If you have a success story you would like to share with the Business Boutique community, email me at podcast@businessboutique.com. New podcast episodes are available every other week. Give yourself permission to be a beginner. We have a bad habit of calling successful people an overnight success—as if they just woke up one day on top of the mountain. But, in most cases, that’s just not true. In reality, most successful people started small doing something unimpressive. Here are just a few examples I can think of: Television pioneer Oprah Winfrey started her career as a news anchor in Nashville, Tennessee—way before it was the cool and popular city it is today.1 Y’all, she was even demoted once from an anchor job she had in Baltimore.2 (I bet that person still regrets that to this day!) And then there’s self-made millionaire Dave Ramsey. He grew his business from a card table in his living room to a multimillion-dollar company with more than 850 team members—and he’s helped millions get out of debt and change their family tree. Did you know that world-famous author J.K. Rowling was living on welfare when she wrote the first Harry Potter book?3 And finally, let’s talk about Ellen Latham—a name many may not recognize. But I bet they recognize the name of the business she started: Orangetheory Fitness. The massively successful chain of fitness studios actually started in a spare room of Ellen’s house.4 Do you see what I’m talking about? The early stages of their careers did not look impressive by any means. But, eventually, because they were consistent and refused to let their humble beginnings define them, their careers surpassed even their wildest dreams. Related: Don't Be Sorry for the Struggle The Importance of Starting Small Let’s just go ahead and acknowledge that starting small is not fun. You’re probably not going to update your friends about it any chance you get, or post pictures about your journey on Facebook. But you know what? Starting small is actually one of the most important steps in building your business—or anything for that matter—wisely. That’s why it’s so important to give yourself permission to be a beginner. Aside from the fact that it works and is proven, starting small makes your dreams and your goals so much more attainable. As you begin to think about your big dreams and goals, what usually happens? Fear creeps in, doesn’t it? You start to doubt that any of your dreams are even possible, because they’re just too big and overwhelming. But when you embrace the idea of starting small, your dream doesn’t feel so crazy after all. How to Start Small The commitment to start small requires persistence, dedication and a go-getter attitude—qualities I know you’ve got in you! That’s why I want to give you a few do’s and don’ts that you can use as a guideline as you chase your dreams. 1. Don’t wait until you’re ready. “Ready” is a myth. Because let’s be real—do we ever feel ready for anything in life? Related: How to Be More Confident There’ll always be a new doubt or excuse that will try to convince you it’s just not time yet. But the truth is, the only way you figure anything out for yourself is by doing it—by learning on the job. Early on in my career, I learned something important: Say yes before you know how. When an opportunity comes your way and you don’t feel ready, qualified or educated enough, it doesn’t matter. Just get out there and get moving—ready or not. 2. Do take baby steps. When you break down your big idea and big dream into baby steps, you begin to see the impossible become possible. For example, if you want to train for a marathon, you don’t start by running 15 miles. You start by training for a 5K. If you want to open a boutique, you start with an Etsy store. If you need more sleep, you start by winding down and turning off the screens 10 minutes earlier than you normally would. If you miss seeing your friends, you send one text to one friend and set up one lunch date. Baby steps. What you’ll find—in business and in life—is that small changes tend to make the biggest impact. It’s the small things you do repeatedly that make up life-change that actually lasts. That’s why I don’t want you to think of your dream in terms of giant leaps you need to take. Instead, think: What’s one baby step I can take this week? 3. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. In our overconnected culture, it’s so tempting to get on social media and compare your journey to someone else’s. But you shouldn’t compare your small steps to someone else’s giant leaps. I love the quote by Theodore Roosevelt that says, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I wholeheartedly believe you cannot be present for your dream and for your life if you’re looking and comparing it to everyone else around you. And you can’t make changes or improvements if you’re too busy obsessing over someone else’s progress. Take the focus off everybody else and instead focus on your life, your business, your dreams and your values. Stay in your lane and run your race. And as you take small steps, be confident in knowing that those are faithful steps God will honor. Related: Ep 70: How to Be Content in Every Situation 4. Do keep it simple. When I graduated from college with no money and no job, I remember trying to convince myself that I needed to purchase a bunch of new suits for job interviews. It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? But we do this in business too. We say we need a new laptop, a new studio or new equipment to get started. Let’s be honest—no, you don’t! Often, our desires and efforts to buy new things are not really because the business needs it. We’re just trying to justify and validate our dream. The truth is: Working on your business is what validates the business, not the stuff you buy. In the words of Arthur Ashe, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” 5. Don’t go into debt. There is this myth in the business world that somehow business debt is different from personal debt. As if the debt belongs to the business and not to you. But they’re the same thing. Because guess who has to pay that business debt at the end of the day? You do. Business debt is no different than personal debt. In both scenarios, you’re giving up power, ownership and control—three things you really should maintain. The worst part is, when you take on debt to do anything, every decision you make will become dependent upon the debt you owe. It’s all debt, and it’s all a bad idea. Save up for the things you want and be scrappy in the meantime. Related: Ep 24: Money Pitfalls to Avoid in Your Business 6. Do make a plan and set goals. You don’t just need the dream. You need a plan for how you’ll get from where you are today to where you want to be. And once you have that plan, it’s critical to set goals that will get you there. For example, if you want to become a teacher, your plan might be to get a teaching certificate within two years. That’s a great plan. Then, you might set goals like: take the PRAXIS exam before August, or enroll in courses that start this fall. Related: Ep 13: How to Write and Reach Your Goals When you make a plan for where you want to be, and then set goals for how you’re going to get there, you’re much more likely to make that dream a reality. Because I promise, you will not get to where you want to be by accident. Get Started Today! There is no such thing as an overnight success. You’ve got to put in the hours and the work required to accomplish your big dreams. And it’s totally possible when you start small, use what you have, and grow slow. Remember, the impressive things in life often start as unimpressive things. Someone who has done this really well is my friend Melissa Kaiserman. She’s the owner of A Time for Everything and Makery Space. Melissa is going to be my guest on the show next week, and she’ll share all of her secrets on starting small and working on Etsy. So, make sure you tune in to that bonus episode! #AskChristyWright On today’s #AskChristyWright segment, we talk about how to attract your ideal customer on social media and how to determine if it’s the right time to start paying for advertising.

Give yourself permission to be a beginner. We have a bad habit of calling successful people an overnight success-as if they just woke up one day on top of the mountain. But, in most cases, that's just not true. In reality, most successful people started small doing something unimpressive. Here are just a few examples I can think of: Television pioneer Oprah Winfrey started her career as a news anchor in Nashville, Tennessee-way before it was the cool and popular city it is today.1 Y'all, she was even demoted once from an anchor job she had in Baltimore.2 (I bet that person still regrets that to this day!) And then there's self-made millionaire Dave Ramsey. He grew his business from a card table in his living room to a multimillion-dollar company with more than 850 team members-and he's helped millions get out of debt and change their family tree. Did you know that world-famous author J.K. Rowling was living on welfare when she wrote the first Harry Potter book?3 And finally, let's talk about Ellen Latham-a name many may not recognize. But I bet they recognize the name of the business she started: Orangetheory Fitness. The massively successful chain of fitness studios actually started in a spare room of Ellen's house.4 Do you see what I'm talking about? The early stages of their careers did not look impressive by any means. But, eventually, because they were consistent and refused to let their humble beginnings define them, their careers surpassed even their wildest dreams. Related: Don't Be Sorry for the Struggle The Importance of Starting Small Let's just go ahead and acknowledge that starting small is not fun. You're probably not going to update your friends about it any chance you get, or post pictures about your journey on Facebook. But you know what? Starting small is actually one of the most important steps in building your business-or anything for that matter-wisely. That's why it's so important to give yourself permission to be a beginner. Aside from the fact that it works and is proven, starting small makes your dreams and your goals so much more attainable. As you begin to think about your big dreams and goals, what usually happens? Fear creeps in, doesn't it? You start to doubt that any of your dreams are even possible, because they're just too big and overwhelming. But when you embrace the idea of starting small, your dream doesn't feel so crazy after all. How to Start Small The commitment to start small requires persistence, dedication and a go-getter attitude-qualities I know you've got in you! That's why I want to give you a few do's and don'ts that you can use as a guideline as you chase your dreams. 1. Don't wait until you're ready. "Ready" is a myth. Because let's be real-do we ever feel ready for anything in life? Related: How to Be More Confident There'll always be a new doubt or excuse that will try to convince you it's just not time yet. But the truth is, the only way you figure anything out for yourself is by doing it-by learning on the job. Early on in my career, I learned something important: Say yes before you know how. When an opportunity comes your way and you don't feel ready, qualified or educated enough, it doesn't matter. Just get out there and get moving-ready or not. 2. Do take baby...

Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer - co-founders of Shred415 - are sort of a package deal. Together, they go by Bonnie and Tracy, populating a shared Instagram under the name with photos of the two of them, sharing an office where each sits under their first initial, taking vacations with their families together. In fact, it was during this interview that I realized that I had not ever pronounced their last names aloud. And at aSweatLife, we use a style that was beaten into me in Journalism School - spelling out a full name and listing a title on first mention (Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer - co-founders of Shred415) and then referring to that person by their last name from that point forward. And although I will follow that style, I must note how difficult it's going to be, which is a true win for the pair who have successfully branded themselves by their first names together and created a world for themselves built around fitness. "I think we're sisters at this point," Micheli said of the pair that met in line at Starbucks and bonded over their shared love of fitness. Roemer spent her early career at Bally Total Fitness, creating a new focus on lifestyle within the former fitness giant, but when life brought her to Chicago, she worked at PowerPlate in their studio and eventually was the General Manager of David Barton Gym. Micheli had just started teaching Barre at Dailey Method, although her deep passion for fitness fueled her through her early career as a traveling computer programmer. Together, they bonded over their shared love of fitness and their desire to create a treadmill and strength training format. And eight years ago when Micheli and Roemer opened their first Shred415 location, Roemer recalls where the fitness industry was: fitness fanatics were committed to their routines, but not to their gyms. Those who wanted to do their favorite fitness classes bought class-packs, not memberships. A departure from big-box gyms and their commitment-focused memberships. "Everything comes back full-circle," Roemer mused. "I feel like we're back in this full-circle cycle where we started with big box gyms and people were paying memberships ... there's a lot more competition in the playing field now and we've all come back to trying to capture our clients and have recurring revenue and memberships." And lot of other elements have changed through the near-decade of Shred415. The pair can now count themselves as franchisors. As the brand first grew, it was corporate-owned - a model in which one controlling entity invests in and opens all locations. That's a slower way to grow, especially as the Shred415 community called for expansion outside of Chicago. "We were receiving emails from people across the country wanting us to get to their city, their town, their state," Roemer remembers. But after winning EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2015, Micheli and Roemer made a life-changing connect with OrangeTheory founder Ellen Latham who talked them through franchising and how it can supercharge their nationwide growth. Today, you can find Shred415 across the nation, run by franchisees who fell in love with the brand and even some who started as instructors in Chicago and took the brand with them to other cities and states. At the heart of this expanding empire, though, are two friends who were lucky enough to meet in line at a coffee shop and somehow managed to find their perfect match in business. "The second we worked together it was such an incredible partnership from day one, we, just have each others' best interests in mind," Micheli said. Find Shred415 locations nationwide, and soon globally. Work out with Bonnie and Tracy on the SweatWorking App and if you already love Shred415 and want to open one yourself, you can find out more about franchising here.

Welcome to Rich is Not a Four-Letter Word, the podcast for your wallet. I’m Gerri Willis with the Fox Business Network. Ellen Latham is the co-founder  of Orangetheory Fitness, the highly successful gym franchise that is taking the country by storm. Latham, an Exercise Physiologist, is attempting to help members remake their bodies from the ground up to be healthier and better off. I spoke with her recently about building the business. Here are the takeaways: Focus on what you have, not what you don't have. Starting the business was equal parts desperation and inspiration for Ellen, who started pursuing her own business after she was let go from a high-end Miami Beach gym, where she was manager. When that happened her father told her to focus on what she could do and what she had, and she soon got back into the fitness mix offering her own Pilates class. Start simple. At first, Latham was looking to develop a workout that she could offer a small number of clients. In the early years, she didn't even dream of starting a company that would ultimately have 1200 franchised locations and a high profile around the country. Don't just show up. Go out to perform the best you possibly can in everything you do. Take a listen to the podcast! Follow me on Twitter @gerriwillisFBN and on Facebook, where my handle is GerriWillis. Life-changing. Addicting. Intense. These are just a few words that have been used to describe Orangetheory – the fitness studio known for its science-backed, technology-tracked, coach-inspired workouts. The franchise has taken the world by storm – in just eight years, it has amassed a million members, expanded to over 1,100 locations around the world, and has crossed a threshold that very few businesses manage to reach: exceeding $1 billion in revenue in a single year. But what is it that fueled Orangetheory’s rise to the top of an industry that is so full of competition? In this episode of the peak performance season, we are bringing you to Business Mastery – where you have a front-row seat at the Masters of Disruption panel. At this panel, Tony spoke with Ellen Latham, the creator and co-founder of Orangetheory Fitness. You’ll also hear a bit from Danny Meyer, founder of Union Square Hospitality Group and creator of Shake Shack, as he participates in the panel, and even asks Ellen a question toward the end. As you'll soon find out, Ellen’s energy is boundless, and certainly infectious. And it was this very energy, in combination with her creativity, determination and pure grit, that got her through the most difficult time of her life – a time when she was laid off her job, out of work and a single mother to her 9-year old son. She tells Tony about her bulletproof mindset during that time, and the sports psychology technique she used to turn what could have been a massive break-down – into the massive break-through that led her to create Orangetheory fitness. Orangetheory offers heart rate-based workouts, built around the physiological concept of excess-post-exercise oxygen consumption, or E.P.O.C., where the body continues to burn calories at a higher rate even after the workout is over. But behind the science of Orangetheory is something far less measurable, but just as powerful: its raving fan culture. Ellen reveals to Tony how she and her partners have strategically built an army of fiercely loyal clients – and what they’ve done to scale this culture across the globe.

72% of people fall off their New Year's resolutions in the first month of the year.   Don't let that be you.   In this episode, Bronni Karatassos, the head trainer at OrangeTheory Fitness Sandy Springs, shares how you can make your healthy New Year's resolution easier – and more fun! If you have a resolution to lose weight then you should check out OrangeTheory's next event. The coaches will support you, and the reward will help keep you going to the gym!   The OrangeTheory 6 Week Weight Loss Challenge runs from January 16th - February 27th, 2017. Each studio will be running their own challenge. One male and one female will win $500. I'm a big fan of OrangeTheory workouts. The programs are fun, personalized and change every week. Your 55-minute session incorporates music, instruction and the Splat point system to help you monitor your progress. Splat points are awarded for each minute you spend with your heart rate elevated. The goal isn't to have the most points – the goal is to create an afterburn. The theory behind OrangeTheory and the Splat point system is that, after 12-25 minutes of elevated heart rate during a workout, you will create an afterburn. An afterburn means that, for the next 24-36 hours, you will have a slow, low calorie burn. The points let you track your progress during a single session, and over time. “That's the game changer in OrangeTheory and that's why we're so successful – You give us an hour of your time, and we're going to give you a 24-36 hour calorie burn for the rest of the day and into the next day.” If you get bored easily, or if you're OCD like me, you'll really enjoy the OrangeTheory programs. You'll also never experience the same workout from week to week. This keeps your sessions diverse and more fun, and your muscles are getting challenged in a different way each time you come in. “There are no rules are OrangeTheory. If this is a first time workout, if you haven't worked out in six months, we want to ease you into the shallow end. We certainly aren't going to take you into the deep end and let you drown.” The changing programs and supportive coaches at OrangeTheory make it an easy and fun place for beginners to get fit in the New Year. Plus, your first workout is always free! OrangeTheory is most effective when you go to the gym four times a week. They're so confident it will work that they have a money back guarantee, for the first month, if you're not getting results and you're going at least three times a week.   Resources: Learn more about OrangeTheory Fitness: Website Push: A Guide to Living an All Out Life: The Story of Orangetheory Fitness by Ellen Latham   Production & Development for Rebel Health Coach by Podcast Masters
