Jeannette is joined by Dr Kameel Khan,a lawyer, judge, and founder of Project Remake, about his inspiring journey from Trinidad to the UK and his commitment to social justice. Kameel shares his early influences, including the civil unrest in Trinidad and the impact of his parents' belief in education. He also discusses his experiences defending death row inmates and the complexities of the justice system, highlighting the importance of understanding the human stories behind offenders. KEY TAKEAWAYS The journey into law and social justice was significantly influenced by early education and the support of family, highlighting the role of encouragement and vision in shaping one's future. Understanding the personal stories and backgrounds of offenders is crucial. They are not just statistics; they are individuals with families and potential who deserve a second chance. Project Remake, which started at Stanford University, focuses on entrepreneurship training for formerly incarcerated individuals, achieving a remarkable 6% reoffending rate compared to the national average of 54%. The financial burden of incarceration is significant, with costs reaching £50,000 per year per inmate. Investing in rehabilitation and employment opportunities for ex-offenders can lead to better societal outcomes and reduced costs. BEST MOMENTS "We have had 120 graduates, and we have had a 6% reoffending rate... The national average is near 54% in the first year and 70% in the second year." "We want to live in a society that doesn't write people off, that gives people a second chance." "How do we break that sort of aspect of judgment around this whole topic? Because I think that's a really big blocker as well, the perception." "It's very interesting... finding your voice is a huge thing... realising you could only be you, everyone else is taken." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It’s never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANT. The concept behind the local not-for-profit group RecycleForce can be stated in a very elegant maxim: “We're recycling electronics, and recycling lives.” When you get into the nitty-gritty details, RecycleForce is not nearly as refined, but accepting things that are rough around the edges is integral to its mission. Entrepreneur Gregg Keesling hit on this set of solutions to two persistent problems in the early 2000s: Give people who have just been released from jail or prison a much-needed opportunity for temporary employment by training and hiring them to salvage recyclable materials from electronic waste. The ex-offenders also receive comprehensive services designed to get their lives back on track, including job skills, personal counseling, professional mentoring, literacy training and connections to full-time, permanent jobs. RecycleForce has employed thousands of formerly incarcerated individuals since 2006 and recycled about 10 million pounds of waste. But there's so much more to the story. Keesling grew up about an hour outside of Indianapolis, and one of the major themes of his life has been transformation. Beginning at 16, he played a minor role in the drug trade, procuring marijuana with his friends and regularly driving his family's station wagon to Florida to pick up pounds of pot to transport back to Indiana for people who would pay a delivery fee. He moved to Jamaica for its easy access to pot, but he ended up becoming a straight-laced businessman who developed a vacation resort and joined the Rotary Club. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Keesling discusses how RecycleForce's new headquarters in Indianapolis will help it do more with the recyclable materials and the people it trains. But he also talks at length about his own story and how he has learned the importance of giving people a chance to change and succeed. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

The term is EX but this stays with them for LIFE so curbing or severely limiting, any possibility of future success and progression being a positive to societySo whilst we say people should be given a second chance once they have served their time, in reality, they are punished for life it would appearTune in and listen to the discussion - and please let us have your thoughts on this topicAlthough we much prefer effusive praise

In today's episode, we speak about restorative justice and how the Puppies for Parole program has not only taught compassion and self-confidence to the inmates but has also provided a safe place for dogs that would most likely not have survived their own traumas or be adopted.  Mr. Lombardi shares with us how Puppies for Parole has also changed the lives of families, staff and created a calmer prison culture.Meet George LombardiGeorge Lombardi has been working in the field of corrections since 1972, plying his master's degree in psychology to shape a more effective and humane system. His early work at the institution level in Missouri, when there were 3,900 inmates and 15,000 parolees, informed his later leadership as the director of that state's system of 21 prisons, 33,000 incarcerated offenders, and 60,000 people under community supervision. He also served as a juvenile justice consultant in Washington, DC, and San Francisco. He also holds a B.S. and M.S. Psychology - University of Central MissouriThis rich career has inspired Lombardi to share his message of hope for a future in which fewer people are trapped in the cradle-to-prison pipeline, more offenders are adequately prepared for re-entry into society, and there is a better understanding of how justice is restored.Learn more about these Programs here:https://doc.mo.gov/programs/puppies-parolehttps://www.prisonperformingarts.org/https://laughingbearbakery.org/Learn more about your host, Nelia Hutt at https://neliahutt.comhttps://www.travellivegive.com. Guest: Dr Casper Lӧtter | Conflict criminologist affiliated with the School of Philosophy at North-West University Appointing former prisoners – or ex-offenders – as prison wardens is an international trend in corrections. This idea is gaining traction in South Africa particularly after recent budget cuts in the Department of Correctional Services. Many posts in prisons remain vacant which may negatively affect its mandate of rehabilitation. Dr Casper Lӧtter argues for the merits of the proposal incase of South Africa.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is estimated that more than 11 million people in the UK have a criminal conviction.  This staggering figure equates to 1 in 3 men with the vast majority of offences occurring before the age of 30. Of course many of these convictions are for relatively minor offences and didn't require a stay at Her Majety's pleasure and have had no bearing on an individuals subsequent employment prospects.  But what if the offence was more serious and did involve a custodial sentence?  What then are your employment prospects? The New Futures Network  - a specialist part of the prison system in the UK that develops relationships between prisons and employers has revealed some key data surrounding the employment of prisoners: Only 17% of ex-offenders manage to get a job within a year of release;Ex-offenders who are employed are 9 times less likely to reoffend;81% of people think that businesses employing ex-offenders are making a positive contribution to society 92% of employers say diverse recruitment has enhanced their reputation, helping them win new contractsJoining me to discuss this issue are three individuals with a unique perspective on how one particular organisation has made the employment of those most marginalised in society into a major success story. Janet Leighton is the Director of Happiness at British multinational retailer The Timpson Group a family business renowned for its culture of upside down management and giving autonomy to its 2000+ stores in the UK and Ireland.  Timpson is one of the largest employers of ex-offenders in the UK with approximately 10% of their workforce having a criminal conviction. Darren Burns is Timpson's National Recruitment Ambassador. He specialises in both the recruitment and retention of ex-offenders and others who face barriers to employment.  Darren is a former police officer and his experience of working in some of the most challenging parts of the UK enables him to help break the offending cycle and ensure marginalised groups can find employment.  Sarah Barker has worked for the Timpson Group since 2010. She was recruited when she was a resident of HMP Askham Grange, an open prison in York. When released she continued to work for the Timpson and is now a part of the Timpson Locksmith admin team. This is a fascinating, heart-warming and positive interview that really shines a light on how engaging with some of society's most marginalised individuals has really paid dividends!

The thing about white privilege is that white people don't see it.  “White privilege” doesn't mean your life hasn't been hard, it simply means that your skin color isn't one of the things making it harder. This series is meant to share experiences of real people who have experienced racism and still experience it. The goal is to shine a light so that we ALL see it and take actionable steps to do something about it. CeCe Espeut's life is centered on three core values: God, Family and Education. After serving as an Sgt in the United States Marine Corps for ten years, CeCe made a series of bad decisions and ended up in prison for her involvement in a drug conspiracy. After leaving prison and completing her probation she applied for and was granted clemency in 2012 by then Florida Governor Rick Scott.  She is now in the process of applying for a Presidential Pardon.  CeCe speaks several times a week in jails, prisons and drug treatment centers to inmates from a place of intense passion & personal experience, explaining how they can get their criminal records sealed, expunged or pardoned and create a new life for themselves.   CeCe's focus is restoring hope to her audience by telling her story of how strategic planning and goal setting changed her life. CeCe also gives presentations and leads seminars and workshops on topics related to overcoming adversity and personal growth development. CeCe is not only funny, but she uses her charm & wit to disarm people and then deliver deep life lessons regarding reinventing ones-self after being in prison, that prison being either a mindset or a correctional facility. Working/hearing with (experiencing) CeCe is guaranteed to be a life-changing event. Starting with the “awkwardness" of stereotypes & prison statistics, CeCe delivers a powerful message followed with solutions that work.  CeCe sits on the board of the Broward County (FL) Re-Entry Coalition for Ex-Offenders.  CeCe Espeut is also well-seasoned wedding photographer whose guilty pleasures include white chocolate, social media and traveling the world. CeCe does about 40 weddings per year world-wide.  She picked up her first camera at 16 and has been in love with photography ever since. [Recorded 6 November 2019] Following decades of low fertility and long average lifespans, Japan's aging society is currently undergoing a social and demographic transformation on a scale never before seen in human history. Concerns about the care of Japan's aging population has concentrated either on the provision of formal care services through the Long-Term Care Insurance system or on the support of unpaid family and community carers. But what about older people who fall through the social 'safety net' of care? For more and more older people, one consequence of the Japan's aging society has been an increased risk of going to prison, usually as a result of minor nonviolent property crimes. As the prison population ages, guards and fellow prisoners become care assistants, while facilities, daily routines, food, and even the architecture of prisons are all become adapted to the older body. In many ways, it appears that in the aging society, prisons become nursing homes. This talk examines the lifeworlds of older ex-offenders to try to learn how this deepening connection between prison and social welfare is reshaping what it means to grow old in today's Japan. In particular, I look at the temporality of the carceral condition, as reflected in the rhythm of re-offending that has emerged as an alternative to the isolation and alienation of aging in the community. Is this rhythm and repetition an echo of other patterns of care and the life course? Or is it best seen as the inescapable machine of governmentality? Or perhaps there is something in-between (間), a space suspended in contradictions of frailty and violence, connection and separation, in and out?
