Vinod and Geoff have returned from their summer adventures, and their meetup in London Heathrow for Experience 063. After all of the concern we had for meeting up at Heathrow, it ended up being very anticlimactic. Vinod shares some interesting insights into how providing certain destination information could affect a London cab driver's ability to take airport fares later in the day. Geoff and Vinod rave about the terrific new Elizabeth Line in London. Geoff's flight from Toronto was quite late leaving for Copenhagen. We will do a future experience on when should you really show up when your flight is tremendously delayed. He shares his experience of the flight. Geoff shares his experience of checking in at the Priority Pass International Lounge in Toronto. Indeed sometimes it is just nicer to find a quiet gate than going to a lounge. Geoff then flew onward to London from Copenhagen. Copenhagen Airport has a practice of passengers scanning their boarding passes to enter a waiting room and then board, instead of scanning when boarding. Vinod shared his experience of flying from Vancouver to Heathrow. What a coincidence -- one of the pilots on the flight was a friend of his. For the avgeeks, it was a non-ETOPS flight, and the landing was greased in...so smooth. Geoff continued on with Eurostar from London to Brussels and then onward to Cologne with a German ICE train. The Eurostar was fine, but the ICE train was so full Geoff sat in by the door in the vestibule for 2 hours! Geoff had some experiences with the German trains not being very German. First, a fire on train line. Second, technical issues before the train even starts the journey. Third, random stops in the middle of nowhere in Bavaria. Geoff reviews his flight from Vienna to Frankfurt with neighbouring passengers not having to return their beer bottles before landing. As Geoff was checking into his flight to Johannesburg, he learned that Lufthansa only issues baggage stickers at certain desks at Frankfurt -- not all check-in machines. We give a shout out to friend of the show Paul Papadimitriou -- Geoff and Vinod both met him in person in London, and great times were had by all. Paul you're welcome to visit Canada any time. We talk about the tight connections that are often faced in Frankfurt, knock on wood no problems for either Vinod or Geoff...yet. Geoff flew to Johannesburg in a 747-800 upstairs in business class. When Johannesburg is busy with international flights, it's busy. Geoff continued his adventure through South Africa to Kruger National Park and onward to Mozambique. He had a super early flight from Maputo to Nampula with an onward land journey to Ilha de Moçambique. Geoff's return to fly out of Nampula was an adventure in itself. Police checks, racing to the airport, honking horns, and arrival after check-in desks closed. Did he make it? Narrator: He did. Then Geoff continued onward from Maputo to Cape Town via some connection adventures in Johannesburg. Geoff returned from Cape Town to Frankfurt, and then homeward bound to Toronto. Toronto's baggage situation was uneventful. If you're liking this episode experience, you may also enjoy Experience 020. "Go or no-go? When Vinny and Geoff's rail travel plans went sideways." It's available wherever you listen to your podcasts. Vinod's return to Vancouver saw waves of people sent through to security at Heathrow, and people who aren't managing the queues properly. Security made Vinod put his stroller through the baggage scanner. When he arrived in Vancouver there were no issues with the baggage, but there were no baggage carts. There was no random COVID testing openly visible for either Vinod (or Geoff in Toronto). Geoff noted that in Mozambique there were staff matching your claim sticker with the baggage tag. Geoff also had very favourable reviews of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in Frankfurt -- which, depending on your departure time, may be a better lounge option that the Lufthansa lounges. Today's SWAPA number is 23.7%. That's the number of Pilots who got their preferred training week in 2018, our baseline year for Contract 2020. You don't need a math degree to realize that it's worse than if the schedule were picked randomly out of a hat. Lack of adherence to training preferences are just one problem we hear about from our pilots every month. When I'm talking to guys outside of SWAPA, they are generally surprised by how much of SWAPA's time and resources are spent handling training issues. While each of us go usually go to training once a year, as a whole, our group is exposed to thousands of CQT events combined. Add to that ETOPS training and ExTO requals and training has had an oversized impact on our Contract Admin Committee for a while now.Even Labor Relations is on record saying the training section of our current CBA needs to be redone. It was written for training we no longer even do with the transition to AQP. This week, the NC will present our Section 10 language to the Company which will cover training and upgrade procedures so we're going to talk to CAC Chair Seth Kornblum and Tier 1 Coordinator Lexi Taylor who worked in Training Scheduling, before joining SWAPA in 2015. They will help us understand the problems we need to address and exactly how we're going to do that in C2020.

Today's SWAPA Number is 196. That's the size of the Southwest's newest ETOPs bid group in Las Vegas. The timing and method of the announcement is causing our pilots to ask a lot of questions, so today on this special edition of the podcast, we're talking with SRC Chair Scott Plyler and Scheduling Analyst Cara Monahan who will try to fill in some of the blanks in the Company's recent announcement and help our pilots plan for the upcoming vacancy.
Ilha do Sal, Ilha de Ascensão, Saipan, Atol Midway… Conhece esses destinos? Heinrich wollte von uns wissen was da passiert. Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Operations Specifications (OPSPECS) are the specifications that the FAA assigns to airlines for such things as authorized routes, types of equipment, VFR and IFR operations, and alternate requirements. OPS Spec C055 discusses the requirement for alternate airports. From https://blog.airployment.com/common-121-takeoff-minimums-and-takeoff-alternate-questions/: One area that is sometimes difficult for new Part 121 pilots to comprehend is the exclusivity of takeoff minimums from landing minimums. Try to picture each as completely separate from the other. Just because a particular airport is below landing minimums doesn’t (necessarily) mean you can’t depart. Instead, first attempt to consider the takeoff minimums by themselves. If the weather, airport equipment, aircraft capabilities, and FARs/Ops Specs will permit such a takeoff, nothing prevents you from departing. Only after you’ve examined the feasibility of a takeoff should you look at the landing minimums. What if the airport is below landing mins? Then you’re required to have a takeoff alternate as outlined in 14 CFR 121.617. The exact weather mins for the takeoff alternate will be specified in the Ops Specs. In nearly all cases, your company Ops Specs will state the engine-inop, still-air distance in nautical miles (NMs); thus giving you an idea of the acceptable radius for an appropriate alternate. From https://www.airlinepilotforums.com/career-questions/23959-121-takeoff-minimums-takeoff-alternate-questions.html: 121.617b says the takeoff alternate has to meet the alternate minimums in the Ops Specs. Paragraph C55 is the create your own minimums paragraph based on the available approaches. Pretty much for one approach add 400 and 1 to the mins and for 2 approaches, 200 and a half to the higher minimuns. The approaches have to be to different runways unless you're ETOPS, then they have to be to separate runways. If you're good for CAT III and the airport has dual CAT III runways you can get your alternate minimums down to 200/1800RVR. If it was down to that, I'd see about having a second alternate added to the release.
This is part 4 of a 6-part series on transoceanic flights. Transoceanic flights date back to Charles Lindbergh's famous Spirit of St. Louis flight in 1927, but today the world is quite different, with numerous procedures and rules to keep us safe as we fly across the ocean. In part 4, I cover extended operations, or ETOPS, and how pilots plan flights with the ability to divert to airports halfway across the ocean.
Today we discussed Mailchimp list management and the difference between Tags, Groups and how and when to use each. We also discussed ETOPS.

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
ETOPS is an acronym for Extended Operations. The term used to signify Extended Range Operation with Two-Engine Airplanes but the meaning was changed by the US FAA when regulations were broadened to include aircraft with more than two engines. It refers to the standards and recommended practices (SARPS) issued by ICAO for Part 121 aircraft to fly long-distance routes that had been off-limits to twin-engined aircraft, and subsequently to extended range operations of four-engined aircraft (such as the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental). There are different levels of ETOPS certification, each allowing aircraft to fly on routes that are a certain amount of single-engine flying time away from the nearest suitable airport. For example, if an aircraft is certified for 180 minutes, it is permitted to fly any route not more than 180 minutes single-engine flying time to the nearest suitable airport. ETOPS applies to twins on routes with diversion time more than 60 minutes at one engine inoperative speed. For rules that also cover more than two engines, as in the case of the FAA, ETOPS applies on routes with diversion time more than 180 minutes for airplanes with more than two engines.
