No one can know the future... or can you? Josh and James are back to discuss how to set yourself up for success as you head into the final quarter of the year. (For Josh, it's 75 Hard... again!)
Special Guest: Josh Bersin, internationally recognised analyst, educator, and thought leader in the global talent market, Dean of the Josh Bersin Academy Amazon has said it wants to be “Earth's best employer and safest place to work”. This ambition is a long-overdue acknowledgment of the importance of the employee voice. For Josh, the voice of the employee is the most important topic in business. Employees are the most “vested stakeholders” you have; when they have problems or good ideas, you really have to listen. In practice, this means regular structured management-team communications and all-hands meetings, complemented by regular listening, surveys, and feedback. And for firms looking to rebuild as we exit COVID, if you start looking like an unattractive employer, you're going to suffer serious impacts—on not just morale, but business reputation and recruitment. Josh is an internationally recognised analyst, educator, and thought leader in the global talent market and is a frequently quoted commentator on the world of work, HR and leadership practices. He is also dean of the Josh Bersin Academy, the world's first global development academy for HR and talent professionals at all levels and across all industries. Join us as we discuss why employee experience has to be a priority for all organisations right now. Host: Jo Moffatt
When I first met Josh Archuleta I could tell this dude is driven. We've kept in touch over the past few years and finally earlier this year we were able to work together on Haka Shakalaka Session Hazy IPA. The beer itself had a community element to it in that we gave a percentage of the proceeds to Smokin' Hope who is determined to feed as many hungry people as they can. For Josh and his wife Maria to start Mindful Militia to help bring awareness to mental health & mindfulness it's the perfect fit. Enjoy!

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for the June installment of their TV podcast. This time the brothers are talking about the Smallville series finale, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Coincidently, the series premiere will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year. Smallville is a retelling of Superman's origin, focusing on Clark Kent's high school years and early adulthood, largely set in the hero's hometown of Smallville, Kansas. The series premiered October 16, 2001 on The WB. During the show's 217-episode run, The WB merged with UPN to create The CW, where Smallville continued until its tenth season. The two-part series finale aired on May 13, 2011. In the series Clark (Tom Welling, Lucifer) faces many challenges, such as fighting supervillains and balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his desire for a normal life. One of his adversaries is Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum, Justice League Unlimited), with whom he forges a friendship before a falling out. Clark's allies include his adoptive parents, Jonathan (John Schneider, The Dukes of Hazzard) and Martha (Annette O'Toole, Superman III), his high school friend Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack, Wilfred), and Oliver Queen AKA Green Arrow (Justin Hartley, This Is Us). Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) and Lois Lane (Erica Durance, Saving Hope) serve as Clark's love interests, as they do in the comics. Aaron and Josh go into when they first saw Smallville and their feelings on the show as a whole before breaking down each element of the series finale. The brothers also discuss the series' legacy and its crossover with The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths. For Josh and Aaron's opinions on another take on Superman, you can listen to their podcast on Superman II. Smallville is streaming on Hulu. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome to another episode of Action & Ambition with your host, Andrew Medal. Today’s guest is Josh Luber. Josh Luber is the co-founder and CEO of the disruptive stock market-modeled online sneaker marketplace, StockX. Within a short timespan, Josh has transformed sneaker resale and turned StockX into a $1 Billion business. Luber founded many online companies before StockX, including Servinity, that went bankrupt due to the financial crash in 2008. Luber worked a consulting job after that, and in 2012, he used sneaker sales data to launch Campless, the precursor to StockX. He is also the founder and CEO of Stealth Trading Card companies and is moving on to his 5th and 6th startups. You’re going to love this episode. Let’s get to it! What was the process like for Josh while starting his businesses? (3:32) Looking back, Josh says he had some kind of corporate job between each of his startups. His life also changed exponentially between each of his startups as he started a family. Starting a business is always a risk for everyone involved, and anything that happens during a startup can change how it goes drastically. Josh’s last startup had to shut down before exiting because of the crash in 2008-2009. Josh was in Atlanta during that time, and it had a terrible job market; he eventually took a job in IBM, which had him move to New York. As a strategy consultant in NYW, the city was a jumping-off point for capitalists, which ended up becoming StockX. As a startup guy working in IBM, it’s a good company because it’s the definition of big corporations and bureaucracy. If you find yourself in that position, you have to start working and looking for stuff to do on the inside. Josh believes that if he never went to work at IBM, StockX would’ve never happened because it allowed him to accumulate enough taste and skill level with data to ask the right questions. So even though his experience at a Law firm and IBM might look like anomalies on Josh’s resumé, they were both massively helpful in all of his endeavors. What was the data that Josh saw that made him start StockX? (10:12) Josh says that it is extraordinary that what is happening in terms of data in the trading cards right now is almost identical to what was happening in the sneakers in 2012. It’s the big reason Josh has decided to leave StockX to go after trading card companies was because of the similarities for sneakers at that time. In 2012 there was no price guide, there was no Beckett for sneakers, no Kelly Blue Book, and as sneakers became more mainstream, that became more and more of a problem. Sitting in IBM, deep in the data space and having collected sneakers his whole life, and always following the sneaker market, Josh was also just searching for side projects. He thought about trying to get his hands on some sneaker data and seeing what he could do with it, and eventually, he figured out how to collect eBay data. It became clear very quickly that no one was doing real analytics around the resale market at that time. People were still using eBay sold auctions to understand the price of a pair of sneakers, the value of them. It was a very insular, fragmented market at the time. Using the data Josh collected, he looked at what he could build around it, and no one else was doing that. What is the impact that Josh wants to have? (39:47) Josh was happy about this question because most people usually ask him what’s the most expensive shoe he owns, and he’s gotten tired of answering those questions. For Josh, it’s about the process, and all the success he has had with StockX is impressive, and he’s excited that that success allows him to do it again. With the age his kids are now, Josh is excited because growing up, the word entrepreneur did not exist. Going after your dream and making a business, a career from something you love to do was rare. Josh was lucky that what he loved as a kid has grown into the two biggest things in culture and commerce. But it was the actual process of starting up the business and building it that he enjoyed the most. He hopes that his passion for that will reflect in his kids and show them how to create value—hiring people, creating jobs, and helping the world. StockX StockX is a Detroit-based online marketplace and reseller of sneakers, streetwear, handbags, and collectibles. Acting as a live bid/ask marketplace for the most hotly anticipated drops. Meet Josh He’s an ex-PRO baseball player. Now a father of SIX kids, before Josh joined up with Forged FATHER, he found himself in the WORST shape of his life. Josh was around 30 lbs overweight, constantly tired and could barely play with his kids for 5 mins before he’d have to stop and rest, he knew it was time for a change. Like a LOT of dads who used to be a high level athlete, after the days of competing are done, that FIRE and DRIVE to push hard goes away. Add in being a DAD, HUSBAND, and PRODUCER, a guy’s health and fitness gets put on the back burner. This is exactly what happened to Josh, but we FIXED IT. We got him back in a solid routine by re-organizing his day to day schedule. We got him back on a solid training plan that hit HIS busy lifestyle. We fixed up his NUTRITION, not by making his follow a strict diet or meal template, but with a FRAMEWORK that he could easily implement into his lifestyle. The nutrition worked so well for him that his wife started to use it as well which helped her lose all of the baby weight and then some!! Josh is in a completely different place now… In fact, he told me he’s in better shape NOW than he was back when he was playing pro-baseball! It’s all about TAKING ACTION getting back in control of your time. You want to lose the extra weight for good? Make your health and fitness a PRIORITY again. For Josh, it’d helped him become a better dad, husband, and PRODUCER. As the movement against animal cruelty and the suffering caused by the meat and dairy industries continues to gain momentum, there are important and world-shifting developments happening across many different sectors of industry and science. Joining us to talk about his work to reduce animal cruelty in the food sector is Josh Balk, Vice President of Farm Animal Protection at the Humane Society. Having been a part of important and substantive legislative change in the animal rights movement, including the recent Proposition 12, which has banned the sale of caged animals’ eggs, veal, and pork in California, Josh is expertly positioned to offer insight into the current state of the cause. He has witnessed an amazing transformation over the past few years, and it is refreshing to hear someone on the frontlines run through the valuable victories that have been won. Josh shares some thoughts on how change actually occurs in his world, and his thoughts on shifting culture in an inclusive and friendly way make a lot of sense. For Josh, the task of reducing meat and dairy consumption is best approached through innovation and taste, and he believes that once people are exposed to convenient and delicious forms of cruelty-free food products, massive change will be within reach. One way he is pioneering this is by cofounding the already popular alternative-meat brand — JUST.Josh talks about plant-based foodstuffs as well as the looming possibility of commercially available cultivated meat — meaning meat that is created independently from the life of an animal. We hear from him why this idea of lab-grown meat is not actually as shocking or freaky as some of us might feel and his vision for how it can catch on in a major way. Josh comments on the usefulness of an obsessive dedication to a cause, and working with the grain to bring people on board through non-accusatory and non-judgmental means. Sarah Lindblom and Josh Reinitz join Dirt Rich to talk about how they’ve been growing food for their communities with food safety in mind--through the pandemic, and always.Sarah runs Solar Fresh Produce, a three acre 40-member CSA farm outside of Buffalo, Minn. and has a small flock of laying hens. An hour south, Josh has farmed with his family for 12 years on East Henderson Farm. They primarily grow vegetables and also have laying hens. They recently moved from the CSA model to wholesale accounts with restaurants, co-ops, and schools, as well as some agrotourism ventures.Unsurprisingly, food safety is a cornerstone for successful farms. With more of an eye on health this growing season, farmers have been “bringing their food safety A-game” to ensure that they continue to keep their customers safe. For Josh and Sarah, that has meant maintaining safe COVID habits among themselves, staff, and buyers, as well as adding focus to their usual food safety practices during day-to-day tasks. And it’s working! As they see sales pick up, they also see the public perception of the health and safety of locally grown foods continuing to trend towards trust in smaller-scale operations. Providing a high-quality and clean-looking product has been valuable in that it catches customers’ attention and opens the door for conversation. Even noting “triple-washed” on salad greens suggests the amount of work that went in before it reached the hands of the eater. “I can safely say that there’s not a thing I can grow right now that I can’t sell,” says Josh. Sarah sold out of her CSA shares this season sooner than ever before. There’s momentum in buying local, and the two agree that small-scale farmers continuing to prioritize food safety practices will build trust in the broader local foods movement.Listen in for how they weave food safety into their daily tasks, how their practices are part of wholesale account relationships, and some training resources:FSMA Produce Safety Rule - FDADoes the Rule Apply to Me? - U of MN ExtensionFood Safety - U of MN ExtensionProduce Safety Alliance Josh Reinitz, East Henderson FarmSarah Lindblom, Solar Fresh ProduceKatie Feterl, SFA Communications DirectorDirt Rich is produced by the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota

Josh Weichhand is the Marketing Director at Chaco. In this episode, we chat about doing work you believe in and not giving up on the path to doing so. We also talk about Chaco's use of their brand voice during the Bears Ear protection rollbacks and about Josh's own journey of finding his voice and doing work he believes in. For many, the journey to finding a good fit in a career is not without challenges along the way. For Josh, it took 6 unpaid internships, a summer fishing in Alaska, and a 9-month road trip to finally find his place at a company he had been a customer at since summer camp. From the episode: "All of a sudden Chaco found itself on the front lines of this very important conversation in real-time and had some credibility to it because we're an established partner of the National Park Foundation." "There's something about having this one really great pair of sandals that have been with me through it all and then getting to share it with people professionally."
Who doesn’t love money? We’re talking about raising private money with Josh Cantwell, who has raised over $60 million dollars in private money without having someone check his credit in over ten years. In seven steps, Josh lays out how you can raise capital for your real estate investments. Raising private money is not about pitching people. It’s about teaching people about what you do in a cool way. Josh likes to tell people, “I raise private capital for real estate, and I buy distressed properties and pay my investors double digit fixed returns”. For him, this is far more effective than trying to sell potential investors on the idea of real estate investing. The relationship that you build with investors is incredibly important. For Josh, one investor took about 3 years before he finally invested with him. His number one rule for working with investors is: Follow up, follow up, follow up. A “no” today doesn’t necessarily mean a “no” tomorrow. Josh uses the 2R-3M approach. That’s “Regular Recurring Multi-Media Marketing”. For him, all of his marketing starts with a podcast interview, and then he sends it out across various marketing platforms. By putting himself out there and positioning himself as the authority, he doesn’t have to keep answering the same question one hundred times. You don’t need a big audience to raise capital. You need an irresistible offer, and you need to be authentic. Ask your investors, would you rather have 12% interest on the loan or 15% of the profit? Let them choose into your deals. But you are never going to be successful in raising capital from strangers if you can’t convince someone you know to buy from you. Josh shares in his book, Get Flip System, some of the many ways you can have better conversations with potential investors. What’s Inside: —Raising private money means you’re doing deals on your terms, and not the bank’s. —The question you need to ask so that investors will choose themselves to work with you. —All of your marketing doesn’t matter if you don’t have a way to let people opt-in to more information. —Leading with value means you’re giving information out that is worth it to your audience. —Josh’s strategy for winning the supply and demand game.
Coming out after being married to a woman and having kids takes a certain bravery and strength. In this Season Finale we bring you two fascinating and new stories of men who tried to force themselves to live a straight life and eventually came to terms with who they really are. Kade Bartlett comes from a small, extremely religious town in north Oregon, and for years suffered from homophobia, both self-homophobia and from his community. He tried for years to ‘pray the gay away’ for years before finally coming out of the closet. “I had somebody who was very close to me, almost like a mother, she was very religious,” he recalls. “I came to talk to her with things like ‘my marriage is on the rocks’ and she said ‘you gotta lean into God more,’ ‘you gotta pray more’.” FREE DOWNLOAD: Daddy Squared SEASON 3 Cheat Sheet! With all the baggage and the crap and the threats, even the murders that happens, who would choose this? Why would anybody want to choose that?!’” For Josh, who lives in Canada, the religious environment and various conversion therapies he went through (including medication to decrease his libido) caused serious trauma. “I volunteered myself for different therapies that were focused on dealing with what I labeled at the time ‘dealing with unwanted homosexual attraction’,” Josh says. “Conversion Therapy is kind of an umbrella term for a bunch of different therapies that proport to modify your sexuality, and I started in my very early 20s, maybe when I was 20 years old, and that was also a fucked up community because the first therapist I ever saw, he actually came on to me in session, and he was the one saying that these are bad feelings. I had to put a stop to that therapist. “And then I found an online group called Setting Captives Free, and I was engaging with a different online therapists, or so they call themselves, I highly doubt that they’re actually therapists. They would tell me basically, if you ever act on these feelings you’re on the road to becoming a pedophile. And so that’s what I was convinced would happen, I never had any attraction towards that population whatsoever, but I was terrified that that would eventually happen, so further came the need to suppress who I am.” The Wife's Reaction The difference between Kade’s and Josh’s stories is the reaction of their ex-wives. Even though Josh’s wife was extremely supportive and they have became friends, the scars from living life in the closet are not going away easily. “I’m debating going into trauma therapy,” he says, “because I felt immense shame over who I was, that really defined a large part of my relationship with my ex-spouse, because every decision that had major consequence in our lives, from my perspective, I was always going to relent because who I was, was a bad person and who I was, was illegitimate.” Not only are these men’s stories dramatic and inspiring, they each share important lessons as they now reform their lives as gay men raising kids, co-parenting with their ex-wives. “At the beginning I was so upset about the reputation of the man I had heard [my ex-wife] was dating that when I got my kids I would sit there and ask them a ton of questions about what was going on at mom’s house,” Kade says, “— don’t do that! I mean, Unless there’s an absolute threat to their wellbe...

Season one Finale! Jason and Josh sit down to discuss future projects and we creativity is like a drug. Where did our creativity stem? For Josh it was writing a story-line with his action figures, which often involved stealing his sisters Barbies. What makes creative people the way they are? Where does inspiration come from? Josh Zloof, Co-Founder & CEO of Sudden Coffee, is passionate about more than just serving up a great cup of coffee. After launching several businesses that ended in some success and even more failures, Josh knew he needed to find his “why.” This led to him founding Sudden Coffee on the idea of “making one billion people happy.” Today, Sudden has served over 100,000 cups of their single-origin, specialty grade, instant coffee (delivered right to your door). With over $3.3M raised from investors, Josh and Sudden Coffee have been featured in the New York Times, Food & Wine, and GQ. Josh chalks a lot of his success up to manifestation. Simply stating your goals, telling people about them, and envisioning the future you want is enough to make them a reality - Josh calls these “Black Swan Events,” and he’s experienced many of them. At Burning Man, every exchange of goods or services is an opportunity to connect. What if we could break down those same barriers in “real life” with your server, bank teller or barista? For Josh, it's about much more than just hauling junk away. He has a greater mission guiding everything they do. Their B.H.A.G. is to ensure no junk collected by Junkluggers enters a landfill by 2025. Key Takeaways: [0:18] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by IndyFranchiseLaw.com, a leading resource in the franchise space. Head over to IndyFranchiseLaw.com learn more! [0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Josh Cohen, the founder and CEO of Junkluggers. [2:11] Josh welcomes Josh Cohen to Franchise Euphoria. [2:31] Josh Cohen takes a moment to explain the Junkluggers concept which is the leading business in sustainable junk removal. Their goal is to minimize the amount of “junk” ending up in landfills as possible. [5:11] Josh Cohen spent the first nine years of the business expanding throughout the region before they even considered franchising so they could be sure they got the model right. [8:31] Junkluggers currently has 21 franchisees and about 60 markets. Josh Cohen would ideally like to grow the business by 5x over the next three years and longterm get to about five hundred markets. [10:56] One of the biggest differentiators of Junkluggers to their competition is by putting care into repurposing the “junk” they haul and upcycling it for the better. [12:52] Josh Cohen estimates that 90-95% of the items they haul are donated to other charities which is one of the factors helping them to achieve their goal of keeping items out of landfills. [14:41] Some of the characteristics of an ideal Junkluggers franchisee is someone who cares about the mission, wants to be involved in their environment, and has proven results through their career previously. [16:11] Ideally, a new franchisee will spend the first couple of months as an owner operator on the trucks and then beyond that, move into a managerial role that works on the sales, finances, and team management. [19:50] One of the biggest challenges Josh Cohen has faced in franchising a business is managing and supporting franchise partners. Josh Galyean, a manager at Darrell Waltrip Honda, had a tree in his yard growing a little off-center. It wasn’t enough to cause any immediate issues or even be an eyesore, but Josh knew that if it wasn’t addressed immediately with a little guidance and direction then that tree would one day grow crooked and the damage would be irreversible. That experience made for a wonderful analogy for Josh on the importance of serving as a spiritual mentor for the next generation. It was a great example of the same kind of guidance and leadership that Josh’s own father, also in auto sales, showed him growing up. For Josh’s father, you showed your faith through your actions and knew that authenticity trumped charisma any day. Josh’s stories and wisdom shared in this special video are priceless and something every father, mentor, and leader will want to take to heart. It’s easy to think a crooked tree isn’t a problem to be solved today, but the investment today will pay off for a lifetime.

You may have recently read somewhere, “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” This question is obviously meant to inspire you to do the things you have put off by putting your tepidness, laziness, or fears behind you. If you knew you wouldn’t fail, you might attempt much more than you currently do. What is it about the thought of failure that stops us? There’s a different way to think about failure and what we decide to do with our time in the face of it. Consider the following question: What would you do anyway, if you knew you would fail most of the time? Would you change what you are doing day-to-day? Would you stop thinking about your big dreams? For professional baseball players, “failure” is a regular part of the process. The average Major League player only hits the ball and gets on base two or three times out of ten. Even the best of the best never average more than four out of ten. This means that the likelihood of not hitting the ball and getting on base is way more than 50 percent. In other words, they fail most of the time. In fact, all of us fail regularly. The process of obtaining any goal is paved with failures whether we choose to recognize them or not. When we embrace the hard times, those that we can label as failures, our road to success is streamlined. Josh Lifrak is the Director of the Mental Skills Program for the Chicago Cubs. His job is to help over 300 players that are in some way associated with the Chicago Cubs organization to reach their potential through mental health training and mind exercises. He works with a staff of six individuals that lead meditation, and other mental practices to help professional athletes gain control over their minds. Deciding what to do with your thoughts and finding ways to create positive thinking is Josh’s specialty. As we sat down to interview Josh today, we learned new tips on setting goals, dealing with nerves, and embracing the hard days. Josh also happens to be a runner, so of course we asked him how his training for baseball players is pertinent for runners. Read along or put in your headphones to learn more! You Control Your Thoughts Every training period leading up to an event has several “suck” days. You know, the days when for whatever reason you feel sloshy, your legs are heavy, your mind is tired, your breath is shallow. Josh relishes days like these. This is when you get to practice “hitting the wall.” When you embrace these hard moments, you grow in ways that others won’t. Instead of looking at this challenging day as a failure, look at it as an opportunity. It’s not every day that you get to train your mind in a race-day-like scenario. This applies for any number of negative feelings and thoughts you have. While we can’t always control what comes into our mind, we have the power to choose what to do with those thoughts. Before you let your next negative thought control your day, take a mental step back, realize what is happening, and then decide what to do with it. Pressure, Nerves and Butterflies Along the lines of controlling our thoughts, race day mental antics are just that, jokes. You have put in the hours and miles; the time is now yours to celebrate the training you have put in by competing. For Josh and the Chicago Cubs, they have a saying that goes, “Turn your have tos, into get tos.” In other words, realize that this is an opportunity. It’s not something you have to do, it’s something you get to do. Feeling nervous means you are ready. It means your body is warming up and ready to go. Let those nerves give you energy because that is what they are meant to do. Josh says, “How often do we get to feel that alive?” So whatever it is that you are feeling, you have the power to turn it into a positive. If you are having a dumpy training day, use it as mental practice for race day. If you are feeling anxious and nervous on the start line, harness that energy and use it to propel you. Embrace each thought and moment to use it to your advantage, and don’t forget to feel alive. On the debut episode of the Talking Music! Podcast, nostalgia is in full bloom. For Josh, The National's 'High Violet' is a dark magnum opus rich with angst - a Godsend during his moody teenage years. And for Connor, Smashing Pumpkin's double album 'Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' is a cathartic experience in both beauty and anger. Until now, they had only listened to their respective albums. But Josh making Connor listen to 'High Violet', and Connor is making Josh listen to 'Melon Collie'. An indie rock gloom-fest versus a two-hour grunge epic... Will the guys RATE their albums or will they HATE them?

For Josh's money, "Peter Pan" is one of the best classic Disney animated films and so he couldn't be more excited today as on the podcast he talks to Kathryn Beaumont, the voice of Wendy Darling. She is joined by Mindy Johnson, an author and historian who literally wrote the book on Tinker Bell. What was filming like? How do these two women see the legacy of the movie? We delve into those questions and more.
Touch Podcast is hosted by Ryan Clark and Nathan Novero. Episode 14 continues the conversation with best-selling author Josh Harris and documentary film-maker Jessica Van Der Wyngaard. Ultimately, Josh wanted to understand how the ideas of his book had affected people and this starts with Josh listening and the leadership of strong single women Jessica. In this show, we’ll hear about how Josh dropped out of the project and what brought him back. We’ll hear about how a 19/20-year-old gets a book published and a bit of the evangelical machine that swarmed to his message and the role the homeschool movement in launching book and career. The best story includes jeopardy and Aussie filmmaker Jessica Van Der Wyngaard finds that working with Josh Harris, author of a number of books including “I Kissed Dating Goodbye.” For Josh, this film isn’t theoretical or academic. In this episode, Josh speaks to the painful and difficult task of coming to terms with the fact that what he started teaching 20 years ago and has built a career on, is regrettably flawed. Special contributors to this podcast include Ellen Goebel of Worldwide Groove Corporation and their very sexy song, "Kiss Me Slow" that features Kareem Bennett
The Working Interferences are back this week and start off discussing a big speaking gig Josh has coming up. Lance gives Josh some advice before the advice this week, which consists of three Reddit Questions! They start off with a simple question….How do you know if a dentist is good? After a nice discussion of dental skills competition, the Interferences answer a question about instrument transportation cases. Is leather autoclavable? To wrap the show, Lance and Josh talk about how much of their brain they use. For Lance its little. For Josh, its more of the little brain than the big brain, if you know what I mean!
Happy New Year, Fitlandians! We are so happy to have you here as we start off this new year by harnessing the power of intention. When we can let go of the restrictions that come with those New Year’s resolutions, we can instead look forward to creating a revolution! So, if you’re ready to get back on track and reclaim your health and vitality but need a little extra support, today is the last day to sign up for Christa’s 30 Days of Thriving which begins tomorrow on January 2nd. And today, for a little New Year’s inspiration, we are extremely excited to welcome Fitlandia’s “super fan,” Josh Cyphers to the show. Josh is going to speak with us about letting go of shame and getting your fit self back – for good! Josh stumbled upon Fitlandia as he was exploring different approaches to fitness and health using a variety of diet and exercise methods. He says he was drawn to Fitlandia obviously because of the rad name, but also because he saw it as a “trifecta of wellness”; focused on nutrition, fitness and mindfulness. He realized that previously, one of those pieces was always missing from his routine and that’s why he never had any lasting success. Background Growing up playing sports, Josh explains feeling as if he’d been on a diet practically his whole life. It wasn’t until he slowed down playing sports that he noticed how sedentary he had become and how his nutrition was lacking. He said that it began not only to affect him emotionally, but also physically in the form of weight gain, which he had never dealt with before. Josh dabbled with different diets and exercise programs, but became increasingly discouraged and trapped in the yo-yo dieting trap. Recovering from an cycle injury, he says it resulted in indulging in sugary treats and beer, firing up the reward center in his brain. Josh explains that he reached a point when he was so frustrated from going from cycle to cycle and how it became extremely difficult for him to want to nourish his body and be good to it. For Josh, he ended up in a place of emotional and physical pain, making it hard for him to even get up in the morning to face the world. With the love and support of his wife, he made it a goal to start moving each day. With a list of 20 basic exercises he says he simply began to move, reminding himself to just take that one step. Josh says, “The first step is always the smallest but the most important!” Tips to Bounce Back Think back to a time you felt really alive and happy and ask yourself how can you get there again. For Josh, this was playing football and even if he didn’t get back to playing the sport right away, he knew he had to start with basic daily movement. To help with this, Christa says “visualize and connect the emotion to that goal which will wake up your brain to that very thing and actions will start.” Give yourself a realistic and strategic way of getting to your goal like Josh’s 20, one-minute exercises to just begin moving again. These small wins are how we create new thought patterns resulting in new lifestyles! Find what sets you back and what pushes you forward. Grow your community or “tribe” that allows you depend on them in times of need or of celebration; where you can all operate together. Mind Zoning®! Focus on how to reprogram and change your thought patterns so when times get tough you don’t have thoughts of unworthiness or shame. Josh explains how he was able to let go of his self-worth being tied to playing football and eventually, he experienced more positive thoughts and was able to move forward in his life. When you’re ready, be open and vulnerable to accepting help from others and let yourself lift others up as well. Josh has come quite far as he describes waking up the day of the podcast with a “heart bursting of gratitude.” Since beginning his journey back to health, Josh says he now craves more movement and is always discovering ways to make himself eat and feel better. We all have the power within and whether it’s joining our 30 Days of Thriving program or connecting with Josh and Christa in the Facebook group, we can’t wait to encourage each other this new year as we harness the power of intention. Just in time for Valentine's Day, we're introducing each other to two of the, er, most? romantic high concept martial arts action comedies. That's right, we're doing Edgar Wright's SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD and Berry Gordy's THE LAST DRAGON. For Josh, Scott Pilgrim is an Edgar-Wright-sized hole in his movie history. For Rob, he's been wary of The Last Dragon ever since he first heard of it. For Jordan, it's a refresher for both. Tune in two weeks to find out what happens next! The Forgotten Film Pod can also be heard on iTunes, Stitcher, and a podcast app near you.
