chat where Laura shares more on her incredible story, being married to TV adventurer Ed Stafford and balancing parenthood with the life of an explorer!
Retired U.S. Diplomat Alberto Miguel Fernandez, speaking to Anatolian Dispatch, discussed Turkey's role in Syria and its relations with Arab neighbors. Amb. Fernandez told Anatolian Dispatch's Ed Stafford that many Arab states see Turkey as a threat not a friend.
Ed Stafford is a British explorer. He holds the Guinness World Record for being the first person to walk the length of the Amazon River. He has been one of the National Geographic Adventurers of the Year and was also the European Adventurer of the Year. He has written multiple books on his quests and now hosts an adventure reality show on the Discovery Channel called Ed Stafford: First Man Out. Some interesting insights from this episode: His insecurity as an adopted child drove his ambition. He had to adapt his behavior in order to make people like him and prove his worth. He set the Guinness record for being the first person to hike the length of the Amazon. It took him 2 years, 4 months, and 8 days to complete the 4,345 mile trek. “Imagine the thickest of bramble bushes, knotted with razor-sharp vines and spiky palms. Then imagine sinking the whole thing in a swimming pool full of muddy water and having to make your way through that swimming pool using just your 18 inch machete.” “I would start the day positive and upbeat and as each negative experience cropped up, I would set myself the challenge of laughing at it and not allowing it to bring me down. Each time I succeeded, I would give myself a pat on the back and it boosted my morale further to think I was gaining control over the way I reacted to external influences.” “I find myself in the pleasant position of being calmer and happier with the world about me. My confidence now comes from within rather than from the opinions of others. I now know who I am and what I am capable of.” “Excellence is always trying to become the best version of yourself.” Links TV Show: Ed Stafford: First Man Out Books: Walking the Amazon Naked and Marooned Ed Stafford's Ultimate Adventure Guide Personal Site: Ed Stafford

You can imagine Ed might have been talking about himself at one time when he says, "I find tough guys quite comical". From a conventional rugby playing, beer drinking, macho-man-adventurer kind of background, Ed Stafford has come a long way. Through his treks up the Amazon and most crucially his solitary time whilst making the TV show "Naked & Marooned", he got to spend a lot of time disassembling and reconstructing his identity. A year or so after filming, Ed suffered a complete mental breakdown, something he discusses quite candidly in his writing. We chatted through the struggles of isolation with Ed, and his tools to bring mental fortitude even in the toughest of times. He makes it seem so simple. So, um, perhaps it is...? Thanks to Nuzest Nutrition (Ed is an Ambassador for the lovely nutrition brand, as are we) for hooking us up for this delicious chat. Grab a cuppa and cosy up for this one, and thank Ed who's gone there so you don't have to....even though you probably should!

On today’s episode, I’m joined by the explorer and survivalist Ed Stafford. In 2010, Ed became the first person to walk the entire length of the Amazon River, a feat that took 860 days and put him on the map as one of our most prominent and exciting adventurers. From there here’s gone on to present and self film more massive challenges, like living in complete isolation on a desert island for 60 days without food, clothes or equipment, or being left for dead in various extreme environments around the world from Madagascar to Mongolia. These became incredible TV series that I’ve watched religiously and couldn’t recommend more. Ed is someone I’ve wanted to interview for the very beginning but like so many of my dream guests he’s normally always travelling so I was lucky to finally get this time to speak with him and I hope you enjoy what I think is a really raw and honest account of the spiritual and emotional development that comes with travel - as well as hearing about some inspiring destinations along the way.Destination Recap:Henfaes, Aberdaron, WalesLeicestershire, EnglandAldeburgh, Suffolk, EnglandWalking the length of the Amazon riverOlorua, FijiArgentine PatagoniaNorthern ThailandIbiza, SpainAntarctica Ed’s new podcast, Dangerous Minds, is out nowThank you so much for listening. Steve Backshall is one of our leading natural history broadcasters; he's also an extreme sportsman who has conquered some of the world's most dangerous mountains. Despite suffering a severe rock-climbing injury in 2008, he continues to set himself extraordinary challenges. For One to One Steve meets two other extreme adventurers to discover what drives them to significant levels of danger and physical discomfort in order to complete challenges that are almost superhuman. In this first programme he meets Ed Stafford. Ed was the first person to walk the entire length of the Amazon River - 6000 miles over two and a half years. Ed acknowledges that explorers have a 'chink in their armour, an insecurity, a fear of something in life... Doing something tangible, something remarkable, enables you to prove yourself'.
