Mary Zargarian (Mindset Mary) is the empowerment coach that ambitious women need if they're ready to separate from their busy selves so they can live a more vibrant and full version of their lives. Dr Rana el Kaliouby Author of Girl Decoded Interview by Mary Carty Introduction Hello everyone. I'm Mary Carty and I'm here today to interview a pioneer in AI technology with Irish Tech News. I'm so excited and honoured to talk to Dr Rana el Kaliouby. Rana has been working on making computers and our interactions with them more human for 20 years. In other words, Computers have plenty of IQ, what if they had EQ? She holds a BA from the American University in Cairo, A PhD from Cambridge, and worked at MIT Media Lab where she spun out her company Affectiva in 2009, thereby creating a whole new technology category of Artificial Emotional Intelligence. Rana is a Forbes Top 50 Women in Tech and a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum Her fascinating memoir, Girl Decoded, my quest to make technology emotionally intelligent and change the way we interact forever will be published by Penguin Business Books in April. Pre order it now. QUESTIONS The thing that impressed me the most reading your book, is your drive. Against all odds you were going to build this AI, where does this drive come from? What are the advantages of leading with empathy, vulnerability, and kindness? How can we encourage leaders to forge this path, not command and control, win at all costs? I was struck by how much you had to "defeminize" your language around emotions in the early days with investors and funders. How do we find ways not to gender, products, services, and software and help investors and the wider community understand the benefits to society? Finding investment for a startup is hugely challenging, especially for women. Turning down a government contract at a crucial time for the business must have been a difficult decision. Can you tell me a bit about that? What more can we do as consumers to build better, more ethical AI? What's next for you? Two of the most common things women tell me when I tell them about natural family planning / fertility awareness is either “I don’t need that. I’m done having babies” or “I don’t need that. I’m not in a relationship.” The thing is, family planning is only one small part of what fertility awareness can help with. Every menstruating woman can benefit from the knowledge that comes from her own body and her own cycle. Girls should learn this information as soon as they get their first period. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) has called our menstrual cycles the 5th vital sign, they are that important! And they are important throughout our cycles! Whether you just had your first period or you are nearing menopause, fertility awareness can empower you to understand your health. Mary Nordahl, fertility awareness instructor in the FEMM method, and I had an excellent conversation around the topic of using fertility awareness for health.Take-aways:-The FEMM method of fertility awareness uses cervical mucus and LH testing-You can find a medical management provider through the FEMM website-FEMM is a knowledge and education-based program. The goal of FEMM is to understand the information behind your fertility signs-Make an informed choice about how you use your body’s information to achieve your health and/or reproductive goals-Women should know so much more about their cycle than when they last had their period-The birth control pill is just a band-aid!-Cycle-tracking apps can be a useful tool, but are not equivalent to following a specific fertility awareness method and working with an instructor-Knowing your body is incredibly empowering!-You are not making an informed choice to take birth control if you don’t know your body’s natural signs of fertility and what those signs mean for your cycle. If you do know all your options, then you can feel confident when you truly choose the contraceptive method that is best for you-If you are told something is your ONLY option, stop and ask if there are really any other possible alternatives. Do your own research before agreeing to do or take something, especially when it relates to your health-You deserve to speak up for yourself-Myth: using NFP/FA is cumbersome. Is taking a pill every day truly easier than charting your cycle?-Squash comparison by remembering you are enough-When you love yourself, then you can pour out that love to othersRelated Wholly a Woman episodes:Episode 5 - our menstrual cycles are a sign of healthEpisode 13 - facts about hormonal contraceptives (how birth control works)Episode 16 - self-care as a strategy to reduce stress and balance hormones - featuring Dr. Heather RhodesEpisode 22 - thrive with a functional medicine approach to health - featuring Dr. Melody HartzlerEpisode 24 - can natural family planning help me get off birth control?Episode 28 - restoring a culture of women’s health - featuring Anna SaucierTo learn more about Mary or to work with her: https://www.fertilityawarenesspath.com/ Find Mary on Instagram: @mn_fertilityawareness (to be updated to @fertilityawarenesspath)Tag me (@nfppharmacist) and Mary and let us know your take-away from this episode! My next FREE “Know Your Body with Natural Family Planning” workshop is Tues 2/16/21 at 7:30pm central time. We featured Mary Dynes, a licensed healthcare insurance expert, who specializes in healthcare programs for business owners; individual or group. When employers have had to reduce their employees hours, Mary can help with alternatives to group insurance the employees may no longer qualify for. Shopping for healthcare coverage for 2021 is upon us and enrollment periods have started. Mary discusses alternatives employers can use in lieu of group coverage, which creates a win for both the owners and the employees. Coverages you should keep outside of your company plan, and options for elective procedures not covered by insurance, such as Stem Cell treatment or cosmetic surgery, and supplemental insurance for accidents and critical illness. This week I chat with Mary Cook at This Indulgent life. We know that we want to have a great family life while we are still supporting our family. How do we spend intentional time with our family, give them experiences and be respectful parents? Mary and I cover all this in this show. Mary is the mom of one wild little boy and the owner of This Indulgent Life where she coaches fellow moms on how to use gentle parenting and experiences together to find the joy in motherhood and in life. As an expat teacher and mom in Hong Kong she had what many dreamed of, a helper at home to give one-on-one care to her son and do housework, but it wasn’t enough. Something was missing. She was tired every day from long hours away and she would come home not wanting to do anything but watch tv. She felt guilty and felt she was wasting not only her own life but the little time she had with her son. But playing with a toddler didn’t come naturally. She had to find her own way to make life and parenting enjoyable again and discovered that experiences together not only fulfilled her adventurous spirit but also brought back the joy in being a mom. Now she’s on a mission to help other moms rid themselves of the guilt of feeling like they’re not enough and inspiring families to have more adventures together, big and small, to live a more indulgent life. For Episode 16, I'm chatting with Mary Jelkovsksy from @maryscupofteaa about how weight loss doesn't actually results in long term happiness. We also dig into some of the ways weight loss can appear to make people happier. Find Mary on Instagram or YouTube as @maryscupofteaa or on her website maryscupoftea.com. Here's some information about Mary from Mary: Hi, I’m Mary! I’m a former bikini fitness model and competitor turned self-love and confidence coach. I used to spend endless time, energy, and money on diet and exercise programs thinking that I'd like myself more if I was thinner/fitter/slimmer. The more weight I lost, the more my mental health suffered, but I thought it was worth it because I was one of 96% of women in the world who was desperately unhappy with my appearance. I realized that no matter what I looked like, the feeling of “I’m not good enough” would remain so long as I was chasing society’s unrealistic beauty ideals. After overcoming my eating disorder, soul searchin’ and healing, I started my online platform Mary’s Cup of Tea, to inspire you to find unconditional self-love and lead your life with confidence. Now, I travel to beautiful places and eat yummy foods while sharing my heart with you through my writings, videos, and coaching programs.
