The resulting 26 images and poems are on display through March 2 at the Winona Arts Center, which is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.   Voegeli appreciated both artistic halves of the exhibit. He says the enlarged photographs, encompassing all types of transportation along the river, “looked almost like paintings.” The title has a dual meaning.Jim says: The river does just physically connect all of these photos together and poems. But as Peter said in the reception, the people that he met along the way, all the way up and down the Mississippi were such nice, friendly people that the meaning also has to do with all the people that live along the river, that we're all connected together.— Jim VoegeliIn June, the exhibit will be on view at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center (also known as Freedom Park) in Prescott, Wis. The show includes original music by Twin Cities duet The Champagne Drops. It runs Jan. 24 through Jan. 31 at the Hive Collaborative in St. Paul. Delta says: I'm really interested to see how Elena is going to talk about this, present it to an audience, and create art out of something that's, you know, a really sad personal loss. But from the description that she has on her event information, it sounds like she really wanted to let people know about this wonderful relationship she had with her dad, and probably some wisdom that he imparted. It's directed by Allison Vincent, who is a very well known local performer and theater maker. She actually did a show about [losing] her own father that was just performed at the fringe last summer.— Delta Rae GiordanoHigh school thespians' 35 minutes to shine Georgette Jones is an arts educator and advocate in Watson and she is excited to enter the competition season for the Minnesota State High School League one-act plays. From Pipestone to Mora, Detroit Lakes to Mountain Lake, each competing school has 35 minutes or less to shine with a play of their choosing, and Jones says the styles of show vary from comedy to drama to everything in between. The subsection tournaments begin today across the state. Find your nearest host school here. They competition culminates in a state festival held at the O'Shaughnessy at St Catherine University in St. Paul on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. Georgette says: Some of these schools are coming from well-funded programs with huge, wonderful facilities. And some of these schools have a stage at the end of a gym and a volunteer director. And yet, the quality of student acting and performance and different theater making criteria is just amazing. Every year, I never cease to be surprised by what I see on a stage at a one act play festival.— Georgette Jones

The city of Falcon Heights and St. Anthony Village are coming together for a workshop to consider a policing partnership Thursday night. Following the police killing of Philando Castille in 2016, Falcon Heights terminated their police contract with St. Anthony Village. Falcon Heights does not have their own police department, and since then has been contracting with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office. That partnership will be coming to an end this year. And now Falcon Heights is looking for a long-term policing solution. Helping them make that decision is the Center for Values-Based Initiatives. They came out with a more than 100 page report to help guide the city through their policing needs. Former Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom is the president of that organization and led the city through that work. He joined MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer.

www.commsolutionsmn.com- It's no secret, we hate odd year elections. Very few people come out, and the majority of those are activists, union members, and the uber political. Should 3,500 people decide who makes policy for a city of 50,000? Why don't we just make it easy for people to vote? We hear so much about making it as easy as possible for everyone to have their voice heard, and then so many places have these odd year elections. They are done solely so one side can control the election results. This is the wrong way to go about it. You will find odd year elections in small cities like Appleton and in big cities like Minneapolis and St Paul. Some races have competition and some are completely uncontested. How do races even go uncontested, let alone an entire slate of races in a single city or school district? There were numerous referendums and sales tax implementations on the ballot, which passed more in the metro than outstate. Minneapolis also has a number of races where candidates are either on the Democratic Socialist ticket and the Socialist Workers' Party ticket. Ilhan Omar hand-picked the new mayor of St Louis Park. Have fun with all that. We have to stop with the odd year elections. They do nothing, but secure the DFL's hold on local elections. We also discussed the recent death of Matthew Perry and those that went too soon that have left an impact on us. It prompts a discussion on the search for meaning, and I think we may have figured it out. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? www.commsolutionsmn.com- Everyone is talking about 2024 and who will be running for president. Did you know that many places will be having school and municipal elections this year? There's one problem... almost no one votes in odd year elections. Townships can have elections whenever, as can school districts with referendum votes. We currently see totals of 10, 15, 20%, of total registered voters turning out at the polls. That's terrible, and we don't understand why more people don't turn out to have more control over who governs them and how much they pay in taxes. Why are these elections placed on a year when no one shows up? Because they are easy to control, especially when the Democrats can turn out their unions and special interest groups. Why don't others make more of an effort? Some of these cities also run Ranked Choice Voting to further confuse our elections, muddying the waters so that no one would ever know if there was fraud in the system. We need to have a uniform and simplified election system so that people with poor intent can't manipulate things from the shadows. We also discuss the media freak out over the Washington Post poll that showed Biden with a 36% approval rating, and losing to both President Trump and Governor DeSantis. The discussion then turns to the many problems we are having with our electoral system. Oh boy. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? In 164 years of Minnesota statehood, no Black woman had ever served in the Minnesota Senate. That changes in a big way starting Jan. 3. Minnesota voters earlier this month elected three Black women to the state Senate. All three are DFLers. One is the youngest woman ever elected to the state senate.  MPR News host Angela Davis brought all three women together for a candid conversation about what drew them to politics, their goals for the upcoming term and the perspective they'll bring to the chamber. Guests:   Zaynab Mohamed, 25, is senator-elect for Minnesota Senate District 63, which includes parts of south Minneapolis.  Erin Maye Quade, 36, is senator-elect for Minnesota Senate District 56, which includes Apple Valley and parts of Rosemount and Eagan.    Clare Oumou Verbeten, 27, is senator-elect for Minnesota Senate District 66, which includes Roseville, Lauderdale, Falcon Heights and parts of St. Paul.  The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity. Click the audio player above to listen to the full conversation. Let's go back to the night of the election. What was going through your head when you found out you won? Mohamed: It was exciting. It was a roomful of family, close friends and supporters. It was pretty private. We didn't make it public because I wanted to be intentional about who was in the room. I was right in front of my mom and next to me was my current senator. There were a lot of tears, excitement and screams. Maye Quade: So Dakota County is notorious for being a little bit later than the rest of the counties in getting their votes in. I have a 6-month-old baby and my wife was also organizing so she was downtown doing the statewide stuff and I was home with the baby. I put her down to bed and and it was just refreshing. I did a really really silent big dance so I did not wake up the baby. There was no screaming, no crying but a lot of happy smiles and a nerdy dance by myself. Oumou Verbeten: I was at home. I wanted to be with my family and friends. I actually got an amazing surprise, just a few days before the election my sister and her husband and little nephew came in to surprise me and be here for the election, I had no idea they were coming. I just wanted to be with people who really made this happen and got me here. It was refreshing to see the numbers come in, just this sort of relief and excitement, I just felt so thankful to be there with my people. When you think of the absence of the Black female perspective in the Senate, what was missing? Mohamed: We've been missing not making policies on the perspectives and experiences of Black women. There have been 165 years where we have created policies and budgets and our life experiences have never been at the table. We know good policies come from people who understand the experiences and the impacts of the policies we create. Oumou Verbeten: Just so much. I've been asked about this question a lot and I always think about my mom. She is a Black woman and the role model in my life. She had to go through so much to bring me into the world. She immigrated and had to start over, learn a language and build her career. She is at a small cleaning business, so she's been cleaning throughout the front lines of the pandemic so now my mom gets to have her daughter be one of the first Black women to serve in the Senate. We all come from strong moms, there's just so many amazing Black women working every day to survive in this state and I just really want to honor that. I think it's a really really heavy burden but I am also really proud to be holding it. Maye Quade: I think when we have conversations about people without people, they become very theoretical conversations. It's not as personal and it's not as rooted in experience. We have had a democracy entirely without Black women in the state of Minnesota, and I don't think you can have a democracy without Black women. We are finally going to be at the table. I think the fact that we have some of the largest racial disparities in the nation is evident of the lack of representation in both chambers. Ben Hovland | MPR News Erin Maye Quade (from left), Clare Oumou Verbeten and Zaynab Mohamed sit with MPR News host Angela Davis inside the MPR News studios in St. Paul on Nov. 21. Did people tell you that you were too young to run? Were there discouraging voices? Mohamed: I cannot tell you how many people told me I was too young to be doing this. They would say, “Are you ready? What do you even know? What does your resume look like?” And often it is people who've never lived outside this country or never been through war or whose family never had to immigrate here and help their family. It's an unspoken rule that you need to wait your turn and that's just not true. Oumou Verbeten: I hear it so often and I just don't care. I know my community, I know they're ready for this and I had to trust that and bring a message that resonates with folks. I had conversations with people directly so they know what I am fighting for. I will put in the work for my community because I love them so much. It's not about your age or your race, it's about your fight and fierceness. Maye Quade: I've had people feel lots of different ways about me running for office and I had a really tough primary. When people say wait your turn I think what they really mean is well, we'll tell you when it's your turn, but it'll never be your turn. You have to own it and that is how I got past the age thing and mom thing.

A jury failed to convict the officer. Still, Castile's legacy lives on in the people he inspired. On Sunday, activists with Visual Black Justice led a theatrical performance created in response to his death. Participants marched along University Ave to the state capitol. They carried mock coffins, body bags, and tombstones engraved with names of victims of police brutality. Founder Athena Papagiannopoulos (Papa-gin-ah-polis) wants people to keep talking about policing, even when it's not on the news.“Don't wait until it's someone you love or someone you know, or someone you kind of knew,” said Papagiannopoulos. “We have to come out here in the streets for these families and make sure we're preventing this situation from happening to more of our loved ones.”After Philando's death, the Castile family created a foundation to support victims of gun and police violence. This evening, the family is hosting a candlelight vigil in his honor. To Castile's former classmate Adrian Perryman, the commemoration serves to keep public safety on people's minds.“I think doing something on the anniversary is a reminder, even if nothing has happened in the last week, last month, just keep that same energy that you had five years ago, and keep fighting until nothing happens like this, like what happened to George Floyd and other individuals in the community,” said Perryman.Castile was beloved by students in Saint Paul schools, where he was known to pay for their lunches when they couldn't afford it.In 2016, Perryman and other Central High School alumni created a college scholarship in Castile's name that has since funded four students. The scholarship is geared towards encouraging black men to pursue careers in education.

Top state officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA, have announced that Minnesota will be home to one of the newest locations of a federally-run mass vaccination site.   Gov. Tim Walz says the vaccination site comes due to the state’s request for a fully-supplied mass vaccination site to further strengthen the state’s vaccine push.   The site will be located at the Minnesota State fairgrounds in Falcon Heights. Over eight weeks, this site will receive 168,000 vaccine doses, a combination of Pfizer’s and Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine. These doses are in addition to the state’s current allocation of vaccine doses.   Vaccinations will begin at the fairgrounds on April 14 and will be available for those living in the certain zip codes near the fairgrounds. The zip codes have been highlighted by the CDC as having the highest Social Vulnerability Index. They are within Ramsey and Hennepin County and are listed at mn.gov.   The site will be by appointment only. Minnesotans who live within these zip codes are encouraged to sign up for the vaccine connector tool. Information on directly booking appointments through a call center will be shared soon.   There will be no cost for vaccination, nor will Minnesotans need to provide an ID or medical insurance.   Meanwhile, COVID-19 community coordinators continue efforts to get vaccine information and other resources to the state’s diverse communities, including help with transportation, housing and language barriers during the pandemic.

Quilter Terri Charlsen of McGregor, Minn. is sharing the word about the Community Canvas, an art exhibit at the Jaques Art Center in Aitken. The Arts Center distributed blank canvases of varying sizes to anyone who wanted to participate, and the resulting collection showcases the talents of residents young and old. There are just under 200 canvases this year and they’re painted, beaded, quilted and more. Charlsen said part of the fun is “searching for who did what.” Community Canvas will be on display through Oct. 24. Courtesy of Geordin Crist "Rainbow Body", 8x10 poured acrylic on canvas by artist Geordin Crist. This piece is an interpretation of grief, Crist says. "When my father passed, it felt dark and deep and quiet, but it also helped me learn that behind grief is love. I think acceptance comes when you can learn to hold both the dark and the light." Art lover Jessica Bergman of northeast Minneapolis appreciates the paintings of Geordin Crist of Falcon Heights. Crist paints in different styles, but since the start of the pandemic, they have been experimenting with paint pours and posting the results on Instagram multiple times a week. Crist creates paintings without the manipulation of brushes. Bergman finds that these abstract works sometimes evoke the sea or flowers, and she’s drawn to Crist’s bold colors and contrasts. Editor T. Martin Crouse of Minneapolis is looking forward to an improv/burlesque fusion event, “Whose Bra is it Anyway?” at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Zoom audience chooses the music before the performance, leaving the performers just minutes to create a routine. This event used to take place quarterly and in-person but will now happen over Zoom. “People hear ‘burlesque’ and they think ‘stripping,’ but it’s not; it’s undressing with humor, and that really elevates it to an art form that is just surprisingly invigorating,” Crouse said. “The burlesque community is very body-positive, and really embraces the LGBTQ community. You’re going to see a lot of colorful characters of all shapes and sizes. I can’t stress the comedy enough.”

On July 6, 2016, Philando Castile was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. In the weeks and months that followed, systemic issues that had been present below the surface in Falcon Heights and surrounding cities erupted into the open. The atmosphere was one of rage, pain, resentment, and distrust. In some ways, this was an unlikely setting for constructive dialogue that had any chance of rebuilding the community. And yet, that is the story that we hear in Episode 3 of "Thanks for Listening". We meet John Thompson, Philando’s close friend, who talks about his own activism after the shooting, and what happened when he became involved in a series of facilitated conversations that brought together citizens, activists, city leaders, and police officers. We also hear from Sharon Press, who pulls back the curtain on these conversations and explains how she and others went about the hard work of organizing them in order to create opportunities for healing. Almost three years to the day after Philando was shot, John and Sharon reflect on their personal journeys, their unexpected friendship with one another, and how their communities have changed.

It feels like the news won’t stop. It feels like the second this is published there will be another name to add to the list. This week on Stories with a Heartbeat , we turn to poetry. Poetry does not have all the answers or some magic solution, but it connects us, it helps us find meaning, and it inspires us to think and act. This episode is inspired by 3 events that have occurred in the since last week's show:  - The shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, LA  - The shooting of Philandro Castile in Falcon Heights, MN  - The subsequent shooting of 11 police officers in Dallas I was reluctant to talk about my story of grief because I didn't want to listen to others talk about theirs. I would compare the two and not give any credibility to your grief if your loved one didn't meet some violent end. Simply put, your narrative wasn't the same as mine, so it couldn't be real. I believer the same holds true for the events of the past week. There is a divide in the U.S. between people who believe police are doing their job and those who feel the police are racist or unfairly treating the very citizens they are supposed to protect. We need to listen to each other and UNDERSTAND what the other side is saying. Only then will we begin the healing process. If you haven't heard that episode yet pause this episode and go back and listen to it. Michael is a Baltimore-based police reform activist who, after spending a career in the United States Marine Corps and Baltimore Police Department, has torn down the blue wall of silence. He has become a vocal advocate of a new era of civilian-led policing. While completing his doctorate studies, Michael works as much as possible with grassroots activism on the streets of Baltimore, where his most valuable lessons were learned, and makes media and speaking appearances to further the discussion on police reform and the needs of the people. You can find him on Facebook and Twitter. You can find his website at michaelawoodjr.net. He is also a speaker for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Their website can be found at leap.cc Here's the GoFundMe page for Radio Revolver, the podcast network you'll hear Michael A. Wood Jr. discuss on today's episode: https://www.gofundme.com/RadioRevolver A quick programming note: In 48 hours between when we recorded this on Wednesday and when it's dropping today, on Friday, the following news broke: Alton Sterling was killed by police on video in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Philando Castile was killed by police on video in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. Five police officers were killed and seven were injured by a shooter in Dallas, Texas. You won't hear Michael and I discuss any of these incidents in this episode, but rest assured, the next time he's on we'll get to all of them. Still, this conversation is very relevant. And now, on to the show.
