A man of many talents, Rob Gardner's most impactful relationships are now long term, positive friendships. His boss early in his career became his life long friend and they founded two companies together. Other significant relationships vital to his career development included Redington's first client and Rob's wife who he met professionally at work. For Rob it was bosses who can impact a career and involve help and support, rather than clients. But, there are also lessons to be learned from bad bosses; as he put it, the good, the bad and the ugly! If a professional relationship is breaking down it is easy to jump to conclusions. A better way is make the effort to understand, maintain or repair. Rob shared his favourite resources.
Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. My guest for this episode of Type 2 is Rob Hopkins, a ridiculously prolific UK-based activist, author, podcaster, lecturer and environmentalist who describes himself as a ‘champion of the collective imagination'. There are many lessons and insights in this chat, but two themes predominate - the power of local movements to lead to wider, societal change; and the importance of imagination and creativity in this wider process. For Rob, the act of imagining different outcomes and realities is integral if we are to get through the perilous climate situation we find ourselves in. If you think about it, this is a profound insight. After all, one thing that keeps the status quo in place is a kind of imaginative helplessness, this idea that our own actions are destined not to have any impact, so there's no point in bothering. Rob sees this condition of inertia and confusion as ‘a state of promise,' and his work is primarily concerned with arming people with the tools to break out of this imaginative malaise, and to reimagine our individual and collective realities so we can create a better future. That's the basis of Rob's pioneering work with the Transition Movement, for example, and the work he's currently leading in his home town of Totnes in the UK. Rob is a truly original thinker with an ethos that is a beguiling blend of pragmatism and untrammelled creativity. I found this to be a hugely inspiring, thought-provoking and insightful conversation. I hope you do too. New episodes of Type 2 are released every four weeks through my Looking Sideways channel. Hear it by subscribing to Looking Sideways via ApplePodcasts, Spotify or any of the usual other podcast providers. Thanks to Ewan Wallace for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.
These boots - if a success - will go on to sit on shop shelves across the world and grace the feet of the biggest footballing stars. In this episode of In the Studio, football journalist Raphael Honigstein guides us through this creative duo's process, as they balance new, exciting ideas with tried and tested formulas that have brought the company success before. We'll join Dave as he sketches out the new design, discussing the delicate balance between emerging technologies and the dream boots he has in his mind. He's also keen to reflect the history of the sport too, taking us inside the Archive Room to search for design inspiration from the past. For Rob, his domain lies in what's worked before. Armed with the stats about which designs sell well and why, he guides Dave and his team towards a boot that not only looks good, but performs well on the pitch and the shop floor too. But what is success for them both? A slick design? An impressed athlete? Or a sales boom? And which one of these takes precedence when designing a new football boot? We follow the next steps in the process - from the rigorous testing to the storytelling around the launch - and hear the final moment when Dave and Rob get to unbox their creation for the very first time.

Lu Xun again? Really? Yes, really. But we still disagree. For Rob, the 1920's were Lu Xun's definitive decade. For Lee, it was the era of Ding Ling, who fired the opening salvo in what would become a century of powerful, innovative female writers.
Dr. Robert Kelly serves as Vice President and Special Assistant to the President at Loyola University Maryland. As we catch up with Rob, he’s doing the deep work of reintroducing students to campus. He does so under the shadow of a pandemic, only just now meeting the tease of a vaccine and a general misimpression that all colleges and universities are potential super-spreading elements of national concern. The field of higher education is already carrying unchecked baggage. Higher education is expensive. The burden of those costs on families is extraordinary for many, and questions about the use of funds dampens the delivery of services. The digital divide is not closing as quickly as it must, particularly if institutions are genuinely looking to face diversity and inclusion challenges — black and brown students and families are increasingly falling behind. And did we mention the “enrollment cliff” that was already on the horizon? All this was facing our higher ed institutions before the COVID contraction and is still there, brewing, growing. That’s what makes higher education such an exceptional example of institutions pressing forward. “Students have a hunger that we need to meet,” says Rob. “We have to hold on to that.” We open our conversation with Rob with a question that comes to us courtesy of the Masai people who open conversations by asking, “how are the children?” They measure the health of their culture by the health of their children. For Rob, they’re not doing great right now. As you’ll hear from our conversation, this drives the charge for him, the faculty at the University, parents, and other engaged adults to create a culture celebrating reconciliation, curiosity, joy, and hope. This is a conversation about responsibility; taking responsibility for crafting the future for those in our care. Rob shares how he is helping Loyola to build according to their mission: pressing forward on issues of culture, climate, race, and inclusion in the face of obstacles of our own creation. Robert Barnes is the co-founder and CEO of TradeIX and the co-founder of the Marco Polo network. TradeIX is the network operator that runs the Marco Polo network a consortium of banks and corporates that transact both domestically and globally. In this podcast Rob, takes us through how Marco Polo is able to drive trade and working capital innovation with blockchain technology. What is blockchain? Rob, looks at blockchain from a distributed ledger technology (DLT) standpoint because their interest is in peer to peer permissioned transactions. Rob, explains how there are different types of blockchain from the broadcast model, also known as public blockchain, such as Bitcoin, to the peer to peer model like Corda. A blockchain that has financial transactions, needs a peer to peer network that is highly permissione where only the participants to the transaction have visibility over it. For Rob, blockchain is a platform that facilitates the sharing of data between different legal entities that are permissioned to have visibility over a transaction. TradeIX / Marco Polo also use the same technology to run stateless calls. A stateless call is where you’re using the communication protocols of blockchain to call something or to request something that doesn’t need to be written onto the blockchain. By doing this you avoid the use of APIs between the various legal entities, companies and customers. APIs are used to connect into large corporates’ back end systems, ERP systems or underwriting ones to name a few. DLT breaking down silos in trade finance When you look at the financing part of trade it is about interactions between corporate entities and their bank. This could be as simple as a payment. Whatever the interaction it happens via silos that need to talk to each other. Most of the time this communication happens via emails with PDFs, via API calls or sometimes it requires the entity to join a particular business network to get access to the data within a silo. If they do join a business network the power is usually centralised, owned by a third party and more importantly you get into issues of data residency. Blockchain / DLT provides the opportunity for everybody to control and manage their own data within their desired jurisdiction and shared with the counterparties that they are doing business with globally. This enables the breaking down of silos as parties start to communicate and transact between each other across the DLT, whilst providing all the permissioned ones with access to this single version of the truth in an immutable manner. Having access to this single version of the truth enables all parties to avoid the unnecessary cost of data reconciliation and verification. For Rob, blockchain / DLT at its core affords the ability to take risk and cost out of everyday processes that are done today. TradeIX TradeIX started out its journey by being super focused on the actual financial transaction within trade. As they started working with banks, insurers and corporates their journey evolved into solving problems of communication between businesses, financial institutions, and the various ecosystem participants. For example, it enables corporates to exchange purchase orders and invoices between themselves without having to go through a centralised business network, use paper, or email. Marco Polo Rob had been involved in trade and trade finance technology for a number of years. He had been looking at a few technologies that were starting to converge which could make a huge difference in the way in which businesses transact and do business globally. Those three technologies were blockchain, cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML). Rob felt that if you could bring these three technologies together in a way that created and broke down the silos and created efficiencies in communicating information and documents in a digital way across the globe you coul...
On last week’s episode, we talked to Australian Jesuit Fr. Michael Hansen about the First Spiritual Exercises – otherwise known as the 18th Annotation Retreat – and dug into how this seemingly forgotten form of the Exercises can transform our thinking and approach to Ignatian Spirituality. Think of this week as “part 2”. Fr. Rob McChesney discovered the 18th Annotation Retreat only recently. He’s just back from three years working with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Amman, Jordan, and he’s reflecting on how the Jesuits might better minister to victims of trauma: refugees, war veterans, survivors of sexual abuse, and others. For Rob, the light bulb went off when he came upon Fr. Hansen’s work on the first spiritual exercises. Today's conversation is about applying Ignatian spirituality in general and the 18th annotation in particular to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our human family. Hopefully it gives you something to chew on, especially as you consider ways to put your own Ignatian contemplation into action. You can find more great spirituality resources at Jesuits.org/spirituality. And if you're interested in getting in touch with Fr. Rob to learn more and help him with his work, contact him at rmcchesney@jesuits.net.
Hailing from the small country town of Orbost, Robert Trewin has built a renowned and trusted reputation across Victoria's East Gippsland as a mortgage broker of choice, and of latter years, the mortgage broking business of choice. With a background in lending, Rob made the leap at a time when only 20% of home loans originated from the broker channel. Armed with a fervent commitment to delivering service, solutions and value to the community, Rob hasn't looked back. These days, Rob's brokerage has won a host of awards for service, diversified income (insurance) and business operations, including the prestigious nMB Business of the Year. This is a reflection of the continued value that he and his team provide to clients. For Rob, staff selection is based on an alignment of values, meaning he can trust them quicker and be confident each member of the team can uphold the reputation and service standards the business has become known for. As Rob also mentions, one contributing factor for his ongoing success has been surrounding himself with good quality people. If you would like to continue the conversation, you can reach him via his email. The topic today: how each collector arrived at their collecting focus, and how they've developed their taste over time. Each of the collectors Associate Editor Zach Kazan spoke with has their distinct taste reflected in the watches they choose to collect. For Erik Strickland, it's a focus on watchmaking history seen mostly through the lens of a particular brand. For Rob, it's a pursuit of a classic aesthetic. For James and Christoph, it's all about discovering hidden horological gems through the ownership of interesting vintage watches, particularly divers. What ties these collectors together is a laser-like focus on the watches that interest them, and a dismissal of the herd mentality. In this episode, Coach D and Elisa Maruzzo speak with Rob Knesaurek, Group VP of Youth Hockey and Industry Growth at the National Hockey League about Why the NHL is invested in quality grassroots experiences.Rob grew up with Daryl in Toronto where they bonded together as children of immigrant parents and with their love of sports. Rob credits hockey for providing him the skills both on and off the ice that led him to working in healthcare for over 18 years in Australia, Hong Kong, and the U.S. When he eventually came back to Canada, he felt lost and found himself being drawn back to the game as a guiding point for the next phase of his life. Rob started training kids for free grounded in making them have fun and learn good working habits. What started out as 3 kids soon turned into over 3,000 kids and an opportunity to work with the NHL to grow the fan base. Rob's role focuses on: Acquiring or retaining people to play and watch the game (including esports)Support the experience. The game is made of of 90% volunteers that are often forgotten. He does this through helping clubs make intentional investments in their market to connect with youth and the next generation. His mandate: make the game more inclusive, supportive, and diverse.Rob works with advisors, leaders, and role models or all backgrounds to understand how they can remove barriers and allow youth of all backgrounds to see themselves and have access to the game. The reality for all sports organizations is participation is everyone's problem to solve and we need to ensure that the purpose of playing is for enjoyment of the game. This includes the organization, coaches, volunteers, athletes, and parents. For Rob, hockey is the greatest game in the world. It teaches life skills such as discipline, resilience, respect, and how to work as a team that can be applied every day. Hear the discussion on areas that still need to be looked at including: How parents can impact their child's experience - both from a positive and negative experience potentially letting them drop out of the game. How volunteer coaches need support and recognition How the organization is making conceited efforts around diversity and inclusion in all levels of playingFor Rob, winning at the end of the year is more kids playing, staying, and having fun in hockey so that they participate for life. Hear the discussion on how the NHL and Rob are working to build quality sport experiences to keep kids participating in hockey for life.Rob is an award-winning hockey coach and highly skilled business leader with over 20 years of experience creating dynamic teams and programs designed to help a variety of individuals exceed personal potential and organizational goals. It's been a while since we did a B-sides show - those intermittent collections of new cinema releases that we didn't cover at the time of release. And that's largely because, er, there aren't any cinemas open - but that doesn't stop Sarah, Rob and Graham from having some films from January, February and March to consider. For Rob, there's two of the biggest films of the year - Sam Mendes's World War One-Take epic 1917 and Leigh Whannel's revisionist take on The Invisible Man. Sarah has Michael Winterbottom's Greed, starring Steve Coogan as Not Philip Green, and true-life sexual harassment drama Bombshell. She and Graham also cover Misbehaviour, in which a frankly huge ensemble tell the story of the protests at the 1970 Miss World pageant. Give us a twirl. Instead of our usual exploration of visual storytelling and thinking about creative process, this week we have a brief yet important message to share. Our message is that we’re here to love, care, and support our black community and do our best as non-BIPOC do to be better at helping more by listening, being affected, and committing to an ongoing active awareness and ongoing supportive action to get rid of systemic racism. Black Lives Matter. The ongoing system of repression and discrimination must end. So much murder and death of black skinned people is such an obvious symptom of the discrimination. Murders by the police of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, and so many others. We are in the midst of an uprising of super brave action from the black community. This is a place and time to dig in for systemic change. Let’s make it all our job to end systemic racism. I’m looking at us white folks as I say this. People who are BIPOC have no choice but face that job. Our work is to help one another become as strong as possible. So then what are we/us two doing to help more and in better ways? For Jerzy, that is: Following and supporting black artists, finding and supporting more businesses owned by people of color. Casting a wider net for guests and creative works to highlight. Donating more often, for this week that was donating to the Community Split Bail Fund. I will use my agency as a co-organizer for comics festivals to bring attention to diverse voices. For Rob that is: Awareness and listening deeper: For years awareness and immediate attention on justice for the black community is an event. Occasional and inconsistent. Now I’m working make it an every day practice. Making it a real project to be continually informed black voices. With that, I follow more, listen more, read more, share more black voices in my feeds and media. Donating more often, for this week that was donating the Campaign Zero Project. Scheduled a recurring task for this evolving project in omnifocus app, that works for me as a habit to keep a project going. Supporting, raising, celebrating voices that need to be heard like that of the black community must be an ongoing way of life. Where you can, when you can, support black creators and causes. The black community has been forced to bear this systemic racism load every day for over 400 years. We are privileged because it’s a choice for us to face it. Let’s not forget that. Let’s explore ways to bring in more diverse voices more often on the show. We want potential guests to reach out. Leanintoart.com/contact We’re here to learn with all of you. What are you doing for your awareness, commitment, and ongoing action? Tell us your stories, comments, questions, thoughts (through our email, social feeds, contact form). I know we’re in good company to make things better because Leaners aren’t weiners. Brave protesters thank you, our society owes you. Thank you all for listening and learning with us. Love to you all. OK Bye.

Rob Cesternino and Akiva Wienerkur need a podcast and every week, Rob and Akiva spin a wheel of listener-submitted podcast ideas and whatever the wheel lands on, is what they podcast about next. This week, the wheel landed on "The Pod-Off" which resulted in Rob and Akiva going their separate ways this week and doing their own podcasts on season 3, episode 7 of The Flintstones in RAANAP episode 81. For Rob's podcast, he was joined by David Wright from Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X and Survivor: Edge of Extinction. On Akiva's show, he was joined by his wife Mera Wienerkur and his 11-year old daughter Adira Wienerkur. After Rob and Akiva compete in the "Pod-Off," they go through the mailbag to hear what new ideas should be added to the wheel and then spin the wheel to see what will be coming next week. If you’re interested in skipping ahead to the mailbag at any point, skip to 47:36 . Though the situation asks us to self-quarantine and stay put in our own homes, now is NOT the time to rest. For Rob, it's still hustle and grind. Plainly his choice. But if you can do it too, he thinks you'll make a big change in your business and career once we get out of this crisis. What Rob sees as problematic: people see this as a chance to slack off—by allotting much more time than usual to resting. Not all people will agree, but try to hear him out. Tune into the latest episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast to know more about what you can do during this time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rob sees an opportunity to all of this. We can do our part as citizens—stay informed, follow the protocols, and help other people—whilst also bettering ourselves. There is definitely no pause in personal improvement. Entrepreneurs, you can have your time to reflect too—even if you grind & hustle during your isolation. This global health crisis brings anxiety and fears to most, so peace of mind will be needed. Maintain your momentum. You can find alternatives, even you're at home. You can even consider this time to start your long overdue projects. Now's the time. The world needs people right now, those who think and move with a cause. It's the best time to put your skills and knowledge to good use. There are problems to be solved. You can help other people through your services. BEST MOMENTS “I'm not all about hustle and grind.” “When you've got a day of just nothing, a blackhole, with no structure or routine, it's quite easy to just bounce around like an atom in an open space.” “Being busy is a really good distraction from going to a depressive state.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property Podcast (https://www.progressiveproperty.co.uk/podcast/) Rob Moore's Start Now Get Perfect Later (Book) (https://www.amazon.com/Start-Now-Get-Perfect-Later/dp/1473685435) ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is a 5x best-selling author, a public speaker, an entrepreneur, property investor and a Guinness World record holder among others. Between the ages of 8 - 11, Rob found himself bullied due to being overweight. These were formative years, in which many would have found themselves subdued by such treatment. Rob chose to react by losing the weight in order to regain self-confidence, displaying the kind of resilient attitude early-on, that has taken him to success in the business world. Many of our values are driven by our voids and our pain, as well as our desire to do better. An often heard phrase among the wealthy is that it’s “not about the money”. But it was at one point in their past. Success is all contextual. Compared to when he began, Rob is incredibly successful, but there is always work to do. The more you learn about yourself, the more you will understand the journey ahead of you. Engaging with criticism can sometimes be useful. Take a step back and see if the comment has any value. Do you respect their voice? Are they trying to add value? You have to balance experience with an open-minded view of life. Life is full of surprises, and expectations can be overturned at any point. Don’t ever judge the present based on the past, as each moment is unique. Rob’s thought process is built around "Think. Decide. Act. Review”. Thoughts begin as a primal feeling, and must go through several filters that come with experience, development and understanding. Rob's rebellious nature has led to some remarkable experimentation in his business life, and has led to his “Disruptive Entrepeneur” philosophy. Many choose to emulate the successful, but for Rob, this has never been enough. The concepts of value and fair exchange are the biggest areas in which Rob has achieved success. Value is understanding what people want and giving it to them. Fair exchange is the relationship between value and price. You can love what you do, but there will always be parts of that thing that you don’t enjoy as much. For Rob, the realisation of this was important. Sometimes success and discipline are about doing the things you don’t enjoy doing, when they need to be done. The next level of mastery for Rob, is to see if he can deliver an entire speech unprepared; to truly live in the moment, and to see what comes through him. If you don’t risk everything, you risk nothing. How do you grow if you don’t try things? The greatest gift Rob has given to himself is the realisation that he can be what he wants to be. It is the ability to tell himself that he can grow if he wants to. Why build your personal brand? Your personal brand is a separate asset to the business or investing assets that you may have. So, having a vast personal brand can give you additional income streams. But it's not just increasing our wealth, more importantly, you reach more people. Rob has 16K+ subscribed to his premium content on Facebook alone. Imagine how many had he influenced already. Well, you can also do the same thing and have as great or even greater benefits. All you got to do is to build it. In this episode of The Money Podcast, Rob teaches you how you can brand and market yourself. Among different topics, he shares strategies on how we can make use of the social media platforms, which are mostly free. We've all got personal brand. you just have to find and believe in it, so you can monetise it. KEY TAKEAWAYS What's unique about you? Your uniqueness might manifest from your skills, accreditation, style, manner, interests, or experience. For Rob, he enjoys mixing his artsy side with his business prowess. He's into heavy metal so the guitar riffs in the podcast intro is noticeable. What words and values could you own? What do you stand for and what do you stand against? They don't have to be political; it could be professional and business-related. What is marketable about you? For Rob, he's here to disrupt, not to impress anyone. If it will challenge your mind, principles, and goals for the better, then it's a great content. How do you solve people's problems? Your brand can be built around the specifics of the service you are offering. This might be the most obvious and easiest approach. Be true to yourself. Don't oversell and exaggerate things. You can only manifest what you can only provide to a group of people. And, if some are not satisfied with what they see, move along. Focus on giving value to people who need and appreciate it. Know how to handle criticisms—Approach them professionally, not emotionally. It's a consequence that comes with being a recognised brand, especially in social media. Personal Brand vs Business Brand. Distinguish beforehand what you'll be posting on your personal and business social media account. This ensures not just your security and privacy, but also your loved ones. Tip: You can select who only sees a certain content when you post it. Apply the 70-20-10 rule when managing your social media accounts. The 70% of your content should be posted on your main account, 20% on the next one, and 10% on the rest. You can also put a link of your primary account on the secondary accounts. In the United States, football season is about to get underway. But for rare disease researchers, there is no off season. That’s why for Uplifting Athletes, raising awareness and funds in the fight against rare diseases is a year-round endeavor. Since the nonprofit organization consists of a national network of chapters run by current football student-athletes, the football season does have some special significance, however. That why on a new episode of the “World of Promise” podcast, host Anthony Farina was excited to sit down with Rob Long, Executive Director of Uplifting Athletes. “There are roughly 30 million college football fans in the United States and there are roughly 30 rare disease patients in the United States,” says Rob. “Our job is to make those two overlap and to raise that awareness,” he says. For Rob, the connection to rare disease is personal. An all-American punter at Syracuse University, Rob’s football career was cut short after he was diagnosed with anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer. He had to put aside his desire to play in the NFL but instead answered another calling as a leader in the rare disease community. Listen to Rob share his story on this episode.
Sometimes, it’s just time to move on. And yet, after struggles, trials and tribulations and painful endings, sometimes that’s not the easiest thing to do. How do you find the right path? How do you redefine your life once an important chapter has closed? This is a situation we all face in one way or another. For Rob, the 2000 album Daisies of the Galaxy by EELS was the soundtrack to a tumultuous chapter in his life. Luckily in that very record, he found some perspective on the subjects of pain and struggle, loneliness, and how to look on the bright side even though the skies were still pretty cloudy. In this episode, the Deeper Cuts trio give their impressions of the record, and the group discuss the business of moving on, and what music has to say about dealing with loss, and finding ourselves again after it’s all over. Put out that smoke and breathe some air, friends! Give us a listen. Learn Hustle Grow How Two Forty-Something Empty-Nesters Achieved Debt Freedom and Built a Thriving Real Estate Business Rob and Reshawn are the power couple behind the blog, Learn Hustle Grow. This power couple are the parents of two kids, and they are so inspiring because they are in their 40s and are officially debt and mortgage free. One a saver and one a spender, these two faced the challenge of melding their money together, setting them on a path to financial success. Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey is the cornerstone of the debt payoff movement. He personally helped both Wendy and I, and he also helped both Reshawn and Rob as they paid off their debt. If you visit Dave’s website there is a wealth of information about the debt snowball process, and he also has a podcast that is easy to listen to. Here is a link to Dave Ramsay's total money makeover site. Rob Rob, one of three, grew up in Portsmouth Virginia to a poor but loving family. After high school he decided to commit his time and focus to joining the Marine Corp. During that time he had his own money, clothes and cars, but he learned little about money. After the Marine Corp he was able to go to college and get married. There were two big mistakes that Rob made during that time - mistakes that would take a few years to clean up. One is that he over spent, there by using all of his extra GI Bill money on expenses outside of college. Next he went through a separation in which he was left with all of the credit cards - which contained shared expenses, but which were in his name solely. He was a newly minted single dad, in debt. It would be some time before he would meet Reshawn, and clean up his finances alongside her. Reshawn Reshawn was raised in a single parent home that never really discussed money growing up - but she never felt like they were poor or broke as a family. It became clear there was no money for her and her sister for college, though, so she joined the Army Reserves. She finished college with the help of the GI bill, but ended college with thousands of dollars of student loans and credit card debt. She was also a new single mom, in debt. Reshawn realized that daycare expenses and baby clothes were her new normal, and she began to call the credit card companies to negotiate her debt. It took her 10 years to pay off her student loans - and all of her debt was taken care of before meeting her “Mr. Wonderful”. Two Lives Combined Reshawn hesitated when she realized that she was a saver while Rob was a spender, especially with the fact that they were not only combining their lives, but the lives of their 10 and 8 year old. Here is the advice they gave during our episode that outlines how they went through the process of combining their lives : Go through credit reports, earnings and premarital financial counseling Be open to adjusting the plan as you become aware of new ideas and realize that something works better than the current plan The relationship you have with money at the start of a marriage can, will and even should evolve - be thoughtful in your approach Find a combined plan that works for the entire family - For Rob and Reshawn this was Real Estate! Making Money Moves as a Unit Rob and Reshawn took multiple steps to overcome the hurdles that were in their way at the beginning of their marriage. Here is a blueprint that all couples should consider in order to follow the path that Rob and Reshawn: Pay off your debt together or side by side Save a 6 month emergency fund Make a decision on whether or not you will use credit to your advantage- together Agree on the rules and restrictions of credit card use as a family Find your key to financial independence. For Rob and Reshawn this is Real Estate. Real Estate Moguls Rob had the goal of becoming a real estate mogul, and eventually Reshawn joined in. We had the opportunity to learn about how they went from one property to owning multiple properties, including a small apartment complex! Now that they have multiple properties and have reached financial independence, what do they plan to do with their newfound freedom? Read the answers to their final questions to find out and listen to our episode to find out more about this! Rob and Reshawn on the final questions: Don’t Be Broke! Communication about money is KEY to success You should have your own “blow Money” or allowance money so you won’t feel guilty about spending it. The importance of being open to learning new things. Look beyond the day to day to grow your own life, your own interests and own business. Do not give up - keep reaching for your goals. Set it and work hard to get to the end. You shout at the waiter when you're served with warm beer, you whine about your collection of Rolex watches because it isn't that big yet, or you throw a fit because the queue is too long. Well, next time you complain about your 'first-world problems', think again! In this episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast, Rob opens up your eyes to the things you should be looking at and be grateful of instead of letting the frustrations and complaints get ahead of your day. After watching The Staircase, a Netflix Original Documentary Series, Rob reflects on how he lived his life very differently from others. Learn from Rob how to have the mindset, grab every opportunity that comes and look at everything with an optimistic perspective. KEY TAKEAWAYS Put into context what is going on in your life. Maybe, it's just a small problem that you're making a big big fuss about whenever you get frustrated. Think about how other people handled it. how could you not? You have so much stuff to be grateful for. Take this in mind. People are different in many ways. Look at how lucky you are when presented with opportunities, big or small. Focus on things that will make you feel alive. Your family and friends around you that you cling to are the greatest inspiration. Spend a lot of time with them. Who are your mentors? For Rob, it's anyone who had a bad day yesterday but it still gets up to courageously face today. Treat your difficulties as a motivation. BEST MOMENTS "We mustn't let small problems become big problems. We mustn't let the first-world problems overwhelm us and make us believe that life is hard, things are hard." "Be grateful with what you've got. There are millions and millions of people in the world who got it much harder than you." "If you're going through difficulties, know that people are going through more." DESCRIPTION You only live once! But that doesn't mean that you will mindlessly and irresponsibly spend your money all your life. The smartest way to live is to budget, preserve capital, invest, and to save for future needs, emergencies, and escapades. On this episode of The Money Podcast, Rob shares how to avoid spending beyond your means, how to deviate from bad spending habits, and how to spend but at the same time, invest and save money. With his tips, your habits, addiction, needs, are taken into full consideration, so you don't have to worry. You got to be smart to live your (only) life to the fullest! KEY TAKEAWAYS You're not tracking how much you spend. If you track your money and you budget, it's difficult to spend more than you earn. With any kind of planning – money budgeting or doing your to-do list, the best thing to do is plan before. Better plan what you're going to do on Thursday on a Wednesday night. In this way, you can happily end your Wednesday. And, if you plan on Thursday itself, there's a probability that you might get suck by the emergencies. Understand emotionally why you're spending more than you're earning. Am I spending on emotional purchases? Am I spending in order to look good for someone else? Have a level of self-awareness. The cure is to fill your voids another way. For Rob, writing books and making podcasts then sharing it to the world is filling the void. What could you replace these buying things you don't need with to meet the same need? Sometimes, we want to show off. That's fine. We just don't need to survive. We want to feel important, worthy, praised, etc. We can get those needs met without spending money. It's better to spend money as a reward to yourself, not because of addiction. Set a specific goal. You can buy some opulent things but they are always targeted on dividends and drawings of company. There are expensive stuffs (e.g. watch) that you buy and at the same time meet your need that go up in value. You got your needs, the praises, and the addiction met yet it doesn't erode the capital. Preserving capital, falling yourself into thinking you're spending but you're actually investing and saving. Commit to learning how to buy a £40000 car that doesn't go down. It's a fun game to play and learn about managing money, preserving capital, buying appreciating assets rather than depreciating liabilities. BEST MOMENTS “The only way you'd be spending more than you own is being emotional rather not knowing.” “Our brain is chemically wired to shorten the time it makes decisions by making things habitual. We're wired to be addicted to dopamine, etc. Find a new way for your addiction.” “We all need to feel important. Otherwise, what's the point of living?” “The sweetest prize is the one we worked the hardest for.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Low-Cost High Life: Live an Affordable Life of Luxury by Mark Homer Uncommon Sense: The Popular Misconceptions Of Business, Investing And Finance And How To Profit By Going Against The Tide by Mark Homer Money: Know More, Make More, Give More: Learn How To Make More Money And Transform Your Life by Rob Moore ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor and property educator. On this episode, Rob shares his experience as an interviewer and podcaster. He shares with us some strategies on how he chooses his guests, how he prepares his questions, what he thinks is important for interviewees and listeners and other behind the scenes things you need to know about the Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast! KEY TAKEAWAYS Find a credible and interesting guest. Rob makes sure that the guest could be a big name, an unknown, a person that the community wouldn't think of, or a person you could take a chance on to contribute on the message. Hire a good researcher to get you the possible best guests out there. You could find them through your network of colleagues, from the documentaries you're watching, or from your favorite podcasts. Be insistent if you really want them. Rejection is better than nothing. Reach out by calling, emailing, or even sliding them a message on their social media. Have a framework for the interview. Prepare 5-7 main questions. Research on the quest beforehand. For Rob, sometimes, he intentionally does not research the guest to make it more interesting. There are times also that he lets the energy of conversation guide them. Just remember to make sure of your key questions. Personalize the questions for each guest. Try not to use rehash questions anymore. For The Disruptive Entrepreneur, what's a sort of common question is about the commercial and the non-commercial experience in their career. The interview is not about the interviewer; it's about the interviewee. It doesn't matter how great the guest you've invited if you won't be able to get the best out of him in the interview. Remember to let him finish his answers first before proceeding. Be professional during the interview. Always try to have a good rapport and engage him to talk. Ask good interesting questions. While interviewing, you might tend to look every time at your prepared written questions, it might be quite off-putting for the guest. A podcast is convenient, easy to access, and a personal media. It's the closest thing that audience could listen to the author or the expert without even meeting him. The podcasting industry has been constantly growing for the last 15 years. But still hasn't reached its peak of exponential growth. BEST MOMENTS “The bigger you make a big decision, the often it's the worst decision you make.” “It's good to be nervous because it makes you prepare well.” “Interview is not about the interviewer. It's about the interviewee.” “Guest is the most important person. You've got to try to draw out stories on experiences, the golden nuggets, etc.” “You're an artist. There are so many things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula, with kids or without. Beautiful beaches, exotic Yucatan cenotes, jungles, wildlife like the turtles in Akumal, and ancient jungle pyramids like the Coba Ruins. It's all here in the Yucatan Peninsula, and that's the focus of today's episode: one of the best road trips in Mexico. On the show this week is returning guest Rob Taylor of 2TravelDads. Rob has found plenty of fun things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula — both solo and with his family. This is constructed road-trip style, since driving in the Yucatan is safe and easy. Even so, this same trip could happen via buses, taxis, or personal drivers. We visit the Coba Ruins. We explore Yucatan cenotes, and we swim with turtles in Akumal. And of course, we do what everyone should do on a Yucatan vacation: swim, eat well and relax. What else would you expect from one of the best road trips in Mexico? Why Yucatan Vacation? Why is it the Best Road Trip in Mexico? Rob and I both think that a Yucatan Vacation is home to some of the best road trips in Mexico. Why? For one, the Yucatan's roads are flat with good signage and infrastructure. Secondly, it's easy to pick up a car rental at Cancun's International airport. In addition, Rob explains the benefits of traveling in the Yucatan with kids. He describes it as an ideal marriage between history, culture, and nature. The Yucatan Peninsula is part of Mexico, but it has its own unique culture, that is infused with its Mayan past. Sure, there are great restaurants, beautiful beaches, and abundant wildlife. But you also have the Mayan culture, seen both in the dozens of archaeological sites but also living within the locals. The Yucatan also has unique flora and fauna. Especially fauna. There are dolphins off the coast and flamingos in Rio Logartos and Celestun. There are the turtles in Akumal, as well as tropical fish when snorkeling. Then there are monkeys, crocodiles, deer and more. And did we mention the turtles in Akumal? Yucatan Road Trip: Start in Cancun For our Yucatan road trip itinerary, we start in Cancun. This is a major tourist hub, with massive hotels and entertainment complexes. Cancun is also where the Peninsula's largest international airport is. For most people, this is the best place to fly into. For Rob and his family, the Yucatan vacation starts soon after landing. They leave the airport and, after picking up a rental car, go straight to the beach. Before they leave Cancun, they visit a few of the Mayan ruins in or near the city. That's right: there are Mayan ruins in Cancun! Visiting Mayan ruins are certainly one of the best things to do in the Yucatan peninsula, and even Cancun has them. The most famous Mayan ruins in Cancun are places like San Miguel and El Rey. They are probably not far from your Cancun hotel. Things to Do in Akumal - Turtles in Akumal After some beach time and the Mayan ruins in Cancun, Rob suggests heading south. One of his favorite destinations is Akumal. One of the most famous things to do here is swim with the turtle in Akumal, and that's what Rob recommends here. He has been several times and has always seen turtles in Akumal. In fact, he talked about the last time he was there he "only" saw eight turtles in Akumal. At other times, he saw nearly twice that many. Akumal is his favorite place for snorkeling in Mexico. Swimming with turtles in Akumal is awesome, but another of the best things to do in Akumal is to visit Cenote Yal Ku. Only a short drive from Akumal, Cenote Yal Ku is both freshwater and saltwater, as the cenote opens up into a lagoon. That means you get sea life like parrot fish and angelfish in what is usually a freshwater swimming spot. Yucatan Cenotes Rob said that Cenote Yal Ku was one of his favorite cenotes in the Yucatan, but what are Yucatan cenotes? I certainly didn't know about Yucatan cenotes before we visited Mexico. A cenote is a freshwater sinkhole, part of a vast underground water system that is unique to the Yucatan Peninsula. The water is fresh, clean and mostly underground. Some Yucatan cenotes are open to the sun, while others are in caves with little light from above. Rob talks about some of his favorite Yucatan cenotes — a crucial part of our road trip in Mexico That said, keep in mind that these Yucatan cenotes aren't free. Some of the most famous large Yucatan cenotes on the east coast of the peninsula cost USD $10 or more, per person. On the other hand, many Yucatan cenotes in the interior or west coast cost as little as a dollar. It's also worth remembering that no sunscreen or mosquito repellant is allowed in Yucatan cenotes. The chemicals can damage the fragile ecosystems there, so if you're prone to burns or bites, cover up. Mayan Ruins in Mexico If you want to see Mayan Ruins in Mexico, then you're headed to the Yucatan. It's a huge part of what makes the peninsula one of the best road trips in Mexico. In fact, one of the best things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula — with or without kids — is visiting the Mayan ruins. Rob started with the Mayan ruins in Cancun, surrounded by hotels and high-rises. But he didn't stop there. We talked about many others, including the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum. Rob's favorite, however, is the Coba Ruins, which are inland. Deep in the Yucatan jungle, the Coba Ruins in Mexico are massive and largely intact. And as Rob explains, travelers can still climb the pyramids here. Places like Chichen Itza no longer allow climbers, but places like Uxmal and the Coba Ruins in Mexico still allow you to reach the top. Rob talks about his experience in the podcast. In this podcast episode, podcast host, Heather R. Younger, speaks with Rob Pepper, Marketing and Business Strategy Leader at iStratus, LLC. Rob shares his fundamental leadership style. For Rob, his success strategy is surrounding himself with talented individuals and then letting them do what he hired them to do. His favorite saying, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” is how he pushed his team to see more in themselves and to challenge themselves to expand their potential. Rob prides himself, too, in getting in the trenches with this team and rolling up his sleeves. He also shares some challenges too.
We all want to be fit. But who wants to go to a gym ever day? And what if lifting weights actually bulks you up rather than slim you down? With all the conflicting information out there, you can’t get your head around the right foods to eat before and after a workout. It’s exhausting trying to figure out the best fitness strategies to lose weight and feel great. That’s where today’s guests can offer you some invaluable advice: what they don’t know about fitness is not worth knowing. Devon’s dive into wellness dates back to her late 20’s. Despite being a dancer and appearing slim and healthy, she had a disordered relationship with food, and was pre-diabetic and peri-menopausal, which means her blood sugar and hormones were completely out of balance. Through a combination of Gyrotonic training, holistic anti-aging strategies and nutrition, Devon completely healed her Lyme disease, balanced her hormones and now feels healthier than ever. For Rob, health was just about aesthetics. It was about looking good. Flash-forward 10 years, and an unfortunate honeymoon photo made Rob realize that his “just work out and don’t worry about the food” theory had resulted in a big gut – he looked the worse he’d ever looked. Now, he’s shed 30 pounds and looks 10 years younger! Together, Rob and Devon are the dynamic duo behind Open Sky Fitness. Their podcast combines expert interviews with in depth looks at the latest in wellness and workouts. They also offer one on-one coaching and group challenges for people who are really serious about getting fit. Just in time for Valentine's Day, we're introducing each other to two of the, er, most? romantic high concept martial arts action comedies. That's right, we're doing Edgar Wright's SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD and Berry Gordy's THE LAST DRAGON. For Josh, Scott Pilgrim is an Edgar-Wright-sized hole in his movie history. For Rob, he's been wary of The Last Dragon ever since he first heard of it. For Jordan, it's a refresher for both. Tune in two weeks to find out what happens next! The Forgotten Film Pod can also be heard on iTunes, Stitcher, and a podcast app near you. Rooster Radio - Stories & Insights from Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Business, Health, Tech & More
It was 3am when Rob Chapman received a phone call that no leader could prepare for. Phil Walsh, the coach of the Adelaide Football Club, had been murdered. As chairman of the club, one of the most high profile sporting teams in Australia, Rob had to lead players, staff, fans and a wider community through an unprecedented time of trauma and emotion. Rob shares the key moments, including that phone call and through the steps of the leadership and communication response that impacted so many. While Rob could never be ready to handle such a crisis, his years in business leadership, including roles as CEO of St George Bank and managing director of Bank SA, had taught him a lot about people, both on a personal and public level. For Rob, it is a case of nice guys finish first - being likeable, a "good bloke", has been a big part in his success. He says he learned many of these traits as the son of a farmer, and in the school boarding house. Rob's rise to the top in business hasn't been without challenges. Early in his career he pushed himself to the limit, and took risks, while still juggling his role as a husband and father to young children. Having achieved almost all there is, Rob remains motivated and passionate to see South Australia progress, both in its economy and mindset. Send any questions to him and he will answer them on the show. Last week Rob asked you to send in some questions that he could answer on the show. Here are two of his Question/Answers. Q: Can I gain weight and still run 3-4 times a week? (From Jessie A) A: Depending on your body type, running might be hindering your muscle building. Here is what I suggest. Steps to gaining muscle mass Eliminate the running completely from your program. It doesn’t mean you have to get rid of it forever, but it will hold you back if you have a hard time gaining muscle mass. Keep 3-4 days a week of weight training. Split it up by concentrating on upper body one day and lower body the next. Stress your muscles so your body must adapt. Make sure during your weight training that you are lifting heavy enough weights that it is putting stress on your muscles. Keep the reps between 8-12. Keep adding weight until your 8 reps is difficult. Eat more food. Depending on your body type you might have to eat way more than you think. If you are an ectomorph, you might have to eat between 3000-5000 calories per day. Q: How many days a week do I have workout to lose weight? (from Lauren) A: If you are working out 5 days a week and you aren’t losing weight, there is a problem. There could be a few suggestions Lift heavier. You won’t necessarily get bigger, it will lean out the internal fat of your muscles. Think of a fatty steak, lifting weights will lean out the meat. If your cardio is not strenuous, you won’t have the best results. Just jogging for 45 minutes won’t change your body. Try HIIT Training. High Intensity Interval Training. Take a look at your diet. Keep a food journal…are you eating too much, not enough? If you have an endomorph body, you could try a lower carbohydrate diet. Josh Trent, The Interview Josh was raised in Section 8 housing and fed by the Welfare Program a well balanced diet of cheese and Wheaties cereal. His mom suffered from Bi-Polar disease. Through this difficult upbringing, Josh created some negative belief systems that he took with him for the next twenty years of his life. Josh’s Negative Beliefs People can’t be trusted. His mother suffering from Bi-Polar disease was not to be trusted. Money is bad and evil. His dad wasn’t around much and when he was around, he was consumed with work and making money. Bad things will always happen. Because Josh didn’t know how to stop negative thoughts, he used food to numb himself. By the time he was 21 years old, he was 280 pounds. Trying to make a life change, he decided to move to Hawaii where he fell into personal training. For the next 9 years he engulfed himself in this world of health to help himself and his clients. While he tried to work on how to stop negative thoughts, his mind and emotions were with him wherever he went until one day he had to ponder the question, “Am I worth it?”. He realized was using other people to focus his attention away from the dark parts of himself. In 2012, after a falling out with a mentor, Josh quit the fitness industry and began working in a cubicle in Corporate America. All his emotional pain came to forefront and in a panic, he sought personal development by attending a workshop called, Mastery in Transformational Training. Here he learned how to stop negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. The Stories We Create We all create stories around what we learn as children. These stories can help you or hinder you in a happy life. Once you are aware and know what those stories are that are holding you back, you can then create a new story in replacement. While the 10 day course helped Josh to find these stories, it was awareness that they existed that cultivated real change. These negative stories are what stops us everywhere in life, including our health and fitness. For Rob, he spent 7 years, from the ages of 5-12, traveling an hour back and forth to New York City to audition for acting jobs. In seven years, he only booked one job which ended up being a humiliating experience. He then created a story that he was destined to fail and to this day, this story still weighs over him. How to Stop Negative Thoughts and Change them to Positive Thoughts. Charles Duhigg talks about the Habit Loop You have an Impulse, the Cue, that a negative thought exists. You can take this information and funnel it in two ways. 1. Action mechanism or habit. You can either eat a doughnut or do something self deprecating, or you could create... 2. Reward, feeling of release, self confidence How do you funnel the Impulse into the Positive Reward and stop the negative thoughts? -You take out the power by talking about it. You must realize it is just fear. -You must replace the habit with the reward. You can only do this through having a conversation. Create an Environment for Success. -You have to feel your feelings in order to deal with them. -You want to find friends that are also moving towards growth. How do you recognize when you have the block? -If you are blocked, you will notice it by feeling down, angry, sad, etc. Like, “I hate my job.” -If you change your language from, “I have to” to “I get to”. It is a much more empowering. Conversation is the key! Even if it uncomfortable, you must talk through that uncomfortable place in order to find the new place of understanding and connection. How can Technology Help your Health? Accountability Community As a kid Josh loved playing video games. After seeing film where Olympic athletes used technology to help these athletes win the silver medal, it inspired Josh to find technology devices to help regular people empower their wellness. Any device must have a human connection or the device won’t last. Rock Health did a study that most devices only are used for an average of 3-6 months before they go into the kitchen drawer. However, Josh suggests if you are working with a coach or within a group, these technological devices can be very helpful. These devices can help to create better behaviors and habits Josh Trent Created for Open Sky Listeners a Free Guide to Fitness Apps. Download the FREE Guide Here. Josh’s final piece of advice. -When you are looking at your goals, you must manage the process and the road to get there. You must measure your process. You can do this through a coach or an app. LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Email Josh at josh@WellnessForce.com If you would like to learn more about Josh Trent Check out: Website: WellnessForce.com Josh's Twitter Josh's Instagram Josh's Facebook Want to Ask Rob a Question or tell him what is working for you: Email Rob@OpenSkyFitness.com To leave a review for Rob and the Open Sky Fitness Podcast CLICK NOW! Robert Gregory Browne is a novelist who heads his own publishing firm, Braun Haus Media. Rob has been writing fiction for 30 years and has 19 novels under his belt, many of which were published by some of the biggest names in the business: St. Martin’s Press, Penguin/Dutton, and Harlequin. Before he started writing novels, Rob worked in the movie industry as a screenwriter. His thriller, Kiss Her Goodbye was produced for television by Sony/CBS. Several years ago he won the Nicholl Fellowship for screenwriting from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. The Nicholl Fellowship is a prestigious international screenwriting competition to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters. In our conversation, Rob explains why he decided to make the leap from traditional publishing to indie publishing several years ago, and the blow-out success he had with his first indie title, Trial Junkies. We then dive deep into one of the chapters in his new book, his first nonfiction title: Casting the Bones: An Indie Author’s Guide to the Craft of Fiction. The chapter we pick apart: Creating Characters that Jump Off the Page. For Rob, creating great characters is of paramount importance to the success of any novel, and in our conversation he shares the techniques he uses to write characters that feel real and keep the story moving quickly. He also discusses how he balances showing with telling, his sparse use of dialogue tags, his general aversion to creating detailed outlines, and other approaches he has developed over the course of his career. Stevil and Rob Lobster welcome you to another episode of Booked! We start off in the realm of TV, where we give some love to our co-host Katie Findlay on the massively successful debut of her new show How To Get Away With Murder. Then we move into some of the comic related debuts of the week. Is Gotham a little too heavy handed on the references? Do we wish it was just a straight forward Gotham Central adaptation? Our hosts also ask listeners to give it a little faith past the pilot, because when has a show ever been decided by it's pilot? Also on the TNT network, a Teen Titans series has gotten the green light with Nightwing being the rumored leader. What can we expect from this? Stevil is really hoping for Cassie Sandmark. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also started their sophomore season, starting with a quick peek at Agent Carter. What can we expect from this prequel series? We will watch it all day if it has Dum Dum Duggan! And at the same time, can Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continue the momentum it gained in the last part of it's first season? Bring on Mockingbird! With so much to talk about in the TV world, Stevil and Rob get into the hype on the Tick revival at Amazon, the new Supergirl series, and whether or not Ollie Queen is a smart enough adversary for Ra's Al Ghul. We also talk the sad news of the Y the Last Man movie being dead in the water. Will we ever see Yorrick's story on the big screen? Is it better suited as a TV series? Delving into some really comic talk, our hosts talk DC's big event Future's End. What were the high points? What are the lasting ramifications of this? Addressing the rumors that all the worlds will collide, Rob has worries that the proper respect may or may not be given to fan revered timelines. Words of wisdom are also given to the Batgirl creative team: Let's move on with less James Gordon Jr. for a bit. Finally, a loving review of a book Stevil brought to the last cast as his recommendation. Rob has finally picked up his copy of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Seconds and blew through it in four hours. This means the guys can discuss it at length, as it definitely hits home for both of them. For Rob, it bring the looming reality of his thirtieth birthday that much closer and Stevil, well, dealing with exes usually sucks, we can all relate to that, right? So join us for some deeply nerdy comic talk and let us know what you think in the comics below. Did you pick up Seconds? Or hate Gotham? What should be done with Y the Last Man? Think about it and keep reading those panels people!
Everybody has elements of GI Joe they dislike. Everybody. For Rob, it’s the Dreadnoks. For Paul, Battleforce: 2000 gets his ire; for Steve, mention of the D.E.F makes him vomit in his mouth a little. The challenge for episode 37? Try and say something nice about these personal peeves. Try. Try real hard. Also, Paul gets acquainted with his 50th anniversary Night Viper and airs his nitpicks. And remember: real heroes don’t do drugs.
