24 november 1991.

The rest of us were only too happy to derail Dan's well-thought out hitchhiker themed week in order to produce a hastily assembled and confused tribute of sorts to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, starting with a discussion of the Top 5 Queens. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (2018) is a biopic of Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), charting his journey from talented and ambitious baggage handler Farrokh Bulsara in the 1970's to frontman of arena rock band Queen, culminating in a recreation of their triumphant and iconic 1985 Live Aid performance.  Paced like a Wikipedia plot summary this movie's biggest crime is its inauthenticity: both its factual inaccuracy but more importantly it never feels very real and consequently I never felt I knew Freddie Mercury better after having watched it. Malek's excessive performance is so distracting I couldn't work out if he was doing a caricature or simply trying to keep his prosthetic teeth in, and a broad and formulaic story never seems to have anything interesting at all to say about race, LGBTQ+ lifestyles or the experience of having HIV in the 1980's during the height of the AIDS crisis , territory covered much better by PRIDE or the British mini-series IT'S A SIN. It's impossible not to mention an excruciating cameo from Mike Myers as a fictional embodiment of Queen's critics, an EMI executive of limited artistic vision who thinks the track from which the movie bears its name is too long, composed of nonsensical words and that teenagers will never bang their heads to in a car. Get it? Because that is the exact thing WAYNE'S WORLD did! If the best part for you was the recreation of the Live Aid performance where you can enjoy Malek pretending to be Freddie and lip syncing in front of the kind of weird CGI crowd you'd usually find in a video game just watch the f*cking original concert. It's not really a surprise this one is such a mess. Sasha Baron Cohen was attached to the project for a long time but dropped out, objecting to what he saw as the sanitisation of Freddie's story by the producers, in particular I suspect Brian May and Roger Taylor who are portrayed as the most responsible members of the group and consequently are boring nonentities. Director Brian Singer was fired part way into filming which might have been because he rarely showed up to set leaving cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel in charge much of the time, or may have had something to do with the tsunami of sexual misconduct allegations which were heading his way, and the last third of filming and all the post production were completed by Dexter Fletcher (ROCKETMAN). In the interests of balance I should probably say that not all of the Bad Dads felt the same way - in fact angrily so in some cases - and that the movie won several Oscars, Malek's performance in particular drawing praise, while a win for Best Achievement in Film Editing completely redefines the meaning of the words "Best", "Achievement" and "Editing". I can honestly say I've never seen a microphone get an origin story before, so there is that. KING ROLLO is another David McKee creation, the man-child sovereign of an unspecified kingdom who is enraged when his resident Magician reads his comic first and then ignores his dinner guest Queen Gwen before they are all deposed in a violent, bloodthirsty revolution. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

The boys continue reading Aono's slice of life manga, as the story explores the main character's impact on those around him. And after 80 episodes and reading 18 manga, we finally see our first instance of a trans-female character. Here's hoping many more surprises and new stories are told and read! Skip synopsis @ 3:06 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   081: I'll Give It My All… Tomorrow vol. 3 Chapters 11 to 16 ‘The Times' and ‘The Guy's Melody' With Bonus Chapters ‘Mister Murakami, Manga Editor ‘and ‘Life of Tanaka' By Shunju Aono Translation by Akemi Wegmuller Lettering by Steven Rhyse   Shizuo's journey to become a mangaka is tested by his father, who refuses to believe that his son has any talent, alongside a job slinging burgers that takes a spiritual toll he struggles. At first Shizuo escapes into a fantasy of what his life may ideally be like in the next five years, only for it to end with an honest conversation with himself and God. To increase his luck of getting published Shizuo gives himself the pen name “Person Nakamura” and works as an assistant for a successful mangaka. Albeit he does the assistant job only as a favour to his crush, the editor Mayumi Meguro. When Shizuo meets his friends Miyata and Ichinozawa, they tell him that they have decided to start a bakery business together, having been somewhat inspired by Shizuo's tenacity and willingness to chase his dreams. Shizuo himself is asked to give a unique name for the bakery shop, but his two friends are not the only ones to take inspiration, Shizuo's editor, Mr. Yu Murakami, leaves Ekke productions to live as their honest self, a woman hostess. Leaving Shizuo stuck to find a new editor.   Topics: Discussion on how the main character influences the other characters, and after 80 episodes and 18 manga we finally have the first appearance of a trans female character. Dialog bubbles from characters who are not visible in panel. And whom we never actually see make an appearance. James and Will are not to keen on this type of jarring storytelling in manga form. James talks about his favourite chapter, ‘The Dignity of Middle Age'; where Shunju works with the assistants Yamada and Sakamoto, and often punctuates the chapter with his words… “I'm middle aged and… (I'm very conciliatory, I totally get it, I speak my mind) James and Will take the time to reflect on the themes of the story and use it to talk about their relationship with their fathers as they pursued their own kind of dreams at one time in their lives. The good use of a pen name, in fact the famous singer Freddy Mercury's real name is Farrokh Bulsara, born in Zanzibar. Interestingly the famous horror author Stephen King has used the pen name Richard Bachman, who is also a fictional character created and played by Stephen King himself.     Other references:   Kojima Yoshio is a japanese comedian. “Beta Nuri” a.k.a. “Spotting the blacks”, this is one of the Jobs Shizuo has as an assistant whilst making Manga. Manju, one of the greatest inventions known to man, a vegan confection that goes well with tea. James highly recommends Matcha Manju. John Lennon, Imagine Chapter “Live to be 300” Errata (Japanese word for Error, meaning typo, spelling mistake) Shizuo's T-Shirts: God, Dobu, Rage (seen on teenage Shizuo), Festa (Possibly misspelling of Fiesta), Bravo, Publication, Revamp, Figure, Semi Pro     Facebook Instagram Twitter Official Website   Email

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we explore the life, love, songs, and death of the ultimate rock and roll front man, Freddie Mercury. He wasn't the typical British rock god people assume him to be. In fact, he was born in Zanzibar, not the UK. His birth name was Farrokh Bulsara, and he didn't live in England until he was 12 years old when his parents were fleeing a violent revolution in their home country. Unsurprisingly, he was a gifted musician early on, learning the piano at age 8 and being able to parrot just about any song shortly thereafter. He started singing in bands before he was even a teenager, but he only started to seriously do gigs when he moved to London with his long time fiancé Mary Austin. He sang in small bands with horrible names (Sour Milk Sea, The Hectics, Ibex, and Wreckage) before he met guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, to become lead singer of their band Smile (bass player John Deacon joined later). The released an album a couple years later, and then started to prolifically drop an album a year through the early 70s. They met with some success with the album Sheer Heart Attack in 1974, and the rest was music history. They started to tour, and Freddie Mercury's charisma sold out house after house. Freddie turned out to be a musical genius with a four octave range, and only sleeping three or four hours a night (something that Prince also did, which I guess is a sign of musical genius!). Eventually, no music venue could hold them, so they became the first band to sell out sporting arenas. Their live shows culminated in their Live Aid performance, which is largely considered to be the greatest rock and roll concert of all time. From “We Will Rock You” to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and from “Under Pressure” to “Flash Gordon,” the larger-than-life stadium glam rock hits kept coming. Through it all, there were of course parties, cocaine, and lots and lots of sex. This is what ultimately lead to Freddie Mercury’s AIDS-related death in 1991. So, was Freddie Mercury gay or bisexual? What happened between him and his female fiancé of 7 years? How did she get along with his boyfriend? Why did he keep his AIDS diagnosis a secret? To whom did he leave his fortune, and why? What was with his broken microphone stand? And why didn't he fix those teeth?!? Listen, laugh, learn.   Visit our Sources: https://www.biography.com/musician/freddie-mercury https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury http://www.freddiemercury.com/ https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/j5yn37/freddie-mercury-peter-freestone-interview https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/freddie-mercury-facts-you-need-to-know/ http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20191010-who-was-the-real-freddie-mercury http://mentalfloss.com/article/22465/facts-about-freddie-mercury https://planetradio.co.uk/magic/entertainment/music/freddie-mercury/ https://www.boredpanda.com/freddie-mercury-facts-icecreammaam/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/1186713/Freddie-Mercury-sex-gay-boyfriend-girlfriend-Mary-Austin-interview-Bohemian-Rhapsody-fans https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Cook_(songwriter)

“Don’t stop me now. Cause I’m having a good time. I don’t wanna stop at all!” Hello, everybody! I am Georgiana your English teacher and founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help you speak English fluently. Speaking English is easier than it seems! You just have to use the right material and techniques. Today I’m going to talk about a band named Queen and the legendary Freddie Mercury. And with a mini-story, you’re going to practice your speaking in English while learning fascinating facts about Freddie. Have you heard or a band named Queen? Of course, you have. I’m just kidding. :) And how much do you know about their singer and songwriter Freddie Mercury?  Some people believe that Mercury was British, but did you know that he was born in Zanzibar, September 1946? You probably guessed by now that his real name wasn’t Freddie Mercury. His birth name was Farrokh Bulsara. I was curious about how to pronounce his name, so I have done my research, though I’m still not sure I’m pronouncing it correctly. Did you know that Freddie was born with four extra teeth in the back of his mouth? He never fixed his teeth because he feared it would ruin his voice. In 1964 Freddie's family moved to England, and in 1966, he enrolled in Ealing College of Art to study graphic illustration. There he met Tim Staffell who introduced him to his band Smile. Watching Smile made Freddie realize that he really wanted to be in a band himself. Therefore, after he finished his diploma in graphic art and design, he joined a band called Ibex, playing the lead guitarist. Later on, he formed the band Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. He wrote numerous hits for Queen, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Somebody to Love," "Don't Stop Me Now," and "We Are the Champions." He also conducted a solo career and was a guest producer and musician for other artists.   READ THE FULL TEXT HERE: speakenglishpod.com

Matt Lucas chooses Freddie Mercury of Queen. The author of Bohemian Rhapsody, Lesley-Ann Jones, joins him to dissect a legend. To what extent can a troubled childhood contribute to an adult's need to perform? Farrokh Bulsara was born in Zanzibar, sent to school in India, and fled revolution in Zanzibar to Feltham, Middlesex, aged 18. His family were Parsees and Freddie, as he became better known, was brought up as a Zoroastrian. He also became one of the greatest singer songwriters in British rock history. Matt Lucas - of Little Britain, Shooting Stars and Doctor Who - was entranced by Freddie from an early age. In this revealing, funny tribute, Matt explains how Freddie inspired him to perform, and unveils his Montserrat Caballe impression on the world. Lesley-Ann Jones knew the band as a 'young scumbag journalist' and provides an eyewitness account of watching Freddie from the wings. The presenter is Matthew Parris, the producer in Bristol is Miles Warde.

Con esfuerzo había alcanzado a grabar “El espectáculo debe continuar” (“The Show Must Go On”), escrita especialmente para él por Brian May.

In this episode, I thank you for putting up with my podcasting learning curve. I'm used to singing into a microphone, but not talking into one. I observe the 22nd anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury, one of my favorite musicians of all time. He was born Farrokh Bulsara, but chose the best stage name ever. Just like when JFK was assassinated, people remember where they were when they found out Freddie died. I was in Weatherford, Oklahoma, finishing up my degree with classes like bowling and tennis. I was dating a grunge girl. Freddie was one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS. I went over to my best friend, Phil's, apartment, and we listened to Queen and tried to come to terms with the bad news. Queen's Greatest Hits from about 1981 was the first Queen record I bought. It had "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" on it, and I was only ten or eleven years old, but I liked that. "Flash" was a huge hit, and I love it. I even try to sing it for you. "The Game" was the first rock record I ever bought, and it changed my life. I also bought "The Long Run" at the same time. My grandma bought them for me at KMart. I bet she thought I was going into a phase. The Eagles were good, but not as good as Queen. "The Game" was the first Queen album to use synthesizers. They always created their futuristic sound just with Brian May's guitar. "Play the Game" is an emotional hammer, followed by the funky "Dragon Attack". "Need You Loving Tonight", "Crazy Little Thing" etc. They all sang except Deacon. "Prime Jive" is sung by the drummer and it rocks! The album ends with some ballads that will knock you in the dirt. I implore you to seek out that album. The next album of theirs I got into was "The Works" with "Radio Gaga" on it. It had some other minor hits like "I Want To Break Free". "It's a Hard Life" sounds just like "Play the Game". There were lots of synths on that album, but not as many as on "Hot Space", which sounds like a sequenced album. I talk about "Life Is Real", which Freddie wrote for John Lennon. I got into "Innuendo" a lot, which was in 1991, the year Freddie died. It had a different sound. Freddie was very sick and almost couldn't sing sometimes. He had a strong will to perform, and it wasn't for money. He could play piano better than Elton John. There are some full length shows on YouTube you should watch. "The Show Must Go On" closed the album, and Freddie was really hurting when he recorded it. In 1988 I got Queen II. It's a very different album, talking about fairies and stuff, like Tolkien. "Ogre Battle" is as complex as Metallica. I bought an import CD that had a pound notes price sticker on it, which made me proud. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a rocker and has a great cover. You should check it out. It's got "Killer Queen" on it and "Now I'm Here", as well as the gay anthem of all time, "Misfire". John Deacon wrote it and played guitar. Freddie sings like an angel and there is much double entendre. Then they did a trio of albums named after Marx Brothers movies. The first two, "A Day at the Races" and "A Night at the Opera" are the finest example of layered rock music ever. I bought a gold plated CD of "Opera". Both of these albums have period pieces like vaudeville on them. British families after the war learned instruments and had family time together playing songs. They didn't watch TV. "Made In Heaven" is the final Queen album. The cover is beautiful and looking at it made me tear up. It features Freddie in front of Lake Geneva. Freddie was dying during the recording, but the song's messages are hopeful. That was Freddie, and I miss him. I speculate whether Freddie's buck teeth contributed to who he became as a performer. Samson had his hair, and Barbara has her nose, and Freddie had his teeth. I saw a picture of him as a child and his teeth were huge. That humbled him. Now kids have too much unearned self-esteem. I used to feel like I was showing off just by wearing sunglasses. Freddie faced down what stared him in the mirror and overcame it as the biggest star on Earth. Next, I observe the 45th anniversary of the Kinks "We Are the Village Green Preservation Society" album, which is a masterpiece. They are the quintessential British band. The album has lots of character studies and role playing inspired by the Beatles. The Village Green is a working class place in the post war era mentioned on multiple albums. The post war era was very influential to British bands like the Stones, the Who, and others. They were very worldly at a young age. All the Kinks albums of the period were loose concept albums. Ray Davies was lamenting the passing of old British traditions on these albums. He was part of the cultural change, but at the same time he was melancholy about it. The album came out in 1968 and was recorded at Pye Studios. Ray produced it. You wouldn't know the songs unless you like the Kinks, but all the songs are good. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com.
