Danny Vega joins us for this week's episode, where we talk about a range of topics. In this show, we go deep into Danny's faith and the path that God has set him on, and what he currently doing. Danny is passionate about biblical manhood and family leadership, and we have a great discussion on these topics.Danny is a well-known influencer in the Keto and Carnivore community, so I had to pick his brain on all things keto as well as get his take on intermittent fasting. We cover mental clarity, the best ways to fast, and the wrong way to do intermittent fasting, which was eye-opening. Danny pulls back the curtains on what its like to be an influencer and also reveals what's next for he and his family. A native of Miami, Florida, Danny received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 2004 where he played football. He then earned a Master of Science in Human Performance from the University of Florida, where he worked with the national championship men's basketball team. In 2006, Danny became the Strength & Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams become the 2007 conference champions. Danny was also a top ranked power lifter and indoor rower. He called himself a Christian since 1996, but since 2020 he realized he was not on the narrow path. In November 2021 he had an encounter with the All Mighty that renewed his faith & walk with our Creator—and since then he‘s learned that a lack of obedience & not walking in the spirit is what has plagued the modern church, and why it lacks fruit. Today's guest runs multiple businesses from the Ketogenic Athlete to the Fat Fueled Family. He is someone who has always been interested in taking his health and fitness into his own hands, competing in multiple sports like football and then moving on to work in a sports-filled coaching career. At the University of Florida he worked with the national championship men's basketball team, along with women's basketball, tennis, and golf programs and then went on to become the Strength & Conditioning Coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams win the 2007 conference championship and making it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. He has been out of collegiate Strength & Conditioning for almost a decade, but he has continued to compete in sports such as Crossfit, powerlifting, half marathons, and, more recently, rowing. In June of 2016, he discovered the ketogenic lifestyle and never looked back. Kristin Barishian is a CPA and marathon runner from Boston, MA. Kristin has struggled with an eating disorder for most of her life, being diagnosed with anorexia in high school and having a revolving door experience with hospitals and eating disorder clinics. For the past 20 years, prior to the carnivore diet, Kristin followed a low fat, moderate protein and high carb diet to fuel her training runs, as she thought this was the perfect diet for a marathoner. She ate 6-8 times per day as she was always hungry. Her daily diet consisted of two very, very, very large salads a day, lots of rice cakes, puffed rice cereal, egg whites, turkey, chicken, non fat plain greek yogurt, protein powder and protein bars. She drank a ton of diet coke and other low calorie beverages to fill her up, and was ingesting up to 20 packets of fake sweeteners per day. She was depressed and had high anxiety all the time, and constantly thought about food. Kristin was diagnosed with anemia in October 2018 and was hospitalized for five days. She spent the next two months getting iron infusion on a weekly basis. As a result, she turned to the keto diet, which was extremely scary for her as she was afraid of red meats and fats. The keto diet saved Kristin's life. Not only did it help cure her anemia, but it helped lower her anxiety and give her mental clarity. After a year of doing the keto diet, Kristin decided to experiment with the carnivore diet, as she still felt like she was addicted to the sweeteners and she still had stomach pains and bloating from eating so many veggies. The carnivore diet has helped Kristin feel free from food addiction, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After successfully running Baystate Marathon in Lowell as a keto marathoner, Kristin is excited to run her first Boston Marathon April 20, 2020 as a carnivore marathoner.   Kristin loves the carnivore community and is so appreciative of all the people she has reached out to and who has helped guide her through her meat journey :) Kristin is a CPA who loves working with keto and carnivore companies as their accountant. This week's guest is Carlos Dones. Carlos was born in Chicago, IL and currently resides in LA. After finishing his enlistment in the US Marine Corps, Carlos found himself out of shape and bored to tears. So he decided to start running again, something he did a lot of in his youth and during his military service. But it wasn't enough for him to just run, he had to do something that challenged him, that forced him to prove himself capable of achieving something that most people would never be able to. He decided to run ridiculously long races. Carlos has participated in multiple endurance events over the past 20 years, including 50-mile runs, 100-mile runs, multiple-day, non-stop events, such as his most recent race, the Grand2Grand, which is 170 miles, 7 day, 6 stage race across the Utah desert in September of 2105. And he did it all while keto. After deciding that he needed to find a better way, he got together with Vinnie Tortorich, and Vinnie coached him on his nutrition. Carlos says that he would never have been able to finish the race if he wasn't ketogenic. Today we will talk about his mindset, his training and the way he fuels for these events. Part One of my interview with Maura and Danny Vega!   Danny Vega:  I grew up in Miami, Florida and I have always been interested in nutrition and fitness. Ever since I was a young kid, I wanted to be a “strong man”.  In high school, I was the starting runningback for my football team, and led the county in rushing yards. I then went on to receive my bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 2004, where I was a member of the football team and a three-time Dean’s List recipient. After college, I pursued my Master’s of Science in Human Performance from the University of Florida, where I worked with the national championship men’s basketball team, along with women’s basketball, tennis, and golf programs. I then went on to become the Strength & Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams win the 2007 conference championship and making it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. To read a Richmond Times Dispatch article on my approach, click here.  I have been out of collegiate Strength & Conditioning for almost a decade, but I have continued to compete in sports such as crossfit, powerlifting, half marathons, and now rowing. In June of 2016 I discovered the ketogenic lifestyle and I never looked back. I found so many benefits within a week of switching, that I knew this would be my new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating myself up with heavy lifting were gone. I regained control over my hunger and found a mental clarity and increase in productivity that I had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, our two boys joined us. Desmond, our eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, our youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Our children are immune to cravings. It has been an amazing thing to see. We thought our kids were “picky” just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds and now they crave real, nourishing food like the recipes you will find on this PDF. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way! We understand that transitioning the family can be challenging, so we hope this blog helps you conveniently transition your entire family to a low carb lifestyle so that you, too, can experience all of the profound benefits we have! Maura Vega:  I’m Maura Vega, or as many of you know me, Fat Fueled Mom. I grew up in Miami, Florida, and was a dancer for most of my life until I graduated high school. I was classically trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. I competed throughout high school winning multiple team and individual awards. I found my love for fitness once I graduated high school and started college. Unfortunately for me (a curvy latin girl), the body type that was in style back then was tall and thin. Being a dancer, there was always focus around the way I looked and I always longed to have that tall and thin figure. I’ve been dieting since high school and it has been quite the battle over the years. Eating disorders and body dysmorphia have plagued me for as long as I can remember. I’ve experimented with vegetarian, paleo, and IIFYM. It wasn’t until I found the ketogenic lifestyle that I was finally able to heal my body and repair my metabolism, as well as my mind and my relationship with food. I started Keto in June of 2016. After a 2 year battle with Postpartum Depression after the birth of my youngest, I knew I had to make a change. I was eager to get off medications and I knew that the ketogenic lifestyle was my only hope. I have now been keto for almost 2 years and I’m happy to say that not only have my depression symptoms been drastically reduced, my anxiety has also improved, I feel the best I’ve ever felt and it continues to get better. Seeing how impactful this lifestyle can be on our bodies, I decided to help transition my children to this healthy way of life in hopes that it would relieve them of some of the ailments they had. I now eat for health and performance, and I never feel deprived. I haven’t binged or restricted food since I started back in June of 2016. Our boys have now been keto for a little over 8 months and I’m happy to report that not only has my oldest found relief from his asthma and allergies, but we’ve also witnessed a major improvement in our little one’s mood and eczema. They are still kids, so they have treats at birthday parties and special occasions; we don’t want them to feel left out. However, we have seen how powerful keto is at fixing broken relationships with food. Our oldest rarely is phased by treats he passes by; he truly does not crave them. My little one spit out half of his Halloween candy last year because he didn’t like it. It is absolutely amazing to see these changes in my children, knowing that I’m setting them up for a lifetime of success.  I’m so happy that my family and I have found this amazing way of life. There’s still a lot of misinformation about what works and what doesn’t work in the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet is such a therapeutic diet and it heals our bodies in such a way that the body that we had a year from starting keto was a completely different body from the body we have today. Holding fear around change actually holds us back from actually accomplishing more with our eating styles. By giving ourselves permission to eat carbs when we feel it’s best for our body, it puts the onus on our body to tell us when it’s time to have carbs. Fasting is a tool that you can use at your disposal. Action Steps: Make sure that you’re doing the ketogenic diet right and figure out what works for you. Take note of your blood color during your period and find out what it could mean for your health. Switch to using a menstruation cup instead of the usual menstrual pads. Use carb-ups to your benefit. Use fasting as a tool according to what works best for you. If you have been contemplating a switch from carb-loading to fat-fueling, today's repeat of an interview with guest Leanne Vogel is for you! Join Christa and Leanne as they discuss overcoming the fears and getting in touch with your core desired feelings along the way to permanent lifestyle change. Leanne started studying nutrition in 2007 to help her better understand her body and how it worked with the foods she was putting into it. Originally going to school to help herself, she discovered after graduation that she had learned too much not to help other people and that’s when her blog, “Healthful Pursuit” was born. Being a super athlete, Leanne noticed after years of not having her menstrual cycle that she wasn’t performing at her best and was continually struggling to put on muscle. This sparked her interest in regulating her cycle, but after starting hormone replacement therapy she discovered it was stunting her training even more. She went to a naturopath begging for help and that’s where she was introduced to a ketogenic diet. Desperate for a change, Leanne who was a vegan and whole-foods fanatic made it her mission to eat avocados, mayo and bacon for 30 days! She did it and found she could finally get off her ADHD medicine she had been taking since she was 11, her anxiety dropped, her mood improved, she lost 12 pounds, was at 8% body fat and was finally back to training like a beast in the gym. This was a huge transition for Leanne and her body, but also for her business which included many “vegan health-nut” followers who previously looked to her as a mentor, was now eating bacon on daily basis. Now, three years into keto, Leanne says they’ve been the best years of her life. Healthy Keto vs. Unhealthy Keto When Leanne first heard about the ketogenic diet from her naturopath, she found herself scrolling through Instagram that evening and clicking on #Keto. She saw tons of images of processed meats, cheeses, creams and Diet Coke. Many of us dream of a diet like this but Leanne wondered: "How are you supposed to lose weight?" and "How could this be healthy?" Leanne explains that the problem isn't with the ketogenic diet, or really with any dietary style of eating. This issue is that we often have the mindset that if it fits within your macros (meaning it meets your protein, fats and carb ratios), it’s good to go, regardless of the quality of food. In our culture, we connect weight so closely with our health that if we’re losing weight by eating this way, we rarely consider the micronutrients we’re missing out on. It's simply not true that weight loss alone equates to health so the quality of food is important too. Afraid to Eat Fat? Moving from the old paradigms of the low-fat movement can be tough, but we now know that healthy fats have so many important health benefits, including weight loss, balanced hormones, elevated mood, and greater focus. Healthy fat intake also contributes to improved health markers such as resting heart rate, fasting blood sugar and HDL levels through a high-fat, low carb diet. Alcohol and Keto When we eat a standard American diet, we burn sugar for energy. This is extremely inefficient and causes us to feel hungry soon after meals. When we burn fat as our main energy source, we don’t have to eat as much, or as often, which is much more metabolically efficient. Your body will use its own stored fat during fasting periods. But when alcohol is consumed, your body will burn that before anything else, making results harder to see in the beginning. After your first 30 days, Leanne says, “If you must have a drink, stick to dry wines, clear hard alcohols and mix them with low-sugar mixers like tonic or soda water. “ When you are keto-adapted, having a piece of cake at a birthday party or glass of wine won’t make you have to start over again. After burning the carbs and alcohol, your body will jump back into fat burning mode - just don’t let that one celebration turn back into an old habit. Leanne says, “The cyclical practice is really helpful in being able to live your life and not feel deprived.” Core Desired Feelings Leanne shares that her natural desire when told not to do something is to DO it full force. A rebel at heart, she now looks for ways to break rules, but not at her health’s expense. She recently died her hair purple, sold her house and moved into an RV with her partner!
